Re: Los DBacks - An MLB 20 Franchise Presented by BigJDotCom
September 7-10: ARIZONA (78-69) @ SAN DIEGO (75-72)
September 7: Padres 9, DBacks 5 (10)
September 8: DBacks 7, Padres 0
September 9: DBacks 2, Padres 1
September 10: DBacks 5, Padres 4
The DBacks overcame a tough loss in the opener to take the final three games against the Padres to help them remain in the NL Wild Card race.
Francisco Mejia hit a walk off grand slam off of Archie Bradley in the bottom of the tenth inning as San Diego rallied for a 9-5 victory in the opener of a huge four game series at Petco Park.
The Padres jumped out to an early 4-1 lead off of Mike Leake, thanks to the long ball as Manny Machado and Brian Dozer each hit dingers early on.
But the DBacks would rally with four in the top of the sixth to take a 5-4 lead with the big blow being a two-run triple by Starling Marte.
Eric Hosmer would even the game up in the bottom of the seventh hitting a two-out, two-strike solo home run off of Hector Rendon.
Kevein Ginkel would start the tenth for Arizona. He gave up a leadoff double to Eric Hosmer. He got one out then walked Tommy Pham and intentionally walked Manny Machado to load the bases. Torey Lovullo then brought in Archie Bradley and he hung a change up that Francisco Mejia blasted over the wall in dead center to end it in grand style.
The loss went to Kevin Ginkel who is now (1-7).
On Tuesday evening, it was the Corbin Martin show as he tossed a complete game three-hit shutout in a 7-0 DBacks victory. Martin (3-4) struck out six and did not allow a walk as he kept the Padres off balance all night mixing his excellent sinker with a solid curveball and decent fastball.
Arizona would get all the runs that they would need in the second inning. Dalton Varsho got things started with an RBI single. Then Ildemaro Vargas lined a two-run single to center that scored Jake Lamb and Allen. David Peralta would add an RBI single to make it 4-0.
Nick Ahmed homered to left in the fourth. The solo shot was his 14th on the year.
Eduardo Escobar hit a two-run home run in the ninth to cap off the evening. It was his team leading 35th on the season. Escobar, the National League’s leading hitter, went 2 for 5.
Garrett Richards (11-9) took the loss for San Diego. He only lasted 2 1/3 innings before being lifted. He allowed five runs on eight hits.
Arizona out hit the Padres 17-3 in the game and with the win remains four games back of Atlanta for the final NL Wild Card spot.
Wednesday evening was a pitchers duel that Madison Bumgarner won as the DBacks escaped with a 2-1 victory.
Bumgarner (14-7) pitched 6 2/3 innings, allowing just the one run on six hits. He struck out four and did not issue a walk. Junior Guerra came in and got him out of a jam in the seventh and worked a scoreless either, while Archie Bradley pitched the ninth to pick up his 33rd save.
David Peralta homered in the first inning and doubled home Ketel Marte in the third for the only two Diamondback runs.
The Padres lone run came when Manny Machado bounced into a fielder’s choice, beating out the throw to allow Valera to score in the bottom of the third.
Walker Buehler (8-9) was saddled with the loss for San Diego. He worked six plus innings, allowing the two runs on seven hits. He struck out seven.
The finale was an exciting one as the DBacks built an early 3-0 lead then saw that lead evaporate as the Padres scored three times in the bottom of the fifth inning to tie the game up.
A solo home run from Eduardo Escobar in the top of the sixth put Arizona back in front. They would add a huge insurance run in the top of the ninth and almost blew the game open but Franchy Cordero leapt over the wall and caught what would have been a Christian Walker grand slam to help keep the Padres in the game.
Luis Campusano hit a solo home run in the bottom half, his first MLB home run, but Archie Bradley locked it down and the DBacks won the game 5-4.
Zac Gallen (14-10) picked up the win. He carried a no hitter into the fifth, but left after that inning after allowing three runs on three hits. He struck out six and walked two. An odd occurrence happened in the ninth as Madison Bumgarner pinch hit for the Lopez. He was hit by a pitch, and Torey Lovullo did not take him out as a runner. He then had to start the ninth and face three batters after pitching yesterday. After giving up the home run to Campusano, Franchy Cordero doubled off the wall. Lovullo was then able to bring in Archie Bradley to close the game out as he picked up his 34th save.
Arizona (78-69) now heads to Los Angeles for a huge three game series.
Corbin Martin tossed a three hit shutout on Tuesday evening.Comment

September 11-13: ARIZONA (80-70) @ LOS ANGELES (90-61)
September 11: DBacks 6, Dodgers 1
September 12: DBacks 9, Dodgers 7
September 13: Dodgers 3, DBacks 1
The Arizona Diamondbacks took two of three from the first place Dodgers to help them stay in the NL Wild Card chase. The DBacks finished the road trip at a respectable (5-2) as they head home for their final home stand of the year.
The Diamondbacks took the opener 6-1 behind a strong start from Jon Duplantier. Duplantier (10-7) went seven innings and scattered four hits, allowing one earned run while striking out two and walking two.
Kole Calhoun doubled home Christian Walker in the second inning to give Arizona a 1-0 lead. Jurickson Profar singled home Joc Pederson to tie the game in the bottom half of the inning.
Arizona would take the lead for good in the third on a David Peralta RBI double. Eduardo Escobar would extend that lead to 3-1 in the fifth with an RBI single to center.
Starling Marte would homer off of Kolarek in the eighth. The two run shot was his eighth on the season and put Arizona up 5-1. They would add an insurance run in the ninth on an Eduardo Escobar RBI double.
Alex Wood (5-8) took the loss for Los Angeles. He went five innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on eight hits. The loss snapped the Dodgers three game winning streak and extended Arizona’s winning streak to four.
On Saturday evening, a Nick Ahmed two-run home run in the top of the ninth sent the DBacks on to a 9-7 victory as they ran their winning streak to five games.
This one featured the long ball as the teams combined for seven home runs. Eduardo Escobar hit two of them for Arizona as he went 3 for 5 with the two homers plus a double as he drove in six runs. Ketel Marte also homered for the DBacks.
Max Muncy, Justin Turner and Joc Pederson each homered for Los Angeles in the losing effort. The Dodgers scored twice in the bottom of the eighth off of Andrew Chafin to tie the game at 7-7.
Adam Kolarek came on in the ninth for LA. He got David Peralta to ground to short, but the throw to first could not be handled by AJ Pollack. Nick Ahmed then launched a moonshot into the centerfield netting to give Arizona the lead.
Archie Bradley came on and sent down the Dodgers in order to pick up his 35th save and keep Arizona’s Wild Card hopes alive.
In the finale, it was a Joc Pederson three-run first inning home run that provided all the offense that Los Angeles would need in a 3-1 victory over the DBacks. Corbin Martin allowed the first two batters to reach in the first, then struck out both Cody Bellinger and Max Muncy. He has Pederson down 1-2, then hung a slider and Pederson made no mistake, drilling it into the right field bleachers.
The DBacks would have their chances in this one, but could not convert. They left the bases loaded in the second with Corbin Martin striking out to end the inning. They also left runners on second and third in the seventh. The lone DBacks run came on a fielders choice in the sixth inning as Eduardo Escobar beat out a double play.
Corbin Martin (3-5) took the loss despite a decent performance. He went six innings and allowed just six hits and the three first inning runs. He struck out five and did not issue a walk. Joe Kelly (7-1) picked up the win in relief of Paddack, who left the game with shoulder tightness in the third. Los Angeles used eight pitchers in the victory with Kenley Jansen closing it out for his league leading 47th save.
Arizona returns home for the final home stand of 2020 as they will host San Francisco and San Diego.

September 14-16: SAN FRANCISCO (70-83) @ ARIZONA (83-70)
September 14: DBacks 4, Giants 0
September 15: DBacks 8, Giants 1
September 16: DBacks 6, Giants 3
The DBacks stayed red-hot as they swept the San Francisco Giants in a three game series at Chase Field to stay in the Wild Card hunt as the season winds down.
In the opener, Joel Payamps, making his first start of 202 after getting called up from Triple-A Reno, tossed a one-hit shutout as the DBacks blanked the Giants 4-0.
Payamps (1-0) threw just 80 pitches with Mike Yastremski’s double to open the seventh, then only baserunner that he allowed the entire game.
Arizona scored twice in the first on an Ildemaro Vargas RBI single and a sacrifice fly from Kole Calhoun. They would add two more in the second on a David Peralta two-run double. That would be all for the offense despite piling up 12 hits.
Johnny Cueto (7-13) took the loss for the Giants. He only lasted 4 2/3 innings, allowing 10 hits and the four runs. The Giants bullpen finished the final 3 1/3 innings, allowing just two hits and no runs.
On Tuesday evening the DBacks cruised to an 8-1 victory over the Giants. Zac Gallen wasn’t dominant, but he worked his was around the Giants, allowing just one run and scattering nine hits. He struck out eight and walked just one as he improved to (15-10).
Ildemaro Vargas put together a game Tuesday evening. He went 4 for 5 with two doubles, a home run and he drove in six runs. The home run, a three run shot in the fifth that blew the game wide open, was his second on the season. He also added a two run double in the four run sixth inning.
Andrew Suarez (5-10) took the loss for San Francisco. He made it through just 4 1/3 innings, allowing four runs on eight hits. Jeff Samardzjia wasn’t much better in relief. He went one inning, allowing four runs on six hits.
In the finale, the DBacks hit three home runs as they defeated the Giants 6-3. David Peralta led the way, going 3 for 4 with two doubles and a home run in the victory.
Eduardo Escobar hit a two-run home run in the first inning off of John Smyly. It was his 39th on the season. Peralta and Christian Walker would each homer in the fifth to move the DBacks in front 6-2.
Jon Duplantier (11-7) picked up the win. He went five innings, allowing two runs on six hits. He struck out three and walked two. John Smyly (4-18) took the loss for the Giants. He went five innings, allowing six runs on eight hits including the three home runs.
The DBacks will next host the San Diego Padres in a four game series to close out the home schedule.

September 17-20: SAN DIEGO (79-77) @ ARIZONA (86-71)
September 17: DBacks 2, Padres 1
September 18: DBacks 3, Padres 0
September 19: DBacks 7, Padres 2
September 20: Padres 6, DBacks 4 (11)
The DBacks took three of four from the Padres and have moved into a Wild Card spot with just five games left in the season.
The DBacks stunned the Padres in the opener, scoring twice in the bottom of the ninth to pull out an improbable 2-1 victory. Nick Ahmed beat out a possible inning ending double play, allowing Kole Calhoun to score the game winning run as the DBacks keep their Wild Card hopes alive.
This one was a pitching duel between Madison Bumgarner and Garrett Richards. Both were on top of their games with Bumgarner going eight innings and allowing just one run on four hits, while striking out ten and walking none. Richards made it to the bottom of the ninth before getting lifted after allowing a leadoff single to David Peralta. He went eight plus innings, allowing the one run on six hits while striking out seven.
Kirby Yates (0-1) took the loss, giving up a single to Kole Calhoun and RBI single to Jake Lamb, before Ahmed’s game winning fielder’s choice. It was just his second blown save of the season in 45 chances.
On Friday evening, the DBacks got another great pitching performance on their way to a 3-0 victory over the Padres. Corbin Martin (4-5) tossed six shutout innings, allowing only two hits, while striking out five and walking two.
Red-hot Arizona would get all the runs that Corbin would need in the first on a Kole Colhoun solo home run, his 31st on the season.
Jake Lamb added two huge insurance runs in the sixth with a two-out, two-run single.
The bullpen was excellent with Hector Rondon, Lopez and Archie Bradley combining to allow just one hit over the final three innings.
Zach Davies (11-8) was the hard luck loser for the Padres. He went six innings and allowed the three runs on just six hits.
The DBacks took the third game of the weekend series on Saturday evening by a 7-2 score. Carson Kelly’s bases clearing three-run double in the bottom of the eighth blew open a tight game as the DBacks won their fifth straight game.
Joel Payamps (2-0) won his second straight start in September after his call up and he was excellent once again. He tossed six innings, allowing two runs on seven hits, while striking out three.
Nick Ahmed got the DBacks going with a two-run home run in the first inning, his 16th on the season.
After the Padres pulled back to within 3-2, the DBacks scored four times in the bottom of the eighth to pull away.
This win moved the DBacks into a tie with the Atlanta Braves for the second NL Wild Card spot with six games remaining.
In the finale, the DBacks rallied from a four run deficit to force extra innings, but could not finish it off as they dropped a 6-4 decision. Brian Dozier homered off of Archie Bradley in the top of the eleventh inning to send San Diego to the win as they avoided a four game sweep of the weekend series.
The Padres went up 2-0 in the second inning on a Wil Myers two-out, two-run single. They would extend that lead to 4-0 when Manny Machado homered off of Zac Gallen in the third.
Arizona chipped away with an Ildemaro Vargas sacrifice fly and a Josh Rojas solo home run in the fourth. Kole Calhoun added an RBI single in the fifth to cut the Padres lead to one. Nick Ahmed then tied it in the seventh with a pinch-hit home run, his 17th on the season.
But the DBacks could not find a go ahead run and fell in extra innings.
The loss dropped Arizona into a tie with the Braves for the final Wild Card spot in the National League. Arizona will finish with five road games, two in San Francisco and three in Colorado. Atlanta (85-70) finishes with seven games, all at home, four with Washington (75-80) and then three with Houston (82-73).
Nick Ahmed and the DBacks are now closing in on a Wild Card berth.Comment

September 22-23: ARIZONA (88-71) @ SAN FRANCISCO (71-87)
September 22: DBacks 12, Giants 5
September 23: DBacks 3, Giants 2
The DBacks swept the quick two game series by rallying in the eighth inning of both games to turn possible losses into wins.
The DBacks rallied late in the opener, hitting four home runs in a six run eighth to go from one down to up 10-5. They would add a couple more runs in the ninth to win 12-5 in a critical game in the Wild Card race.
Jon Duplantier did not have his best stuff on the mound and it showed. He allowed runs in the first three innings as he struggled with control both in and out of the zone. He managed to last 4 1/3 innings, allowing four runs on seven hits. The bullpen, which has been very good lately, continued its run as it allowed just one run over the final 4 2/3 innings. Hector Rondon (2-0) worked the seventh to pick up the win.
Arizona hit six home runs in the game. David Peralta hit two (28, 29), Eduardo Escobar hit his 40th, Kole Calhoun (32), Nick Ahmed (18) and Starling Marte (9) each homered.
Nick Ahmed left the game in the fourth inning after he tripled. He appeared to injure his right hand sliding into third and he was forced to leave the game for x-rays.
On Wednesday evening, David Peralta lined an RBI double in the top of the eighth and Eduardo Escobar hit a sacrifice fly as Arizona scored twice to take a late lead, then held on for a 3-2 victory.
The DBacks took a 1-0 lead in the second as Carson Kelly singled to right, scoring Starling Marte. San Francisco would get that run right back with as Brandon Crawford doubled home Brandon Belt in the bottom half.
The Giants would take the lead in the sixth on a Pablo Sandoval sacrifice fly to center that scored Mike Yastremski.
Ketel Marte opened the eighth with a hustle double and scored on a David Peralta RBI double. Christian Walker singled off of the bag at second which forced Peralta to stop at third. That set up Eduardo Escobar with the sacrifice fly to put Arizona in front. It was Escobar’s 96th RBI on the season.
Archie Bradley worked a perfect ninth to pick up his 37th save.
Arizona (88-71) will now have tomorrow off and travel to Colorado (86-73) for the final series of the season. Arizona, Atlanta and St Louis are all tied at (88-71) with the Rockies two games back in the Wild Card. The Braves will host Houston who trails in the AL Wild Card by two games, while the Cardinals travel to Chicago to take on the first place Cubs.
David Peralta admires his go ahead home run on Tuesday evening.Comment
