        Game #47

        PITTSBURGH 6, ARIZONA 3

Jordy Mercer hitting one of his two home runs.

        5/24/16
Pittsburgh, PA (AP) – The suddenly red-hot Pittsburgh Pirates continued their winning ways on Tuesday evening as they rallied from an early deficit to defeat the Arizona Diamondbacks 6-3 at PNC Park in downtown Pittsburgh. Shortstop Jordy Mercer led the Bucs, hitting two home runs and driving in three.

Pittsburgh (19-27) has now won nine of 11 after a disastrous start to the 2016 season.

Paul Goldschmidt got the Snakes off to a quick start blasting a long home run deep into the left center field seats. The two-run shot was measured at 454 feet and was his 12th on the year, tying him with David Peralta for the team lead and placing him second in the National League. The DBacks would leave the bases loaded though and that would come back to haunt them later.

Francisco Cervelli would get the Bucs on the board in the bottom of the second. He lined a single to center, scoring Starting Marte, who had opened the inning with a triple.

The Pirates would tie it up in the bottom of the third as Andrew McCutchen doubled home Josh Harrison with two outs. They would take the lead in the fourth on Jordy Mercer's first home run of the game, a two-run shot to left off of Patrick Corbin.

Arizona (30-17) would get one back in the sixth as Yasmany Tomas singled home David Peralta, who led off the inning with a double off of the wall in right.

Randall Delgado came on in relief of Patrick Corbin in the seventh and his struggles continued. He gave up back-to-back solo home runs to Jordy Mercer and David Freese as the Bucs padded their lead to 6-3. Delgado has been awful as of late, giving up long balls with alarming frequency after starting the season as the DBacks most dependable reliever.

The series resumes on Wednesday evening with Shelby Miller (4-1, 2.08) facing Francisco Liriano (2-5, 3.48).

          Game #48

          PITTSBURGH 3, ARIZONA 2

Andrew McCutchen ripped a two-run single in the third.

          5/25/16
Pittsburgh, PA (AP) – The Pittsburgh Pirates ran their winning streak to four on Wednesday evening as they held on for a 3-2 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks at PNC Park. Andrew McCutchen hit a two-run single in the third that proved to be the difference for the Pirates.

Pittsburgh (20-27) would score all three of their runs in the third. Josh Harrison singled home Francisco Liriano, and Andrew McCutchen hit a two-out, two-run single to put the Pirates up 3-0.

David Peralta led off the top of the fourth with a solo home run to dead center to get Arizona on the board.

They would have a great chance to tie it up in the ninth off of Pirates closer Mark Melancon. They loaded the bases with no outs on a Yasmany Tomas walk, Nick Ahmed single and pinch hitter Socrates Brito getting hit by a pitch. Brandon Drury then beat out a double play, allowing Tomas to score to make it 3-2. Jean Segura struck out and A.J. Pollock flew out to left to end the game with the tying run on third.

Francisco Liriano (3-5) picked up the win for the Pirates. He went six and 2/3 innings, scattering ten hits, but allowing just one run. He struck out four and did not allow a walk. Shelby Miller (4-2) was the hard luck loser for Arizona. He went six innings, allowing the three runs on six hits. He struck out four and did not walk a batter.

Arizona (30-18) has now lost four of five and has seen their lead in the National League West shrink to three games. The series finale is tomorrow afternoon with Robbie Ray (3-1, 2.82) going up against Jeff Locke (2-3, 4.07).

            Game #49

            ARIZONA 7, PITTSBURGH 3

David Peralta is having a big year for the DBacks.

            5/26/16
Pittsburgh, PA (AP) – The Arizona Diamondbacks salvaged the finale of a three game weekend series on Thursday afternoon, defeating the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-3. David Peralta led the DBacks, going 2 for 4 with a double, home run and three RBIs in the victory.

Arizona got off to a quick start with Oscar Hernandez hitting a two-out, two-run double in the bottom of the first, scoring A.J. Pollock and Paul Goldschmidt. They would extend their lead to 4-0 in the fifth as Jean Segura and Paul Goldschmidt each hitting solo home runs.

David Peralta would make it 7-0 in the top of the seventh, blasting a long three-run home run to right. It was Peralta's 14th on the season.

The Pirates would scrap a few runs across in the seventh and eight, but it wasn't enough as the DBacks ended their three game skid.

Robbie Ray (4-1) picked up the win, going 6 1/3 innings, while scattering nine hits and allowing two earned runs. He struck out seven and did not walk a batter.

Arizona returns home to take on second place San Diego for a three game weekend series.

                  Game #50

                  ARIZONA 6, SAN DIEGO 4

Can you say MVP? Paul Goldschmidt hit two more home runs on Saturday night.

                  5/27/16
Phoenix, AZ (AP) – The Arizona Diamondbacks used the long ball on Friday night to power past the San Diego Padres 6-4 at Chase Field in the opener of a big weekend series between the top two teams in the National League West. The DBacks hit five home runs, accounting for all six of their runs in the victory.

Paul Goldschmidt got the homer parade started in the bottom of the first, launching a solo shot just over the pool in right.

Brett Wallace would tie it in the top of the fifth with a solo shot to right off of Rubby De La Rosa. Chris Owings responded in the bottom of the inning, hitting a solo shot to center off of Robbie Erlin.

The Padres would tie it up in the top of the sixth. Melvin Upton Jr led off with a ground rule double to right. He advanced to third on a Robbie Erlin sacrifice bunt. John Jay then lined a double to left to drive in Upton Jr.

San Diego would grab the lead in the eighth as manager Chip Hale may have stuck with Rubby De La Rosa just a bit too long. He gave up singles to Cory Spangenburg and pinch hitter Wil Myers to open the inning. Tyler Clippard came in and gave up a line drive RBI single to Christian Bethancourt, before working out of the jam.

The DBacks responded in a big way in the bottom of the eighth. Chris Herrmann led off the bottom of the eighth with a pinch hit ground rule double. Jean Segura then bunted him over to third. A.J. Pollock would pop out and Padres manager Andy Green decided that they would pitch to Paul Goldschmidt. Big mistake. Goldschmidt turned on a 2-0 slider from Kevin Quackenbush and blasted it deep into the picnic area in center field to put Arizona up 4-3. #Goldschmidthappens

Carlos Villanueva came on in relief, but provided none. He gave up back-to-back home runs to David Peralta and Yasmany Tomas to make it 6-3.

Brad Zeigler came on in the ninth to nail it down, but he didn't last long. He gave up a double to Brett Wallace and an RBI single to Yangervis Solarte, then was yanked for Daniel Hudson. Husdon struck out Derek Norris and Alexi Amarista, then got Wil Myers to fly out to the warning track in left to help Arizona hold on to the victory.

Paul Goldschmidt went 3 for 3 with two home runs and three RBIs. He now in the National League triple crown leader in average (.386), home runs (15), and RBI (46).

The series resumes on Saturday night in a nationally televised game with Colin Rea (6-3, 3.79) facing Zack Greinke (4-5, 3.74).

Notes: Closer Brad Zeigler was optioned to Triple-A Reno after the game. Zeigler was struggling in 2016. He had nine saves, but was (0-2) with an ERA of 6.88 and a WHIP of 1.71. Jake Barrett has been called up to take his roster spot. He was (0-1) with an ERA of 1.98 in 27.1 innings in Reno.

                    SAN DIEGO 3, ARIZONA 2 (10)

John John hit the game winning solo home run in the top of the tenth.

                    5/28/16
Phoenix, AZ (AP) – The San Diego Padres evened a big three game weekend series at Chase Field with a big 3-2 extra inning victory over the first place Arizona Diamondbacks. John Jay's solo home run to lead off the tenth proved to be the difference.

Matt Kemp got the Padres on the board in the fourth as he hit a solo home run to dead center field that hit just below the scoreboard. They woud extend their lead to 2-0 in the seventh as pitcher Colin Rae lined a two-out single to center that scored Yangervis Solarte.

Arizona would equalize in the bottom of the eighth. Nick Ahmed and Yasmany Tomas opened with back-to-back singles, chasing starter Colin Rae. A.J. Pollock sacrificed himself to move the runners over off of reliever Drew Pomeranz. Jean Segura then doubled to left center scoring both runners to tie it up at 2-2. Paul Goldschmidt was intentionally walked. Then Pomeranz got David Peralta to pop out and struck out pinch hitter Phil Gosselin to work out of the jam.

After a scoreless ninth, John Jay greeted new Arizona closer Daniel Hudson with amoon shot high into the Padres bullpen to put San Diego up 3-2 in the top of the tenth. Fernando Rodney came on in the bottom of the tenth and sent down the DBacks in order to pick up his 16th save.

Zack Greinke and Colin Rae both pitched well, but picked up no decisions.

The series wraps on Sunday afternoon in the rubber match with Tyson Ross (4-4, 3.00) facing Patrick Corbin (4-4, 3.61).

David Peralta hit a big three-run bomb in the bottom of the eighth.

                      5/29/16
Phoenix, AZ (AP) – The Arizona Diamondbacks used a late rally to take the rubber match of their big three game weekend series with the San Diego Padres, 5-2 on Sunday afternoon at Chase Field. David Peralta broke a 2-2 tie in the eighth with a big three-run home run to lead the first place Diamondbacks.

San Diego (28-23) grabbed the lead in the first inning as Matt Kemp hit a long home run to right, his second in two days, off of Patrick Corbin to give the Padres a 1-0 lead. They would extend their lead to 2-0 in the third as Cory Spangenberg lined a single to center, scoring Alexei Ramirez.

Tyson Ross had it working for the Padres. He started out blanking the DBacks through six innings before allowing a solo home run to Jake Lamb to open the seventh.

In the eighth, Ross got pinch hitter Socrates Brito to bounce out. A.J. Pollock followed with a single to left, chasing Ross from the game. Kevin Quackenbush came on in relief. Jean Segura lined the first pitch from Quackenbush into the right centerfield alley, scoring Pollock to tie the game.

Brad Hand came in to face Paul Goldschmidt, who hit a laser single to right, forcing Segura to stop at third. David Peralta then smashed a hanging slider deep into the right field bleachers to put the DBacks up 5-2.

Tim Hudson pitched the ninth to pick up his fourth save. Patrick Corbin (5-4) went eight strong innings, allowing just the two earned runs on seven hits. He struck out eight, while walking none.

The Diamondbacks (33-19) will now host the American League West leading Houston Astros in a quick two game series on Memorial Day and Tuesday afternoon at Chase Field, then head to Houston for two games.

                            HOUSTON 1, ARIZONA 0

Baseball is a game of inches.

                            5/30/16
Phoenix, AZ (AP) – The Houston Astros got a masterful pitching performance from Collin McHugh as they took the opener of their quick two game series 1-0 over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday's Memorial Day matinee at Chase Field. McHugh went eight plus innings, allowing just two hits.

Houston (31-21) took the lead in the fourth as Colby Rasmus doubled home George Springer, who tripled with two outs. Rasmus lined his double, that landed just fair, into the right field corner.

That lone run would hold up, and made Shelby Miller the tough luck loser. Miller (4-3) went 7 1/3 innings, allowing the lone run on six hits. He struck out eight and walked just one.

Arizona (33-20) would have a chance in the ninth. Socrates Brito led off with a pinch hit bunt single. He advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from A.J. Pollock. Then advanced to third on a wild pitch from reliever Luke Gregerson. Jean Segura bounced out to short with a drawn in infield, holding Brito at third. A.J. Hinch then decided to pitch to Paul Goldschmidt.

Goldschmidt lined a foul ball deep into the Astros bullpen. But lined out to short to end the game.

Collin McHugh (5-3) went eight plus innings, allowing just the two hits, while striking out three and walking just one. Paul Goldschmidt went 0 for 4 to end his eight game hitting streak.

The short series ends on Tuesday afternoon with Mike Fiers (3-3, 3.00) facing Robbie Ray (4-1, 2.82).

Phoenix, AZ (AP) – The Arizona Diamondbacks salvaged the finale of a quick two-game series on Tuesday afternoon with a 5-1 victory over the Houston Astros at Chase Field. Robbie Ray went the distance, allowing just one run to pick up his fifth win of the season.

Arizona (34-20) would grab the lead in the second inning on an A.J. Pollock RBI double. Socrates Brito would follow that up with an RBI single, scoring Pollock to make it 2-0.

The DBacks would add three more in the fifth. Welington Castillo hit a two run home run to left off of Mike Fiers. Chris Owings would add an RBI single, scoring Yasmany Tomas. All the runs came with two outs.

Meanwhile, Robbie Ray was cruising. After allowing two first inning hits, he retired 19 straight until Evan Gattis hit a solo home run to left in the seventh for Houston's only run.

Ray (5-1) allowed just four hits, while striking out eight and walking one.

The two teams will now head to Houston for another two game interleague series.
