    Game #80

    ARIZONA 1, PHILADELPHIA 0

Rubby De La Rosa pitched eight shutout innings to pick up the win.

    6/28/16
Phoenix, AZ (AP) – The Arizona Diamondbacks bats have cooled off after a very hot start in April and May. But on Tuesday evening it was the pitching of Rubby De La Rosa that helped them past the listless Philadelphia Phillies 1-0 at Chase Field.

David Peralta steals second and advances to third on a wild pitch on the same play.
De La Rosa (7-2) pitched eight innings, allowing just four singles, while striking out seven and walking none. Daniel Hudson was perfect in the ninth, picking up his 12th save.

Arizona (52-28) got the only run of the game in the bottom of the seventh. David Peralta singled to open the inning off of Phillies starter Charlie Morton. He then stole second and advanced to third on the same play as Morton threw a wild pitch. He would score on a sacrifice fly by Jake Lamb.

Morton (3-7) was the hard luck loser for the Phillies. He picthed seven strong innings, allowing just the one run and just four hits. He struck out four and walked just one.

The series will wrap on Wednesday afternoon at Chase Field with Jerad Eickhoff (4-5, 4.10) going up against DBacks ace Zack Greinke (7-6, 3.45).

      Game #81

      PHILADELPHIA 5, ARIZONA 3

Nick Williams hit his first career home run, a game winner.

      6/29/16
Phoenix, AZ (AP) – The Philadelphia Phillies avoided a season sweep on Wednesday afternoon, rallying with five eighth inning runs, to defeat the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-3 at Chase Field. Rookie Nick Williams went 3 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs to help the last place Phillies to the win.

Jake Lamb hit two home runs for the DBacks, but it was not enough in the loss.
Zack Greinke (7-7) was dominant through the first seven innings. He allowed just two hits, but manager Skip Hale may have stuck with his ace a bit too long on Wednesday afternoon.

Arizona led 2-0 in the eighth, and David Lough singled to center to open the inning. Cendric Hunter then got a ball through the infield for another single. Freddy Galvis then reached on a Greinke mental error as Galvis bunted and Greinke tried going to second and everyone was safe.

Hale then brought in his setup man, Tyler Clippard. He got Andres Blanco to fly out to center, scoring Lough. Cody Asche then lined a double to center, scoring Cendric Hunter to tie the game at 2-2. Cesar Hernandez then hit another sacrifice fly to put the Phillies up 3-2.

Clippard then hung a slider that rookie Nick Williams hit into the left field seats to make it 5-3. the normally reliable Clippard picked up a blown save, his third on the season. To be fair, he came in with the bases loaded and none out.

Arizona (52-29) got a couple of solo home runs from Jake Lamb, his ninth and tenth on the season. Lost in the big eighth inning from the Phillies, was the fact that the Diamondbacks had two runners thrown out at the plate early on. Chris Owings got thrown out at the plate in the first on a Chris Owings single to center. In the second, Zack Greinke lined one to the gap in right-center, but Drury got thrown out trying to score from first.

The loss allowed the Giants to move to within three games of the first-place Diamondbacks with the Giants coming to town for a big three game weekend series starting on Friday night.

              ARIZONA 4, SAN FRANCISCO 2

Patrick Corbin helped the DBacks take game one of this crucial series.

              7/1/16
Phoenix, AZ (AP) – The Arizona Diamondbacks continue to dominate thier division rivals in 2016. On Friday night, Patrick Corbin pitched the DBacks to a 4-2 victory over the San Francisco Giants to open a crucial three game weekend series at Chase Field.

Welington Castillo smashed a big three-run home run in the fourth inning to help pace the DBacks.
This Diamondbacks club can play small ball, as well as long ball, and that has helped them to the lead in the National League West. On Friday night, they used both to edge the rival Giants.

Socrates Brito singled to open the second. He stole second and advanced to third on a Patrick Corbin groundout. He then scored on a Jean Segura sacrifice fly to make it 1-0.

Welington Castillo then went deep in the fourth, a three-run blast, to make it 3-0. Paul Goldschmidt and David Peralta scored on the play. Goldschmidt singled to open the inning and Peralta walked. Goldy is mired in a slump, hitting just (.167) over his last ten ball games.

Patrick Corbin (9-4) was masterful. We went 7 1/3 innings, allowing two runs in the eighth before being lifted for Nick Vincent. Corbin allowed eight hits and two runs. He struck out eight and walked none.

The Giants broke the shut out in the eighth. Kelby Tomlinson lined a one-out single and Denard Span homered to right to cut the DBacks lead to 4-2. Nick Vincent came on to get the DBacks out of the eighth.

Tim Hudson was perfect in the ninth, earning his 13th save. The win moved the Diamondbacks four games ahead of the Giants in the N.L. West.

The series resumes on Saturday evening with Jeff Samardzija (7-3, 2.33) going up against Shelby Miller (7-5, 2.69).

                          ARIZONA 7, SAN DIEGO 5

David Peralta lines a triple to left.

Phoenix, AZ (AP) – The red-hot Arizona Diamondbacks are now rolling. On Tuesday evening they won their fifth straight as they rallied late for a 7-5 over the San Diego Padres at Chase Field.

Jean Segura stole three bases in the victory.
The Diamondbacks (57-29) are an incredible 28 games over .500 and now have a six game lead in the National League West as the All-Star break approaches. This is beyond anyone's wildest expectations as this team was picked to finish fourth in the National League West in 2016.

Arizona got off to a good start against Colin Rae in this one. Chris Owings tripled to center in the first and score on a Paul Goldschmidt sacrifice fly. It was Goldschmidt's league leading 67th RBI on the year.

In the second, Phil Gosselin hit a laser into the left field seats. The two-run shot put Arizona up 3-0.

Brett Wallace would get one back for the Padres in the top of the third as he homered to right. But Arizona responded in the bottom half. Jean Segura singled to left to open the inning. He stole second and reached third on a wild pitch. He would then score on another wild pitch to make it 4-1.

Zack Greinke wasn't cruising in this one though. He walked Alexei Ramirez to open the fourth. Derek Norris then doubled home Ramirez. Alexi Amarista singled home Norris to cut the DBacks lead to 4-3.

In the sixth, the Padres would tie it up as Alexei Ramirez homered to left to open the inning.

Arizona would go ahead for good in the bottom of the seventh. Ketel Marte singled to right to open the inning. He stole second and score on a Yasmany Tomas double. Chris Owinsg would hit a sacrifice fly to score Tomas. David Peralta would then make it 7-4 as he tripled to left, scoring Jean Segura.

San Diego (47-37) would get one back in the ninth off of closer Daniel Hudson, but they fell nine games back in the National League West with the loss.

Zack Greinke got the no decision for Arizona, going six innings and allowing four runs on seven hits. He struck out seven and walked one. Nick Vincent earned the win, pitching the seventh.

Nick Ahmed left the game with an arm injury in the fifth. He injured it diving for a ground ball. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list after the game and Rickie Weeks was recalled from Double-A Mobile.

The series wraps on Wednesday evening with Robbie Erlin (5-6, 3.45) going up against Patrick Corbin (9-4, 2.98).

Phoenix, AZ (AP) – The Arizona Diamondbacks finished a nine game homestand on Wednesday afternoon with a six straight win, this one 3-2 over the San Diego Padres at Chase Field. Patrick Corbin picked up his 10th win, opening with six hitless innings.

David Peralta broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the sixth, doubling home Chris Owings to give Arizona a 1-0 lead.

Patrick Corbin's no hit bid was broken up in the top of the seventh as Cory Spangenberg singled to right. Matt Kemp followed that with a double into th eright-centerfield gap. David Peralta hit cutoff Ketel Marte, who threw a strike to Welington Castillo to gun down Spangenberg at the plate to keep it 1-0.

Corbin then hit Wil Myers with a pitch. Derek Norris would line a single to center, scoring Kemp to tie the game. Corbin would get Alexei Ramirez to bounce into a 4-6-3 double play to get out of the inning.

Ketel Marte hit a one-out solo home run deep into the left field seats to put Arizona back in front in the bottom of the seventh. Jean Segura would draw a walk and he stole second, his 30th stolen base on the season. Chris Owings would double him home to make it 3-1.

That second run in the bottom of the seventh was big as Alexi Amarista hit the first pitch that he saw from reliever Nick Vincent into the right field seats to cut the lead to 3-2.

In the ninth, Tyler Clippard came on and worked himself into trouble. He walked Cory Spangenberg, struck out Matt Kemp and gave up a single to Wil Myers. Daniel Hudson came in and shut the door. He got Derek Norris to fly out to center and Alexei Ramirez to pop out to short to end the game.

The win ended an (8-1) homestand for the Diamondbacks. They will now head to San Francisco to end the first half of the baseball season with a seven game lead on the Giants.
