        Game #55

        ARIZONA 8, HOUSTON 7

Paul Goldschmidt unloads on a fourth inning grand slam.

        6/1/16
Houston, TX (AP) – The Arizona Diamondbacks rallied from an early four run deficit to defeat the Houston Astros 8-7 at Minute Maid Park on Wednesday evening in the opener of a quick two game series. Tyler White and Paul Goldschmidt each hit grand slams to lead their respective teams.

In the first inning, the Astros got Jose Altuve to single to open up the game and Carlos Gomez walked. Rubby De La Rosa would strike out George Springer, then got Evan Gattis to fly out to center. Colby Rasmus beat out an infield single to third to load the bases. De La Rosa then got Tyler White down one and two before hanging a slider that White belted over the Crawford boxes to make it 4-0.

Arizona would match that in the third after three singles from Yasmany Tomas, Jean Segura and Socrates Brito loaded the bases. Paul Goldschmidt got a hold of a 2-0 changeup and hit a no doubter out of Minute Maid Park, over the train tracks to tie the game at 4-4. Chris Herrmann would follow that up with a two-run blast of his own to right, making it 6-4.

The Astros would get one back in the bottom of the third as Evan Gattis singled home Carlos Gomez, who led off the inning woth a ringing double.

David Peralta would hit his Major League leading 17th home run on the season in the top of the fifth. A solo shot to right off of Michael Felix.

Jason Castro would tie it back up in the bottom of the sixth with a two-run shot into the Crawford boxes in left off of Rubby De La Rosa, making it 7-7. That sent De La Rosa to the showers.

Welington Castillo led off the eighth with a single back up the middle off of reliever Will Harris. He reached second on a wild pitch and advanced to third on a Chris Herrmann ground out. He would score on a Brandon Drury single to center, putting the DBacks back in front, 8-7.

Randall Delgado pitched a perfect eighth and new closer Daniel Hudson was perfect in the ninth to earn his fifth save.

The short series concludes with an afternoon game on Thursday with DBacks ace Zack Greinke (4-5, 3.60) facing Wandy Rodriguez (1-1, 3.00).

          Game #56

          ARIZONA 8, HOUSTON 2

          6/2/16
Houston, TX (AP) – The Arizona Diamondbacks won their third straight game on Thursday afternoon to sweep their two game series with the Houston Astros, 8-2 at Minute Maid Park in downtown Houston. Zack Greinke was dominant, striking out ten in going seven innings and picking up the win.

Slumping A.J. Pollock got the DBacks going in the first, hitting a two-run opposite field home run off of Wandy Rodriguez.

The Astros would come back to tie it up in the third. George Springer hit a one-out RBI triple to center, then scored on a Colby Rasmus ground out.

In the fourth, Phil Gosselin doubled home Yasmany Tomas to put the Diamondbacks back in front, 3-2. Paul Goldschmidt would add a two-run home run to right in the fifth. It was his 17th on the year, tying him with teammate David Peralta for the Major League lead in that category. Yasmany Tomas would also add a two-run home run to right in the fourth to make it a 7-2 ballgame.

The Diamondbacks would add an RBI single from Chris Owings in the eighth. But the story in this one was the pitching of Zack Greinke. He was dominant, showing glimpes of his dominance last year in Los Angeles. He went seven innings, allowing the two earned runs on just five hits. He struck out ten, while walking two. He even his record at (5-5) while lowering his ERA to 3.51. He leads the National League with 95 strikeouts and has issued just 10 walks.

Arizona (36-20) will now take their National League best record to Wrigley Field for a big three game weekend series with the National League Central leading Chicago Cubs (33-21).

                    Game #58

                    ARIZONA 8, CHICAGO 6

Yasmany Tomas unloads on a Jake Arrietta hanging curveball.

                    6/4/16
Chicago, IL (AP) – The Arizona Diamondbacks bounced back from Friday's loss, but once again had to hang on for an 8-6 victory over the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field. Yasmany Tomas was a triple shy of the cycle, driving in three to lead the first place DBacks to the victory.

The Cubs grabbed a first inning lead off of Shelby Miller as Kris Bryant lined a two out single to center to score Addison Russell.

Yasmany Tomas got the DBacks off to a good start, slamming a hanging curveball from Jake Arrietta over the left field wall in the second. The two-run blast put Arizona up 2-1.

It would stay 2-1 all the way into the sixth. Jean Segura led off with a double to left and Paul Goldschmidt hit a laser to center, forcing Segura to hold at third. David Peralta then hit an Arrietta mistake into the basket in center to make it 5-1 Arizona. The three run shot tied Peralta with Goldschmidt for the National League home run lead with 18.

Travis Wood came on in relief of Arrietta in the seventh and immediately got into trouble, loading the bases with no outs. Davis Peralta grounded into a fielder's choice, scoring A.J. Pollock to put the DBacks up 6-1. Back-to-back RBI doubles from Jake Lamb and Yasmany Tomas made it 8-1.

But this Cubs team would not go away and Chip Hale may have stuck with Shelby Miller too long. Jorge Solar singled and Dexter Fowler doubled with one out to set the Cubs up. Ben Zobrist reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Solar. Miguel Montero hit a sacrifice fly to score Fowler to cut the lead to 8-3.

Kyle Schwarber would hit a two-run home run to right to cut the lead to 8-5. Jason Heyward followed that with a long home run to right-center to cut the lead to two. Archie Bradley came on in relief to record the final out. Bradley would pitch a perfect eighth.

Tyler Clippard came on in the ninth and picked up his second save on the season as the DBacks held on 8-6.

The series concludes on Sunday night with an ESPN game at 8pm. Robbie Ray (5-1, 2.55) will face Jon Lester (4-5, 2.99).

                      CHICAGO 4, ARIZONA 3

Addison Russell cleared the bases in the fourth.

                      6/5/16
Chicago, IL (AP) – The Chicago Cubs won the rubber match of their three game weekend series, 4-3 over the Arizona Diamondbacks at Wrigley Field on Sunday night. Addison Russell keyed the victory with a bases clearing double in the fourth inning, going 2 for 3 with two doubles and three RBIs.

David Peralta got the DBacks on the board in the top of the fourth, hitting a solo home run to right.

Chicago responded immediately in the bottom half of the inning. Addison Russell hit a two-out double with the bases loaded, scoring all three to put the Cubs up 3-1.

Paul Goldschmidt, the National League RBI leader, came through for the DBacks in the top of the sixth. He singled home Chris Owings, who had singled and reached second when A.J. Pollock was hit by a pitch.

Randall Delgado came on in relief of Robbie Ray in the seventh, and once again served up a long ball. This time it was red-hot Jason Heyward, who homered to dead center. It was his third home run of the weekend series.

David Peralta would hit his second home run of the game, and National League leading 20th on the season, in the top of the ninth off of Cubs closer Hector Rondon. But Rondon would get the final three outs to earn his 16th save as the Cubs won the series.

Arizona ends the road trip at (3-2) and will now return home for a nine game homestand against Tampa Bay, Miami and the Dodgers.

Phoenix, AZ (AP) – Evan Longoria drove in all four Tampa Bay runs in a 4-1 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field on Monday evening. The third baseman hit a three run home run in the first off of Rubby De La Rosa, then added an RBI double in the third to provide all of the Rays offense.

Tampa Bay (26-31) has struggled in 2016, but Monday night they leaned on Longoria to muscle out a 4-1 victory. They also got a great pitching performance from starter Jake Odorizzi, who went 7 2/3 innings, allowing just the one earned run and scattering eight hits. Steve Geltz worked them out of an eighth inning jam, and Danny Farquhar earned his 15th save as he pitched the ninth.

Rubby De La Rosa was the hard luck loser. He lost for the first time in 2016, but pitched pretty well after making that mistake to Longoria in the first. He went seven innings, allowing the four earned runs on eight hits. He struck out 10, while walking none.

Jake Lamb accounted for the lone DBacks run. He hit a long solo home run to right in the fourth and topped it off with a monster bat flip.

The series resumes on Tuesday evening with Drew Smyly (7-4, 2.59) facing Zack Greinke (5-5, 3.51).

Daniel Hudson nailed down his sixth save with a perfect ninth inning.

Phoenix, AZ (AP) – The Arizona Diamondbacks bounced back to take game two of their three game midweek series with the Tampa Bay Rays, 5-3 at Chase Field on Tuesday evening. Jean Segura keyed the victory with a big two-run home run in the fifth off of Drew Smyly.

Tampa Bay made Dbacks ace Zack Greinke work in the first inning. They made him throw 34 pitches, but managed to score just two runs. Kevin Kiermaier led off the game with an 11 pitch at bat, then tripled to right. Logan Forsythe followed with a ten pitch at bat before he singled home Kiermaier. Corey Dickerson then doubled home Forsythe before Greinke recorded an out.

But Tampa's bats went cold after that. Greinke would not allow another hit until the fifth.

Meanwhile, Arizona got to Drew Smyly in the second. David Peralta led off with a single to right and Chris Owings reached on an error by third baseman Evan Longoria. Phil Gosselin then laced a ground-rule double into the DBacks bullpen to cut the lead in half. Welington Castillo singled home both Owings and Gosselin to put Arizona up 3-2.

In the fifth, Zack Greinke walked to open the inning, then Jean Segura hit a laser into the left field seats to make it 5-2.

Tampa Bay would add a run in the seventh after Hank Conger reached on a two out single. He advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a Brad Miller single.

Tyler Clippard pitched the eighth and new closer Daniel Hudson was perfect in the ninth to earn his sixth save.

The series concludes tomorrow afternoon with Erasmo Ramirez (2-6, 4.38) facing Patrick Corbin (5-4, 3.57).

Patrick Corbin was excellent on Wednesday afternoon.

Phoenix, AZ (AP) – The Arizona Diamondbacks won the rubber match of their three game midweek series with the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday afternoon, 3-0 at Chase Field. Patrick Corbin tossed an seven-hit complete game shutout for the first place Diamondbacks.

Arizona (39-23) would get all the offense that they would need in the first inning off of the bat of Paul Goldschmidt. He hit a two-run home run off of Erasmo Ramirez to put the DBacks up 2-0. They would extend that lead to 3-0 in the third on a Brandon Guyer two-base error on a David Peralta fly ball to left. That allowed Paul Goldschmidt to score. He doubled to open the inning.

The story in this one was Patrick Corbin. He tossed a complete game, scattering seven hits and throwing just 88 pitches. He struck out six and walked one in picking up his sixth win.

Arizona has the day off tomorrow before Miami comes to town for a three game weekend series beginning Friday evening.
