    Game #125

    ATLANTA 1, ARIZONA 0

Julio Teheran dominated the DBacks on Monday evening in Atlanta's 1-0 win.

    8/22/16
Phoenix, AZ (AP) – The worst team in baseball came to Chase Field on Monday night and got a masterful pitching performance from Julio Teheran as the Atlanta Braves shutout the Arizona Diamondbacks 1-0. Teheran tossed eight shutout innings, allowing just two hits, while striking out five and walking only one.

A.J. Pierzynski drove in the game's only run in the top of the second.
Atlanta (43-82) got the only offense that they would need in the second inning on three singles. A.J. Pierzynski came through with a two-out line drive over shortstop Nick Ahmed. Atlanta would not get another hit until the ninth inning when Freddie Freeman extending his hitting streak to 24 games with a double to left.

Nick Karns (8-6) was the hard luck loser in this one. He went 5 2/3 innings, allowing the one run on three hits. He struck out six and walked none. He left the game after he was hit by a line drive that ricocheted off of his left leg. He is listed as day-to-day but is unlikely to miss his next start.

Archie Bradley threw 3 1/3 innings of relief, allowing just one hit. He also had one of the two Arizona hits in the ballgame, a single in the bottom of the sixth.

The loss dropped Arizona 1 1/2 games back of San Francisco in the National League West.

The series resumes on Tuesday evening with Arizona ace Michael Pineda (12-6, 2.69) going up against Jhoulys Chacin (3-6, 4.02).

      Game #126

      ATLANTA 4, ARIZONA 3

Chris Owings was gunned down at the plate to end the game.

      8/23/16
Phoenix, AZ (AP) – The Arizona Diamondbacks lost their second straight one run home game to the worst team in baseball on Tuesday evening, dropping a 4-3 decision to the Atlanta Braves at Chase Field. Chris Owings was gunned down at the plate to end the game to preserve the second straight win for the Braves.

A.J. Pierzynski had another big hit for the Braves, going deep in the second inning.
The Braves (44-82) grabbed a 2-0 lead in the second off of Michael Pineda when A.J. Pierzynski hit a rocket into the seats in left. It was the first earned runs allowed by Pineda since his first start for Arizona, spanning four starts.

The Dbacks (72-54) would tie it up in the bottom half of the second when Brandon Drury hit a two run shot to center. It was his first on the season. They would take the lead in the third as Ketel Marte scored on a Welington Castillo groundout.

That lead would hold up until the sixth. Mallex Smith reached on a bunt single to open the inning. He stole second and advanced to third on a Freddie Freeman ground out. Nick Markakis then lined a huge two-out single through the right side to score Smith to tie the game at 3-3.

Mallex Smith was at it again in the eighth. He hit a one out single to right off of Andrew Chafin. He reached second on a wild pitch, and stole third. He scored the go ahead run when Freddie Freeman hit a sacrifice fly to center. Freeman would go 0 for 3 with an RBI in the game, ending his 24-game hitting streak.

The DBacks had golden opportunities to score in the eighth and ninth. In the eighth, they had men on the corners with Goldy at the plate. He hit a fly ball to center, but Nick Ahmed stumbled tagging up and had to hold at third. Welington Castillo then hit a rocket that somehow Braves second baseman Jace Peterson laid out and caught, robbing the DBacks of the tying run.

In the ninth, David Peralta singled to open the inning off of Braves closer Jason Grilli. Socrates Brito came in to pinch run. Brandon Drury flew out to left. Chris Owing sthen hit a soft liner over second that no one could get to, but Brito got caught in between first and second and was forced out. Owings then stole second and Yasmany Tomas lined a single to right. Nick Markakis came up throwing and his throw was perfect, nailing Owings at the plate to end it. Grilli picked up his 28th save and the DBacks fell 2 1/2 games out of first.

The four game series resumes on Wednesday evening as the DBacks hope to at least salvage the final two games. Rubby De La Rosa (8-4, 3.16) will go up against Adam Iverson (2-5, 6.82).

          Game #127

          ATLANTA 2, ARIZONA 0 (10)

          8/24/16
Phoenix, AZ (AP) – The Arizona Diamondbacks woes continued on Wednesday evening as they were shutout again by the National League's worst team as they dropped a 2-0 decision to the Atlanta Braves in ten innings. Adam Iverson tossed eight shutout innings, allowing just three hits as the Braves won their third straight game over the Dbacks at Chase Field.

This one was a pitcher's duel with neither team scoring through nine innings. Rubby De La Rosa matched Iverson, going 7 1/3 innings, scattering six hits, while striking out five.

Finally the Braves got a beak through in the tenth. Mallex Smith opened the inning with a double off of Dominic Leone. Erick Aybar singled to left and Freddie Freeman was intentionally walked. The DBacks brought on Tyler Clippard. He gave up a sacrifice fly to Ender Inciarte and a single to Nick Markasis to allow the Braves to grab a 2-0 lead.

Jason Grilli then came on and shut down the DBacks in the bottom half to earn his 29th save.

Arizona (72-55) managed just four hits in the loss. They have scored just three runs in three games against the worst pitching staff in the National League. The DBacks are hitting an abysmal .130 (12 for 92) in this series that wraps on Thursday evening.

The worst part about the three losses is that they have allowed just seven runs!

The series wraps tomorrow evening as the DBacks look to avoid an embarrassing sweep with Shelby Miller (11-6, 2.84) going up against Bud Norris (7-9, 4.62).

Note: for some reason I deleted all of the screenshots from this game, whoops!

            Game #128

            ATLANTA 4, ARIZONA 0

Nick Markasis delivered a devastating two-run blast in the sixth.

            8/25/16
Phoenix, AZ (AP) – The Atlanta Braves completed an improbable four game sweep of the Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday evening, shutting out the struggling DBacks 4-0 at Chase Field. Bud Norris tossed a complete game shutout, scattering seven hits as he picked up his eighth win on the season.

Bud Norris looked like Cy Young on Thursday night, dominating the DBacks.
The Braves (46-82) got all the offense that they would need in the fifth as former DBacks Kelly Johnson homered to right off of Shelby Miller. Nick Markasis would add a two-run shot in the sixth off of Miller to make it 3-0.

Shelby Miller (11-7) pitched a great game, but made those two mistakes and when your team's offense is absent, that was two mistakes too many. Miller went seven innings, allowing the three earned runs on just six hits. He struck out 13, and did not walk a batter.

Archie Bradley came on in relief and gave up an insurance run in the ninth as the boos showered down from the stands.

Arizona came into this series looking to possibly retake first place in the National League West with the Giants and Dodgers playing each other, while Arizona played the worst team in baseball. Instead, they are now 3 1/2 games back, 1/2 game ahead of the Dodgers, and they are now 1/2 game out of the National League Wild Card.

Up next is the last place team in the National League Central. The Cincinnati Reds are (52-75) and will send Brandon Finnegan (3-15, 4.74) to the mound in game one against Robbie Ray (7-8, 3.92).

Notes: The Braves won the season series (5-2) shutting out the DBacks four times!

                NATIONAL LEAGUE WEST/WILD CARD STANDINGS

At one point in early July, the Diamondbacks were (62-32) and cruising in the National League West. Since then, they are (10-24), worst in the National League.

Funny thing is, I am pounding the baseball. Last game Goldschmidt goes 0 for 4 with a strikeout, fly out to warning track in dead center, line out to 7, line out to 6.

                        Game #129

                        ARIZONA 3, CINCINNATI 2

David Peralta's 36th home run on the season proved to be a game winner.

                        8/26/16
Phoenix, AZ (AP) – The Arizona Diamondbacks got some clutch hitting on Friday night to open a three game weekend series with a come-from-behind 3-2 victory over the Cincinnati Reds at Chase Field. David Peralta crushed a Steve Delabar slider deep into the right field bleachers in the bottom of the eighth to break a 2-2 tie. It was his 36th on the season.

Paul Goldschmidt blasts one deep into the left field bleachers.
Cincinnati (52-76) grabbed the lead off of Robbie Ray in the fourth as Jay Bruce knocked a one-out double off of the wall in left, scoring Joey Votto. They would add to that lead in the sixth as Votto hit a solo home run to left. It was a missile that just cleared the wall. It was his 29th on the season and gave the Reds a 2-0 lead.

The crowd at Chase Field was getting restless, as the DBacks had been shutout their previous two games and were riding a 25 inning scoreless streak to start this one. They would finally get a breakthrough in the bottom of the 6th as Paul Goldschmidt hit a moonshot into TGIFridays beyond the left field bleachers. The solo shot was his 27th and cut the lead to 2-1. It ended a 30 inning scoreless streak.

In the eighth, Jacoby Ellsbury led off and pinch hit for Chris Owings. He drew a walk and stole second. Ketel Marte then looped a single to center, scoring Ellsbury to tie the game at 2-2. It was Marte's third hit on the night. Marte then got picked off of first by Steve Delabar, and Paul Goldschmidt grounded out. David Peralta then launched the go ahead homer deep into the bleachers in right.

Tyler Clippard came on in the ninth, and was perfect in earning his 6th save. Nick Vincent (2-3) picked up the win. He got the final out of the eighth in relief of Dominic Leone.

The win moved the DBacks back into one of the two National League Wild Card slots, along with the Mets. They trail the Giants by 2 1/2 in the West.

The series continues on Saturday evening with Nate Karns (8-6, 2.69), loser of four straight decisions, facing Andy Goleski (4-7, 4.85).

                          CINCINNATI 3, ARIZONA 2

Cincinnati pushed across the game winning run in the top of the ninth.

                          8/27/16
Phoenix, AZ (AP) – The struggles of the Arizona Diamondbacks since the All-Star break continued on Saturday night as they gave up a run in the ninth to drop a 3-2 decision to the last place Cincinnati Reds at Chase Field. Zack Cosart's RBI single with none out in the ninth proved to be the game winner as the Dbacks dropped their fifth game in six on this home stand against two of the National Leagues worst teams.

Brandon Drury admires his fifth inning homerun.
The Reds got on the Dbacks early, grabbing a 1-0 lead in the top of the first off of Nate Karns. Billy Hamilton led off the game with a single to right. He advanced to third on a Joey Votto double to right, and scored on a Devin Mesoraco infield single.

Cincinnati would add a run in the fourth on a Scott Schebler sacrifice fly, driving in Brandon Phillips. Brandon Phillips led off the inning with a single to right, but advanced to third as Rickie Weeks whiffed on the ball.

Arizona (73-57) would get on the board in the fifth as Brandon Drury hit a no doubter deep into the bleachers in left to cut the Reds lead in half.

The Dbacks would tie it up in the eighth with some aggressive base running. Jake Lamb singled with one out, then advanced to third on a hit-and-run with Yasmany Tomas singling through the hole on the right side. He would score on a Brandon Drury deep sacrifice fly to left.

That setup Nick Vincent to enter from the bullpen in the ninth. He gave up double to Brandon Phillips to open the ninth. Scott Schebler then reached on an attempted sacrifice that Brandon Drury just held onto. Zack Cosart then lined a single past the drawn in infield to put the Reds up 3-2. Tyler Clippard came in to retire the Reds and get out of the inning without any further damage.

The Dbacks would have a great chance to tie in the bottom of the ninth. Brian McCann was hit by a pitch to open the ninth and Socrates Brito pinch ran for him. Jake Lamb then bounced one back to the mound. They got Brito at second, but an over throw to first allowed Lamb to end up on second with one out. He advanced to third on a long fly ball to right by Yasmany Tomas. J.J. Hoover then struck out Brandon Drury to end it and pick up his 32nd save on the season.

Arizona's offensive struggles continued on Saturday night. They have scored just eight runs in six games on this home stand against the two worst pitching staffs in the National League. That has left them (1-5) on a home stand where they felt like that could make a move in the National League West.

They will close out the home stand on Sunday afternoon with ace Michael Pineda (12-6, 2.74) facing Tim Melville (10-8, 4.76).

Phoenix, AZ (AP) – The Arizona Diamondbacks walked a tight rope in the ninth on Sunday afternoon, but escaped with a 4-3 victory over the Cincinnati Reds at Chase Field in downtown Phoenix. A botched suicide squeeze in the top of the ninth lead to a game ending double play that allowed the DBacks to take two of three from the Reds this weekend.

The Diamondbacks (74-57) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a David Peralta sacrifice fly, scoring Brian McCann, who had lead off the inning with a double.

Devin Mesoraco would put the Reds in front in the top of the third with a bases loaded two-run single to center, scoring the speedster Billy Hamilton and Joey Votto.

Jake Lamb tied the game up in the fifth with a one-out solo home run to center off of Tim Melville. It was Lamb's 14th on the year. Arizona would finally get a clutch hit in the fifth also as pitcher Michael Pineda came up with a big two-out RBI single to left, scoring Nick Ahmed, to put the DBacks in front 3-2.

Pitcher Michael Pineda was excellent again on the mound, going seven innings, and allowing just the two earned runs on only three hits. He struck out eight and walked three. His 13 wins lead the DBacks.

Pineda would get a big insurance run in the bottom of the seventh as Yasmany Tomas homered to left. The solo shot was his 14th and gave Arizona a two-run cushion.

They would need that cushion in the ninth. Manager Chip Hale went to former closer Daniel Hudson and things did not go well. He walked Brandon Phillips to open the inning. He would get Scott Schebler to bounce into a fielder's choice before allowing Zack Cosart to double off the wall in right. He then walked Jordan Pacheco to load the bases and end his night.

New closer Tyler Clippard was called upon to get the DBacks out of the jam. Billy Hamilton got a ball to sneak through the infield on the left hand side to cut the lead to 4-3. Manager Bryan Price then rolled the dice and tried a suicide squeeze to try and tie the game with just one out. But Eugenio Suarez popped up the bunt, and Tyler Clippard got off the mound quickly to catch the ball before it hit the ground. He then easily had Tyler Holt doubled off at third to end the game.

The win kept the DBacks 3 1/2 games back of the Giants heading into a huge two-game mid-week series at AT&T Park in San Francisco. The Dbacks finished the homestand just (2-5) against the two worst teams in the National League. Disappointing considering the expectations that they would have a big home stand to setup their huge series in San Francisco.

The pitching match up for game one on Tuesday will be Rubby De La Rosa (8-4, 2.98) going up against Jeff Samardzija (12-5, 2.49). Arizona led the Giants by eight games on July 8th and now trail by 3 1/2. The DBacks are just (15-32) since then.
