Rodriguez Stars As Red Sox Squeeze Past Jays

The Boston Red Sox squeezed past the Toronto Blue Jays 3-2 on Wednesday night to wrap up the month of April on a positive note. Boston starter Eduardo Rodriguez was dominant through seven innings of work, shutting down a Blue Jays lineup that has tortured left handed pitching all season long. The Red Sox southpaw held the Blue Jays to just four hits and racked up five strikeouts, with his only mistake being a solo home run surrendered to Cavan Biggio in the second inning.

J.D. Martinez went 2-for-4 with a double and a home run in the win as the Red Sox made up for some ground in the American League East standings.

Blue Jays starter Ryan Borucki was effective while filling in for injured ace Hyun-Jin Ryu. The 26-year old southpaw went 7 2/3 innings of work in his second start of the season, holding the Red Sox to three runs on six hits while striking out eight.

The Blue Jays have Thursday off before they kick off the month of May by welcoming the New York Yankees into town for a weekend series.

While the Blue Jays lost prized free agent pickup Hyun-Jin Ryu to injury halfway through the month, the team did manage to put together a very successful nine game road trip, going 6-3 against division foes Tampa Bay, Boston, and Baltimore. While the Blue Jays added in a sweep of the Red Sox in the middle of the road trip, the start of the month was less friendly for the Blue Jays, who would experience an up-and-down early run.

      The Positive:
A 19-12 start to the regular season has had the Blue Jays exceeding many people's expectations, and it was lead by a strong first month from young stars Bo Bichette and Vladimir Guerrero Jr.. Bichette, who has started the season in the leadoff spot for Charlie Montoyo's squad has put together a .319 batting average, and while the two home runs are a little underwhelming from the sophomore shortstop, his ten doubles have really helped jumpstart the Blue Jays' offence.

Guerrero Jr. has provided a large amount of power in the middle of the order for the Blue Jays, with a .631 slugging percentage made up of eight home runs and eleven doubles to go along with an impressive .297 batting average.

On the pitching side of things, Chase Anderson has exceeded all expectations. Anderson, who missed his first start of the season due to injury, has compiled a 0.87 WHIP and 2.87 ERA through 31 1/3 innings of work. Anderson has provided a stabilizing force in a rotation that has seen it's ups and downs this season.

      The Negative:
Outfielders Teoscar Hernandez and Derek Fisher have really struggled in the early goings of the regular season. Specifically, Fisher has struggled more than Hernandez, putting together a horrific .187 batting average with next to no power. While Hernandez has struggled to a slightly better (but still poor) .194 average, he has managed to drive in 13 runs on account of six home runs. Hernandez has showed flashes of brilliance, including a few clutch home runs in the early goings.

Tanner Roark has struggled in the rotation for the Blue Jays. Roark, who signed a big offseason deal, was expected to be a stabilizing force for a young Blue Jays rotation, but has instead struggled to a 1-3 record with a 1.33 WHIP and 4.36 ERA, good enough for second-worst on the team.

        Game Notes
The American League East-leading New York Yankees kick off the month of May by visiting the Toronto Blue Jays, who trail the Yankees by just a game and a half in the AL East standings. The two clubs have both been off the good starts this season, posting eerily similar stats.

The Yankees have been bit by the injury bug as of late, with Brett Gardner and Gleyber Torres suffering from fractured shins. The Yankees are also without starting pitcher Luis Severino and catcher Gary Sanchez, who are both dealing with day-to-day ailments. The most notable absence will likely be Sanchez, who has been a workhorse behind the plate for the Yankees so far this season.

The Blue Jays on the other hand, will be happy to see their matchup as they take on lefties James Paxton and Jordan Montgomery. The Blue Jays have hit left handed pitching exceptionally well so far this season, and will look to continue that trend in a big weekend series.

Roark Shines As Blue Jays Kick Off May With Win Over Yankees

The Toronto Blue Jays got off to a good start in the month of May with a 6-1 win over the American League East-leading New York Yankees. After ending April with straight losses, the Blue Jays got back into the win column thanks to a stellar performance from starting pitcher Tanner Roark.

Roark, who underwhelmed in the first month of action, went the distance for the Blue Jays, the second complete game of the season for the Jays (with the first one belonging to Matt Shoemaker). Roark got off to a rough start by surrendering a solo homer to Yankees leadoff hitter Tyler Wade, but settled in nicely after. The offseason signee finished with seven strikeouts over his nine innings of work, surrendering only seven hits.

The Blue Jays also welcomed Lourdes Gurriel Jr. back into the lineup after the youngster missed the last two games with a sprained knee. Gurriel Jr. didn't seem to have missed a beat, going 3-for-5. Gurriel Jr. drove in his 100th career RBI with a double into the gap in the fifth inning that scored Randal Grichuk to give the Jays a 2-1 lead at the time.

Brandon Drury went deep for his first homer of the season, a three-run shot in the seventh inning that blew the game open and took some pressure off the Blue Jays.

The Yankees and Blue Jays continue their three game weekend series tomorrow afternoon with a matchup of veteran righties Matt Shoemaker and Masahiro Tanaka.

Blue Jays Use Hot Start To Take Down Yankees

The Toronto Blue Jays tagged Yankees starter Masahiro Tanaka for five runs over five innings as they road a hot start to a 7-4 victory over the New York Yankees on Saturday afternoon.

Playing with the roof open for the first time this season, the Blue Jays got off to a great start when Bo Bichette left the yard on the third pitch of the ballgame to leadoff the bottom of the first inning for the Blue Jays. Rowdy Tellez and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. would both add solo homers off Tanaka, as the Blue Jays piled on the hits early on.

Blue Jays starter Matt Shoemaker picked up eight strikeouts over seven innings of work, surrendering four runs. Aaron Judge kicked off the offence for the Yankees with a solo blast to center field in the fourth inning. The Yankees would add three runs in the fifth inning capped off by a loud double off the bat off Giancarlo Stanton.

Blue Jays outfielder Teoscar Hernandez went 2-for-3 at the plate with a walk and two stolen bases. The Blue Jays sit dead last in the MLB in stolen bases.

The Blue Jays aim for their third sweep of the season tomorrow afternoon as they take on the Yankees in the third and final game of the series. The Blue Jays overtook first place in the American League East standings by half a game with Saturday afternoon's win.

Blue Jays Sweep Yankees With Walk-Off Win

The Toronto Blue Jays recorded a huge sweep of their rival New York Yankees with a 4-1 win in ten innings on Sunday evening, boosting their lead in the American League East standings to a game and a half.

Teoscar Hernandez turned around a 1-2 slider from Yankees reliever Aroldis Chapman and deposited it into the left field seats in the tenth inning to give the Jays their third straight win.

Blue Jays starter Trent Thornton and Yankees starter Jordan Montgomery were locked in a pitcher's duel all afternoon long. Thornton tossed 7 1/3 innings of one-run ball while racking up ten strikeouts along the way. Montgomery turned in an equally impressive 7 innings of one-run work, allowing just two hits - a double to Rowdy Tellez and RBI single to Brandon Drury.

The Yankees got a nice surprise when Gary Sanchez returned to the lineup, but the superstar back catcher was clearly rusty, going 0-for-4 at the plate with 4 strikeouts.

The Blue Jays look to keep the momentum going as they take on the Baltimore Orioles in an upcoming three game set.

                Game Notes
The Toronto Blue Jays look to keep the ball rolling after a weekend sweep of the New York Yankees that handed Toronto first place in the American League East standings for the first time this season. The Baltimore Orioles on the other hand have been suffering through a dreadful season thus far, compiling a 7-27 record and sitting 15 games out of first in the AL East standings.

Teoscar Hernandez has started to turn things around for the Blue Jays after a slow first month of action and now sits tied for first with a team-high 16 RBIs after a strong weekend showing against the Yankees. Hernandez has been using his speed to create havoc on the base paths, something the Blue Jays severely lack after sitting dead last in the MLB with 3 stolen bases.

Jose Iglesias has been a pleasant surprise for the lowly Baltimore Orioles, as the veteran shortstop has quietly put together a .310 batting average from the leadoff spot for the Orioles.

Biggio And Anderson Lead Blue Jays To Fourth Straight Win

Cavan Biggio went deep to give the Blue Jays a one-run lead in the sixth inning and Chase Anderson went eight strong innings of work as the Blue Jays moved to 11 games above .500 with a 3-2 win over the Baltimore Orioles.

Austin Hayes went deep with a solo homer for the Orioles, who lost their eighth straight game and saw their record continue to plummet to an awful 7-28 record.

Orioles starter Josh Rogers was tagged with his seventh loss of the season, dropping his record to 0-7 after going five innings while allowing three runs.

The Blue Jays mustered only four hits against the Orioles pitching staff, but got off to a hot start when Randal Grichuk drove in Cavan Biggio before scoring himself on a Vladimir Guerrero Jr. sacrifice fly. Biggio made his first appearance in the leadoff spot for Charlie Montoyo's Blue Jays and made quite the splash, going 2-for-3 with a walk and the eventual game-winning homer.

The Blue Jays aim for their fifth straight victory tomorrow evening as they take on the Orioles in the middle game of the three game set.

Blue Jays Option Fisher, Recall McKinney

The Toronto Blue Jays have announced that they have optioned outfielder Derek Fisher to Triple-A Buffalo and recalled fellow outfielder Billy McKinney from Triple-A Buffalo.

The move seems to simply be a swap of a struggling outfielder and an outfielder exceeding expectations at the Triple-A level.

Fisher, acquired last season from the Houston Astros, has struggled out of the gate this season, posting a .171 batting average with one home run through the first month of the season and has seen his playing time diminish as Charlie Montoyo has managed to source some production from other role players. To make matters worse, Fisher has played terrible defence in the outfield this season, committing several costly errors that have hurt the Blue Jays. He'll look to spend some time at Triple-A with the Buffalo Bisons as he tries to get his swing back on track and install some confidence in himself.

McKinney on the other hand, has been quite impressive this season for the Buffalo Bisons. The 25-year old has been one of the Bisons' most reliable hitters, posting a .306 batting average with four home runs and 10 RBIs. McKinney's red-hot bat made it tough for the Blue Jays brass to not warrant a call-up, and the decision makers have evidently decided to give McKinney a look at the big-league level. He is expected to be in the line-up on Tuesday as the Blue Jays take on the Baltimore Orioles.

Borucki Twirls Complete Game Shutdown As Jays Take Down Orioles

The month of May continued to be a blessing for the Toronto Blue Jays' pitching staff as Ryan Borucki led the Jays to their fifth straight victory with 1 2-0 win over the Baltimore Orioles.

Making his third start of the season, Borucki tossed a complete game shutout against the AL East-worst Baltimore Orioles. The southpaw went the distance with six strikeouts while surrendering just six hits on 110 pitches.

The Blue Jays got on the board early when shortstop Bo Bichette led the game off with a booming double and scored two batters later on a Lourdes Gurriel Jr. RBI single. Billy McKinney, who was called up early in the day, made a splash in his first MLB appearance of the season by crushing a 421-foot solo home run in the 7th inning.

Orioles starter John Means didn't pitch poorly by any means, but was saddled with the loss - his third of the season. The left-handed throwing Means lasted only five innings, but only surrendered the one run in the first inning.

The Blue Jays aim for their second straight sweep tomorrow afternoon against the Orioles as they try to claim their sixth straight win.

McKinney, Hernandez Lead Blue Jays To Sweep Of Orioles

The Toronto Blue Jays picked up their sixth straight win and a series sweep of the Baltimore Orioles with a 6-4 win in the Sunday afternoon series finale.

Teoscar Hernandez and Billy McKinney both went deep for the Blue Jays, who overcame some sloppy defence early on to take down the Orioles. Blue Jays starter Tanner Roark picked up his second win of the season by going 6 1/3 innings of work while surrendering four runs (only two earned) on six hits.

The win came at a cost for the Blue Jays, who saw Travis Shaw exit the game in the seventh inning after swinging and missing at a Travis Lakins high fastball. While injury details have yet to be released, it can be assumed that Shaw will be required to miss some time by the looks of the injury.

Hanser Alberto, Austin Hays, and Jose Iglesias all homered in the loss for the Orioles, who became the first team in the MLB to reach the 30-loss mark. The team has struggled mightily of late, and the loss also represented the team's ninth consecutive loss.

The Blue Jays get a day off tomorrow as they travel to Oakland to take on the Oakland Athletics for a three game weekend set. The series against Oakland marks the start of a long West Coast road trip for the Jays.

Blue Jays Place Shaw On IL, Recall Davis

The Toronto Blue Jays announced some unfortunate news on Friday morning, announcing that the injury suffered by first baseman Travis Shaw was more serious that originally thought. Shaw was diagnosed with a separated shoulder and is expected to be sidelined for the next 1 to 2 months.

Shaw suffered the injury after he swung through a high fastball in the Blue Jays' 6-5 win over the Orioles on Wednesday afternoon and has been placed on the 10-day injured list. The offseason signee had been in a slump at the plate of late, but has been productive for the Blue Jays this season, providing 8 home runs and 15 RBIs as part of a .235 batting average. He has supplied the Blue Jays with some much-needed pop in the middle of the line-up.

With the lack of depth in the organization at the first base position, the Blue Jays have opted to recall outfielder Jonathan Davis from Triple-A Buffalo. Davis had been putting together a consistent season for the Buffalo Bisons with a .244 batting average to go along with one home run, five RBIs, and four stolen bases.

With Rowdy Tellez now being the only legitimate first baseman on there Blue Jays' 26-man roster, expect Brandon Drury to eat up most of Shaw's innings at first base with Alford replacing Drury's role in the outfield.

                            Game Notes
The Blue Jays enter their series against the Oakland Athletics riding a six game win streak and will continue to try to find ways to pad their lead in the American League East. The Athletics themselves are riding a hot streak as well, coming off a sweep of American League West rival Seattle Mariners and will look to keep the ball rolling against the Blue Jays.

Teoscar Hernandez continues to swing a red-hot bat in the month of May, smacking his eighth homer of the season in the Jays' 6-4 win over the Orioles on Wednesday. With Travis Shaw out of the lineup, expect to see Brandon Drury receive some more playing time at the first base position.

Shortstop Marcus Semien has been a pleasant surprise for the Athletics so far this season, accumulating an impressive .299 batting average heading into play on Friday with an uncharacteristic 9 home runs and 21 RBIs.

Shoemaker, Blue Jays Squeeze Past Athletics

The Toronto Blue Jays picked up their seventh straight win in the first game of their West Coast road trip with a 3-2 win over the Oakland Athletics.

Matt Shoemaker cruised through eight innings of the work, allowing only two runs on an Austin Allen two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning. Shoemaker would pick up six strikeouts and scatter six hits over his eight innings of work as the Blue Jays continued to receive stellar production from their rotation.

The Blue Jays kicked off the scoring against Oakland Athletics starter A.J. Puk with a Brandon Drury RBI single in the second inning. Put would settle in after that, going six innings while striking out four strikeouts.

The Blue Jays would get the deciding blow in the top half of the eighth inning when Randal Grichuk took Athletics reliever J.B. Wendelken into the second deck in left field with a 421-foot two-run blast.

The Blue Jays look to continue their success on Saturday night against the Athletics as they aim for their eighth consecutive win.

Blue Jays Rough Up Manaea In Eighth Straight Win

The Toronto Blue Jays are in full win mode. The American League East-leading Blue Jays picked up their eighth straight win with a 8-3 victory over the Oakland Athletics on Saturday evening.

Lourdes Gurriel Jr. led the way for a the red-hot Blue Jays lineup, going 5-for-5 at the plate with two doubles. Gurriel Jr. would cross the plate three times and drive in one more as he accounted for four runs in the Blue Jays' win.

The Jays got to Athletics lefty Sean Manaea early and often, tagging the Athletics ace for six runs on seven hits over four long innings of work. Manaea struggled to keep the ball in the yard, surrendering four homers in his four innings of work, most notably a three-run blast off the bat of young Jays slugger Vladimir Guerrero Jr..

Blue Jays starter Trent Thornton worked six innings and allowed three runs - two earned - on five hits. The 26-year old sophomore has shown great stuff early on this season, and recorded ten strikeouts in Saturday night's victory.

The Athletics scored all three of their runs courtesy of Matt Olson, who picked up his ninth homer of the season with a two-run home run off of Thornton in the sixth inning.

In some positive news, the Blue Jays announced that they have activated ace Hyun-Jin Ryu off the 15-day injured list. Ryu had been sidelined with a sprained elbow ligament. To make room on the 26-man roster, the Blue Jays optioned Ryan Borucki to Triple-A Buffalo. The Blue Jays shoot for their third consecutive series sweep tomorrow evening as they wrap up their three game series against the Athletics.
