        Game #132

        SAN FRANCISCO 10, ARIZONA 9

Matt Duffy rips one down the line to win it for San Francisco.

        8/30/16
San Francisco, CA (AP) – On a night when the Arizona Diamondbacks offense finally woke up, it was the pitching that did them in as they lost a heartbreaking 10-9 walk off to the San Francisco Giants at AT&T Park. The Giants rallied from a 7-1 deficit to win it in the bottom of the ninth on a Matt Duffy RBI single.

The Giants walk it off to cap huge comeback.
Arizona (74-58) came out swinging in this one, with a 15 MPH wind blowing out to center. The Diamondbacks moved out to a 7-1 lead after three and a half innings.

In the first, David Peralta blasted a two-run shot to center to put the DBacks in front 2-0. Brian McCann lined a two-run double into the left field corner in the second to extend the lead to 4-0.

Gregor Blanco doubled to center off of Rubby De La Rosa in the bottom of the second, scoring Denard Span to got the Giants on the board.

Paul Goldschmidt and David Peralta hit back-to-back bombs in the third to make it 6-1, off of Jeff Samardjzia. Peralta's shot was his second of the game and 38th on the season. It travelled an estimated 448 feet and hit off of the scoreboard in center.

A Brian McCann solo home run to left in the fourth, his 27th, made it 7-1 and it looked like Arizona would get a huge road win to move to within 2 1/2 games of the Giants.

But then the Giants batted around in the fifth, scoring six times to tie the game at 7-7. Buster Posey lined an RBI single to start the rally. Hunter Pence then scored on a fielding error by Ketel Marte on a Brandon Belt grounder. A Carl Crawford RBI single cut the lead to 7-4. Denard Span doubled to right to plate another run. Rubbu De La Rosa then hit Gregor Blanco and his day was over, leaving with the bases loaded and just one out.

Dominic Leone came on and got Angel Pagan to pop out. Joe Panik then singled back up the middle to score Crawford and Span to tie the game at 7-7.

But reliever George Kontos could not hold the DBacks in the top of the sixth as Jacoby Ellsbury hit a two-run blast to left, allowing the DBacks to retake the lead at 9-7.

Gregor Blaco would hit an inside the park home run in the seventh off of the brick wall in right, off of Andrew Chafin to cut the DBacks lead to just one. It was his seventh on the year.

A Brandon Belt two-out RBI single in the bottom of the eighth tied the game. Archie Bradley gave up a one-out double to Hunter Pence, setting up Belt to tie it up.

In the ninth, Bradley gave up back-to-back singles to Matt Duffy and Denard Span before yielding to Nick Vincent. Gregor Blanco greeted him with an RBI single past Paul Goldschmidt down the right field line, scoring Duffy to win it in walk-off style. Blanco went 3 for 4 with the inside the park homer and drove in three to lead the Giants.

David Peralta had a big day for the Diamondbacks, going 3 for 4 with a double, two home runs and three RBIs. Arizona hit five home runs, yet suffered the devastating loss.

The quick two-game series concludes on Wednesday afternoon with Shelby Miller (11-7, 2.88) going up against Chris Heston (10-8, 3.10).

          Game #133

          SAN FRANCISCO 1, ARIZONA 0 (10)

Another walk off win for the Giants.

          8/31/16
San Francisco, CA (AP) – The San Francisco Giants did it again on Wednesday afternoon, walking it off in a 1-0 extra inning win over the Arizona Diamondbacks at AT&T Park to sweep their quick two game mid-week series. Austin Slater's RBI single to left in the bottom of the 10th gave the Giants the win and moved their lead to 5 1/2 games in the National League West.

Arizona (74-59) wasted a great pitching performance from Shelby Miller, who pitched seven innings, allowing just four hits, while striking out four and walking just one. Randall Delgado came on in relief and was lights out in the eighth and ninth, but gave up a leadoff double to Matt Duffy to lead off the tenth. Denard Span then reached on an attempted sacrifice bunt that Jake Lamb just held onto.

Tim Hudson came on in relief and the Giants blew a suicide squeeze as Gregor Blanco could not lay down the bunt and Matt Duffy was tagged out at home. With Span moving up on the play, Arizona decided to intentionally walk Blanco to face pinch hitter Austin Slater. The move backfired as Slater lined a single to left. Yasmany Tomas came up throwing and threw a perfect strike home to beat Span, but Welington Castillo dropped the ball and the Giants pulled out the victory.

The Diamondbacks offensive woes returned, one day after scoring nine runs and pounding out 13 hits. On Wednesday afternoon, with a stiff breeze blowing straight in from center, the DBacks were limited to just four hits in 10 innings. Chris Heston started and went eight innings, allowing three hits, while striking out four and walking four. Josh Osich (6-1) picked up the win in relief, pitching the ninth and tenth for the Giants.

Arizona will have Thursday off before a three game weekend series in Colorado against the last place Rockies (49-84).

Game Notes: Jacoby Ellsbury left the game in the first inning with a wrist injury after stealing second and third base. After the game it was learned that he broke his left wrist and will miss 2-3 months effectively ending his season. The DBacks called up outfielder Peter O'Brien from Triple-A Reno to fill his roster slot.

That is why I love this game! I have been struggling at the plate and finally have a breakout game, only to see my pitching staff blow it. Then I get a great pitching performance and my offense goes back in the tank. Gotta keep plugging away.

                      Game #134

                      COLORADO 6, ARIZONA 3

DJ LeMahieu went deep in the fifth inning.

                      9/2/16
Denver, CO (AP) – If the Arizona Diamondbacks end up missing the playoffs this season, they may look back and regret how they played against the worst teams in the National League down the stretch. On Friday night, the Diamondbacks dropped a 6-3 decision to the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field in chilly Denver.

Ben Paulsen had a big night, going 4 for 5.
The last place Rockies got off to a quick start off of Robbie Ray. Ben Paulsen hit a two-out double in the second, and scored on a single from the light hitting rookie Chris Nelson.

Paul Goldschmidt put the DBacks in front in the top of the third, hitting a two-run shot to left off of Chad Bettis. The 406 foot shot was his 29th on the year.

Robbie Ray threw a ton of pitches through the first four innings, and it caught up with him in the fifth. After striking out Bettis to start the inning, DJ LeMahieu homered to left to tie the game. He them got Charlie Blackmon out trying to reach on a bunt. Carlos Gonzalez and Ryan Raburn both singled and Trevor Story doubled off the wall in left, scoring both to put the Rockies up 4-2.

In the sixth, the DBacks would get one back. Paul Goldschmidt singled to center and advanced to second on a wild pitch. He would score on a two-out RBI single from Jake Lamb to cut the Padres lead to just one.

Randall Delgado came on in relief of Archie Bradley, but could not shut down the Rockies. He gave up three straight singles to DJ LeMahieu, Charlie Blackmon and Carlos Gonzales as the Rockies went back up by two. In the seventh, the Rockies got a two-out RBI single from DJ LeMahieu to extend the lead to 6-3.

Colorado's bullpen then did their job as Boone Logan and Jake McGee shut the DBacks down in the final two innings to preserve the win. Chad Bettis (4-4) picked up the win for the Rockies, tossing seven innings and allowing three runs on seven hits. He struck out four and walked one.

Robbie Ray (7-9) took the loss for Arizona. He lasted just 4 2/3, allowing four runs on nine hits. He struck out six and walked none.

The Rockies pounded out 19 hits in the game to win their 50th game of the year. The loss dropped Arizona six games back of the Giants in the National League West.

The series resumes on Saturday evening with Nate Karns (8-6, 2.68) facing John Gray (5-11, 5.30).

The Rockies would get one back in the bottom of the eighth off of struggling reliever Nick Vincent. Vincent ended up getting the final six outs, allowing three hits and a run.

The series wraps on Sunday afternoon with DBacks ace Michael Pineda (13-6, 2.74) taking the bump against Johnny Jorgensen (4-7, 6.07).

                          ARIZONA 5, COLORADO 2

Brandon Drury homered in the second inning.

                          9/4/16
Denver, CO (AP) – The Arizona Diamondbacks picked up a big win in the rubber game of their three game weekend series in Denver with a 5-2 victory over the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field. Brandon Drury and Welington Castillo each hit two-run home runs to help pace the DBacks and move them back into one of the National League Wild Card spots.

Brad Ziegler made his return to the DBacks on Sunday.
Arizona (76-50) grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top of the second as Brandon Drury homered to right, just clearing the wall. The two-run shot was his third on the season.

Ben Paulsen hit a solo shot in the bottom of the second off of Michael Pineda. It was his eighth on the year, and second in two days.

Welington Castillo answered that in the top of the third, hitting a two-run wall scraper off of Johnny Jorgensen to make it 4-1. It was Castillo's 9th on the season.

In the fourth, Socrates Brito drew a two out walk, then stole second, and scored on a Ketel Marte bloop single to left.

The Rockies had a chance to make some noise in the seventh off of Michael Pineda as Carlos Gonzalez and Charlie Blackmon hit back-to-back singles to open the inning. Pineda got Trevor Story to bounce out to second with both runners advancing. CarGo then scored on a wild pitch to cut the lead to 5-2. But Pineda got Ben Paulsen to hit a shallow fly to center and got Charlie Nelson to bounce out to Goldy to get out of the inning.

The DBacks bullpen then locked it down with Daniel Hudson pitching a perfect eighth and Brad Ziegler pitching the ninth to pick up his 10th save on the season. It was his first save since May 14th.

Yasmany Tomas went 3 for 4 with two doubles and a run scored. He also robbed DJ LeMahieu of a home run on the first pitch of the game. Ketel Marte went 3 for 4 with a double, RBI and run scored.

Arizona will now travel to Los Angeles for a huge three game series with the Dodgers. The Labor Day starters will be Alex Wood (8-7, 3.63) for the Dodgers and Rubby De La Rosa (8-4, 3.16) for the DBacks. Clayton Kershaw will not pitch in the series as he is on the 15-day disabled list with an injured shoulder.

Los Angeles, CA (AP) – The Arizona Diamondbacks picked up a huge win on Labor Day, defeating the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-1 at Dodger Stadium to open a crucial three game series. Home runs from David Peralta and Welington Castillo paced the DBacks as they won their third straight game.

Rubby De La Rosa was sharp as he picked up his ninth win on the season.
Arizona (77-50) blew some great scoring chances early on in this one, grounding into double plays in each of the first three innings, and leaving three runners in scoring position.

In the fourth, Paul Goldschmidt and David Peralta drew walks to open the inning. Welington Castillo bounced back to the mound, advancing both runners. Yasmany Tomas and Brandon Drury then lined back-to-back RBI singles to put the DBacks up 2-0. Nick Ahmed grounded into a 6-4-3 double play, their fourth of the game to end the inning.

A Kike Hernandez RBI double into the right field corner got the Dodgers on teh scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth off of Rubby De La Rosa. Andrew Chafin came in to get the final two outs of the innings.

David Peralta and Welington Castillo hit back-to-back home runs off of reliever Chris Hatcher to open the ninth. It was Peralta's 40th on the year. His shot hit off of the batter's eye in center, approximately 449 feet from home plate.

Tyler Clippard came on to record the final three outs and earn his eighth save on the year. The DBacks bullpen pitched 3 2/3 innings of hitless relief.

The series resumes on Tuesday evening with Shelby Miller (11-7, 2.77) going up against Kenta Maeda (11-8, 3.82).
