    Game #138

    ARIZONA 6, LOS ANGELES 2

Ketel Marte hit a home run into the DBacks bullpen.

    9/6/16
Los Angeles, CA (AP) – The Arizona Diamondbacks extended their winning streak to four games on Tuesday evening with a 6-2 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium. The win kept the Diamondbacks just two games back of the San Francisco Giants in the National League West.

Yasmany Tomas went 2 for 4 with a home run and extended his hitting streak to 10 games..
Once again, Arizona jumped on the Dodgers right from the start. Jake Lamb hit a two-run triple in the top of the first inning to stake the DBacks and Shelby Miller to an early 2-0 advantage.

The DBacks (78-60) would extend that lead in the fourth. Shelby Miller helped his own cause with an RBI single back up the middle to score Yasmany Tomas. Nick Ahmed then grounded out to Chase Utley at second, allowing Brian McCann to score to make it 4-0.

Yasmany Tomas hit a solo home run in the sixth, his 15th, off of Louis Coleman. Ketel Marte then added a solo shot of his own in the eighth off of Pedro Baez to put the DBacks up 6-0. For Marte, it was his fifth home run on the season.

Los Angeles (75-63) would get two back in the bottom of the ninth as Adrian Gonzalez hit a two-run home run off of reliever Braden Shipley.

The series concludes on Wednesday evening as the DBacks will go for the sweep. It will be Robbie Ray (7-9, 3.99) going up against a Dodgers starter TBD.

Notes: OF David Peralta, the team leader with 40 home runs, injured his back during batting practice and was unable to go in the game. He is listed as day-to-day with back stiffness, and was replaced in RF by Peter O'Brien. The club does not think that the injury is serious and he should miss only a few days.

      Game #139

      ARIZONA 4, LOS ANGELES 3

Peter O'Brien drove in three to help the DBacks to the series sweep.

      9/7/16
Los Angeles, CA (AP) – The Arizona Diamondbacks seem to have turned things around as they closed off their eight game road trip by winning the final five games. On Wednesday evening, the DBacks outlasted the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-3 to sweep their three game series and stay just two games back of the division leading San Francisco Giants.

Tyler Clippard came out of the pen to earn his ninth save.
Arizona (79-60) got to Dodgers starter Mike Bolsinger early on, scoring two in the first and single runs in the second and third as they built a 4-2 lead after 2 1/2 innings.

In the first, Socrates Brito and Paul Goldschmidt both drew walks. Peter O'Brien then lined a one-out two-run double to right center to put the DBacks up 2-0. In the second, Socrates Brito lined a two-out RBI single to left, scoring Chris Owings to make it 3-0.

The Dodgers (75-64) would get two back in the bottom of the second off of Robbie Ray. Justin Turner singled to center to open the inning. Scott Van Slyke then slashed an RBI double off of the wall in left center to score Turner. Van Slyke would score on a sacrifice fly, cutting the DBacks lead to 3-2.

Arizona would extend their lead to 4-2 in the third. Paul Goldschmidt led the inning off with an infield single. He then stole second, and score on a Peter O'Brien RBI single to center.

The Dodgers would pull to within 4-3 in the sixth off of reliever Tyler Wagner. Three straight singles (Corey Seager, Kike Hernandez, and Justin Turner) would get the Dodgers to within one.

Dominic Leone and Tyler Clippard would shut down the Dodgers and record the final nine outs without allowing a runner to reach base. Clippard picked up his ninth save.

Arizona will now head home for a big ten-game home stand beginning with a three-game series with first place San Francisco (81-58).

            Game #140

            SAN FRANCISCO 2, ARIZONA 0

Johnny Cueto brought his "A" game on Friday night.

            9/9/16
Phoenix, AZ (AP) – The San Francisco Giants used a masterful pitching performance from Johnny Cueto to earn a hard fought 2-0 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday night at Chase Field. The win moved the Giants three games clear of the DBacks in the race for the National League West title.

Hunter Pence provided all the offense that the Giants would need to pick up the win in game one.
San Francisco (82-58) would get all of the offense that they would need in the top of the third off of Nate Karns. Gregor Blanco was hit by a pitch on an 0-2 count to lead off the inning. He was erased as Johnny Cueto's sacrifice bunt attempt saw Paul Goldschmidt throw to second and get Blanco. Denard Span then drew a four pitch walk. Hunter Pence lined a ball just over Chris Owings head and into the gap in left center, scoring both Cueto and Span to put the Giants up 2-0.

That was all Johnny Cueto would need as he went the distance for the complete game shutout. He scattered four hits and struck out five, walking none. Twice the Diamondbacks got a runner to third, but failed to come up with the big hit.

Nate Karns (9-7) was the hard luck loser. He went six innings, allowing the two runs on just five hits. He struck out four and walked one.

Yasmany Tomas' 11 game hitting streak ended. He went 0 for 3.

The series resumes on Saturday evening with Michael Pineda (14-6, 2.73) taking the bump for Arizona, against Jeff Samardzjia (12-6, 2.85).

              Game #141

              ARIZONA 6, SAN FRANCISCO 2

Welington Castillo hit a pinch-hit solo home run to lead off the seventh.

              9/10/16
Phoenix, AZ (AP) – The Arizona Diamondbacks picked up a huge win on Saturday night, defeating the first place San Francisco Giants 6-2 at Chase Field in downtown Phoenix. Michael Pineda was in top form, and Welington Castillo came off the bench and drove in three runs to help Arizona moved to within two games of the first place Giants.

Castillo followed his home run with a two-run single in the eighth.
Arizona (80-61) grabbed the lead in the bottom of the third as Ketel Marte lined a one-out, two-run single to center. He was out trying to advance to second.

Peter O'Brien scored in the fourth after he doubled to open the inning, and scored on a Yasmany Tomas single to right.

Michael Pineda cruised through the first five innings, but ran into some trouble in the sixth. Angel Pagan lined a one-out pinch hit single to center. Denard Span then followed that with a two run shot off around the foul pole in right. It was initially ruled a foul ball, but replay conclusively showed that it was indeed fair and the Giants cut the lead to 3-2. Hunter Pence laced a double off the wall in left to follow. He advanced to third on a groundout and Brandon Belt drew a walk. But Pineda got out of teh jam by getting Crawford to bounce out to second to end the inning.

Welington Castillo then took the game over. He pinch hit for Brian McCann to lead off the seventh against reliever Josh Osich. Castillo hit a hanging slider into the seats in left to make it 4-2. Castillo then hit a two-run single in the eighth to make it 6-2.

The DBacks bullpen was excellent again, working two scoreless innings in relief of Michael Pineda, who picked up his 15th win.

The series wraps on Sunday afternoon with Rubby De La Rosa (9-4, 3.10) taking on Chris Heston (10-8, 2.93).

                SAN FRANCISCO 3, ARIZONA 0

Matt Duffy hits a huge two-run blast in the seventh.

                9/11/16
Phoenix, AZ (AP) – The San Francisco Giants used excellent pitching to take the rubber match of this huge weekend series by defeating the Arizona Diamondbacks 3-0 at Chase Field on Sunday afternoon. Chris Heston tossed eight shutout innings, allowing just three hits as the Giants leave Arizona with a three game lead in the National League West.

Chris Heston was brilliant on the mound, tossing eight shutout innings.
San Francisco (83-59) grabbed the lead in the top of the second as Brandon Belt hit a solo shot into the bleachers in right field. That was all that junk baller Chris Heston would need. He was effectively wild all day, having the DBacks swinging at air, or weakly grounding out.

Heston (11-8) struck out seven, while walking two. He lasted into the ninth, but a leadoff single from Chris Herrmann chassed him for closer Santiago Casilla. Casilla came in and got Goldy to fly out to right, then induced a game ending double play from David Peralta. He picked up his 35th save on the season.

Rubby De La Rosa pitched well for the DBacks, but two mistakes cost him. He gave up the solo homer to Belt in the second, then dished up a two-run shot to Matt Duffy in the top of the seventh. He could have gotten out of the inning, but Brandon Crawford made a great play avoiding a tag from Paul Goldschmidt on a swinging bunt up the first base line that Goldy fielded. De La Rosa then worked the count to Duffy to 3-2 before he took a fastball and put it into the seats to move the Giants up 3-0.

The loss dropped Arizona three games back with 20 games left. They also trail in the National League Wild Card by one game. They finished the season series with San Francisco with a (12-7) record.

Up next are the Colorado Rockies, who come to Chase Field for a three game series. The Rox are currently in last place in the National League West at (54-89).

                      COLORADO 7, ARIZONA 6 (11)

Rookie Tom Murphy lays down a perfect suicide squeeze in the top of the 11th.

                      9/12/16
Phoenix, AZ (AP) – If the Arizona Diamondbacks fail to make the postseason, they may look back at this game and rue what might have been. On Monday evening, the Diamondbacks blew a 5-0 lead and lost 7-6 in 11 innings to the last place Colorado Rockies at Chase Field. Rookie Tom Murphy's suicide squeeze in the top of the 11th, plated Ryan Raburn with the go ahead run to complete the comeback.

Charlie Blackmon hits a huge three-run home run in the top of the seventh to cut the DBacks lead to 5-4.
Arizona (80-63) looked to be in control from the start. Shelby Miller had his good stuff on the mound and the DBacks staked him to a 5-0 lead.

Paul Goldschmidt hit a two-run bullet into the right field seats in the first inning to put Arizona up 2-0. It was his 31st on the year.

Brandon Drury lined an RBI double to center in the fourth to move the DBacks in front 3-0. They would make it 5-0 in the fifth as Socrates Brito hit his first home run on the year, a solo shot off the top of the wall in left, and David Peralta grounded into a fielder's choice, allowing Ketel Marte to score.

Shelby Miller was cruising until the top of the seventh. He got the first two batters out, but would not retire another. DJ LaMahieu, Ben Paulsen and Carlos Gonzalez all singled to cut the lead to 5-1. Charlie Blackmon then hit the first pitch that he saw into the pool and it was suddenly 5-4.

The DBacks would get one back in the bottom half Yasmany Tomas hit a two-out RBI double to left that scored Ketel Marte.

But the DBacks bullpen, which has been excellent as of late, faltered. Tyler Clippard came on in the ninth and gave up a leadoff double to Ben Paulsen. After getting Carlos Gonzalez to pop out, Charlie Blackmon doubled into the right field corner to score Paulsen, cutting the lead to just one run. Ryan Rayburn then lined a single to left, but Yasmany Tomas' throw to teh plate was up the line and the game was tied at 6-6.

Arizona almost won it in the bottom of the ninth. Goldy singled to left with one out off of Chad Qualls. David Peralta then lined a ball off of shortstop David Descalso for a double. Goldy tried to score on the play, but was gunned down at the plate.

In the 11th, Randall Delgado came on to pitch for Arizona. He got Charlie Blackmon to fly out deep to right. He then walked Ryan Rayburn. Rayburn advanced to third on a grounder that hopped over Goldy's glove at first setting up runner's on the corners with just one out. Rookie Tom Murphy pinch hit and laid down a perfect suicide squeeze to score Rayburn with the go ahead run.

Jake McGee came on and pitched a perfect ninth to pick up his 33rd save.

The loss dropped the DBacks four games back of San Francisco in the West and 1 1/2 games back of the Mets for a Wild Card spot.

The series resumes on Tuesday evening with Robbie Ray (8-9, 3.98) facing Jon Gray (6-12, 5.26).

The Rockies would add a couple of runs off of reliever Evan Marshall in the seventh. Back-to-back doubles from DJ LaMahieu and Ben Paulsen accounted for the first run. Charlie Blackmon singled off of first baseman Chris Herrman to plate Paulsen to make it 7-0.

In the ninth, Tyler Wagner worked the bases loaded, then hit Daniel Descalso with a pitch to score the Rockies eighth run.

Arizona (81-64) would get their lone run in the bottom of the ninth. Brandon Drury doubled to open the ninth and scored on a two-out RBI single by David Peralta. It was Peralta's 88th RBI on the season.

Arizona will now host Los Angeles in a big four game weekend series to close the 10-game home stand. Arizona stands five games back of first-place San Francisco, and one game back of the Mets for a Wild Card. The Dodgers are two games back of Arizona.

Phoenix, AZ (AP) – The Arizona Diamondbacks picked up a big win on Thursday evening, rallying for a 3-2 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers at Chase Field. Jake Lamb came off the bench and hit a two-out, two-run pinch hit home run in the bottom of the seventh to put Arizona in front to stay.

Tyler Clippard worked a perfect ninth to pick up his 10th save.
Andre Ethier got the Dodgers off to a good start, hitting a solo home run to right in the second inning off of Michael Pineda. It was his 10th on the year.

The Diamondbacks would get that run back in the fourth as Welington Castillo laced a double off of the wall in right center, scoring Paul Goldschmidt.

Chase Utley hit a hanging slider into the seats in right field in the top of the seventh to quiet the crowd and put Los Angeles ahead 2-1. It was his fifth on the year.

In the bottom half of the seventh, Brandon Drury kept the inning alive with a two-out double to right. Los Angeles brought in Chris Hatcher, and Chip Hale went to his bench, bring ing in Jake Lamb to pinch hit for Nick Ahmed. Lamb would crush a high fastball to dead center, hitting it just below the scoreboard to put Arizona in front 3-2.

The DBacks then sent out Archie Bradley and Tyler Clippard and they each worked perfect innings of relief to seal the win. Clippard picked up his 10th save and Arizona moved back into a tie for the National League Wild Card with the Mets.

Paul Goldschmidt went 2 for 4 with a run scored. He now leads the National League with 183 hits.

Michael Pineda (16-6) picked up the win, going seven innings and allowing the two solo home runs. He struck out six and walked just one.

The series resumes on Friday night with Rubby De La Rosa (9-5, 3.14) going up against Kenta Maeda (11-9, 3.94).
