    APR 8-10: COLORADO SPRINGS (6-4) @ FLAGSTAFF (5-4)
    Stadium: Autozone Park (Capacity: 9486)

    April 8: Snow Sox 7, Hops 5
    April 9: Hops 5, Snow Sox 4
    April 10: Snow Sox 4, Hops 2

Flagstaff, AZ (AP) - The Colorado Snow Sox took two of three in a inaugural home series for the Flagstaff Hops at Autozone Park. They rallied late in games one and three to take the series and move back ahead of Flagstaff in the ML West.

The Colorado Springs Snow Sox got some ninth inning heroics from Donnell Marcus on Friday afternoon as he hit a two-run home run to break a tie ball game and help the visitors ruin Flagstaff’s home debut in a 7-5 victory. Marcus hit two home runs and drove in five to help pace the Snow Sox.

This one got off to a fast start with Marcus hitting a three-run home run in the first after Ryan Pressley walked two batters, to put the Snow Sox up 3-0. But Roberto Geronimo tied things up in the bottom half with a rocket down the left field line that just cleared the wall. It was his third home run in two games since being recalled from Triple-A Albuquerque.

Arturo Mardones would give the Hops the lead in the second with an opposite field, two-run home run off of Mike Stoneridge. Mardones would go 3 for 5 with a single, double and home run.

The Snow Sox would tie the game up on solo home runs from Juan Primo in the fourth and Eric Lowe in the fifth off of starter Ryan Pressley. That would setup the visitors for some ninth inning heroics from Donnell Marcus.

Closer Vic Miller (0-1) took the loss for Flagstaff, coming in to a tied ballgame. Ryan Pressley pitched a decent game, going seven innings, allowing the five runs on just four hits, but three were home runs. He struck out three and walked two. Mike Stoneridge wasn’t as good for Colorado Springs, lasting just five innings and allowing the five runs on eights hits. He struck out one and walked one.

The Snow Sox bullpen was the story though, shutting out Flagstaff over the final four innings and allowing just one hit and two baserunners.

On Saturday evening, the Hops rallied for a 5-4 victory on a frigid evening to even the series. Oscar Aleman continued his torrid hitting, going 1 for 4 with another home run, his fifth on the season, and he drove in two to help lead Flagstaff to the win.

Colorado Springs jumped out to an early lead in the first inning. Sam Conley singled home Eric Lowe, who doubled to open the game. Donnell Marcus then lined a two-out run scoring double to make it 2-0.

The Hops would load the bases in the third, but Josh Ortega flew out to Primo in left to end the threat.

They would finally break through against starter Jack Withenshaw in the fourth as Oscar Aleman crushed a ball into the right field bleachers to tie the game at 2-2.

Sam Conley would like a two-out, two-run double in the top of the fifth to help the Snow Sox regain the lead 4-2. Conley went 2 for 4 with the double and three RBIs in the game. Josh Ortega would get one back in the bottom half, doubling home Robbie Westbrook.

Colorado Springs went to their bullpen in the sixth, bringing in George Cortes, and it did not work out too well. Kiko Pressley grounded out to third, allowing Rodney Millar to score to tie the ballgame. Millar had walked, reached second on an infield single from Arturo Mardones and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Robbie Westbrook then singled home Mardones to give Flagstaff the lead.

Aldo Osuna and Miguel Asencio would work the final four scoreless innings out of the bullpen for the Hops to secure the victory. Osuna (1-0) allowed just one hit in three innings to pick up the win, while Asencio worked the ninth to pick up his first save. Steve Hubbard got the start for the Hops, lasting just five innings and allowing four runs on seven hits. He struck out five and walked one, leaving the game trailing 4-3.

Saturday evening was the first game that Flagstaff did not allow a home run. They had allowed 25 in their first seven games, worst in the league.

In the rubber match on Sunday afternoon, Juan Primo’s two-run home run off of Sam Herzog in the top of the seventh helped the Snow Sox rally past the Hops and win the finale 4-2.

Flagstaff (5-4) grabbed a 2-0 lead in the second inning on a Roberto Geronimo solo home run, his fourth, and an RBI single from Rafael Perez.

The Snow Sox (6-4) would get on the board in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 2-1. Then manager Bud Black made the decision to send Sam Herzog back out to pitch the seventh, hoping to get three more outs. Herzog got touched up for a Donnell Marcus double to open the inning and then saw Juan Primo blast on onto the grassy berm in left to put Colorado Springs up 3-2.

The Snow Sox would add an insurance run in the ninth on a James Dudeck RBI double.

Sam Herzog (0-1) took the loss despite pitching well. He went six plus innings, allowing three runs on six hits. He struck out three and walked one. Pedro Rosales (2-0) picked up the win in relief for Colorado Springs. He pitched one scoreless inning. Jeff Cabrera picked up his third save, allowing only a walk in the ninth.

Flagstaff will now head to Long Beach (6-4) for a quick two game series with the Surf Dawgs before returning home to face El Paso and Austin.

Around the IBL: Long Beach’s Chuck Sanchez tossed a one-hitter in Saturday’s 1-0 victory over Tucson. Long Beach has posted back-to-back complete game shutouts of the Roadrunners.

      APRIL 11-12: FLAGSTAFF (6-5) @ LONG BEACH (7-5)
      Stadium: Harbor Park (Capacity: 11685)

      April 11: Surf Dawgs 2, Hops 1
      April 12: Hops 7, Surf Dawgs 1

Long Beach, CA (AP) - The Flagstaff Hops split a quick two game series with the Long Beach Surf Dawgs in Southern California. The Hops got some great pitching in both games and ended the short two game road trip with a split.

After playing their first nine games at elevation, the Hops took a trip to the beach and in the opener lost 2-1 in a pitchers duel to the Surf Dawgs. Steve Willis was excellent for the Dawgs, tossing 6 2/3 innings, striking out seven and allowing just one run to pick up his first win on the young season.

The Hops grabbed the lead in the third inning on an Arturo Mardones RBI double.

With the wind blowing in and the thick marine air, the ball was not flying like it had for the first part of the year in Flagstaff, St George and Colorado Springs. That lead to a ton of fly ball outs that just seemed to die short of the warning track.

Long Beach would do all of their damage in the fifth inning. Ponder singled to center to open the frame. Machado then doubled to right center to score Ponder. Carroll grounded one off of Robbie Westbrook for an infield single and then Castro grounded out to short to score Machado.

Robert Francis (1-1) once again pitched well for the Hops, but his two runs allowed were not enough. He tossed six innings, scattering six hits and allowing the two runs, while striking out five and walking just one.

Pedro Macias was excellent once again out of the bullpen for the Hops. He was perfect in two innings, striking out one to lower his ERA to 1.29 in five appearances.

The loss dropped the Hops back to .500 at (5-5).

The Hops took game two on Wednesday evening 7-1 behind a complete game from rookie Shoe Lace O’Tying. He was spectacular in picking up his first career victory, scattering seven hits and striking out five, while walking none.

The Hops would get all the runs that they would need in the second inning on a Robert Geronimo two-run home run. It was his fifth on the year, tying him for the team lead. Art Mason would add a three-run blast in the fifth inning to blow this one open. Robbie Westbrook would add a solo shot in the ninth. Oscar Aleman added an RBI single in the seventh.

The only blemish on O’Tying’s evening was a solo home run from Adrian Esparza to lead off the seventh for Long Beach.

Art Mason stole three bases in the game with Robbie Westbrook also grabbing a bag.

Flagstaff (6-5) will return home to face El Paso in a four game series beginning on Thursday evening.

Re: Intermountain Baseball League - Presented by BigJdotcom01

        APR 14-17: EL PASO (10-5) @ FLAGSTAFF (8-7)
        Stadium: Autozone Park (Capacity: 9,486)

        April 14: Hops 6, Blue Rocks 4 (10)
        April 15: Blue Rocks 9, Hops 6
        April 16: Hops 6, Blue Rocks 1
        April 17: Blue Rocks 7, Hops 1

Flagstaff (AP) - The Flagstaff Hops split a four game weekend series with Central leading El Paso. The teams alternated wins with the Hops taking games one and three, while the Blue Rocks took games two and four.

The Flagstaff Hops took the opener 6-4 in ten innings thanks to a walk off two-run home run from Josh Ortega on a frigid night at Autozone Park. That came after closer Vic Miller blew a save opportunity in the ninth, allowing two runs on three hits to the Central Division leads Blue Rocks.

Flagstaff would take the lead in the fourth inning. Robert Geronimo reached on an infield single, stole second and scored on an Oscar Aleman double. They would extend that lead to 2-0 in the fifth as Rafael Perez homered to right. It was his first on the season.

Shuheii Takahashi was a one man wrecking crew for El Paso and it started in the sixth. He led off with a single, stole second and scored on a Moore single to center.

Oscar Aleman would get that run right back with a two-out, RBI single to center that scored Rodney Millar to make it 3-1.

Takahashi was at it again in the top of the seventh, as he lined a two-out single to center to knock in Eloy Torrez. The Hops would get that run back in the bottom of the seventh thanks to two El Paso errors on the infield.

It would go to the ninth with the Hops up 4-2 and Vic Miller coming on to close it out. But Shuheii Takahashi had other ideas. With two outs, he lined a triple into the right centerfield gap to score Phil Colon. Josh Hawk then lined a single past a diving Kiko Pressley at third and into left field to tie the game at 4-4.

That blown save overshadowed a couple of nice pitching performances from the Hops. Starter Ryan Pressley tossed six solid innings, allowing two runs on eight hits, while striking out seven and walking none. Pedro Macais pitched 1 1/3 innings of solid relief.

The Hops would pull it out in the tenth though as Josh Ortega blasted a two-run home run over the wall in left center to walk it off.

Miguel Asencio (2-0) picked up the victory, throwing 1 1/3 innings and allowing no base runners, while striking out two.

On a frigid Friday night at Autozone Park, it was once again the Shuheii Takahashi show as he went 4 for 5 with a double, two RBI and two runs scored in a 9-6 Blue Rocks victory. He also stole three more bases and has six in the first two games to go along with his 8 for 10 at the plate.

Tommie Bennett homered twice for El Paso and also added a double with three RBIs to also help pace an offense that pounded out 18 hits in the victory. Brandon Gayle went 4 for 5 with three doubles and two RBIs.

For the Hops, Art Mason and Rodney Millar each homered but the big news coming out of this one was the injury to left fielder Oscar Aleman. He injured his right shoulder when he slammed into the wall in the seventh trying to make a catch. He is expected to miss about two weeks and will likely go on the 10-day injury list. He was leading the team with a .429 average with five home runs and 11 RBIs.

Steve Hubbard (0-1) was saddled with the loss in this one. He lasted just four innings, allowing five runs on eight hits, while striking out five. The bullpen wasn’t much better over the final five innings, giving up four runs on 11 hits.

Alfonso Murillo (2-0) picked up the win for El Paso, but he wasn’t great. He allowed four runs on five hits, struck out four, but walked three. Sam Lopez picked up his league leading sixth save working the final four outs. He has not allowed a run this season.

On another cold evening, the Hops took the third game of the series on Saturday by a score of 6-1. Sam Herzog tossed seven innings, allowing just the single run on four hits. He struck out five and walked just one as he improved to (1-1).

Flagstaff (8-6) got off to a quick start as Roberto Geronimo and Donnie Roland each homered in the second inning to stake the Hops to a 3-0 lead. They would extend it to 5-0 in the fifth on a Kiko Pressley two-run double.

El Paso would get their lone run on the evening in the top of the seventh as Omar Chavez hit one off the top of the wall in left center for a solo home run.

Aldo Osuna pitched the final two innings, holding the Blue Rocks scoreless to keep his ERA at 0.00.

El Paso starter Carlos Vargas (1-1) left the game in the fifth after getting hit in the left leg with a line drive. To add insult to injury, he was charged with the loss.

In the Sunday afternoon finale, the Blue Rocks scored seven runs in a wild second inning and made that stand up as they cruised to a 7-1 victory. Geraldo Parra went 7 2/3 innings, allowing just a solo home run to Emmitt Hampton in the bottom of the eighth inning. He allowed four hits while striking out four and walking just one.

El Paso battled around in the second, scoring a season high seven runs in the inning. Shuheii Talahashi was at it again, lining an RBI double. He went 2 for 5 with a run scored and had a huge series for El Paso.

Robert Francis (1-2) took the loss for Flagstaff, but manager Bud Black showed some confidence in him, allowing him to work past the second. He went 7 1/3 innings, and if you take out that brutal second inning, he allowed just three other hits and no runs.

Samuel Espinoza finished off the final 1 2/3 innings to close out the miserable afternoon.

Flagstaff (8-7) will welcome the Austin Fire Frogs to town starting tomorrow evening for a three game series to close out the home stand.

Around the League: ML West leading Colorado Springs scored five times in the bottom of the ninth on Sunday afternoon, capped off by a Donnell Marcus grand slam, as they stunned Santa Fe 7-5. Struggling San Diego got a gem from Matt Morales as he tossed a complete game two-hitter, striking out ten as the Seals defeated Tucson 4-0.

          APRIL 18-20: AUSTIN (10-9) @ FLAGSTAFF (9-9)
          Stadium: Autozone Park (Capacity: 9,486)

          April 18: Fire Frogs 4, Hops 3 (10)
          April 19: Hops 2, Fire Frogs 1 (10)
          April 20: Fire Frogs 13, Hops 7

Flagstaff, AZ (AP) - The Austin Fire Frogs came into Flagstaff and left with a series victory as they took two of three from the Hops to close out the home stand.

The Fire Frogs hit four solo home runs in the opener with the biggest coming in the top of the tenth as Todd Marshall homered off of Pedro Macias to put Austin in front to stay as they won 4-3.

Todd Marshall opened the game with a lead off home run off of Shoe Lace O’Tying. It was Marshall’s third on the season.

Flagstaff would grab the lead in the second on a two-run double from catcher Rafael Perez.

The Fire Frogs would get solo home runs from Blip Sanders (3rd) and Ted Martinez (5th) in the fourth and fifth innings to retake the lead 3-2.

The Hops would tie it back up in the bottom half of the sixth on a solo shot from Art Mason, his fourth on the season.

It would stay that way until the tenth when Marshall homered to left with two outs off of Macias. Macias took the loss (1-2). He tossed two innings and the only base runner that he allowed was Marshall. Shoe Lace O’Yuing went eight innings, allowing three runs on five hits.

Connor Hart (1-0) earned the win out of the pen for Austin. He pitched 2 1/3 innings in relief of Prado and did not allow a hit. Kent McAlpin worked the tenth to earn his sixth save.

On Tuesday evening, the Hops used some late game heroics to defeat the Fire Frogs 2-1 as they walked it off in extra innings. Robbie Westbrook homered with two-outs in the bottom of the tenth to win it for Flagstaff and they avoided falling below .500 for the first time this season.

This was a pitchers duel, but neither starter would figure in the decision. Eveland for Austin pitched seven shutout innings, scattering four hits. He struck out three and walked two. Ryan Pressley went seven innings for Flagstaff, allowing one run on four hits. He struck out six and walked just one.

The lone Austin run came in the fourth inning on a Luke Jordan solo home run to left.

Flagstaff waited until the bottom of the ninth to respond. Rodney Millar hit an absolute bomb to left center with one-out in the bottom of the ninth to send this one to extra innings.

Oliver Benedict (1-0) picked up the win, throwing three shutout innings in relief of Pressley. Owen Bonds (1-1) took the loss for Austin as they fell to (9-8).

Arturo Mardones was an absolute beast on defense in this one, robbing the Fire Frogs of at least three base hits with his slick fielding and rocket arm.

In the finale, the Fire Frogs scored seven times in the top of the first and never looked back as they cruised to a 13-7 victory. They hit five home runs in the game and ten in the three game series as the long ball continues to haunt Flagstaff pitching in the opening month of the season.

Corey Barton and Sean McKenzie each hit two home runs with Barton driving in four runs to pace the victory. The teams combined for 20 runs, 32 hits and six home runs.

Steve Hubbard (0-2) took the loss but he lasted just three batters, allowing three base hits. He left with shoulder tightness with no one out in the first and the bases loaded. The Hops bullpen was really not up to the task in this one as four relievers combined to allow 10 run son 15 hits.

Flagstaff (9-9) will now head south to Goodyear for a three game series with the Jack Rabbits (9-10) beginning on Friday evening before heading to Austin for a four game series.

Around the League: Dan Moore of the Glendale Desert Dogs fanned 11 in 6 1/3 innings on Monday evening as Glendale slipped past Phoenix 4-3. First baseman Randy Klaus of the Forth Worth Kings hit four home runs and drove in five in a 13-0 victory over the Salt Lake Chukars on Wednesday afternoon. He now leads the Mountain League with eight home runs.

            ML_East

After the first few weeks of the inaugural Intermountain Baseball League, I thought I would give you a look at some of the stars playing in the league. We will start with the Mountain League East.

Manny Vega, the 26-year-old centerfielder for West Texas with a 96 OVR rating has struggled out of the gate, hitting just .212 with no home runs and just four RBIs in 20 games for the East leading Bison. Vega was drafted 15th overall.

Lincoln Farrington, the 29-year-old starter for Amarillo is off to a bit of a rough start also. He is (1-2) with an ERA of 4.74 in four starts for the Honey Hunters. He has allowed five home runs, while striking out 20 and walking 12.

Forth Worth’s Gabriel Carmona has been solid on the bump for the Kings in his first four starts. He is (1-1) with an ERA of 0.98 with 18 strikeouts and just five walks for the second place Kings.

Luke Jordan has lived up to all the hype for Austin after being selected third overall. He has five home runs and 10 RBIs to go along with four stolen bases and a .305 average for the Fire Frogs.

Gus Woodson, selected 21st overall, has been excellent for the San Antonio Javelinas in his four starts, going (2-0) with an ERA of 0.27 and WHIP of 0.88. He has 23 K’s and 10 walks for a San Antonio team that has struggled out of the gate.

            ML_Central

Moving onto the Mountain League Central...

Lincoln Graham, the top pick for Santa Fe, has struggled out of the closer role. In nine appearances, he is (0-2) with two blown saves and an ERA of 8.59 in 7.1 innings of work.

Ryne Rodriguez, the 32-year-old veteran starter for Rio Rancho has been solid for the Owlz in his first four outings. He is (2-1) with a respectable ERA of 3.65 and WHIP of 1.18. He has helped the Owlz to a (10-10) start, just two games out of first place.

Catcher Dan Rodriguez, selected 11th overall, of last place Albuquerque has missed most of the season so far after breaking his shin in the opening week. Thomas Estrada has helped the Mariachis overcome an (0-8) start by hitting .369 with two homers and 11 RBIs as the Mariachis have gone 8-3 in their last 11.

Blake Pacinelli, the 25=year-old right fielder for Roswell, is second in the Mountain League with seven home runs and is slugging .609 in the first three weeks of the season to help Roswell to a (10-7) start, just a half game out of first place.

El Paso’s Bruno De La Cruz has been OK for the first place Blue Rocks. In four starts, he is (2-1) with an ERA of 3.38. He has 15 strikeouts and 10 walks in 26.2 innings. 23-year-old Chinese left fielder Shuheii Takahashi has been the spark plug for the Blue Rocks, hitting .387 with three homers and 14 RBIs to go along with seven stolen bases.

            ML_West

In the Western division of the Mountain League, the Flagstaff Hops have been a bit of a surprise out of the gates, going (9-9) and sitting in third place in a very tough division. They are led by 18-year-old potential star in Robbie Westbrook. He has not disappointed to open the year, hitting .304 with two home runs and five stolen bases while dealing the web gems in the field playing both second base and shortstop.

Juan Caceras, the 27-year-old cebterfielder for Colorado Springs got off to a slow start but has been picking it up in the last week as his average has risen to .262 for the first place Snow Sox. He has three home runs, 10 RBI and three stolen bases.

Second baseman Scottie Hager, the sixth overall pick of St George, is off to a great start, hitting over .300 with three home runs, 12 RBI and three stolen bases for the struggling Archers, who sit in fourth place at (9-11).

Third round selection J.P. Grant, the 28-year-old slugger is off to a slow start for last place Salt Lake. He is hitting .284 with two homers and nine RBIs. Their top pick, catcher Freddie Hewitt is only hitting .203 but has four homers.

34-year-old starter Ken Smith has the Hot Shots off to a quick start, sitting in second place. He is (2-1) with an ERA of 2.13 and WHIP of 1.18 with 19 strikeouts and nine walks in 25.1 innings of work.

            DL_East

Moving over to the Desert League, we will start by looking at some Eastern Division stars.

On the Barnstormers, third baseman Steve Heupel leads a loaded Barnstormers lineup that is off to a slow start as they sit at (7-11) and are in last place. Heupel is hitting .314 with three homers and 10 RBI.

Left fielder Vlad Bruno has struggled a bit for Chandler. He is hitting .288 but has just one homer and eight RBIs and maybe most surprisingly is just one stolen base for arguably the fastest guy in the entire league.

Mesa’s John Nichols has exceeded even the high expectations placed on him after he was selected eighth overall. He is hitting over .300 with three home runs and 15 RBIs, plus five steals in leading the Solar Sox into first place.

Rafael Ortiz, the second round pick of the Salt River Rafters, is off to a solid start, going (2-2) with an ERA of 3.71 and WHIP of 1.16. The surprising Rafters sit in second in the Desert East .

Freddie Crawford, the 29-year-old closer, an undrafted free agent, has been fantastic for Tucson. In seven appearances, he has five saves and a 1.29 ERA with seven strikeouts and one walk, allowing just four hits.

            DL_Central

Jeff Jankowitsch, the 31-year-old catcher, leads the Phoenix Firebirds. He is hitting .313 with foru homers and seven runs driven in on 64 at bats as Phoenix has opened the campaign (11-7).

The oldest player selected in the opening round of the inaugural IBL draft was Cristobal Gonzalez. The Glendale Desert Dogs wanted a veteran starter to lead the team and he has done just that. He is (3-1) with an ERA of 4.50 in 20 innings of work. But the Desert Dogs are in first place and second in team ERA at 3.04.

Goodyear is lead by 29-year-old closer Fred Michael. In seven appearances, he has yet to allow a run and has allowed just two hits in picking up six saves, second in the IBL. He has 11 strikeouts and just one walk.

Third baseman Ray Landry leads Scottsdale. The 33-year-old is hitting just .151 with one homer and 10 RBIs in 73 at bats through 18 games. 18-year-old phenom pitcher Pat Mehnutzak has struggled also, going (0-1) with an ERA north of 5.50 in 22.1 innings of work for (7-11) Scorpions.

Maury Keith, the 34-year-old closer for last-place Surprise, has struggled some to open the season. He has six appearances with four saves and one hold, but his ERA is 4.76, allowing three runs and six hits in 5.2 innings of relief.

            DL_West

Rounding out our early season summary is the Desert League West. Yuma have the worst record in the Desert League at (5-13). They are led by 28-year-old starter Frank Reyna, picked ninth overall. He has an ERA of 3.33, WHIP of 1.19 and a (1-2) record. He has 17 strikeouts and has walked just six.

Las Vegas Nuggets’ Enrique Lima has been huge for the top ranked club in the IBL. He is hitting .321 with five homers and 11 RBIs for the (14-5) Nuggets.

The top overall pick in the inaugural IBL draft, Matt Campbell has looked good for the San Diego Seals, despite an (0-2) record. He has struck out 29 and walked only four in 26.2 innings of work. His ERA is 3.38 with a WHIP of 1.01. This guy is a flame thrower hitting over 100 mph multiple times each start.

Third baseman Sean Pressley, fourth overall pick of the Henderson Silver Knights, is off to a relatively slow start, hitting just .239 with two homers and seven RBI in 67 at bats. His OPS of .756 is fifth on Henderson, , who currently sit at (8-10), five and a half games back of Las Vegas.

18-year-old Steve Willis has lived up to the hype of a potential ace for Long Beach in the early going. He has an ERA of 2.03 and WHIP of 1.39 in four starts for a pretty decent Surf Dawgs club.

              APR 22-24: FLAGSTAFF (10-11) @ GOODYEAR (12-11)
Stadium: Banner Health Field (Capacity: 8,816)

              April 22: Jack Rabbits 3, Hops 0
              April 23: Hops 6, Jack Rabbits 1
              April 24: Jack Rabbits 4, Hops 3 (13)

Goodyear, AZ (AP) - The Goodyear Jack Rabbits took two of three from the Hops as they opened a seven game road trip. Sunday afternoon, on getaway day, the Jack Rabbits pulled it out in 13 innings to win the series.

The Goodyear Jack Rabbits used four pitchers to combine on a three-hit shutout in the opener of the three game series as they defeated Flagstaff 3-0. Home runs from Phil Newell and Kenny Peters provided the offense for the Jack Rabbits as they moved back over .500.

Flagstaff just could not get anything going offensively in this one. Corbin McCarthy improved to (4-1) on the season as he tossed six shutout innings, allowing three hits, while striking out seven and walking two. The Goodyear bullpen tossed no hit ball over the final three innings with Tracy Vote picking up save number two.

Sam Herzog (1-2) was the hard luck loser for Flagstaff. He was excellent, tossing seven innings and allowing two runs on six hits. He struck out eight and did not issue a walk.

On Saturday afternoon, Emmitt Hampton hit two home runs and drove in five as the Hops defeated the Jack Rabbits 6-1. Hampton homered in the second and sixth innings and that is all that Robert Francis would need to pick up his second win.

Francis (2-2) pitched a solid six innings, allowing just one run on five hits. He struck out two and did not issue a walk. Oliver Benedict and Samuel Espinoza allowed just one hit over the final three innings to close this one out.

Art Mason got things going in the very first inning as he homered to left off of Gilberto Guzman. It was Mason’s fifth on the season. Hampton’s two homers gave him three on the year.

Goodyear would get their lone run on back-to-back doubles from Joe Nelson and Luis Mota in the bottom of the second inning.

In the finale, the Jack Rabbits won a marathon, pulling out a 4-3 victory in 13 innings. Reid Hoffman’s double in the bottom of the thirteenth, brought home Luis Mota with the game winning run as Goodyear moved back over .500 and Flagstaff fell one game under .500.

The Hops grabbed a 2-0 lead in this one early on with an RBI single from Donnie Roland and a solo home run from Roberto Geronimo.

Shoe-Lace O’Tying looked good on the mound early on, but ran into some trouble in the fifth, giving up back-to-back doubles to Emilio Montalvo and Luis Mota as Goodyear cut the lead to 2-1. In the sixth, he would surrender a two-run shot to Gregory Rice, which gave Goodyear the lead. He would leave after seven innings, trailing 3-2. He struck out nine and walked one, allowing the three runs on just five hits.

The Jack Rabbits (12-11) would hold that lead into the ninth, when Rodney Millar homered to left off of Vote to open the ninth and tie the ball game at 3-3. It was his eighth on the year.

Flagstaff (10-11) never really had a great chance to score in extra inning and the Jack Rabbits would finish them off in the 13th. Taking the loss for the Hops was reliever Peter Gorzelski ((1-1). He worked a perfect 12th inning, but gave up the back-to-back doubles to end it at the start of the 13th.

The Hops will head to Austin for a four game series with the Fire Frogs starting on Monday evening.

Around the League: Roswell’s Parks tossed a two-hit shutout of Silver Bullets on Friday night in Santa Fe.

                APR 25-28: FLAGSTAFF (11-14) @ AUSTIN (15-10)
                Stadium: Dell Diamond (Capacity: 11,868)

                April 25: Fire Frogs 1, Hops 0
                April 26: Fire Frogs 6, Hops 1
                April 27: Hops 1, Fire Frogs 0
                April 28: Fire Frogs 2, Hops 1 (17)

Austin, TX (AP) - Flagstaff is in an offensive slump and that continued as they dropped three of four to Austin to end the road trip. They scored just three runs in the four games and scored just 12 on the seven game road trip.

In the opener, the Fire Frogs defeated the Hops 1-0 in a classic pitchers duel. Pat Eveland and Ryan Pressley battled with each going into the eighth inning before Austin was able to finally score.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, Todd Marshall singled to right with two outs. He then stole second and scored on a bloop single to right by Chris Richardson. That spelled the end for Ryan Pressley. He went 7 2/3 innings, allowing that lone run and scattering seven hits. He struck out three and walked two as he fell to (0-2).

Pat Eveland went 7 1/3 innings for the Fire Frogs, allowing four hits and striking out four, while walking just one. Connor Hart (2-0) picked up the win in relief, getting the final two outs in the eighth. Kent McAplin tightroped through the ninth, stranding runners at the corners as he struck out Kiko Pressley to end the game and pick up his eighth save in eight chances.

Robbie Westbrook left the game in the first inning, feeling tightness in his quad. He will be evaluated this evening and his status for Tuesday is unknown.

On Tuesday evening, the Fire Frogs used a four run sixth inning to pull away for a rather easy 6-1 victory. Ted Martinez went 2 for 3 with a double, home run and three RBIs to help pace Austin to the victory.

Flagstaff grabbed an early lead in the second inning on a Donnie Roland RBI single up the middle that score Roberto Geronimo. But Flagstaff felt like they left some runs out there in both the first and second inning with some base running blunders, and a 1-0 lead felt very unsatisfying.

Austin would take the lead in the third on a Todd Marshall two run home run, to put them up 2-1.

Steve Hubbard (0-3) would make it into the sixth before giving way to Oliver Benedict with two outs and a runner on first. Benedict could not close out the inning and the Fire Frogs blew the game open. Blip Sanders doubled home Barton. Willy Benavides walked and then Ted Martinez homered. All of the sudden it was 6-1 and the Hops were in trouble.

Jacob Benedict (2-1) would earn the win for Austin, going seven innings and allowing one run on nine hits. He walked one and struck out one, but worked out of jams in the first three innings that really could have changed the outcome in this one. Adam Novak came out of the bullpen and pitched two perfect innings to close out the Hops.

The Hops offensive woes continued on Wednesday evening, but they were able to get great pitching as they pulled out a 1-0 victory over the Fire Frogs to break their three game losing streak. An Oscar Aleman sacrifice fly in the ninth was the game’s lone run as both teams each managed just four hits in a swiftly played game.

Sam Herzog did not get a decision, but was great on the mound for the Hops. He went seven innings, allowing no runs and just three hits. He struck out three and walked one, and twice left runners stranded on third base.

Pedro Macias (2-2) picked up the win after pitching the eighth. Vic Miller worked the ninth and after giving up a leadoff single, worked his way out to pick up his third save in four opportunities.

Shoe-Lace O’Tying was inserted into the lineup as a DH and picked up his first career hit, a triple in the eighth inning. Manager Bud Black said that O’Tying has been working hard in the cage and he felt like he deserved the chance today.

The Hops offense has gone ice cold on this road trip, managing just 11 runs in the first six games of the trip, scoring zero or one in four of the six games. The trip concludes on Thursday afternoon.

The finale was a seventeen-inning marathon on getaway day, and it ended in misery as Corey Barton homered in the bottom of the seventeenth inning to win it for Austin, 2-1. Barton homered twice, accounting for both Fire Frog runs on a cold rainy Thursday afternoon in the Texas capital.

Flagstaff (11-14) took the lead all the way back in the first inning on a Roberto Geronimo RBI single that drove home Robbie Westbrook. Westbrook had a game, going 5 for 7 with a walk and three stolen bases. The Hops would steal eight bases in the game.

Corey Barton was about the only offense for Austin. He homered in the seventh off of Flagstaff starter Robert Francis to tie the game at 1-1. Then hit the game winner in the 17th.

Flagstaff had multiple chances to score more runs but could not come through with men in scoring position. They left 13 men on in scoring position in the loss.

Adding insult to injury, centerfielder Art Mason was injured and had to leave the game. It was a shoulder injury and he will be evaluated when the team returns to Flagstaff.

The Hops will return home to take on Santa Fe in a three game weekend series and then will host San Antonio.

Around the League: Fort Worth hit three home runs and scored eight runs in the top of the 11th inning to defeat Roswell 9-1. Mike Rexman blasted three home runs and drove in six runs in Mesa’s 11-2 victory over Gilbert. The Solar Sox hit seven home runs in the game.

Notes: Art Mason has shoulder inflammation and was placed on the Injured List. The team has recalled outfielder Grant Mitchell from Triple-A Albuquerque.

                  May 1: Silver Sox 6, Hop 4 (11)

Flagstaff, AZ (AP) - The Flagstaff Hops dropped two of three to the last place Santa Fe Silver Bullets at AutoZone Park in downtown Flagstaff over the weekend. They blew a late four run lead in the finale as they continue to struggle along in the early going of the season.

Flagstaff’s offensive woes continued on Friday night as they returned home to open a six game home stand as they dropped a 5-1 decision to Santa Fe. Matt Price was dealing for the Silver Bullets, tossing 7 2/3 innings and allowing just one run on four hits while striking out six and walking only one.

They would go up 3-0 in the sixth on an Emerson King two-run home run to right. Sergio Sierra would blast a moon shot to left and it was 4-0 Silver Bullets after six. Mark Griffin would single home Azerod in the seventh to make it 5-0.

Flagstaff would finally get on the board in the bottom of the eighth as Robbie Westbrook homered to right. It was his third on the season. But Flagstaff could muster little else, managing just four hits in the game and scoring one run for the fourth consecutive game.

The Hops are now (3-9) in their last 12 after a promising start to the season. They are 25th in batting average and 24th in runs scored. The pitching has been good enough to win most of these games if they had some support.

The Hops closed out April with a 4-3 victory over the Santa Fe Silver Bullets. Ryan Pressley picked up his first professional win as he went seven innings, allowing three runs on nine hits, while striking out seven and walking none.

Flagstaff would get all of their runs in a four run fifth inning. Skyler Lyons tripled to open the inning and scored on a Kiko Pressley excuse me infield single. Robbie Westbrook hit a sacrifice fly to score Rafael Perez, who had reached on a hit by pitch. Emmitt Hampton doubled home Pressley and Roberto Geronimo grounded out to score Mitchell.

The Silver Bullets made it interesting scoring twice in the top half of the sixth to cut the lead to 4-3, but the Flagstaff bullpen shut down any comeback hopes with Pedro Macias and Vic Miller getting the final six outs to secure the victory.

In the finale, Steve Hubbard tossed a gem, leaving the game up 4-0 after six innings, but the bullpen absolutely fell apart as the Silver Bullets rallied for a 6-4 extra innings victory.

Flagstaff jumped out to a 4-0 lead thanks to a three home runs. Grant Mitchell hit the first pitch on the bottom of the first into the grassy berm in left to put the Hops up 1-0. Arturo Mardones and Robbie Westbrook then hit homers in the fifth to make it 4-0.

Flagstaff appeared in their way to a series win until the bullpen imploded.

Emerson King and Jamaal Crosby each hit two home runs for Santa Fe. King hit a solo shot in the seventh to cut the lead to 4-1. Crosby then hit a two run shot in the ninth off of closer Vic Miller to cut the lead to 4-3. Dezi Azerod would single home Emerson King to tie the game at 4-4 and send it into extra innings.

In the eleventh, King and Crosby hit back-to-back homers to open the inning off fo reliever Pedro Macias and Ricky Meija came in to lock down his first save as Santa Fe left with the series victory.

Flagstaff (12-16) will have tomorrow off before hosting San Antonio (17-12), who sit a half game out of first in the ML East.

                      May 3-5: SAN ANTONIO (18-14) @ FLAGSTAFF (14-17)
                      Stadium: AutoZone Park (Capacity: 9,486)

                      May 3: Hops 5, Javelinas 4
                      May 4: Javelinas 6, Hops 3
                      May 5: Hops 5, Javelinas 3

Flagstaff, AZ (AP) - The Flagstaff Hops took two of three from the red hot San Antonio Javelinas to end the home stand. The offense appears to be awakening from their slumber and the big bats are coming to life as the season heats up.

In the opener, the Hops jumped out to a big lead then held on for a 5-4 victory over the Javelinas. Rodney Millar and Roberto Geronimo each homered for the Hops in the series opener.

Flagstaff would grab a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a Roberto Geronimo home run to left that snuck just inside the foul pole. San Antonio would respond in the top of the third with back-to-back home runs off of Sam Herzog to take the lead 2-1. It was Greg Hunter with his third and Brian Gonzalez with his sixth.

The Hops immediately retook the lead in the bottom half with RBI singles from Grant Mitchell and Donnie Roland. They would extend the lead to 5-2 in the fourth on a solo home run from Rodney Millar and a sacrifice fly from Arturo Mardones.

A T.J. Hart RBI double would cut the lead to 5-3 in the fifth inning and that would spell the end for starter Sam Herzog, who would pick up the win. Herzog (2-2) pitched 5 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on eight hits. He struck out three and walked one.

The Javelinas would cut into the deficit even further in the top of the eighth, but they could have tied the game. Kosuki Matsui doubled after a Sam Morgan single, but Morgan was thrown out at the plate (8-6-2). Zach Lamb would score Matsui on an RBI double with two outs, but Peter Gorzelski would get Greg Hunter to line out to center to end the inning.

In the ninth, the Javelinas were setup to tie the game or even take the lead off of Aldo Osuna. Gonzalez opened the inning with an infield single. Palmeiro tried to sacrifice him to second but he reached and they had runners at first and second with no outs. T.J. Hart would line out to left center, and Grant Mitchell then threw out Gonzalez attempting to tag up and get to third. Palmiero was then thrown out trying to steal second to end the ballgame. Osuna would pick up his first save.

The loss ended San Antonio’s season high six game winning streak.

On a cold and snowy Wednesday evening, the Javelinas rallied for a 6-3 victory to even the series. San Antonio scored runs in the final five innings to rally from an early deficit and pick up the win.

Flagstaff would grab a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning thanks to a two-run home run from Robbie Westbrook, his fifth on the season. They would make it 3-1 in the bottom of the fifth thanks to a solo shot from Rafael Perez.

But the bullpen could not make that lead hold up. The Javelinas got a Sam Morgan home run in the sixth and a Brian Gonzalez two-out RBI single in the seventh to tie the ball game.

Miguel Ascencio came on to pitch in the eight for Flagstaff and proceeded to give up three straight singles that produced the go ahead run and then a Kiko Pressley throwing error led to an additional run as San Antonio took a 5-3 lead. T.J. Hart would add a solo home run in the ninth for the Javelinas as they evened the series.

Oliver Benedict was charged with a blown save, allowing two runs, and Ascencio (2-1) took the loss after a strong start from Robert Francis. He went five innings, allowing one run on seven hits while striking out four.

San Antonio ace, Sam Woodson went 6 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on five hits. He struck out eight and walked one, but was not involved in the decision. John Smith worked the ninth to pick up his eighth save.

In the finale, the Hops rallied for a 5-3 victory behind a nice pitching performance from rookie Shoe-Lace O’Tying. Roberto Geronimo homered and tripled, driving in two runs and scoring twice to help lead the offense.

Flagstaff (14-17) would grab a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a Roberto Geronimo bomb to left center that landed on top of the warehouse just past the trees.

The Javelinas (18-14) would grab the lead in the top of the third on back-to-back RBI doubles from T.J. Hart and Emil Palmiero.

In the bottom of the fourth, Flagstaff would retake the lead for good. Donnie Roland doubled down the right field line with one out. Roberto Geronimo then tripled into the right field corner to score Roland and tie the ballgame at 2-2. Rodney Millar would hit a line drive single to center, scoring Geronimo, and giving Flagstaff the lead.

They would add a run in the seventh when Rodney Miller crushed one over the wall in left to make it 4-2. After T.J. Hart homered to right in the top of the eighth to cut the Hops lead to one, Robbie Westbrook laced an RBI single in the bottom half to give the Hops a two run cushion heading into the ninth.

Vic Miller came on and he didn’t make things easy. After getting the first out, he gave up a singled and walked a batter, moving the tying run to second. But Miller would get Hunter to fly out to center and Gonzalez to ground out to end the ball game.

Flagstaff will now hit the road to face a pair of Western Division rivals. They will travel to Prescott (15-17) and Salt Lake (11-20) for a six game road trip.

Around the League: Centerfielder Josh Carroll hit two home runs and drove in six as Prescott destroyed Amarillo 16-0. Javy Gonzalez homered in the 13th inning as Salt River outlasted the San Diego Seals 11-10. Prescott scored four times in the ninth to rally past Amarillo 8-7. Albuquerque’s Alex Sbarbori struck out 11 and allowed just four hits in a 2-0 victory over Goodyear.

Prescott, AZ (AP) - The Flagstaff Hops opened up their road trip by taking two of three from division rival Prescott at Dignity Health Park. After a tough 2-0 loss in the opener, the Hops were able to take the last two to move ahead of Prescott in the Mountain League Western division standings.

In the opener, the Hot Shots got a great pitching performance from Dave Powers and some timely offense from Matt Olson in a 2-0 victory over the Hops.

Matt Olson hit a sacrifice fly in the sixth, to score Darren Gomes. He then added a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth to add some insurance.

Ryan Pressley (1-3) was the hard luck loser in this one, tossing six innings and 116 pitches, allowing just one run on three hits. He struck out six and walked three.

The Hops outhit the Hot Shots 6-5 in a swiftly played game in Prescott. Dave Powers (4-2) picked up the win, tossing seven innings, allowing five hits and striking out five while not issuing any walks. Xavier Doyle picked up his 11th save, working the ninth.

On Saturday evening the teams combined for two grand slams, but it was Flagstaff that came away with the 8-5 victory. Robbie Westbrook’s grand slam in the seventh proved to be the difference for the Hops as they pulled out a much needed win.

Flagstaff would grabbed a 2-0 lead in the third inning on a two-run double from Rafael Perez.

A Matt Olson RBI single in the bottom of the third would get Prescott on the board.

Oscar Aleman would homer in the sixth to put the Hops up by two, and then Robbie Westbrook had the big blow, a grand slam in the seventh to extend the Flagstaff lead to 7-1. They would add a run in the eighth on a Josh Ortega RBI double.

The bullpen was solid until the ninth as normally reliable Pedro Macias, who has struggled lately, came on and gave up a lead off single and two walks. Then dished up a grand slam to Noah Wilson to cut the Flagstaff lead to 8-5. Manager Bud Black would leave in Macias to get the final two outs, but he had a rocky inning.

Steve Hubbard (1-3) picked up his first win on the year, going six innings and allowing one run on five hits. He struck out seven and walked two. Jimmy Campenella (0-4) was saddled with the loss for Prescott. He went 4 1/3 innings, allowing just two earned runs on six hits. He struck out eight and walked one.

In the Sunday afternoon finale, the Hops got a huge two-out, two-run home run from Rodney Millar in the top of the ninth inning to pull out a 3-1 victory.

Sam Herzog was excellent again on the bump for Flagstaff, but he would not get a decision as he left in a tie ball game. He went 7 1/3 innings, allowing one run on six hits. He struck out four and did not issue any walks. Miguel Ascencio would get the last two outs in the eighth to pick up the win, as he improved to (3-1). Vic Miller worked the ninth, and allowed a two-out double, but struck out the side to earn his sixth save.

Flagstaff (16-18) will now head to Salt Lake City to take on the last place Chukars (13-21) for a three game series beginning on Monday evening.

Around the League: Centerfielder Josh Carroll hit two home runs and drove in six as Prescott destroyed Amarillo 16-0. Blake Pacinelli hit three home runs and drove in all six runs for the Aliens as Roswell beat Salt Lake, 6-5. West Texas’ Manny Vega hit two home runs and drove in seven in a victory over Rio Rancho, 13-0. Glendale’s John Clarkson tossed a one-hit shutout as the Desert Dogs defeated Tucson 7-0. May 9-11: FLAGSTAFF (18-19) @ SALT LAKE (14-23)
                          Stadium: Deseret Field (Capacity: 6,860)

                          May 9: Chukars 5, Hops 4
                          May 10: Hops 4, Chukars 0
                          May 11: Hops 13, Chukars 1

Salt Lake City, UT (AP) - The suddenly hot Flagstaff Hops took two of three from last place Salt Lake to move closer to first place in the ML West. They outscored the Chukars 21-6 in the three game series to end the road trip at (4-2).

On Monday evening, the Chukars took the opener 5-4 thanks to some late inning heroics as Salt Lake scored twice in the bottom of the eighth to take the lead.

Both teams got off to a quick start with the wind blowing out at Deseret Field in downtown Salt Lake City. Robbie Westbrook would homer in the top of the first to put the Hops up 1-0. Pablo Gomes would double and score in the bottom half to tie the ballgame for the Chukars.

A Forrest Owen RBI single in the second, drove home Rodney Millar to put Flagstaff back in front in the second. But in the bottom half, Salt Lake responded. This time it was a Derek Hills solo home run. The Chukars would take the lead in the bottom of the third inning on a Hideo Yoshida solo home run to left.

Forrest Owen would come through again for the Hops in the fourth as he lined a two-run single down into the left field corner to help Flagstaff retake the lead at 4-3. It would stay that way all the way into the eighth.

David Rosas homered to right center to open the inning, off of reliever Oliver Benedict. Adolfo Villarreal would then triple and score on a Pablo Gomes RBI single to put Salt Lake in front.

Flagstaff opened the ninth with a leadoff single from Donnie Roland. Arturo Mardones came on to run, but was thrown out trying to steal second, pretty much ending the Hops hopes of a comeback.

Emmett Franco would get the save for the Chukars. Jay Huseby (1-0) picked up the win, pitching the eighth. Oliver Benedict (1-1) took the loss for the Hops. Robert Francis went the first six innings, leaving with the lead. He allowed three runs on six hits, striking out two.

On Tuesday evening, rookie Shoe-Lace O’Tying tossed a complete game three-hit shutout as the Hops defeated the Chukars 4-0. A Roberto Geronimo home run to open the fifth was the only run that O’Tying would need in a swiftly played game on a cold night in Salt Lake City.

Geronimo broke a scoreless tie to open the fifth inning with a long home run to left off of Virgil Wray. Kiko Pressly would add a two-run single and Arturo Mardones followed with an RBI double as Flagstaff built a 4-0 lead.

That was all that O’Tying would need as he had his best start of the season. He allowed three hits and struck out two, while walking one. He also got Salt Lake to bounce into two double plays. He efficiently threw only 94 pitches in tossing his first complete game.

Larry Butler had two of the three hits for the Chukars in the loss.

In the finale, the Hops scored runs in six of the nine innings on their way to an easy 13-1 victory. Ryan Pressley tossed a complete game, allowing just one run on three hits to pick up his second win on the season.

Flagstaff (18-19) hit four home runs and had nine extra base hits, including three triples on Wednesday afternoon. Arturo Mardones went 3 for 5 with a home run and three RBIs to lead the offense.

The 13 runs and 18 hits were both season highs for Flagstaff.

The lone blemish on Ryan Pressley’s afternoon was a seventh inning solo home run from Larry Butler, who had two of the Chukars three hits last night. They only had six hits over the final two games of the series.

Flagstaff will return home for a nine game home stand that starts on Friday night against the DL Central’s Scottsdale Scorpions.

Around the League: St. George blew a 6-0 lead at home against El Paso, but rallied for a 7-6 victory in extra innings thanks to an Angle Montes walk off home run in the 11th inning.

Flagstaff, AZ (AP) - The Flagstaff Hops lost two of three to the last place Scottsdale Scorpions in a weekend series at AutoZone Park. The Scorpions won the opener with a late rally and won the finale with a home run in extra innings as Flagstaff failed to get back to .500 again.

The Scorpions opened the weekend series with a 4-2 victory over the Hops. Justin Gellman was the main reason that Scottsdale pulled out the opener as he homered in the sixth and then broke a 2-2 tie with a two-run double in the top of the eighth to put the Scorpions ahead for good.

Scottsdale starter Arellano was bringing the heat, hitting over 100 mph several times as he went 6 1/3 innings. He had a shutout going until Rodney Millar hit a two-run blast off of him in the seventh to tie the ballgame. Arellano struck out ten and did not issue a walk.

Justin Gellman homered in the sixth to put the Scorpions up 2-0, then hit a two-run double in the eighth with two-outs that was inches from being caught by Rodney Millar in right.

Charles Sato came on in the ninth and walked Oscar Aleman to open the inning, but would get three straight fly outs to earn his 11th save.

Oliver Benedict (1-2) took the loss in relief of Steve Hubbard. Hubbard pitched six innings, allowing two run son seven hits while striking out six and walking one. Benedict worked a perfect seventh, but gave up a leadoff single and walk in the eighth before surrendering Gellman’s two-run double.

Millar’s seventh inning home run was his 12th on the season.

On Saturday evening the Hops brought out the big sticks, smacking three home runs in a 9-2 victory. Roberto Geronimo hit two home runs and drove in three to help lead the way as Flagstaff is now to within one game of .500.

The Hops would break this one open early on with a five run third inning capped off by a bases clearing double from Oscar Aleman. Roberto Geronimo would add a two-run home run in the fifth to extend the lead to 7-2. He would add a solo shot in the seventh to move to the top of the Mountain League with his 14th home run. Rodney Millar would get in on the fun with a solo shot in the eighth, his 13th on the season, as Flagstaff cruised to the win.

Sam Herzog (3-2) was excellent again, allowing just two runs on three hits in six innings of work. All three hits came in a two-run fifth inning for Scottsdale. He struck out six and walked just one. Samuel Espinoza and Mark Wirth were perfect in three innings of relief.

Jaime Pacheco (3-2) took the loss for Scottsdale, lasting just 2 1/3 innings and surrendering five runs on six hits. He struck out three and walked one.

In the Sunday afternoon matinee, the Scorpions overcame a late Hops rally and won it 4-2 in twelve innings. Ray Landry’s two run home run off of Peter Gorzelski in the 12th was the difference as Scottsdale took two of three from Flagstaff.

Antonio Pena hit a two-run home run in the second inning to give Scottsdale the early lead.

Robert Francis once again pitched good enough to keep Flagstaff in the game, as he went six innings, allowing the two runs on six hits. He struck out just one and did not walk a batter. The bullpen would pitch the final six innings, allowing only one hit, the Landry home run in the twelfth.

Flagstaff (19-21) picked a run in the seventh on a Rodney Millar sacrifice fly. Oscar Aleman came through with a huge two-out RBI single in the eighth to tie the ball game at 2-2. They had a great chance to win it in the tenth, loading the bases, but Oscar Aleman grounded into a fielder’s choice to get the Scorpions out of trouble.

In the bottom of the twelfth, Robbie Westbrook came to the plate with two on and two out with a chance to tie or win the ball game, but he flew out to deep right center to end it.

Flagstaff will host Salt Lake (15-25) in a three game series starting tomorrow evening with ace Shoe-Lace O’Tying taking the bump.

Around the League: Salt River’s Rafael Ortiz tossed a complete game four-hitter with six strikeouts in a 4-0 victory over Tucson. Long Beach’s Jack Gonzalez hit two home runs and drove in five in an 8-6 victory over the San Diego Seals. Austin scored seven times in the top of the 14th inning in a wild victory over Colorado Springs 10-8. The teams combined for 12 runs in the 14th inning and there were 15 pitchers used in the game. Corey Barton and Sean McKenzie each hit three-run home runs in the 14th innings to help the Fire Frogs pull out the win over the Snow Sox.

San Antonio Javelinas (23-18): The Javelinas are led by starter Gus Woodson, who has been great early on with a (3-1) record and 2.05 ERA with 54 K’s in 66 innings of work. The bullpen could be an issue. 21-year-old shortstop Brian Gonzalez has shown flashes that he may be a superstar.

                              8. Colorado Springs Snow Sox (23-17): The Snow Sox got off to a hot start and have cooled off recently. They are second in runs scored, second in triples and first in home runs (73). Offense is not the issue with this club. They already have six players with at least 20 RBIs. Pitching is the problem, as they are second worst in the league with an ERA of almost five runs per game.

                              9. Austin Fire Frogs (22-19): The Fire Frogs are here because of their great defense and pitching. Connor Hart has been great out of the bullpen, with an ERA of 1.17 and a WHIP under one in 23.0 innings of work.

                              10. El Paso Blue Rocks (23-16): this team loves to run, leading the lead by an impressive margin stolen bases (79). They have three players with at least 13 stolen bases in Brandon Gayle, Shuheii Takahashi and Tommie Bennett. No other team in the Mountain League has a player with more than 11.

                              11. St George Archers (22-19): this team is built on offense and they have six players with at least seven home runs and eight players with at least 18 RBIs. A solid lineup that has few holes in it. Look for this team to be playing in October.

                              12. Mesa Solar Sox (21-20): This team maybe should be ranked a bit higher, but they are just (2-8) in their last ten. Right fielder Garrett Matthews is going to be a problem for Desert League pitchers. He is hitting (.316) with nine home runs, 23 RBIs and 16 stolen bases.

                              13. Tucson Roadrunners (22-19): Next to the Rafters, this is probably the most surprising team in all of the IBL. Veteran starter Steven Pena (5-1, 2.36 ERA) has been fantastic for Tucson early on. The bullpen is a strength and closer Freddie Crawford has been almost unhittable with 14 saves in 15 chances.

                              14. West Texas Bison (19-21): this team has a great offense and it is the pitching that may hold them back. A team ERA of 4.68 leaves them in the bottom five. If they can figure out their pitching, this tem could be a force to reckon with.

                              15. Phoenix Firebirds (21-20): this team is built on veteran pitching with their top four starters all over the age of 29. But their combined record is (14-6) with 172 strikeouts. Veteran centerfielder Keith Morales is having quite a season, hitting (.281) with 14 home runs and 24 RBIs

                              16. Flagstaff Hops (19-21): The Hops have a very good pitching staff and they are a team that hits for power. Their problems are getting men on base as they are last in walks and close to the bottom on OBP. If they can improve on the latter, they may hang around in the Wild Card chase.

                              17. Goodyear Jack Rabbits (19-22): This team has a positive run differential and has a balanced offensive team. The starting pitching is good enough but their bullpen is below average and that is keeping them out of the playoff race.

                              18. Rio Rancho Owlz (19-22): Rio Rancho are led by superstar third baseman Phil Riebow, who leads the team in home runs (10) and RBIs (28). Rookie starter Rollie Flingers has fit nicely in the rotation. This may be a team to watch out for as they don’t have many weaknesses.

                              19. Prescott Hot Shots (18-23): The Hot Shots have struggled despite some lofty expectations coming into the season. Pitching has been a big problem, mainly allowing walks, as they are last in the league, allowing 168 walks in 41 games. They have also committed the third most errors with 22. They are 23rd in hitting which hasn’t helped.

                              20. Surprise Saguaros (19-22): After a hot start the Saguaros have cooled off, sliding down the DL Central standings. Pitching has been the main issue with their starters struggling and the bullpen not much better.

                              21. Henderson Silver Knights (16-25): Despite a poor record, Henderson may be better than people think. They have a positive run differential through 41 games and are led by veteran third baseman Leandro Lugo, who is on the trading block. Lugo has hit 10 home runs and riven in 23 runs, mainly playing DH. Rumors are that they want to move him for prospects with Flagstaff coming up as a logical choice.

                              22. Albuquerque Mariachis (20-21): After an (0-8) start, the Mariachis have been very good. This is a team that doesn’t have much star power, but stays in most games with steady pitching.

                              23. Amarillo Honey Hunters (19-22): This may be a bit low for a team that has been hot as of late, winning seven of ten. Their pitching has been bad, sitting at 27th in ERA and they have given up 60 home runs, 4th worst. They are middle of the road in batting stats which has kept them afloat in the ML Wild Card race.

                              24. Gilbert Barnstormers (18-22): a preseason favorite, things have not gone well in Gilbert so far, and this is mainly due to a putrid offense that has scored only 142 runs (4th worst). The talent is there so we will see if they can turn things around.

                              25. Chandler Chiefs (18-22): The Chiefs have struggled both hitting and pitching. An ERA of 4.64 leaves them near the league bottom and an on base percentage of only .322 leaves them in a tough spot. Rick Singleton has been a bright spot, hitting over .300 with seven home runs and 23 RBIs.

                              26. Santa Fe Silver Bullets (17-24): stuck in a tough division, they don’t do much well. Could be a long season in the high desert.

                              27. San Diego Seals (17-25): a rough start, but this team was young stars in Matt Mulder and first overall pick, 18-year-old superstar Matt Campbell. The future is bright despite a slow start to 2022.

                              28. Scottsdale Scorpions (17-22): Last in hitting with a (.226) average, last in runs (130), last in home runs (36)…..last in the DL Central.

                              29. Salt Lake Chukars (15-25): Pitching is lousy, despite Thor Odinson, who has been great. But he just went on the Injured List with a broken forearm. This team may challenge Yuma for worst in the league.

                              30. Yuma Dust Devils (12-29): Not much has gone right for Yuma. They are in a tough division and their best player, David Silva, is on the injured list. They may stay down in this spot for awhile.

                                May 16-18: SALT LAKE (15-28) @ FLAGSTAFF (22-21)
                                Stadium: AutoZone Park (Capacity: 9,486)

                                May 16: Hops 5, Chukars 2
                                May 17: Hops 1, Chukars 0
                                May 18: Hops 8, Chukars 6

Flagstaff, AZ (AP) - Flagstaff swept Salt Lake in a three game series at AutoZone Park to move back above .500 for the first time since April 19th when they were (9-8). They rallied from a four run deficit in the finale to win and stretch their winning streak to three games.

In the opener, the Hops used a five-run third inning to defeat Salt Lake 5-2. Three home runs in the inning were the difference as the Hops once again have gotten to within a game of .500.

Back-to-back home runs from Emmitt Hampton and Roberto Geronimo got the Hops going in the third. Josh Ortega then blasted a three-run bomb to extend the lead to 5-0 and that was all that Shoe Lace O’Tying would need.

O’Tying (4-1) went seven innings, allowing two runs on seven hits. He struck out eight and did not walk a batter. Miguel Asencio worked the eighth and Vic Miller pitched a perfect ninth, striking out two, to earn his seventh save.

The Chukars only offense came on a two-run double from Adolfo Villarreal in the top of the fifth inning. Virgil Wray (0-5) took the loss, pitching four innings and allowing five runs, only two earned, on eight hits.

On a cold and rainy Tuesday evening the Hops withstood a 90 minute rain/snow delay to defat Salt Lake 1-0. Art Mason’s third inning home run after the delay was the only run of the game as Flagstaff finally got back to .500.

Ryan Pressley started and got through 2 2/3 innings before the game was stopped by the umpires. He had only allowed a walk, but was lifted for reliever Oliver Benedict. Benedict (2-2) tossed 2 1/3 innings, allowing just two hits, but he picked up the win. Aldo Osuna, Mike Gorzelski and Vic Miller finished out the shutout. For Miller, it was his eighth save on the season.

Miller had walked Gomes with one out in the ninth, but he struck out Chavez and then Gomes was thrown out trying to steal second to end the ball game.

In the finale, the Hops scored six times in the bottom of the sixth inning to erase a four run deficit and then won it 8-6 to sweep their division rivals. The Hops hit five home runs in the game including career firsts for both Skyler Lyons and Taylor Snyder.

Salt Lake (15-28) looked like they may avoid the sweep in this one as they scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning to grab a 4-0 lead. Three RBI singles from Hewitt, Hills and Butler helped the Chukars grab a lead that looked great with Matsui tossing a gem on the mound.

But things fell apart in the bottom half. Skyler Lyons led off the inning with his first career home run, a solo shot to left. Oscar Aleman followed that up with a double and Roberto Geronimo reached on an excuse me infield single. Emmitt Hampton then singled home Aleman to cut the Salt Lake lead to 4-2. Donnie Roland singled to center, scoring Geronimo, but Hampton was thrown out at third. Rafael Perez then homered to left to make it 5-4 Hops. Taylor Snyder then stepped up and hit a solo home run to right, his first career home run and the Hops plated their sixth run of the inning.

Art Mason and Roberto Geronimo would hit solo home runs in the seventh to extend the Flagstaff lead to 8-4.

The Chukars would get a couple back in the eighth. J.P. Grant hit a long home run off of Miguel Asencio, and Freddie Hewitt would add an RBI double off of Pedro Macias to cut the Hops lead to 8-6.

Vic Miller came on to work the ninth for the third straight day, and he picked up his third consecutive save. The save was his ninth on the season.

Flagstaff (22-21) will have tomorrow off before hosting the ML East leading Fort Worth Kings (26-19) for a three game weekend series to end the home stand.

Around the League: Chandler gets healthy in a big way as they destroy Yuma 19-5, knocking out 24 hits in the victory. Ervin Cordero went 2 for 5 with a double, home run and five RBIs. El Paso scored four in the bottom of the ninth to tie Albuquerque, but it wasn’t enough as the Mariachis scored three times in the 13th to pull out a 9-6 victory. Colorado Springs defeated Prescott 10-2 on only six base hits as the Hot Shots issued 14 walks. Santa Fe outlasted Glendale in a slugfest, 18-11 as the teams combined for 29 runs on 34 hits. Tommie Bennett hit two home runs including a walk off grand slam, and drove in six, in El Paso’s 7-6 win over Albuquerque.

The Mesa Solar Sox have acquired LF Willy Geronimo from the Scottsdale Scorpions in exchange for starting pitcher Billy Cooper.

The Roswell Aliens have traded reliever David Enriquez to Las Vegas in exchange for starting pitcher Tanner Tully.

Taylor Snyder recorded his first hit, and it was also his first career home run.
