Ketel Marte then flew out to short left, but Goldschmist beat the throw home to tie the game at 3-3.

In the 11th, Jake Lamb drew a walk to open the inning. Socrates Brito lined a double into the left field corner with Lamb moving up to third. Nick Ahmed picnh hit for Daniel Hudson and singled back up the middle scoring both Lamb and Brito to make it 5-3.

Tyler Clippard came on in relief in the bottom of the 11th and sent the Cubs down 1-2-3 on three strikeouts to even the series at 1-1.

Welington Castillo was the offensive hero in this one, going 2 for 5 with a double, home run and and RBI. Socrates Brito went 3 for 5 and Paul Goldschmidt went 2 for 6 with a double and run scored.

      NLDS: Game #3

      CHICAGO 9, ARIZONA 1
      (Chicago leads series 2-1)

Jorge Solar broke the game open with this third inning Grand Slam off of Patrick Corbin.

      10/10/16
Phoenix, AZ (AP) – The Chicago Cubs dominated Game #3 of the National League Division Series as they defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 9-1 at Chase Field on Monday afternoon. The loss pushed the DBacks to the brink of elimination in this best-of-five series.

Kyle Hendricks "junk" kept the DBacks off balance all night long.
Patrick Corbin struggled from the start on the mound in this one. It finally caught up to him in the third. Three singles loaded the bases with one out. Corbin then fell behind Jorge Solar 2-0, and hung a slider that Solar hammered deep into the left field seats. The grand slam put the Cubbies ahead to stay, 4-0.

In the sixth the Cubs would add an insurance run on a crazy play. Ben Zobrist lined a two-out base hit to right. Pitcher Kyle Hendricks then lined a ball off of the first base bag. It flew up in the air and all the way to the wall in right. David Peralta misplayed it and Hendricks ended up on third with an RBI triple.

The Cubs would add some additional runs late off of reliever Rubby De La Rosa, scoring three in the eighth and one in the ninth, leaving the bases loaded.

Arizona would get one back in the bottom of the ninth after back-to-back one out doubles from Socrates Brito and Welington Castillo.

The Cubs pounded out 14 hits against Corbin and De La Rosa in the game. Jorge Solar had the big night, going 2 for 4 with a double and the grand slam. Kris Bryant went 4 for 5 and Anthony Rizzo went 2 for 5 with a double and run scored.

Kyle Hendricks went the distance to pick up the win. He allowed one run on just five hits. He struck out three and did not issue a walk.

Patrick Corbin took the loss, lasting six innings, and allowing five runs on nine hits.

The Cubs will send Jason Hammel to the bump to try and wrap up the series tomorrow night at Chase Field. Arizona has not announced a starter. Nate Karns was originally scheduled to start, but Chip Hale said that Robbie Ray may get the start instead in this elimination game.

            NLDS: Game #4

            ARIZONA 2, CHICAGO 1
            (Series tied 2-2)

The DBacks walked it off and will now head to CHicago for Game #5.

            10/11/16
Phoenix, AZ (AP) – The Arizona Diamondbacks extended their season on Tuesday evening as they won with a walk off wild pitch and they defeated the Chicago Cubs 2-1 in Game #4 of the National League Championship Series at Chase Field. David Peralta scored the winning run on a wild pitch from Justin Grimm with the bases loaded in the top of the ninth to send the Chase Field crowd into a frenzy, and extend the series.

Welington Castillo homered again, his second of the series.
Arizona grabbed the lead in the bottom of the third as Welington Castillo lead the inning off with a solo home run to left. It was his second of the series, and it was Arizona's first hit of the ball game.

Robbie Ray could not make that lead hold up though as the Cubs got one back in the top of the fourth. Kris Bryant tripled to dead center to open the inning. Jorge Solar grounded out to Jean Segura, allowing Bryant to score to tie the game.

Robbie Ray, who got the start over Nate Karns, pitched six innings, allowing the one earned run and scattering six hits. He struck out five and did not issue a walk. Nate Karns worked the seventh, with Andrew Chafin pitching the eighth and Randall Delgado working a perfect ninth. Delgado would earn the win.

Jason Hammel was strong for the Cubs, picthing seven innings and allowing the one run on only four hits. Pedro Strop worked the eighth and was perfect. Juston Grimm came on in the ninth and it was not easy. Paul Goldschmidt flew out to the warning track in left center to open the bottom of the ninth. David Peralta drew a four pitch walk. Brian McCann pinch hit for the pitcher and he drew a four pitch walk. Ketel Marte then lined one off the leg of Grimm, loading the bases with just one out. Grimm then got Castillo down 0-2 before throwing a slider in the dirt, that went all the way to the backstop, allowing Peralta to score the winning run from third.

The series will now head back to Chicago for a decisive Game #5 on Thursday evening. Jake Arrieta (1-0) is scheduled to start for the Cubs. Michael Pineda (0-1) will likely get the start for the DBacks, but manager CHip Hale said almost everyone will be available if necessary,

              NLDS: Game #5

              ARIZONA 6, CHICAGO 2
              (Arizona wins series 3-2)

The DBacks celebrate as they advance to the NLCS.

Jake Arrieta can only watch as Ketel Marte takes him deep in the second inning.

              10/12/16
Chicago, IL (AP) – The Arizona Diamondbacks got to Jake Arrieta early and were able to cruise to a 6-2 victory over the Chicago Cubs in the deciding Game #5 of the National League Division Series. The win sends Arizona to the National League Championship Series where they will face the division rival San Francisco Giants. For the Cubs, it is another bitter end to the year and an extension of their 109 year Worls Series drought.

Jake Arrieta can't even look as David Peralta hammers one into the seats.
The Diamondbacks jumped on Jake Arrieta in the first inning. Yasmany Tomas drew a one out walk and Paul Goldschmidt lined a rocket single to right. David Peralta then singled to center to score Tomas, but Goldy was thrown out at third on the play.

The Cubs would get that run back in the bottom of the first as Anthony Rizzo homered to dead center off of Michael Pineda. Just before that home run, Kris Bryant had singled, but was thrown out trying to steal second, in what turned out to be a huge play.

Arizona would reclaim the lead in the second as Ketel Marte led off the inning with an opposite field blast off of Jake Arrieta. He hit a hanging slider over the wall in left center to put Arizona up 2-1.

In the bottom of the second, Michael Pineda left the game after two pitches with a soreness in his shoulder. Nate Karns came on in relief.

In the third, the Dbacks again got to Arrieta. Jean Segura singled and Yasmany Tomas was hit by a pitch. They successfully pulled off a double steal to move up to second and third. Jean Segura would score on a wild pitch from Arrieta, and Tomas scored on a Paul Goldschmidt ground out to second to make it 4-1. David Peralta then launched a long home run to center to make it 5-1.

Arrieta would get the hook after giving up a lead off single to Brandon Drury in the fourth. His line was ugly, allowing six runs on six hits with a strike out, walk, hit batter and wild pitch. Drury would come around to score on another wild pitch. This time from reliever Brad Brach.

Kris Bryant would lead off the bottom of teh fourth with a single just past a diving Ketel Marte. Marte left the game with an injured hand. Kyle Schwarber would double and Dexter Fowler hit a sacrifice fly to score Bryant to cut the DBacks lead to 6-2.

Pitching then took the game over with neither team pushing across another run. Nate Karns earned the win, going five innings in relief of the injured Pineda. Dominic Leone, Nick Vincent and Andrew Chafin finished off the Cubs, allowing just two hits over the final three innings to clinch it.

David Peralta was the offensive hero in this one, going 2 for 4 with the home run and two RBIs. Ketel Marte went 1 for 2 with teh home run before leaving the game. Manager CHip Hale thought that both he and Pineda would be available for the National League Championship Series that begins on Saturday.

This will be Arizona's first trip to the NLCS since 2007 when they were swept by the Colorado Rockies.

The DBacks would double that lead in the fifth. Paul Goldschmidt tripled off of the wall in center, scoring Yasmany Tomas. Welington Castillo then came through with a two-out single to left to score Goldy to make it 4-0.

                      NLCS: Game #2

                      SAN FRANCISCO 7, ARIZONA 4 (15)

Brandon Crawford launched a three-run blast off of Dominic Leone in the top of the 15th.

                      10/16/16
Phoenix, AZ (AP) – The San Francisco Giants avoided falling into a deep hole in the National League Championship Series by rallying and winning a 15th inning marathon, 7-4 over the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field on Sunday night. The four hour and 49 minute marathon was won when Brandon Crawford hit a three-run shot off of Dominic Leone in the top of the 15th after Leone had intentionally walked Brandon Belt.

Hunter Pence was able to avoid the tag to tie the game in the top of the eighth.
Neither team had a hit through the first three innings with Jeff Samardzija and Patrick Corbin dealing early on. But in the top of the fourth, San Francsico would strike first as Buster Posey caught a hanging slider and put it into the seats in left center to put the Giants ahead 1-0.

Not to be outdown, David Peralta made Arizona's first hit of the game a home run also, Hitting one into the pool in right center to tie the game at 1-1 in the bottom half of the fourth.

Arizona would go in front in the fifth. Jean Segura singled, then stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. He would score on a Yasmany Tomas single. After Paul Goldschmidt reached on a throwing error, David Peralta doubled to right to score Tomas, but Goldy was thrown out trying to score and Arizona lead 3-1.

Brandon Belt would tie the game in the seventh as he blasted a two-run shot deep into the right field bleachers off of Patrick Corbin.

But once again the DBacks responded. Socrates Brito tripled to open the bottom of the seventh and scored as Matt Belisle uncorked a wild pitch.

The Giants would tie it up in the top of the eighth off of Daniel Hudson. He got the first two men out that he faced, but gave up a single to Hunter Pence. Pence then stole second and Buster Posey drew a walk. Brandon Belt then lined a single between Lamb and Marte into left. Yasmany Tomas' throw was up the line and Pence tied the game at 4-4. Hudson would strike out Crawford to get out of the jam with the game still tied.

The DBacks had a chance to win it in the 10th, advancing Yasmany Tomas to third with two outs, but Jake Lamb grounded out to end the threat.

In the 15th, Dominic Leone came on in relief of Rubby De La Rosa, who tossed three shut out innings. HUnter Pence doubled to right center to open the inning. Backup catcher Andrew Susac popped out on a sacrifice bunt attempt. Brandon Belt was then intentionally walked and Brandon Crawford hit the first pitch that he saw into the seats in right to make it 7-4.

Santiago Casilla was able to to close out the win to send the series back to San Francisco tied at 1-1 and breathing life into the Giants. Brandon Belt had a night for the Giants, going 3 for 6 with ahome run and three RBIs so the decision to walk him wasn't horrible. HUnter Pence went 3 for 7 with a single, double and triple.

David Peralta went 3 for 5 with a single, double and home run for Arizona.

Michael Pineda (0-1, 5.14) will face Madison Bumgarner (1-0, 3.46) on Tuesday night in Game #3 at AT&T Park.

Johnny Cueto shook off a shaky start to dominate the DBacks in the pivitol Game #5.

                              10/20/16
San Francisco, CA (AP) – The San Francisco Giants are now on the brink of a World Series berth after they took care of the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-2 in Game #5 of the National League Championship Series at AT&T Park on Thursday evening. Johnny Cueto pitched eight solid innings, allowing only one run on just two base hits to help the Giants in their quest to return to the World Series.

Brandon Belt hammers the first pitch that he saw from Andrew Chafin in the seventh.
Arizona would grab the lead in the top of the first off of Johnny Cueto. Socrates Brito drew a walk to open the game. He advanced to third on a Paul Goldschmidt single to right. Brito would then score on a fielder's choice as David Peralta bounced one between the mound and third, and Cueto went home with it, but could not get the sliding Brito.

San Francisco would have a chance to tie in the bottom of the first after back-to-back singles from Hunter Pence and Buster Posey. But Nate Karns worked out of trouble by striking out Brandon Belt and getting Brandon Crawford to bounce out to second.

The Giants would tie it up in the second though. Matt Duffy tripled to open the inning. Denard Span then reached on a fielder's choice as Duffy bluffed home and Paul Goldschmidt threw home instead of taking the out at first. Johnny Cueto then walked to load the bases with just one out. Joe Panik hit a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Duffy to tie the game at 1-1. HUnter Pence then flew out to deep center as Karns tightroped out of trouble again.

Buster Posey singled to right to open the third. He advanced to second on a wild pitch, and went to third on a fly ball to right from Brandon Belt. Brandon Crawford lined a single through the right side, allowing Posey to score and give the Giants the lead.

In the sixth with Rubby De La Rosa on the mound in relief of Karns, Denard Span singled to right to open the inning. Gregor Blanco lined out to Ketel Marte at short. Johnny Cueto then reached on a throwing error by Paul Goldschmidt while Span advanced to second. Joe Panik walked to load the bases. De La Rosa then got Pence to bounce one back up the middle, but Chris Owings had the ball take a bad hop over his glove and into center, allowing both Span and Cueto to score to make it 4-1. Randall Delgado came in and got Buster Posey to bounce into a 4-6-3 inning ending double play.

In the seventh, Andrew Chafin came on in relief and for the second time in the series, saw his first pitch leave the yard for a home run. This time it was Brandon Belt that homered to right to make it 5-1. Belt homered off of Chafin in Game #3 in the seventh, also on the first pitch that he threw.

Johnny Cueto went eight innings, allowing just the two hits and one run. He struck out five and walked three. George Kontos came on in the ninth and gave up a lead off double to David Peralta. After getting Welington Castillo to line out to deep center, and Ketel Marte to bounce out, he allowed Jake Lamb to line an RBI single to left. Santiago Castillo then came on and walked Chris Owings to bring the tying run to the plate. Pinch hitter Jean Segura popped out to short center to end it and leave the Giants just 27 outs away from another World Series appearance. They won the Series in 2010, 2012, and 2014.

The series now returns to Arizona for Game #6 on Saturday evening with Shelby Miller (1-0, 1.32) going up against Jeff Samardzija (0-0, 3.00) as the DBacks look to extend the series to a seventh game on Sunday night.

The Giants celebrated the fourth National League Pennant in the past seven years.

                                10/22/16
Phoenix, AZ (AP) – The San Francisco Giants defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-0 on Saturday night at Chase Field to win the National League Pennant winning the National League Championship Series four games to two. Jeff Samadzija tossed a complete game two-hitter as the Giants head to their fourth World Series in seven years.

Buster Bosey ripped a two-run single down the line in the third.
San Francisco would get all the offense that they would need for Jeff Samardzija in the bottom of the third. Buster Posey lined a two-out, two-run single down the line into left field with the bases loaded off of Shelby Miller to put the Giants up 2-0.

The Giants would extend the lead to 4-0 in the fifth as Hunter Pence hit a two-out, two-run home run into the Giants bullpen.

Matt Duffy would add a solo shot to left in the ninth off of Daniel Hudson to make it 5-0.

Jeff Samardzija (1-0) was dominant, allowing just two base hits and walking one, while striking out four.

The story in this series was the Giants pitching. They led the National League during the regular season in ERA, and dominated the DBacks in the NLCS, shutting them out in two of the last three games.

San Francsico will face the Boston Red Sox in the World Series after the Red Sox defeated the Seattle Mariners four games to one in the ALCS. Boston defeated Houston in 15 innings in the AL Wild Card, then swept the Blue Jays in the ALDS. The World Series begins next Thursday in San Francsico.
