    Game #37

    ARIZONA 3, SAN FRANCISCO 2

Patrick Corbin pitched eight and 1/3 strong innings on Thursday evening.

    5/12/16
Phoenix, AZ (AP) – The Arizona Diamondbacks held on for a thrilling 3-2 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Thursday evening in a battle for first place in the National League West at Chase Field. The Giants scored twice in the top of the ninth, then stranded the bases loaded as Arizona escaped to move two games up in the West.

The Diamondbacks grabbed an early lead on Johnny Cueto in the second. Chris Herrmann hit a two-out single back up the middle, then reached second on a Ceuto wild pitch. He would score on a Nick Ahmed single to right.

Arizona had a chance to extend their lead in the fifth, but Patrick Corbin got thrown out at the plate, tagging up on a deep A.J. Pollock fly ball.

The DBacks would add to their lead in the sixth. Phil Gosselin doubled home Yasmany Tomas. Then Chris Herrmann singled home Gosselin to make it 3-0. They would have a chance to extend it to four in the eighth, but David Peralta got thrown out at the plate trying to score on a foul out to right.

The Giants would make it interesting in the ninth. Joe Panik singled to left to open the ninth and Angel Pagan singled to center. Buster Posey would fly out to left, ending Patrick Corbin's night. Tim Hudson came on and gave up an RBI single to Hunter Pence. He struck out out Brandon Crawford, then walked Matt Duffy to load the bases.

Andrew Chafin came in to face Brandon Belt, then hit him with a pitch with the count 0-2, to force in a second Giants run, cutting the lead to 3-2. He then got Gregor Blanco to fly out to deep left to end the game, and move the DBacks two up on the Giants and Dodgers in the West.

The series resumes on Friday night with Jeff Samardzija (3-0, 2.03) facing Shelby Miller (2-1, 1.85).

      Game #38

      ARIZONA 4, SAN FRANCISCO 3

David Peralta unloads on a Jeff Samardzija fastball in the first inning.

      5/13/16
Phoenix, AZ (AP) – The Arizona Diamondbacks once again tiptoed out of a ninth inning jam to hold on for a 4-3 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Friday night at Chase Field. The win stretched the Diamondbacks lead to two games in the N.L. West over the Giants.

David Peralta got the DBacks off to a great start. After Jeff Samardzija walked Yasmany Tomas with two outs in the first, David Peralta blasted a two run home run over the wall in right to give Arizona a 2-0 lead.

Shelby Miller (3-1) pitched well for the Diamondbacks. He carried a shutout into the seventh before the Giants would get one back. Brandon Belt hit a one out single back up the middle, then reached second on a wild pitch. He would score an a Gregor Blanco line drive single to right that a diving David Peralta could not come up with. Miller went seven innings, allowing the one run on six hits. He struck out five and walked one.

Arizona would get two huge insurance runs in the bottom half of the seventh. Paul Goldschmidt hit a bases loaded sacrifice fly to center, scoring Oscar Hernandez. Socrates Brito then singled to right, scoring Chris Herrmann, but Phil Gosselin was thrown out at the plate to end the inning.

In the ninth, Brad Zeigler came in and got two quick outs before walking Brandon Belt and Matt Duffy. Gregor Blanco then doubled to left center, scoring both walked runners to cut the lead to 4-3. Zeigler then got Kelby Tomlinson to fly out weakly to left to end it and earn his eighth save.

The series continues on Saturday evening with Jake Peavy (2-4, 3.30) going up against Robbie Ray (2-0, 1.99). First pitch is scheduled for 5:10 PM.

        Game #39

        ARIZONA 5, SAN FRANCISCO 2

Robbie Ray come up with another quality start for the DBacks.

        5/14/16
Phoenix, AZ (AP) – The Arizona Diamondbacks ran their winning streak to five and saw their lead in the National League West bloom to three games on Saturday evening with a 5-2 victory over the San Francisco Giants. Robbie Ray struck out nine as he tossed seven strong innings to improve to (3-0).

The Diamondbacks would get off to a quick start against Jake Peavy, hitting three first inning doubles and scoring three runs. Chris Owings, David Peralta and Phil Gosselin all hit RBI doubles in a high stress first inning for Peavy.

But his teammates picked him up in the top of the second. Hunter Pence and Brandon Crawford led off the innings by hitting solo bombs to dead center field to pull the Giants to within 3-2.

That would be the only speed bump in Robbie Ray's night. He went seven innings, allowing just the two solo home runs and scattering three other hits. He struck out nine and did not issue a walk.

Arizona (26-13) would add a couple of big insurance rans in the seventh as Paul Goldschmidt hit a bases loaded two-run single to left center. He was thrown out (8-3-6) trying to advance behind the play, to end the inning.

Brad Zeigler came on again in the ninth and this time was better. He gave up a two out single, but picked up his ninth save without allowing a run.

Arizona will go for the four game sweep on Sunday afternoon with Chris Heston (3-2, 1.63) going up against Rubby De La Rosa (3-0, 3.21).

          Game #40

          ARIZONA 4, SAN FRANCISCO 3 (10)

A.J. Pollock deposited the first pitch of the 10th into the seats in left.

          5/15/16
Phoenix, AZ (AP) – The Arizona Diamondbacks completed a four game sweep of rival San Francisco on Sunday afternoon in dramatic fashion with a 4-3 walk-off victory. A.J. Pollock hit a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the tenth as Arizona ran their winning streak to a season high six games.

The Giants (22-18) got off to a quick start in this one, scoring single runs in the first three innings to take a 3-0 lead. Hunter Pence hit a solo home run to left in the first. Trevor Brown hit an RBI single to left in the second, and Brandon Belt hit a long home run to left in the third off of Rubby De La Rosa.

Arizona (27-13) would squander chances early on, leaving a runner on third in the first and the bases loaded in the second. But they broke through in the third. Paul Goldschmidt hit an RBI double down into the right field corner to score A.J. Pollock. Yasmany Tomas then lasered a single to center, scoring Chris Owings, but Paul Goldschmidt got gunned down at the plate to keep the Giants in front 3-2. Tomas would steal second and score on a Brandon Drury single to center to tie the game up.

Both starters would settle down and both left the game with the score tied at 3-3. The DBacks turned to Andrew Chafin to pitch the seventh, and Archie Bradley pitched the eighth and ninth. Daniel Hudson was then sent out in the tenth to shut down the Giants. Manager Chip Hale said afterwards that Hudson may move into the closer role if Zeigler continues to struggle.

In the bottom of the tenth, A.J. Pollock saw just one pitch and blasted it deep into the left field bleachers to send the crowd of over 40,000 home happy, and move the Diamondbacks four games clear of San Diego in the National League West at the quarter pole.

The Diamondbacks will next host the New York Yankees for a three game series beginning Monday night to close out their seven game home stand. The Yankees (18-19) will send Luis Severino (3-1, 4.07) to the bump to go up against Zack Greinke (3-4, 3.42).

                Game #41

                ARIZONA 7, NEW YORK 6

Daniel Hudson watches Yasmany Tomas pull in the game ending fly ball just in front of the wall.

                5/16/16
Phoenix, AZ (AP) – The Arizona Diamondbacks remained red-hot on Monday night, winning their seventh straight, as they held on for a 7-6 victory over the New York Yankees in interleague action at Chase Field. Jean Segura's sacrifice fly in the bottom of teh seventh proved to be the game winner as Arizona stretched it's lead in the N.L. West to five games.

The Bronx Bombers lived up to their nickname in this one, hitting three home runs. The first two were second inning solo home runs off of Zack Greinke. Mark Tiexeira and Starlin Castro each hit homers to left as the Yankees built a 2-0 lead.

The DBacks would get one back in the bottom of the second as Phil Gosselin laced an RBI double to right center, scoring David Peralta.

Arizona (28-13) would take the lead in the third. Paul Goldschmidt hit a two-run home run deep into the left field seats. It was his 11th on the year and gave the DBacks a 3-2 lead. David Peralta followed that up with a solo shot to right, also his 11th on the season.

Paul Goldschmidt added a third RBI in the fifth, grounding a two-out single back up the middle, scoring Zack Greinke to put Arizona up 5-2.

The Yankees would get one back in the top of the seventh as pinch hitter Dustin Ackley beat out a double play ball, allowing Starlin Castro to score to cut the Arizona lead to 5-3. But once again, the DBacks answered in th ebottom half. Socrates Brito lined an RBI double to center, scoring Nick Ahmed. Brito would then score on a Jean Segura sacrifice fly to right to make it 7-3.

Arizona would need all of those runs though. In the top of the eighth, Randall Delgado come on in relief of Zack Greinke. He has been great so far in 2016, but Monday night he made a mistake to Brian McCann, leaving a fastball up and McCann hammered it into the seats in right. That three run home run cut the DBacks lead to 7-6.

Daniel Hudson came on in the ninth instead of Brad Zeigler, and it got interesting. Brett Gardner singled with two outs, then ARod hit a deep fly ball to left that Yasmany Tomas caught on the track, just in front of the wall. It was Hudson's first save.

Paul Goldschmidt's pursuit of the National League triple crown continued on Monday night. He went 2 for 4 with a home run and drove in three. He is now hitting (.372) leading the National League. He has 38 RBIs which also leads the senior circuit. His 11 home runs are tied for the National League lead with teammate David Peralta and Freddie Freeman of Atlanta.

The series resumes on Tuesday evening with Nathan Eovaldi (3-2, 2.28) facing Patrick Corbin (4-2, 3.44) as the DBacks go for the eighth straight win. The Yankees (18-20) will try to end a six game losing streak.

                  NEW YORK 4, ARIZONA 1

Nathan Eovaldi pitched the Yankees out of a six game losing streak.

                  5/17/16
Phoenix, AZ (AP) – Two streaks came to an end on Tuesday evening. The New York Yankees defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 4-1 at Chase Field to end their six game losing streak, and also end the DBacks seven game winning streak.

Arizona jumped to a 1-0 lead in the first after Jean Segura singled and stole second, then scored on a David Peralta single to center.

That lead would last all the way into the seventh as Patrick Corbin continued to pitch well. BUt Chip Hale may have stuck with him one batter too long. In the seventh, Starlin Castro hit a one out single to left that probably should have ended Corbin's night. But Hale stuck with him and he gave up a double to Nick Swisher. He got Didi Gregorius to ground out, allowing Castro to score to tie the game. He then gave up an RBI double to light hitting Aaron Hicks to give New York a 2-1 lead. Hale went to Dominic Leone out of the bullpen, but the damage was done.

The Yankees would add single runs in the eighth and ninth. In the eighth, Brett Gardner reached on a line drive off of Leone. Carlos Beltran then doubled to left. Gardner would score on a wild pitch to make it 3-1. In the ninth, Didi Gregorius homered into the Yankees bullpen off of Randall Delgado to put the Yankees up by three.

Andrew Miller pitched a perfect ninth to pick up his ninth save.

The rubber match of the three game series is tomorrow evening with C.C. Sabathia (0-4, 5.72) scheduled to face Shelby Miller (3-1, 1.78). Joe Girardi is undecided if Sabathia will start the game. If he does not go, expect Ivan Nova to get the start.

                    ARIZONA 7, NEW YORK 6

Daniel Hudson struck out ARod with the tying run on second.

                    5/18/16
Phoenix, AZ (AP) – The Arizona Diamondbacks defeated the New York Yankees 7-6 on Wednesday evening to win the rubber match of their three game midweek series at Chase Field. The series win was the 11th consecutive for the DBacks after losing their first two of 2016.

This one was a wild one, offensively, with each team putting up crooked numbers in multiple innings. The Yankees opened the scoring in the top of the fourth off of Shelby Miller as Brian McCann hit a two-run opposite field shot into the left field bleachers to give the Yankees a 2-0 lead. They would make it 3-0 two outs later as Didi Gregorius hit his second home run in two days into the Yankee bullpen.

Arizona (29-14) responded in the bottom of the fourth off of Ivan Nova. Phil Gosselin doubled home David Peralta. Chris Herrmann then scored on a wild pitch. Pitcher Shelby Miller tied the game with a two-out RBI single back up the middle.

The DBacks would go in front in the fifth as David Peralta hit a solo home run to dead center. The 438-foot shot was his National League leading 12th on the season. They would extend the lead to 7-3 in the sixth, scoring three times. Jean Segura reached on an infield single with the bases loaded, scoring Chris Owings. Paul Goldschmidt would single up the middle, driving in both Socrates Brito and A.J. Pollack.

The Yankees would rally in the seventh. Jacoby Ellsbury would single home Dustin Ackley, who doubled with one out. Mark Tiexeira would drive a two-run double off the wall in center to cut the lead to 7-6. Andrew Chafin would come in to relive Archie Bradley and he got Brian McCann to fly put to left to end the inning.

Chafin worked the eighth, allowing just a leadoff single to Carlos Beltran. Daniel Hudson came on in the ninth and gave up a one-out single to Brett Gardner. Gardner stole second to make things interesting. But Hudson struck out ARod and got Mark Tiexeira to bounce out to second to end the game. It was Hudson's second save.

Arizona will now hit the road for series in St. Louis and Pittsburgh after an off day tomorrow.

St. Louis, MO (AP) – The red-hot St. Louis Cardinals won their ninth straight game on Friday night with an 8-3 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks at Busch Stadium. Kolten Wong's pinch hit two-run home run in the sixth proved to be the difference in the series opener.

The suddenly surging St. Louis Cardinals kept the momentum rolling on Friday night. Yadier Molina got them started with an RBI single to center in the second. Matt Holliday made it 3-0 in the third, hitting a two-run bomb to left off of Robbie Ray.

Arizona (29-15) would tie it up with two in the fourth and a single run in the fifth. David Peralta tripled home Paul Goldschmidt in the fourth, then scored on a Phil Gosselin RBI single. A Jean Segura RBI single in the fifth would tie the game at 3-3.

Kolten Wong put the Cardinals back in front in the sixth, hitting a pinch hit, two-run home run off of Robbie Ray. They would add three more in the eighth, highlighted by a Matt Adams two-run blast.

The series resumes on Saturday afternoon with Rubby De La Rosa (3-0, 3.44) facing Jaime Garcia (5-3, 3.04).

St. Louis, MO (AP) – The Arizona Diamondbacks ended the St. Louis Cardinals nine game winning streak on Saturday afternoon with a 6-1 victory at Busch Stadium. Rubby De La Rosa pitched a gem to lead the Diamondbacks to the victory.

Arizona (30-15) got off to a quick start in this one off of Cardinals starter Jaime Garcia. Oscar Hernandez singled home A.J. Pollock in the second and Joaquin Arias hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Hernandez, to put the DBacks up 2-0 in the second.

They would double that lead in the third on RBI singles from A.J. Pollock and Oscar Hernandez.

A sacrifice fly from Yasmany Tomas and an RBI single from Joaquin Arias in the fifth made it 6-0.

Rubby De La Rosa (4-0) cruised through seven strong innings, allowing just one earned run and scattering four hits, while striking out five and walking just one.

The rubber match of the series is Sunday afternoon as the DBacks try to win their twelfth consecutive series with Zack Greinke (4-4, 3.47) facing Mike Leake (4-3, 3.79).

Mike Leake tossed a complete game eight hitter.

St. Louis, MO (AP) – The St. Louis Cardinals won the rubber match of their three game weekend series with the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday afternoon 4-0 at Busch Stadium. Mike Leake tossed a complete game eight hitter to help the red-hot Cardinals to the series win.

The Arizona Diamondbacks (30-16) lost their first series since way back on April 10. They had won 11 consecutive series to move them into first place in the National League West, with the best record in the National League.

On Sunday afternoon, they had no answers for Mike Leake. He scattered eight hits over ine strong innings of work, keeping the DBacks hitters off balance and getting some help from his defense. Arizona hit into three double plays in the game to kill rallys.

The Cardinals would get all of the offense that they would need in the game in the first inning as Matt Holliday hit a one-out, three-run home run to left off of Zack Greinke. They would add a single run in the third on a Stephen Piscotty solo home run to left.

Zack Greinke (4-5) has struggled since coming over from the Dodgers. In this one, he lasted just five innings, giving up the four earned runs on the two home runs. He struck out six and walked none.

The DBacks will have Monday off as they travel to Pittsburgh for a three game series with the last place Pirates.
