    JULY 14: MLB ALL-STAR GAME:

AMERICAN LEAGUE 7, NATIONAL LEAGUE 4

    AllStar1_20
Carlos Santana was the MVP with two doubles and a home run.

Los Angeles, CA (AP) – The American League jumped out to an early three run lead and made that stick in the All-Star Game at Dodger Stadium on Tuesday evening in a 7-3 victory over the National League. Carlos Santana was named the game MVP going 3 for 4 with two doubles, a home run and three RBI.

It was Santana that got the American League going with a three run home run off of Patrick Corbin in the second inning. Hunter Dozier would add a three run home run off of Trevor Bauer in the fourth as the American League stretched their lead to 6-1. Dozier went 2 for 4 with the home run and drove in the other four American League runs.

Arizona Diamondback David Peralta hit a solo home run in the second off of winning pitcher Jakob Junis. Peralta went 1 for 3 in the contest. Ketel Marte got the start at second base for the National League and went 0 for 3. Madison Bumgarner pitched one inning in relief and sent down the side in order.

Nolan Arenado would add a two-run home run in the sixth inning, but it was not enough as the American League bullpen would shut down the National League the rest of the way.

The DBacks return to action on Friday evening at home as the start off the second half against the Miami Marlins at Chase Field.

      July 17-19: MIAMI (44-55) @ ARIZONA (52-47)

      July 17: Marlins 4, DBacks 2
      July 18: DBacks 4, Marlins 2
      July 19: DBacks 4, Marlins 3

The DBacks dropped the opener, but rallied to take the last two to win the first series of the second half.

The Miami Marlins took the opener of the second half of the 2020 baseball season as they scored early and held on late for a 4-2 victory over the DBacks at Chase Field. Jesus Aguilar homered in the first in and drove in two runs to help lead the Marlins to their fourth straight win.

An Eduardo Escobar RBI single in the bottom of the first cut the early Marlins lead in half. But they would get two more in the third as Jorge Alfaro and Brian Anderson each lined RBI singles back up the middle to make it 4-1. A Kole Calhoun RBI groundout in the bottom half would score Ketel Marte but the DBacks offense could produce nothing else as they dropped their third straight.

Zac Gallen (8-7) took the loss against his former team, but he wasn’t horrible. He went five innings allowing the four runs on seven hits, but he struck out nine and walked two. The DBacks staff struck out 13 Marlins in the game.

David Peralta went 3 for 4 with two doubles and a run scored to boost his National League leading average up to .338.

Robert Duggar (2-0) earned the win for Miami, going six innings and allowing two runs on just five hits. Stephen Tarpley picked up his 15th save, tight-roping out of the ninth after hitting Eduardo Escobar and giving up a single to Nick Ahmed. He got Ildemaro Vargas to line out in the gap to end the ball game.

Notes: The Padres made a move to beef up their pitching staff as they traded centerfielder Kiki Hernandez and minor league pitcher Mackenzie Gore to the Cardinals in exchange for starter Jack Flaherty. The 24-year-old Flaherty was (8-8) with a 4.27 ERA and 1.24 WHIP with the Cardinals this season. Gore is on the Injured List with a shoulder tear and Hernandez has now been traded twice this season, previously acquired from the Dodgers back in April.

On Saturday evening, the DBacks reversed the script, hitting a couple of home runs and then holding on for a 4-2 victory. Nick Ahmed led the charge with a big two-run home run to key a three-run fourth inning rally.

The Marlins grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the second as All-Star Jorge Alfaro took Luke Weaver deep. It was his 18th on the season.

Ildemaro Vargas got the DBacks on the board in the fourth with a game tying RBI single to center that scored Eduardo Escobar. Nick Ahmed then followed that with a homer to left. Ketel Marte would add a solo home run in the fifth, his 18th on the season to make it 4-1.

The Marlins would get one back in the sixth as Brian Anderson lined a two-out RBI single to left.

The DBacks bullpen would lock it down though. Chaz Roe, Yoan Lopez and Archie Bradley combined for 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief to get Luke Weaver his 8th win on the season. Weaver (8-5) went 5 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on six hits. He struck out one and walked two. Jordan Yamamoto (4-10) took the loss for Miami. He gave up four runs on seven hits in five innings of work.

The DBacks took the finale 4-3 as they tight-roped out of a ninth inning jamb to win the rubber match of the three game weekend series. Archie Bradley struck out the side in the ninth, but gave up two runs and stranded the tying run at second as he earned his 21st save on the season.

Arizona grabbed a 1-0 lead in the opening inning as Eduardo Escobar doubled home David Peralta with two outs. Ketel Marte hit a long solo home run in the third to extend the lead to 2-0. It was his 19th on the year.

Miami would strike in the top of the fourth as Brian Anderson came through with a two-out RBI double off of Mike Leake.

Daulton Varsho continues to impress in 2020 and Sunday afternoon he came through with a big two-out RBI single in the sixth to extend the DBacks lead. Eduardo Escobar then hit a long solo home run to right in the eighth to put the DBacks up by three. That run proved to be huge.

The Marlins took advantage of a Nick Ahmed throwing error as pinch hitter Isan Diaz lined a two-run double with two outs in the ninth to cut the DBacks lead to 4-3. Archie Bradley then struck out Jonathan Villar to end the contest as seal the victory.

Eduardo Escobar went 3 for 4 with a double, home run and two RBI in the victory.

Arizona will now host Minnesota (49-52) for a three game series to end the home stand beginning tomorrow evening at 6:40pm.

Hey BigJ! Glad to jump aboard before you get too far into this. Great to see the D-Backs get back to the .500 mark and better after a tough start to the season. There were a pair of important sweeps to kind of keep you near a respectable record even when you were struggling. I like the Dbacks roster this year, more from a personal preference than "picking them to do X" type thing, just like the personalities.

That trade of Buehler is an interesting one, I like Paddack but don't think that's one they would ever do; Did you have your veto finger hovering over the button on that one? You had indicated I think that you were controlling the various teams. That one may weaken the Dodgers just enough to be their undoing unfortunately.

Those are some eye popping numbers for Peralta, a guy I have always liked and enjoyed to watch play. I could see him putting up those numbers in the PCL, sure, but that is truly astounding for the Bigs for him. I hope he is able to keep it up.

Finally, I really like how you do this dynasty - Maybe it's the standard, I don't know, but it's easily digestible and makes it easy to get a feel for how the team is doing going series by series like that. Good luck to the Dbacks moving forward and I'll be following.

Thanks for checking in! I am having a blast with this game as per usual, especially with no real sports going on with all the craziness in our world at the moment.

I do 30-team control but I try not to interfere with what goes on in the game as far as trades and what not. It is fictional and if it happens, let's see how things play out.

As far as Peralta, he is absolutely raking right handed pitching, hitting over .400 with like 18 HRs. He is one of the main reasons, along with Escobar heating up after a slow start, that we are still in contention in the NL west.

I like the makeup of this team and the good young arms they have coming up. I think that I may finally get in more than one season with one of my dynasties with this one.

          Stay tuned!

            July 20-22: MINNESOTA (49-55) @ ARIZONA (55-47)

            July 20: DBacks 4, Twins 2
            July 21: DBacks 6, Twins 4
            July 22: DBacks 4, Twins 2

The DBacks swept the Twins to run their winning streak to five as they ended the opening home stand of the second half (5-1).

The DBacks took the opener over the Twins 4-2 at Chase Field on Monday evening. Kole Calhoun went 2 for 3 with a double, home run, RBI and two runs scored in the victory.

Calhoun homered in the first inning. The solo shot was his 20th on the campaign.

Minnesota would get that back in the top of the second when Byron Buxton singled home Josh Donaldson.

An RBI single from Ildemaro Vargas gave the DBacks the lead back in the fourth. Starling Marte then singled home Daulton Varsho to extend the lead.

A Josh Donaldson RBI double in the sixth pulled the Twins back to within a run.

Hector Rondon came on in relief of starter Jon Duplantier in the seventh with two on and none out and he worked out of the jamb with the lead intact, striking out Nelson Cruz to end the inning.

Arizona would get an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh on a Nick Ahmed RBI single after Ketel Marte was intentionally walked in front of him.

It was then up to the bullpen to finish off the Twins with Junior Guerra and Andrew Chafin locking it down. Chafin earned his third save on the season. Jon Duplantier (5-4) picked up the win, working six innings and allowing two runs on eight hits.

Jose Berrios (5-12) was saddled with the loss, allowing three runs on six hits in six innings of work.

On Tuesday evening, the DBacks overcame a sub-par performance from Madison Bumgarner to defeat the Twins 6-4 to run their winning streak to four games. Eduardo Escobar went 4 for 4 with three singles and a home run to help lead the way.

Arizona jumped on Kenta Maeta for three runs in the first inning on five base hits. The Twins knocked Madison Bumgarner around but could not seem to score, as they piled up eight base hits through three innings but no runs, leaving the bases loaded twice.

A Joshua Rojas RBI double in the fourth gave the DBacks a 4-0.

The Twins would finally figure out how to score in the fifth and it was with the long ball. Nelson Cruz hit a long two-run home run and Josh Donaldson followed that up with a 450 foot blast to cut the lead to 4-3.

Eduardo Escobar hit a solo home run to left center in the bottom of the fifth, his 23rd on the campaign to give the DBacks some cushion. The Twins would chase MadBum in the top of the sixth and picked up another run on an Ehire Adrianza pinch hit single.

Bumgarner (9-6) went 5 1/3 innings, allowing a season high 13 hits, but just four runs in picking up the win. Junior Guerra, Yoan Lopez and Archie Bradley locked it down on the back end with Bradley picking up his 22nd save.

Notes: The DBacks announced they have comes to terms on contract extensions with Luke Weaver and Nick Ahmed. Weaver agreed to terms on a four year deal worth 22.18M with Ahmed agreeing to terms on a five year deal that will pay him $59M. These are two cornerstone players on a team setup to contend in the National League for the foreseeable future.

In the finale, the DBacks took care of a familiar foe as they defeated Robbie Ray and the Twins 4-2. Zac Gallen improved to (9-7) as he tossed seven innings, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out nine.

Arizona would jump on Robbie Ray for three runs in the first inning. Nick Ahmed hit a two-run home run off of the foul pole in left and Eduardo Escobar followed that up with a home run to dead center.

Jorge Polanco lined a two-out, two-run double in the third to get the Twins back into this one. But Gallen and the DBacks bullpen were solid, not allowing a run over the final six innings. Yoan Lopez worked the eighth, striking out two, and Kevin Ginkel got the call to close this one out. It was his second save on the season.

Arizona will now head out to San Francisco (53-49) for a quick three game weekend series before returning home to take on the Phillies (65-37) and Dodgers (58-45) as we approach the trade deadline.

Forgot to mention, loved the deal getting *anything* for Robbie Ray, looked like he pitched better than normal but you were still able to get the win.

MadBum and Gallen were two players I was looking to acquire on the cheap this year in (now meaningless probably) fantasy drafts, but couldn't get either of them. Gallen has quickly become a huge sleeper and it looks like he's definitely living up to the hype in your chise with that nice and somewhat unique arsenal of his. I think Madbum with his size and overall physicality, the longer he can remain healthy, will gradually get back some of his stuff and be solid, but we'll have to see about that.

Great sweep for the D-Backs! Enjoy the vacay

                      July 24-26: ARIZONA (58-47) @ SAN FRANCISCO (53-51)

                      July 24: DBacks 3, Giants 0
                      July 25: DBacks 7, Giants 3
                      July 26: DBacks 6, Giants 3

The DBacks traveled to Northern California and came away with a sweep of the Giants to run their winning streak to eight games. They have now moved into second place in the National League West and only trail the first-place Dodgers by 1 ½ games.

In the opener, the DBacks stayed red-hot as they shut out the Giants 3-0 to extend their winning streak to six games. Luke Weaver tossed eight shut out innings, allowing three hits while striking out eight in a very briskly paced game.

Christian Walker returned from the Inured List and went 2 for 3 with a triple, home run and two RBI as he picked up right where he left off before his broken wrist. Walker hit a two-run home run in the fourth off of Andrew Suarez to break a scoreless tie. He would then hit a one-out triple in the eighth, scoring on a Daulton Varsho sacrifice fly.

Archie Bradley worked a perfect ninth to pick up his 23rd save on the year.

Notes: Nick Ahmed suffered a pulled hamstring in the game and had to leave. The club placed him on the 10-day Injured List after the game and recalled first baseman Kevin Cron from Triple-A Reno.

On Saturday afternoon it was Eduardo Escobar’s two home runs that propelled the DBacks to a 7-3 victory over the Giants. Escobar went 3 for 4 with a triple, two home runs and three RBI.

Mike Leake (8-4) picked up the victory, working six innings and allowing two runs on eight hits.

The DBacks blew this one open in the fourth, scoring three runs to flip a 2-1 deficit into a 4-2 lead. Eduardo Escobar started it with an RBI triple. Daulton Varsho then doubled home Escobar and Kole Calhoun singled home Varsho.

They would add two more in the seventh on a pinch hit two-run home run from Jake Lamb. Eduardo Escobar then hit his second, and 26th on the season, in the eighth to make it 7-2.

The Giants would get one back in the bottom of the ninth off of reliever Yoan Lopez.

In the finale, the DBacks once again used the long ball as they finished off the sweep of the Giants 6-3 on Sunday afternoon. Ketel Marte and Eduardo Escobar each homered as the DBacks moved past the Rockies and into second place in the West.

The DBacks grabbed a 2-0 lead in the third inning off of Giants ace Brad Keller. David Peralta doubled home Ketel Marte with the first run of the game. Peralta then scored on a Kole Calhoun strikeout as the third strike was dropped, then Giants catcher Rob Brantly fired the ball into right field.

A Ketel Marte solo home run, his 20th, extended the lead in the fifth before Kean Wong lined a two-out, two-run double in the bottom half to get the Giants on the board.

Eduardo Escobar would add a two-run home run in the eighth. It was his third in the series and 27th on the season as the DBacks extended their lead to 5-2. A Starling Marte sacrifice fly would add another run in the ninth as the DBacks cruised to victory.

Jon Duplantier (6-4) picked up the win for Arizona. He pitched six innings, allowing two runs on six hits. Brad Keller (9-4) took the loss for the Giants. He allowed three runs on six hits in five innings of work, striking out five.

Arizona (58-47) now heads home for a big seven game home stand against the division leading Phillies (67-39) and Dodgers (60-46).

                            July 27-29: PHILADELPHIA (68-41) @ ARIZONA (60-48)

                            July 27: DBacks 4, Phillies 2
                            July 28: DBacks 4, Phillies 3
                            July 29: Phillies 7, DBacks 6

The DBacks took two of three from the top team in the National League and moved to within a half game of the first place Dodgers with a huge four game series upcoming.

Arizona continued to stay red-hot as they took the opener 4-2 to run their winning streak to nine games. Kole Calhoun hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth to put the DBacks in front to stay as they opened up a huge seven game home stand.

The Phillies grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second as Andrew McCutchen homered off of Madison Bumgarner. Arizona would get that run right back as Daulton Varsho launched a moon shot deep into the right field bleachers to tie the game at 1-1.

A Bryce Harper RBI double put the Phillies back in front in the top of the sixth inning. But Kole Calhoun responded with a 443 foot shot to dead center with David Peralta on to move Arizona in front 3-2 in the bottom half.

Yoan Lopez and Archie Bradley then closed down the Phillies to seal the win. Bradley picked up hi 24th save on the season. Madison Bumgarner won his tenth game, improving to (10-6). He pitched seven solid innings, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out four.

Zack Wheeler (8-5) took the loss for Philadelphia, going six innings and allowing three runs on five hits. He struck out seven and did not walk a batter.

Trade: With the MLB trade deadline this Friday, the DBacks made a move on Monday evening sending outfielder Jon Jay to the Indians in exchange for outfielder Greg Allen. The switch-hitting 27-year-old Allen was struggling in 2020, hitting just .176 with five RBI in 119 at-bats. Jay was hitting .223 in 103 at-bats for the DBacks in limited action.

It wasn’t easy on Tuesday evening, but the DBacks held off a late Phillies rally to win 4-3 to extend their winning streak to ten games. Zac Gallen picked up his tenth win on the season, tossing seven strong innings as he struck out nine for the second consecutive time.

Arizona grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second as Eduardo Escobar homered to center off of Zach Eflin It was Escobar’s 28th home run on the season.

The game would stay that way until the sixth when Daulton Varsho unloaded on a hanging slider and belted a three-run home run to put the DBacks up 4-0.

The Phillies would get on the board in the eighth as Jean Segura scored on a two-out third strike wild pitch by Chaz Roe.

Archie Bradley came on in the ninth looking for his 25th save, but this one was a struggle. He gave up three straight singles to open the inning. Adam Haslely then hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Andrew McCutchen. Bryce Harper followed with another sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 4-3. Rhys Hoskins drew a walk to move the tying run to second. Bradley would strike out Didi Gregorious to end the game and extend the winning streak to ten games.

Daulton Varsho is moving himself into the Rookie of the Year conversation as he is now hitting .299 with 10 home runs and 30 RBI. He is also making it tough on Torey Lovullo who is currently platooning Varsho and Carson Kelly.

In the finale, the DBacks bullpen struggled, blowing a two run lead in the seventh, then giving up a run in the eighth and one in the ninth as their ten game winning streak came to an end, falling 7-6.

Bryace Harper did the big damage for the Phillies going 2 for 4 with a double, and two-run home run off of Hector Rendon in the seventh that tied the game at 5-5.

After falling behind 3-1, the DBacks scored four times in the fifth inning to take a 5-3 lead. They scored on a Jake Lamb sacrifice fly, a David Peralta RBI ground out, and an Eduardo Escobar two-run double. Escobar continues to be white-hot as he went 3 for 4 with two doubles and two RBI.

The Phillies would tie in on the Harper home run in the seventh. They would take the lead in the eighth on a Roman Quinn two-out, RBI double off of Yoan Lopez.

But these DBacks fought back with Christian Walker coming through with a two-out RBI triple to tie the game in the bottom of the eighth.

Didi Gregorious would come through in the ninth for the Phillies with a huge two-out RBI double that scored Adam Haseley to put the Phillies in front for good, 7-6. Hector Neris came on to close it out and earn his 35th save, second best in the National League.

Luke Weaver left the game in the fourth inning, clutching his throwing arm. He was examined by the team trainer and doctor and had x-rays after the game. It was determined that he had a fracture of his throwing arm and will likely miss 8-12 weeks, which would be a huge blow for the DBacks.

After the game the DBacks recalled Corbin Martin from Triple-A Reno to take Weaver’s spot in the rotation. Martin was (7-5) with an ERA of 2.68 in Reno and an miniscule WHIP of 1.06.

Arizona will now host the Dodgers with first place on the line in the National League West as the DBacks trail by just a half game.

                              DEADLINE DAY

New York, NY (AP) – The Major League Baseball trade deadline was Friday at 3pm, and there were no big deals made. A couple were made in the week leading up to the deadline including the Pirates sending starting pitcher Chris Archer to the AL East leading Yankees in exchange for three less than impressive prospects.

The Marlins sent shortstop Jonathan Villar to Houston in exchange for shortstop Freddie Nova. The Marlins also shipped off first baseman Jesus Aguilar to the Angels in exchange for three prospects.

                                July 30 – Aug 2: LOS ANGELES (63-50) @ ARIZONA (62-50)

                                July 30: DBacks 8, Dodgers 6
                                July 31: Dodgers 5, DBacks 1
                                August 1: DBacks 4, Dodgers 3 (12)
                                August 2: Dodgers 4, DBacks 2

The DBacks split a huge four game series with the Dodgers at Chase Field and remain just a half game out of first place in the National League West.

The DBacks took the opener over the Dodgers 8-6 to take over first place in the National League West for the first time this season. Christian Walker went deep twice and drove in four runs to help pace the DBacks to the victory.

Walker’s two blasts gave Arizona a 4-0 lead off of Clayton Kershaw and it looked like they may cruise to victory. But that was not the case. Will Smith hit a two-run home run off of Mike Leake in the fifth to cut the DBacks lead in half.

Arizona would respond with three in the bottom of the fifth to go up 7-2 David Peralta had a two-run double and Starling Marte singled home Peralta.

But the plucky Dodgers would not go away. Joc Pederson chased Mike Leake after he homered to open the sixth. Jerickson Profar would add a two-run shot off of reliever Chaz Roe to cut the lead to 7-5.

Ketel Marte would tack on a big insurance run in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI single.

Archie Bradley came on in the ninth and once again turned it into an adventure as he loaded the bases with no outs. But he managed to wiggle his way out of it, only allowing a sacrifice fly as he picked up his 26th save.

Mike Leake (9-4) would get the win, going five plus innings and allowing four runs on eight hits. Clayton Kershaw (11-4) took the loss and left the game in the fourth with a hamstring injury. Eduardo Escobar also left the game with an apparent hip injury but his injury did not appear to be serious.

The Dodgers even the important series on Friday night with a workmanlike 5-1 victory over the DBacks. Joc Pederson’s three-run home run keyed a four run fourth inning as the Dodgers moved back into first place on trade deadline day.

Christian Walker plated the only DBacks run with a solo home run in the fifth off of Chris Paddack. It was Walker’s 18th on the season and third in the series.

Chris Paddack (8-6) was on top of his game, working six innings and allowing the one run on just two hits. He struck out four and walked one. The Dodgers bullpen allowed just one base runner over the final three innings.

Jon Duplantier (6-5) took the loss and had to leave the game with one out in the fourth due to a hamstring injury. Merrill Kelly worked the final 5 2/3 innings, allowing just one run on three hits.

On Saturday evening the DBacks blew an early 3-0 lead but ended up walking it off with a 4-3 win in twelve innings. Daulton Varsho led off the twelfth inning with a triple and Ketel Marte singled him home past a drawn in infield as the DBacks retook first place in the NL West.

Arizona grabbed the lead in the first as David Peralta hit a sacrifice fly to score Ketel Marte after he led off the bottom of the first with a triple. Eduardo Escobar then doubled home Ildemaro Vargas to make it 2-0. They would stretch the lead to 3-0 in the second on an Ildemaro Vargas RBI single, that score Madison Bumgarner.

Bumgarner was in top form again in the mound. We went seven innings, allowing just one run on four hits while striking out seven. But he would get a no decision as Junior Guerra gave up back-to-back home runs to Austin Hedges and Mookie Betts to open the eighth.

Yoan Lopez was great out of the bullpen setting down six straight Dodgers in the tenth and eleventh innings. Andrew Chafin picked up the win as he worked a scoreless twelfth. The Dodgers managed just one hit after those back-to-back home runs to lead off the eighth.

In Sunday’s finale, the Dodgers jumped out to a 4-0 lead and made that stick as they escaped with a 4-2 victory to pick up a well earned split of the four game series in a playoff atmosphere at Chase Field. Joc Pederson went 3 for 4 with a double, home run and he drove in two runs to help lead the Dodgers to the victory.

Pederson singled home Cory Seager in the first inning to get the Dodgers on the board. Chris Taylor would single home Cody Bellinger to make it 2-0 off of Zac Gallen, one of the leaders in ERA in the National League.

Mookie Betts would throw out Kevin Cron at the plate to end the second inning on a single by Greg Allen.

The Dodgers would extend that lead in the third inning on a Joc Pederson solo home run. A Cody Belling RBI single in the fifth would make it 4-0 Dodgers and it appeared as though they would cruise with David Price on the mound.

In the sixth, Mookie Betts would throw out his second runner at the plate as he gunned down Eduardo Escobar on a Kevin Cron base hit.

Arizona would finally get on the board in the eighth, after David Price left the game. Starling Marte lined a two-out pinch hit single to score David Peralta. After Marte stole second, Daulton Varsho singled him home to cut the lead to 4-2. Varsho would steal second and reached third on a wild pitch, but Kole Calhoun flew out to the warning track in left to end the threat.

Kenley Jansen then came on in the ninth and after walking Ketel Marte with two out, and David Peralta reached on an error, he got Jake Lamb to line out to left to end the game and pick up his 32nd save.

David Price (10-4) picked up the win, going 7 1/3 innings and allowing one run on nine hits. He struck out seven and walked one. Zac Gallen (10-8) took the loss, allowing four runs on 11 hits. He struck out eight and walked one.

The DBacks ended the big home stand 4-3 against two division leaders and have positioned themselves nicely in the playoff picture as we head into August. Arizona heads out on a six game road trip with two games in Houston (57-54) and four in Pittsburgh (44-69).
