      Series Preview

San Diego Padres (5-13, 5th in NL West, 8 GB) @ Colorado Rockies (7-10, 3rd in NL West, 5.5 GB)

      Pirates Top Hitters
      1. Ian Stewart (.254, 6 HR, 15 RBI)
      2. Chris Iannetta (.377, 4 HR, 14 RBI)
      3. Dexter Fowler (.371, 3 HR, 10 RBI)

      Probable Pitchers (Subject to Change)
Shawn Hill (0-1, 2.74 ERA) vs. Ubaldo Jimenez (0-3, 11.81 ERA)
Jeff Niemann (1-2, 4.91 ERA) vs. Aaron Cook (1-2, 6.14 ERA)
Jake Peavy (1-3, 8.64 ERA) vs. Jason Marquis (0-1, 7.11 ERA)

      Ron Burgundy's Thoughts
We are coming off our first successful series of the year, we took two of three from the Pittsburgh Pirates. Now we are heading into the mountain air of Denver, and we come in with some steam. We are looking to play a little leapfrog and jump the Giants and pull even with the Rockies in this series. After our atrocious start we've looked decent in the last few games and that gives us hope that we will at least be respectable this season. We've also got Jake Peavy pitching in this series, and he had his first real lights out Jake Peavy start last time out, here's to hoping he has another one. Nick Hundley has also been tearing the cover off the ball, if he keeps this up he will prove to be an upper level catcher for us. Now it's time to sit back and enjoy some baseball, and as always, you stay classy San Diego.

        Ron Burgundy's Game Notes
This was a tale of two games, we started off great, then gave up a five run lead.
I have to question our manager in leaving Cla Meredith out there for the 10th after giving up the lead in the 9th.
Another great start from Shawn Hill, every time he comes on the mound we can count on him going deep.
Kevin Kouzmanoff is starting to heat up, we definitely could use some production from other people.
In Edgar V. Gonzalez's first game in the lineup he makes us look good with a 2 RBI performance.

        ------------------------------------------------------------

        INJURY

Injury news came in early this morning. It appears Luke Gregerson was flipping through channels last night at the hotel room and somehow ended up with a fractured finger. I don't even want to know what was going on there. We placed him on the 15-day DL, he should be good to come back right after those 15 games. So far this season Gregerson has a 1-0 record with a 3.00 ERA and 5 strikeouts in 6 appearances.

To make up for the loss of Gregerson righty Edwin Moreno was called up from AAA. In 11 appearances in AAA Moreno is 0-0 with 1 save, a 2.51 ERA and 18 strikeouts. This strikeout artist is looking to carry over his impressive season to the majors and give the Padres a solid arm to carry them to victories while Gregerson is out hurt.

          Ron Burgundy's Game Notes
Another solid game for our team, we have been looking very respectable in the past week.
Jeff Niemann makes his second good start in a row, he's looking like a solid pickup.
Adrian Gonzalez is on the board! Took him almost a month for his first homer, but now hopefully he'll start racking them up.
Nick Hundley hit the ball hard again tonight, he may see a bump up in the lineup to get our offense rolling even more.
We look for another series win tomorrow as we have Jake Peavy on the mound, look for him to have another good start.

            Ron Burgundy's Game Notes
Jake Peavy looked very good for six and a third inning, then the wheels fell off.
It was very disappointing that he had such a solid start going on and then he got rocked and couldn't get out of his jam.
If a positive is able to come out of this game it's that Adrian Gonzalez continues to play well, hopefully he'll become the superstar we know he can.
This was a disappointing series as a whole, we thought we could come in and win at least two of three, but we only got one.
Through three starts Edgar V. Gonzalez is looking good at second base, that doesn't bode well for David Eckstein as a Padre.

              Ron Burgundy's Thoughts
Last time we played the Dodgers they really took it to us. This time we head into Chavez Ravine to take on the division leaders at their home park. That means Ron Burgundy is going Hollywood. I'm going to have a good time tonight, hopefully our team plays some decent baseball so I'm not distracted by anything. Adrian Gonzalez is finally starting to hit for us so that could mean trouble for the rest of the National League. If he gets hitting like he's capable of he can win us some games we otherwise would have lost. We've also got the back end of our rotation going in this series, which is actually a plus because they have been outperforming our marquee starters to date. I have to say, there's no place like sunny San Diego, but if I had to stay any other place on Earth, it might be Los Angeles. So this week we are coming in and taking over this town.

                Ron Burgundy's Game Notes
We were worried about playing the first place team, but we took it to them early and were able to hold on.
Chris Young is really getting on a roll. He's starting to pitch like the top of rotation pitcher that he really is.
Kevin Kouzmanoff is hitting really well this month, he and Nick Hundley are carrying our offense.
Cla Meredith bounced back from his loss nicely by converting the save easily in this game.
This wraps up an up and down month for the Padres, I'm proud of how we are doing right now though.

                  Ron Burgundy's Thoughts
Well my first month as the general manager of the San Diego Padres is in the book. We got off to a nightmare start, but things are really starting to turn around for us now. Our offense has been sputtering all month, but all signs point to the situation being straightened out. Adrian Gonzalez is supposed to be our superstar but he didn't perform like it most of the month. A positive is that he is still getting on base via the walk and leads our team in on base percentage. Our superstar has been Nick Hundley, somebody who plays catcher, a position we thought would be the first to need to be upgraded to succeed. The biggest downside to the month has been Jake Peavy. We thought he would be our All-Star of old, but instead he's only won one game and given up a huge chunk of runs. If he doesn't improve in the future I really don't know where that will leave him as a Padre. We are paying him a ton of money to not produce right now, but I know he'll be able to turn it around.

Well I'm ready for May, how about all of you? It's time to jump some spots in the standings and make a little noise. Things aren't going to get easy though, the NL West is a proverbial bear pit. But gentlemen, the Padres will be going into the bear pit full steam, and we are going to come out winners! I hope....Anyways, as always, it's been a pleasure to run your hometown team up to this point, and you stay classy San Diego.

                    Ron Burgundy's Game Notes
Talk about sending a message to the NL West, we aren't just going to accept last place.
So far we are 2 for 2 in this series against the best team in our division, that bodes very well for us.
Kevin Correia has been so strong this year, and he dominated today only giving up 3 hits in 8 innings.
Our offense was simply amazing today, homers from Gonzalez, Giles and Hundley. Those three are all on fire right now.
Adrian Gonzalez has been raking over the past week, it's no coincidence that we have a winning record over our last 10.
This win is bunching the NL West together, we are creeping up on the other teams during this stretch.

Just read through the first 4 pages and I really enjoyed it! Looks like as Adrian Gonzalez goes, so does your team. Hoping to see Peavy and company turn it around soon. What made you decide to go with Cla over Heath as the closer for the 'Friars this year?

Yeah, I'm really excited that he's starting to heat up. He's been getting on, his OBP is around .400. He was just getting singles and walking though. He's started pounding it this past week, and my team has been doing good. If Peavy can turn it up I'm really excited about this season.

The closer situation was kind of a toss up going into the season. The roster was made before Bell broke out last season, but he's still really good. He and Meredith are about even. I went with Cla first and if Bell showed signs of dominance I would plug him in, but he didn't. He started off really badly but has turned it around recently. Cla is doing just fine in the closer spot now, but if he starts to struggle I won't hesitate to try Bell out in some closing situations.

                          Ron Burgundy's Game Notes
That's three in a row from the division leaders, we are really picking up ground in this long series.
This win locks up a series win against the Dodgers, that's something to really be proud of right now.
Scott Hairston has been solid in the leadoff spot, his average has spiked to well above .300 since he was given the role.
Adrian Gonzalez is still swinging the stick, add another RBI to his total in this little streak.
Heath Bell was able to get a save in this game because Cla Meredith was unavailable since he's pitched three straight days.
Shawn Hill has been a huge asset for us, he lowered his ERA to under three in getting his first win of the season.

                            SHaynes23,

Shawn Hill has been great for you! I remember the beginning of the year you had a platoon with Gerut and Hairston. Are you still using that platoon or have you gone solely to Hairston because of his recent production? Also, what are you getting from your current LF spot? Gerut looked to be swinging a solid stick early, as I was reading I was going to recommend him as your leadoff hitter but before I go to your last post you had put Hairston there HAHA.

Last question. What version of OOTP are you using?

I've still got a platoon of Gerut/Hairston in the leadoff spot for center field. I'm working Hairston into the lineup against righties by playing him every 3rd game in left field. Chase Headley gets the other two starts. I'm planning on starting to post my stats for all my players weekly again instead of the team leader table. That'll keep everybody updated on my daily rosters better than the team leaderboard. And I'm using OOTP10. Thanks for reading so far.

                                Ron Burgundy's Game Notes
Even though we dropped this game, we still end this four game stand with three wins against the division leader.
Jeff Niemann was not sharp at all out there today, he continues to be a roller coaster, high highs and low lows.
Heath Bell came in and pitched 3.2 innings of perfect baseball, he continues to impress after a slow start.
Everth Cabrera was all over the field today, he hasn't been getting on base much, but when he does the other team pays.
Manny Ramirez got on a roll today, when he's locked in there isn't much you can do with him.
Tonight we head back to San Diego for a much needed stop at Casa de Burgundy and I get to see my furry friend Baxter.
