Re: Intermountain Baseball League - Presented by BigJdotcom01

    May 20-22: FORT WORTH (27-21) @ FLAGSTAFF (24-22)
    Stadium: AutoZone Park (Capacity: 9,486)

    May 20: Hops 7, Kings 1
    May 21: Kings 6, Hops 3
    May 22: Hops 6, Kings 5

Flagstaff, AZ (AP) - The Flagstaff Hops closed out their home stand by taking two of three from the ML East leading Fort Worth Kings. This was a matchup of the two best pitching staffs in the IBL, but the offenses and the long ball were the story in this series.

The Hops continued their red-hot baseball in Friday night’s opener as they cruised to a 7-1 victory over the Kings. Oscar Aleman went 4 for 4 with two doubles, and a home run to help pace Flagstaff to their season high fourth consecutive victory.

Fort Worth got out to an early lead in this one, scoring in the top of the first inning off of Sam Herzog. Pablo Feliz led off with a single, stole second and advanced to third on a single to left by Freddie Dominguez. He would score on a Klaus sac fly to make it 1-0.

That lead was short lived as Rodney Millar hit a towering three-run blast in the bottom half of the first off of Fort Worth’s ace Gabriel Carmona. Skyler Lyons would single home Josh Ortega in the fourth to make it 4-1.

Rodney Millar would pick up another RBI in the sixth, hitting a sacrifice fly to right center, scoring Oscar Aleman to make it 5-1. An Art Mason RBI single in the seventh would add another run. Oscar Aleman would homer to left in the eighth to make it 7-1. It was his seventh on the season.

Millar and Aleman would go 6 for 6 in the game with three doubles and two home runs, driving in five of the seven Flagstaff runs.

Sam Herzog (4-2) went seven strong innings, allowing one run on just four hits. He struck out three and walked one. Also Osuna worked the eighth and Pedro Macias pitched the ninth. Macias has struggled lately, but struck out two and did allow a single.

Fort Worth’s ace Gabriel Carmona (5-2) took the loss, lasting just five innings and surrendering four runs on five hits. He struck out four and walked two.

On Saturday evening, the Fort Worth Kings rallied twice late to pull out a 6-3 victory over Flagstaff to snap their four game winning streak. Eddie Francisco’s three run home run in the top of the eighth was the difference for the visitors.

Flagstaff would take a 1-0 lead in the first inning thanks to an Oscar Aleman home run, his eighth on the season. They would extend that lead to 2-0 in the fourth on a Rodney Millar RBI single that scored Roberto Geronimo.

A Randy Klaus solo home run, his 15th, would get Fort Worth on the board in the sixth.

Flagstaff would go to their bullpen to start the seventh with Oliver Benedict coming on in relief of Robert Francis. He gave up a one-out double to Carlisle and then a two-out RBI double to Newman that tied the game at 2-2. It was his third blown save on the season.

Donnie Roland would get that run back in the bottom of the seventh with an opposite field solo shot to put Flagstaff back out in front, 3-2.

But in the eighth, Benedict gave up a leadoff double before being pulled. Cal Velasco then lined a one-out single to left off of Aldo Osuna, allowing Freddie Dominguez to score to tie the ballgame at 3-3. Moran reached on an infield single and then it was Eddie Francisco that unloaded on a hanging slider, hitting it 420 feet to left to put Fort Worth out in front 6-3.

Noah Smallwood would work the ninth for the Kings to pick up his 13th save.

Osuna (1-1) would take the loss out of the bullpen for Flagstaff, giving up three run son three hits in 1/3 of an inning. Neither starter figured in the decision, but both pitched well. Pena went 6 1/3 for Fort Worth, allowing three runs on six hits, while Francis went six innings for the Hops, allowing one run on four hits.

In Sunday afternoon’s finale, the Hops used home runs from Emmitt Hampton and Skyler Lyons to hold off a late Fort Worth rally, 6-5. The win enabled the Hops to finish (6-3) in the nine game home stand, and moved them into second place in the ML West.

The Hops would grab an early lead on a Roberto Geronimo sac fly in the first inning.

A Randy Kraus two-run blast put Fort Worth in front 2-1 in the top of the fourth. It was his 16th on the year, tying him for the league lead. But Skyler Lyons had an answer in the bottom half, hitting a two-out, three-run home run to help Flagstaff retake the lead 4-2.

Emmitt Hampton would add a long home run in the fifth to make it 5-3. The ball was estimated at 458 feet.

An Eddie Francisco RBI double in the top of the sixth would cut into the Hops lead. Francisco had been red hot this series. But once again, the Hops had an answer in the bottom half. This time Kiko Pressley lined an RBI single to center, scoring Josh Ortega to make it 6-3.

Catcher Devin Rivera would hit a home run in the seventh off of Shoe-Lace O’Tying to cut the lead to two. That would be O’Tying’s last batter. He picked up the win to improve to (5-1). He went 7 1/3 innings, allowing four runs on seven hits. He struck out five and walked two.

Vic Miller would come on in the ninth and he made it exciting. He served up a lead off solo home run to P.J. Woodson to cut the lead to 6-5. After getting the next two guys out, Pablo Feliz singled to center and stole second. But Miller got Dominguez to fly out to center to end it as he earned his 10th save.

Flagstaff (24-22) will hit the road for seven games, travelling to Albuquerque (24-23) for three and San Antonio (26-21) for four.

Around the League: El Paso drew seven walks and scored eight runs in the first inning as the Blue Rocks defeated Prescott 9-3.

      May 23-25: FLAGSTAFF (25-24) @ ALBUQUERQUE (26-24)
      Stadium: Isotopes Park (Capacity: 11,684)

      May 23: Hops 10, Mariachis 8
      May 24: Mariachis 4, Hop 3 (10)
      May 25: Mariachis 3, Hops 2

Albuquerque, NM (AP) - The Albuquerque Mariachis took two of three from Flagstaff in a series in which every game was decided in the last at bat. The Hops scored five in the ninth in the opener to win, but the Mariachis would walk off the last two games to win the series.

The Hops rallied with five run sin the top of the ninth to take a wild opener 10-8 in Albuquerque. Art Mason laced a two-out, two run double in to the right field corner to cap off a huge night as he went 3 for 6 with the double, home run and three RBIs.

Flagstaff scored seven runs after the seventh inning to pull out the improbable victory.

This one was a wild one from the start as Oscar Aleman hit a two-run home run in the first to get things going. Jaevan Cooper then blasted a three run shot in the bottom half to give the Mariachis a 3-2 lead.

Rodney Millar hit a solo home run to left in the third to tie the game at 3-3. But Juan Vargas lined a two-run double into the left centerfield gap to put the Mariachis back in front. He would then score on a sacrifice fly as Albuquerque extended their lead to 6-3 in the third.

It would stay that way until the eighth when Art Mason and Robbie Westbrook hit back-to-back home runs to cut the Mariachi lead to 6-5.

Jaevan Cooper answered with a solo shot down the line in the bottom half off of Miguel Asencio as Albuquerque went up 7-5.

The ninth was a wild one. Roberto Geronimo struck out to open the inning and Rodney Millar flew out to center. Donnie Roland then doubled and Emmitt Hampton hit a pinch-hit single to right. Taylor Snyder reached on a fielding error to score Roland to cut it to 7-6. Josh Ortega pinch hit for Kiko Pressley and was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Avalos came on in relief of the Mariachi’s closer Kubek and the first pitch he threw, he served up a two-run double to Art Mason to put Flagstaff up 8-7. Robbie Westbrook then lined a single to score both Ortega and Mason to make it 10-7.

Vic Miller came on to try and close it out and once again he turned it into an adventure. Beckman doubled to right and Reyes lined a two out single to score him. But Miller would get Juan Vargas to fly out to left to end it and he picked up his 11th save.

Miguel Asencio (5-1) was credited with the win, working the eighth and allowing the solo home run.

Robbie Westbrook went 2-4 in the game to break an 0 for 23 slump.

On Tuesday evening the Mariachis got some late inning heroics from Hunter Hamilton and then a Flagstaff error that allowed the winning run to score in the tenth inning in a 4-3 victory. Hunter Hamilton went 2 for 4 with a double and eighth inning solo home run to tie the ball game.

Flagstaff got off to a fast start as Roberto Geronimo homered to left in the first inning. The two-run shot was his 17th on the season, leading the Mountain League. Forrest Owen would hit a solo home run in the second to give the Hops a 3-0 lead.

Rocco Reyes would get the Mariachis on the board in the fifth inning, with a two-run shot off of Steve Hubbard.

That setup Hamilton for his late inning heroics, hitting a two-out, solo home run to left in the bottom of the eighth to tie the ball game.

In the tenth, Juan Vargas walked to open the inning. Hamilton tried to sacrifice home over, but Josh Ortega couldn’t get the ball out of his glove and everyone was safe. Jaevan Cooper then tried a sacrifice bunt to third, but Donnie Roland threw the ball into center field allowing Vargas to score easily and the Mariachis walked it off with a ball leaving the infield.

Also Osuna (1-2) took the loss for Flagstaff. He worked the ninth and tenth. Felipe Lugo (1-1) was credited with the win for the Mariachis.

In the finale, Janis Jung’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth won it for Albuquerque 3-2 as they took two of three from red-hot Flagstaff.

An RBI double from Emmitt Hampton got things started for Flagstaff in the second as they took an early 1-0 lead. Jaevan Cooper would tie it up in the bottom half with a solo shot off of Sam Herzog. It was his third home run of the series and 10th on the season.

The Hops would retake the lead in the fifth thanks to a solo home run from Forrest Owen. It was his second of the series and third this season.

Also Osuna came on in relief of Sam Herzog in the seventh and gave up two doubles that allowed Albuquerque to tie the game at 2-2. Alexi Raimo had the second one with two-outs that scored Jaevan Cooper.

In the ninth, Thomas Estrado led off with a triple to deep center off of Peter Gorzelski. Gorzelski would then walk the next two batters to setup a force out anywhere. But Janis Jung wit a sacrifice fly deep to right off of Pedro Macias to allow Estrado to easily score and the Mariachis had their second consecutive walk off victory.

Sam Herzog was good once again, tossing six inning and allowing just one run on four hits. He struck out five and walked one but did not figure in the decision.

Flagstaff will head to San Antonio (27-23) for a four game weekend series to end the seven game road trip.

Around the League: Santa Fe’s Ron Sposato (1-7) picked up his first win on the season as he tossed a complete game shutout in a 2-0 win over El Paso. The Gilbert Barnstormers hit six home runs in a 14-7 victory over Mesa. Albert Zambrano hit two home runs and rove in seven, including a walk off grand slam as Henderson defeated San Diego 15-12. Long Beach scored four times in the top of the ninth to defeat Las Vegas 7-5 and extend their winning streak to seven games.

The Gilbert Barnstormers have acquired reliever Hubert Coronado from Las Vegas in exchange for shortstop prospect, 20-year-old Alex De Jesus.

        May 26-29: FLAGSTAFF (25-28) @ SAN ANTONIO (31-23)
        Stadium: Huntington Park (Capacity: 9,421)

        May 26: Javelinas 7, Hops 2
        May 27: Javelinas 10, Hops 2
        May 28: Javelinas 7, Hops 4
        May 29: Javelinas 3, Hops 2

San Antonio, TX (AP) - The Flagstaff Hops ended their seven game road trip with a disastrous sweep at the hands of the San Antonio Javeilnas. They have now lost a season high six straight games as they head home.

The Javelinas cruised to a rather east 7-2 victory in the opener of the four game weekend series. Sam Morgan provided the pop, going 2 for 3 with a double, home run and driving in two in the victory.

Flagstaff has a chance to blow things open early against San Antonio ace Gus Woodson as they had the bases loaded with just one out, but could only manage two runs on a two-run double from Kiko Pressley. After that Woodson just shut down the Hops. He went six innings, allowing two runs on six hits. He struck out four and walked three in picking up his fourth win on the campaign.

Sam Morgan would give San Antonio the lead in the fourth when he hit a two-run home run to left, putting the Javelinas up 3-2. They would add three more in the fifth on an RBI double from Brian Gonzales, and RBI singles from Emil Palmiero and T.J. Hart.

Sam Morgan would add a solo home run in the seventh off of Pedro Macias to make it 7-2.

Brian Montano earned the rare three-inning save, his first on the season.

Injury news for the Hops as catcher Rafael Perez was injured sliding into second in the eighth inning. At first the club feared the worst, but x-rays were negative after the game. The club has placed him on the 10-day Injured List. 27-year-old catcher Phillip Choi has been recalled from Triple-A Albuquerque.

On Friday evening the Javelinas brought their big sticks, hitting five home runs in a 10-2 rout out the Hops. It was hard to pick out one guy, but T.J. Hart was the player of the game, going 2 for 5 with a double, home run and three RBIs.

Shoe Lace O’Tying (5-2) was knocked around in his worst performance this season. He went six plus innings, allowing six runs on 13 hits. He struck out five and did not walk a batter.

San Antonio starter Ted McClendon had to leave the game in the top of the second inning with an apparent shoulder injury.

Josh Ortega (5) and Rodney Millar (16) both homered for the Hops in the fifth inning when they cut the lead to 4-2 at that time. But they would get no closer. T.J. Hart hit a three-run shot in the seventh and Zach Lamb hit a two-run shot in the eighth to put this one out of reach.

On Saturday afternoon, the Javelinas scored five times in the first inning on their way to a 7-4 victory to extend the Hops season high losing streak to five games. Sam Morgan went 2 for 4 with a double, home run and three RBIs. He has been a thorn in the side of the Hops all series long.

Sean Pressley struggled out of the gate, but got it together after the first and went six innings. In the first, Brian Gonzalez led off with a double and score on an Emil Palmiero RBI single. Sam Morgan then homered down the right field line after Palmiero was picked off trying to steal. Davis Hernandez then blasted a three run shot to make it 5-0.

Flagstaff would chip away at the lead though. Art Mason homered in the third. And Oscar Aleman lined a two-run double in the fifth to cut the lead to 5-3. Newly acquired Leandro Lugo almost gave the Hops the lead but left fielder Matsui robbed him of a home run to keep it 5-3.

The Javelinas would put this one away in the seventh as Sam Morgan rattled a two-run double off the wall in right center off of reliever Samuel Espinoza.

Flagstaff would add a run in the eighth on an Arturo Mardones RBI single. They had a chance to pull even closer but Art Mason popped out to short to end the inning with runners on second and third.

Andres Montoya (2-4) picked up the win for San Antonio. He went six inning, allowing three runs on seven hits. He struck out three and walked three. John Smith picked up his 13th save working the ninth. Sean Pressley (2-4) took the loss, allowing five runs on nine hits in six innings of work, but he only allowed three hits after the first inning. He struck out five and walked one. Miguel Asencio struck out the side in one inning of relief.

In the finale, once again Flagstaff could not come up with timely hitting, twice leaving the bases loaded, in a 3-2 loss to the Javelinas to complete the sweep. T.J. Hart went 4 for 4 with a double, home run and RBI, scoring twice in the victory.

Steve Hubbard (1-4) pitched well but left the game in the sixth in a tie game with the bases loaded and none out. Miguel Asencio got Matsui to pop out, and got Hernandez to hit a line drive right at Donnie Roland, but Roland looked like he had never seen the ball coming and did what he could to get out of the way as two runs scored to make it 3-1 Javelinas.

The Hops would score a run on a Robbie Westbrook sac fly in the seventh to cut the lead to 3-2, but only managing one run while having the bases loaded with none out was huge.

Russ Waters (4-3) picked up the win, going six innings and allowing one run on seven hits. He struck out two and walked one. The Javelinas used five bullpen arms to close out the Hops with John Smith picking up his 14th save.

Leandro Lugo went 0 for 4 with three strikeouts and is now 0 for 8 since coming over from Henderson.

The Hops (25-28) will try and end their six game losing streak as they head home for three games against Amarillo (26-26) and four against West Texas (23-30).

Around the League: Albuquerque’s Michael Kaminski tossed a complete game two-hit shutout of St. George, striking out nine and walking just one as he improved to (4-5). Scottsdale’s Arellano pitched 6 1/3 innings, allowing one run and striking out 11 in a 1-0 loss to Surprise. San Diego scored five times in the bottom of the eighth inning to rally to a 7-3 victory and end Long Beach’s 11 game winning streak.

          Hops Trade for Lugo

          Lugo_Trade_22

Flagstaff, AZ (AP) - The Flagstaff Hops addressed a big need on Saturday morning as they traded for slugger Leandro Lugo from the Henderson Silver Knights. The third baseman will move right into the lineup as the club has sent 18-year-old Kiko Pressley down to Triple-A Albuquerque to work on his game. Pressley is a highly rated prospect, but has struggled so far in 2022.

The Hops sent back three prospects to the Silver Knights. 18-year-old center fielder Oscar Romo, 19-year-old right fielder Calvin Gaudio and 24-year-old reliever Terrance Malone went sent to Henderson.

“Offensively, we have struggled at times, and we have all the confidence that Kiko will develop into a star, but right now we picked up a player that can help us win right now and allow Pressley to develop,” said general manager Mister Ninja.

Lugo has played in 39 games for Henderson, hitting (.309) with 10 homers and 24 RBI to go along with four stolen bases.

              May 30 - June 1: AMARILLO (26-29) @ FLAGSTAFF (28-28)
              Stadium: AutoZone Park (Capacity: 9,486)

              May 30: Hops 5, Honey Hunters 1
              May 31: Hops 10, Honey Hunters 7 (11)
              June 1: Hops 8, Honey Hunters 7

Flagstaff, AZ (AP) - The Flagstaff Hops returned home on a six game losing streak and earned a hard fought sweep of the Amarillo Honey Hunters, winning the last two by rallying and finishing it off in walk off fashion.

In the opener, a Memorial Day matinee, the Hops defeated the Honey Hunters 5-1 to put an end to their six-game losing streak. Sam Herzog (5-2) picked up the win as he continues his impressive 2022 campaign.

The Hops grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the second on a Forrest Owen RBI single to center that scored Leandro Lugo.

The Honey Hunters would tie it up in the fourth as David Petrovski hit a no doubter into the right field bleachers into a stiff breeze.

Flagstaff would answer right back with two in the bottom half on a Forrest Owen two-run single. They would add another in the fifth on a Rodney Millar ground out with the bases loaded. Red hot Oscar Aleman would make it 5-1 in the sixth with an RBI single to right that score Robbie Westbrook.

The rest was about Sam Herzog. He went six innings, allowing the one run on four hits. He struck out three and walked three, while lowering his ERA to 2.33, best in the Mountain League. Aldo Osuna worked a three inning save in relief of Herzog, allowing just two hits and striking out three while throwing 51 pitches.

Felipe Gomez (4-4) took the loss for Amarillo. He only went four plus innings, allowing four runs on ten hits. He struck out three and did not walk a batter.

The Hops won a wild one on Tuesday evening, twice blowing three run leads, then winning on a walk-off home run in eleven innings, 10-7. Art Mason was the hero, going 4 for 5, but the big one was a three-run home run with none out in the 11th that sent the fans home happy.

This one got off to a wild start. Flagstaff scored three in the first thanks to a two-run double from Roberto Geronimo and a solo home run from Rodney Millar. It could have been an even bigger inning but Geronimo was thrown out at third trying to stretch the double into a triple.

Amarillo immediately responded in the top of the second with a crooked number of their own. Floyd hit a two-run home run, then Watson and Castaneda hit back-to-back doubles to tie the game at 3-3.

Oscar Aleman would put Flagstaff back up by three in the bottom of the third as he blasted a three-run home run to left, his tenth on the year.

But in the top of the fourth, Amarillo responded, scoring four times to take the lead, off of starter Robert Francis. Castaneda laced an RBI single to right to score Wallace. Then Sweet hit a long three-run bomb to right to make it 7-6.

Oscar Aleman came through again in the bottom half of the inning, singling home Art Mason with two-outs to tie the game at 7-7.

The bullpens then took over and things settled down with neither team scoring again until extra innings. Forrest Owen doubled off of the wall in center to open the 11th. He just missed a home run by inches. Arturo Mardones was then hit by a pitch to setup first and second with none out. Art Mason then hit a no doubter over the bleachers in right to walk it off in a 10-7 victory.

After a wild start that saw Robert Francis get shelled, allowing seven runs on ten hits in 3 1/3 innings, the bullpen allowed just three base runners over the final 7 2/3 innings. Mark Wirth, Samuel Espinoza, Pedro Macias, and Oliver Benedict were on top of their game.

In the finale, the Hops rallied from 7-3 down in the fifth inning, scoring twice in the seventh and three times in the bottom of the ninth to walk it off 8-7. Emmitt Hampton hit a two-run home run with one out in the ninth to win it as Flagstaff got back to the .500 mark.

This was another wild one, as starter Shoe Lace O’Tying was just plain awful. He gave up seven runs on nine hits, including five home runs, in just 4 2/3 innings. He had trouble with his command all day, walking two and leaving plenty of balls in hittable spots. The Honey Hunters big blow cam in the fifth when Stanton Brickman hit a three-run shot to put the visitors in command, 7-3.

But this Flagstaff team also brought the big sticks on Wednesday afternoon, hitting four home runs of their own. Skyler Lyons and Art Mason hit back-to-back homers to open the seventh. Then in a wild bottom of the ninth, Skyler Lyons doubled to open the inning. Art Mason lined a ball off the first base bag and into right field, scoring Lyons. Robbie Westbrook would ground into a fielder’s choice, but advanced to second on a wild pitch. The Honey Hunters decided to pull their closer and bring in Harold Groniga. He fell behind 2-0 to Emmitt Hampton and then hung a slider that Hampton hammered into the right field bleachers to win it.

Peter Gorzelski (2-3) picked up the win out of the bullpen, getting the final six outs and allowing no hits.

The first year player draft is this evening. Hops (28-28) will welcome the West Texas Bison (26-30) into town for a four game series to end the home stand starting tomorrow evening.

Around the League: Phoenix hit seven home runs including two each by Keith Morales, Darren McCarty and Michael Yancey in a 17-5 victory over Tucson.

                June 1, 2022
Phoenix, AZ (AP) - The IBL held their First Year Player Draft on Thursday evening in Phoenix. It consisted of six rounds with the draft order determined in the first year by a lottery. Compensatory picks were given to teams based a predetermined formula after the inaugural player draft back in the winter.

The top overall pick was 19-year-old pitcher Barack Bichette out of Pennsylvania by the Gilbert Barnstormers. He is a highly rated prospect but will need some time in the minors before he can make an impact in Gilbert. The Prescott Hot Shots picked third baseman Jaime Rosa second overall. Long Beach selected pitcher Josh Yoshida third overall. He may have a chance to play in Long Beach as soon as 2024. The Albuquerque Mariachis selected 19-year-old centerfielder Emmitt Divino, an absolute stud that may be able to make an impact from day one. Rounding out the top five, San Antonio selected 19-year-old first baseman Brandon Conley.

Flagstaff selected 10th overall and had arguably the best draft. Their first pick was 21-year-old starting pitcher Jared Gunter, who comes in with an OVR rating of 75 and potential in the 90’s. Their seven selections had an average overall rating of 67.86 (1st) and average potential of 84.57 (4th). Flagstaff went heavily in on starting pitching, but selected an electric closer and future stud outfielder.

Here is a look at the first round and breakdown of the potentials and overalls of each team’s draft. The number indicates their draft position.

                  2022 FLAGSTAFF HOPS DRAFT

                  FLG_Draft1

Phoenix, AZ (AP) - The Flagstaff Hops completed their first draft and they knocked it out of the park. They wanted to add some young starting pitchers and that is just what they did. They were awarded pick #10 in each round after a pre-draft lottery.

With their first selection that chose left-handed starting pitcher Jared Gunter from Stanford. The 21-year-old has an A potential and already rating as a 75 OVR prospect. He features a 4-seam fastball, change up, curve and slider. The 6’2” 222 lb pitcher out of California will liley start next season in Double A.

In the supplemental round, the Hops selected another starting pitcher in Johnnie Sabel out of the University of Delaware. The 6’2’ 198 lb right hander will need some seasoning down in the minors, but he has a B potential and is already rated as a 68 OVR. He has a four pitch repertoire of a rising fastball, change up, curveball and slider.

The Hops second round pick saw them select their first position player in high school first baseman Steven Graves out of Illinois. The 6’5” 197 lb prospect, bats lefty but throws right handed. He has excellent plate vision and discipline, but will need to bulk up a bit and work on his power numbers if he wants to stay at first base.

Flagstaff chose Ronald Young with the tenth pick of the third round. The 22-year-old is a 6’1” and 195 lb closing pitcher out of Texas that went to Baylor. The righty features four pitches and is rated a 66 OVR but has A potential. He throws a 4-seamer, splitter, change up and two-seamer.

                  FLG_Draft2

In the fourth round the Hops selected right fielder Gil Molina out of the Dominican Republic. The 20-year-old has blazing speed but will need to work on his contact and power in the minors. He is a C potential prospect that will likely not see Flagstaff until at least 2026.

Ross Preston, another left handed starting pitcher was selected in the fifth round out of Indiana. At 6’5’ and 229 lbs, he is a flame thrower with a fastball in the mid-90’s. He is rated a 70 OVR but only a C potential. He is likely a 2026+ prospect.

The Hops final selection was right handed starter Benjamin Anderson. At 69 OVR and a C prospect, the 5’11” 175 lb-er out of Oregon has a five pitch arsenal.

This group had the fourth highest potential (84.57) behind only El Paso, Gilbert and St George. They were tops in OVR with an average of (67.86) ahead of Las Vegas, Glendale, Colorado Springs and Mesa. It is a great combination of skill and potential that should setup Flagstaff in the coming years.

All seven draft picks have agreed to terms and will report to camp in the spring of 2023.

                    June 2-5: WEST TEXAS (28-32) @ FLAGSTAFF (30-30)
                    Stadium: AutoZone Park (Capacity: 9,486)

                    June 2: Hops 2, Bison 1
                    June 3: Bison 10, Hops 1
                    June 4: Hops 4, Bison 1
                    June 5: Bison 5, Hops 2

Flagstaff, AZ (AP) - The Flagstaff Hops and West Texas Bison split a four game weekend series at AutoZone Park to end the home stand. The Hops took games one and three with the Bison winning in a blowout in game two, and then taking the finale.

In the opener, Ryan Pressley tossed an absolute gem as the Flagstaff Hops slipped past the West Texas Bison 2-1. Pressley went 8 1/3 innings, allowing just three hits and one run, while striking out nine and walking none.

West Texas lone run came on a solo home run from Earl Phelps in the second inning. They would not get another hit the rest of the way. Vic Miller came in to record the final two outs and earn his 12th save.

Flagstaff would get single runs in the second and third innings to provide all the offense that Pressley would need. A third inning RBI double from Forrest Owen tied the ball game, and a fourth inning solo home run from Roberto Geronimo, his 18th, would prove to be the winner.

On Friday night, the Bison rebounded in a big way with a 10-1 romp over the Hops. Alfonzo Ryan went 2 for 5 with two home runs and five RBIs to help lead the way as the Bison cruised to the easy win.

Douglas Matsui (4-4) was just about unhittable, tossing 6 1/3 innings and allowing just one run on two hits. He struck out six and walked only one.

Steve Hubbard (1-5) was once again lousy, putting it bluntly. The highest paid player on the Hops is easily their worst starter and Friday night he was shelled. He allowed six runs on ten hits in just 4 2/3 innings.

Roberto Geronimo hit a solo home run in the seventh for Flagstaff’s only run. It was his 19th dinger on the season. The Bison hit five home runs in the game against a Flagstaff staff that has now given up 104 home runs in 58 games, worst in all of the IBL.

On Saturday evening, Sam Herzog was once again in good form as he tossed six innings, allowing just one run in a 4-1 victory for the Hops over the Bison. Herzog struck out seven and did not issue a walk as he improved to (6-2) on the season.

The Bison would grab the lead in the top of the first as Brian Lee homered to right. It was his first on the year.

Josh Ortega, Arturo Mardones and Art Mason hit solo home runs for Flagstaff. Robbie Westbrook would add an RBI single to help Flagstaff move back over .500.

Vic Miller worked the ninth to pick up his 13th save. Miguel Asencio struck out the side in the seventh and Aldo Osuna worked a 1-2-3 eighth in relief of Sam Herzog.

Robbie Westbrook (14) and Arturo Mardones (12) each stole a base in the victory.

In the finale, the Bison got a nice pitching performance from Todd McCallum and a big insurance two-run home run from David Razae to escape with a split of the four game series.

David Razae got things going in the first with a double. He would advance to third on a fly out and scored on a Quinones sacrifice fly to make it 1-0.

The Hops would tie it up in the second on an RBI triple from Leandro Lugo. He would score on a passed ball to give Flagstaff a 2-1 lead.

That lead was short lived though as Alfonzo Ryan lined a bases-loaded single to left in the third that scored two runs to put West Texas back on top. That was all that Todd McCallum would need. McCallum (3-5) pitched six solid innings, allowing the two runs on just five base hits. He struck out three and walked three. Four arms out of the bullpen got the final nine outs without allowing a hit. Matthew Ball earned his 18th save as he worked a 1-2-3 ninth.

Robert Francis (2-4) took the loss for Flagstaff. He went six plus innings, allowing three runs on seven hits. He struck out one and did not walk a batter. Pedro Macias got the final out of the seventh to get Samuel Espinoza out of a jam, but surrendered a big two-run home run to David Rezae in the ninth.

Robbie Westbrook (15) and Arturo Mardones (13) each stole another base in the loss.

Flagstaff (30-30) will now head out on the road to face Salt Lake (23-36) and St George (32-28) for six games beginning Tuesday evening in Salt Lake City.

Around the League: Goodyear’s Ionatana Wiliama tossed eight shutout innings and scattered three hits while striking out 12 and walking seven in a 1-0 victory over Surprise. St. George’s Ryan Holland fans 14, and allows zero runs in win versus Roswell. Salt River’s Elias Sbarbori tossed a two-hit shutout, striking out nine in a 7-0 victory over Phoenix. Glendale’s McCormick homered twice and drove in six in a 15-3 victory over Gilbert.

                      June 7-9: FLAGSTAFF (30-33) @ SALT LAKE (26-36)
                      Stadium: Deseret Field (Capacity: 6,860)

                      June 7: Chukars 4, Hops 2 (12)
                      June 8: Chukars 6, Hops 5
                      June 9: Chukars 4, Hops 2

Salt Lake City, UT (AP) - The Flagstaff Hops sleepwalked through a three game sweep at the hands of last place Salt Lake up to Utah to start their road trip.

The Chuckars won in dramatic fashion in the opener as J.P. Grant hit a two-run walk-off home run on a rainy Tuesday evening in downtown Salt Lake City to help the home team win it 4-2.

Flagstaff got a couple of great pitching performances from Shoe Lace O’Tying and Aldo Osuna, but it wasn’t enough as Miguel Asencio (5-2) gave up a single and home run to the only two batters that he would face. O’Tying went seven innings, allowing two runs on three hits, while striking out nine and walking just one. Osuna faced twelve batters and did not allow a base runner, striking out six, as he lowered his ERA to 2.51.

Flagstaff managed twelve hits, but only one for extra bases in the loss. They also stole four more bases with Westbrook getting his 16th. The Hops trailed 2-1 in the eighth, but Emmitt Hampton lined a two-out double off of the wall in left to score Roberto Geronimo to tie the game at 2-2. Hampton went 3 for 5 with the double, RBI and also scored a run. Forrest Owen also had three hits, all singles, in the loss.

Things did not go much better for the Hops on Wednesday evening as they dropped a 6-5 decision to the Chukars. David Rosas did most of the damage for Salt Lake, going 3 for 3 with two home runs and four RBIs to help lead the Chukars to the victory.

Salt Lake would grab a lead in the first inning on a Juan Chavez RBI double.

The Hops would strike back in the top of the second as Forrest Owen hit a three-run shot to left, his fourth on the year to make it 3-1. The Chukars would get that back in the bottom half of the inning on a David Rosas two-run blast to left,

Roberto Geronimo would hit his league leading 20th home run on the season in the top of the third to put Flagstaff back up, 4-3.

Back-to-back home runs from David Rosas and Hideo Yoshida in the fifth put the Chukars in front for good. They would add a run in the sixth on a Rosas RBI single to go up 6-4.

Flagstaff would scratch across a run in the seventh on an Art Mason RBI double, but they would leave the bases loaded as Emmitt Hampton blasted a laser, but right at left fielder Hideo Yoshida to end the inning.

Emmitt Franco came on in the ninth to pick up his 15th save for Salt Lake.

Ryan Pressley (3-5) took the loss. He struggled in this one, going 5 1/3 innings, allowing six runs on nine hits. He struck out four and walked one. Oliver Benedict pitched the finals 2 2/3 innings and scattered three hits and struck out four.

Virgil Wray (3-6) picked up the win for Salt Lake, going six innings and allowing four runs on six hits. He struck out three. The bullpen used four arms to get the final nine outs.

In the finale, the Chukars got off to a quick start and then held on for a 4-2 victory to earn the three game sweep. Len Rainey tossed six solid innings to earn the victory as Flagstaff lost their fourth straight.

The Chukars got off to a great start, scoring twice in the first thanks to a J.P. Grant RBI double and Chavez RBI single. They would add to that lead in the second thanks to a Larry Butler solo shot.

Flagstaff would get on the board in the third on an Emmitt Hampton two-run home run, his eighth on the year.

Adolfo Villarreal would hit a solo home run for Salt Lake in the fourth to increase their lead to 4-2. Len Rainey (3-6) picked up the win, tossing six innings and allowing two runs on five hits. The bullpen allowed just one hit over the final three innings with Emmett Franco picking up his 16th save.

Steve Hubbard (1-6) took the loss. He went six innings, allowing four runs on six hits. He struck out six. Hubbard is the highest paid player on the Hops roster and has struggled so far in 2022. There are rumors that the Hops are trying to move him for some younger arms.

Flagstaff (30-33) will now head to St George for a three game series with the Archers to wrap up the road trip.

Around the League: Prescott’s Ken Smith tossed a complete game, one-hit shutout in a 3-0 victory over Santa Fe. He struck out four and walked five as he improved to (5-3). Colorado Springs’ Sam Gonzalez improved to (9-1) as he tossed 7 2/3 shutout innings in an 8-0 victory over Phoenix. He scattered five hits while striking out two and walking six.

                        Hops Trade Hubbard

                        Fluty_22

Flagstaff, AZ (AP) - The Flagstaff Hops made a big move today, trading away starting pitcher Steve Hubbard to the Fort Worth Kings, along with catcher Rafael Perez in exchange for pitching prospect Russell Fluty and reliever Aaron Sanchez.

Hubbard struggled in 2022 for Flagstaff, posting a (1-6) record with an ERA of 5.94 in 63.2 innings of work. He had 57 strikeouts and eight walks, but allowed 15 home runs in 13 starts. The team was anxious to move him and his $17.1M salary that ballooned to $25.7M by 2025.

Switch-hitting catcher Rafael Perez appeared in 32 games for the Hops before suffering a shoulder injury. He hit (.208) with three home runs and 10 RBIs.

The Hops acquired hard throwing 23-year-old Russell Fluty from the Kings. He has not appeared in a game in the IBL this year, but has an impressive repertoire of pitches including a 96 MPH fastball and nasty slider. He has an A potential and comes over with a 76 OVR rating. The team will likely send him to Triple-A Albuquerque upon his arrival.

Also acquired in the deal was right-handed 23-year-old reliever Aaron Sanchez. He appeared in 26 games for Fort Worth this season, pitching 38 innings and posting a 3.79 ERA with a 3-2 record and two saves in three opportunities.

St George, UT (AP) - The Flagstaff Hops rebounded from a sweep in Salt Lake to sweep the St George Archers in impressive fashion at the Bank of Utah Park. The Hops scored 25 runs in the three game series to get back to .500 as they end the road trip at (3-3).

In the opener, the Hops took out some anger as they hit four home runs in a 13-3 blowout of the Archers. Josh Ortega had himself a day, going 5 for 5 with two home runs, a double, four runs scored and six RBIs to lead the onslaught.

Ortega got the party started in the first inning, blasting an opposite field, three-run home run. Roberto Geronimo would get in on the fun in the fourth, as he hit a three-run blast to left. It was his 20th on the season and it put the Hops up 6-1. A Josh Ortega RBI double in the fifth made it 7-1. The Hops would put this one away in the sixth as they scored four more runs to open up an 11-1 lead.

Back-to-back home runs from Josh Ortega and Rodney Millar in the eighth made it 13-3 as the Hops broke their four game losing streak.

Robert Francis (5-2) picked up the win, going 5 1/3 innings and allowing two runs on seven hits. He struck out four and was good enough to earn the win.

Four Archers pitchers appeared and none were that good. Casey Pack (1-1) took the loss, allowing six runs on six hits. He did strike out five and walk one. The bullpen wasn’t much better, pitching the final five innings and allowing seven runs on nine hits.

The Hops pulled out a wild 8-7 victory on Saturday evening behind a solo home run from Arturo Mardones in the top of the ninth. This game featured five lead changes and moved the Hops into a tie with St George for second place in the Mountain League West.

St George would take an early lead in the first on a Jamaal McCormick RBI single, scoring Samuels who had opened the game with a double to center.

Flagstaff immediately answered with two runs of their own on a Donnie Roland two-run home run off the scoreboard in right. But the Archers replied with a crooked number of their own as Neal Samuels doubled to right, scoring two. McCormick would add a two-run home run in the third to make it 5-2, as Angelo Chacin struggled in his 2022 debut.

The Hops would score twice in the fourth and twice in the fifth to retake the lead. In the fourth it was Leandro Lugo hitting a two-run home run. It was his 11th on the season, but first with Flagstaff after coming over from Henderson in a trade on May 28th. In the fifth, Art Mason hit a two-run home run to center to give Flagstaff the lead 6-5.

But the Archers had an answer as Steve Marquez homered off of the right field foul pole. The two-run shot put St George back in front 7-6.

In the seventh, Robbie Westbrook doubled to left, scoring Arturo Mardones to tie the game at 7-7. That setup Mardones for his late game heroics as he homered off of Cesar Pulido in the ninth.

Vic Miller came on and recorded the save, his 14th. Miguel Asencio (6-2) picked up the win, pitching two solid innings, walking just one and striking out five. Angelo Chacin had a rough debut for the Hops, allowing five runs on eight hits in only 3 2/3 innings.

The series finale was another close one, but the Hops used the long ball to pull out a 4-3 victory. Skyler Lyon’s seventh inning solo home run proved to be the difference for the Hops in front of a sellout at the Bank of Utah Park.

Flagstaff (33-33) would get on the board first in the top of the second as Roberto Geronimo hit a bases loaded sacrifice fly to score Leandro Lugo. The Archers would get that run back in the bottom half on a solo home run from Percy Sievers, his first on the season. Art Mason would hit a solo shot in the top of the third, his 14th on the season, to make it 2-1 Hops.

Rodney Millar homered in the fifth to make it 3-1. It was his 19th on the season. Sam Robinson responded with a mammoth shot to left in the bottom of the fifth, his 12th, to cut it to 3-2.

Skyler Lyons hit a solo shot to left to open the seventh to provide all the cushion that Flagstaff would need.

The Archers (32-34) would get one back in the bottom of the eighth after Angel Montes tripled to right and Jamaal McCormick doubled him home.

Vic Miller came on and closed things out with a perfect 1-2-3 ninth to earn his 15th save.

Shoe Lace O’Tying (6-2) picked up the win, going 6 2/3 innings and allowing two run son six hits. He only struck out two and walked one. Aldo Osuna finished the seventh and worked the eighth for the Hops.

Flagstaff has tomorrow off before hosting Desert League Central leading Glendale (42-24) to open a six game home stand. The Desert Dogs own the second best record in baseball behind only Long Beach.

Around the League: San Diego’s Gerald Armstrong tosses a four-hit shutout as the Seals defeated Glendale 2-0. Surprise scored five in the bottom of the ninth to tie the Rafters, then wins it 10-9, in the tenth, with a walk off home run from Steve Mihelich. Tucson pounded out 20 hits in a 16-4 victory over Goodyear. Shea Bolosco went 5 for 6 with two doubles and two RBIs to lead the Roadrunner attack. Colorado Springs Jack Withenshaw tossed a two-hit shutout as the Snow Sox defeated Salt Lake 5-0. Glendale rallied from down 7-1 in the eighth to stun the Seals 9-8 in extra innings. Jacob Myers three-run home run with two-out in the ninth sent the game to extra innings, where the Desert Dogs pulled out the unlikely victory.

Amarillo’s Brian Anaya tossed a six-hit complete game shutout of Yuma. He struck out eight and did not walk a batter in the Honey Hunter’s 5-0 victory. Roswell’s Kelly Schwarzfeld belted three home runs and drove in four in the Aliens 7-1 victory over Santa Fe.

This month's power rankings are out with no change at the top or bottom.

                            1. Long Beach Surf Dawgs (43-23) (NC): This team is good offensively and has great pitching. If they can stay healthy, they will be there in October.

                            2. Glendale Desert Dogs (42-24) (+1): Pitching, led by Dan Moore, is the reason that this team is running away with the DL Central. Adrian Beltran is abusing the rest of the league with 14 home runs, 46 RBIs and a (.291) average to lead the Desert Dogs.

                            3. Fort Worth Kings (39-28) (+3): Strong pitching has this team atop the ML East. They lead the IBL in ERA (3.24), complete games (5), and shutouts (7).

                            4. El Paso Blue Rocks (37-27) (+6): The Blue Rocks are a solid team defensively with decent pitching. 20-year-old Josh Hawk has been a beast with 14 homers and 51 RBIs. By the way, they just stole another base while we were compiling these rankings. They lead the IBL with 118 stolen bases, 35 more than second place Las Vegas.

                            5. Las Vegas Nuggets (37-30) (-3): The Nuggets are one of the best offensive teams in the IBL, pitching has been average at best. Enrique Lima is having a great season with 10 homers and 39 RBIs to go along with a (.291) average.

                            6. Henderson Silver Knights (33-33) ( +15): The Silver Knights have rocketed up the power rankings thanks to great month. They are (17-8) over their last 25 games and have a +57 run differential. They are near the top in all the major hitting categories, led by Albert Zambrano who has 17 homers and 48 RBIs. Centerfielder Enos Webb has 15 homer and 13 stolen bases.

                            7. Colorado Springs Snow Sox (37-29) (+1): The Snow Sox lead the league in runs scored (351) and playing in the thin air they are near the top of the league offensively. Their pitching has been OK, led by ace Sam Gonzalez who is (10-1, 2.68) and has been excellent. They have six players with at least 12 home runs.

                            8. San Antonio Javelinas (26-31) (-1): The Javelinas starting pitching has been solid and offensively this team has few holes. Brian Gonzalez and Sam Morgan have been the keys to keeping this team near the top of the ML East.

                            9. Mesa Solar Sox (34-33) (+3): The Solar Sox are led by league MVP candidate John Nichols who has been on a tear. He is hitting (.347) with 15 homers and 47 RBIs to go along with 10 stolen bases.

                            10. Salt River Rafters (36-30) (-5): The Rafters sit in first, yet fell five spots in our power rankings. A solid club in a tough division that is led by Tuan Santana and his 14 homers and 45 RBIs. Not a lot of weaknesses but nothing that really stands out either on this team.

                            11. Flagstaff Hops (33-33) (+5): The Hops rely too much on the long ball, but they do lead the league in home runs. Pitching has been very good, but low OBP may hold this team back.

                            12. St George Archers (32-34) (-1): The Archers offensively are above average and pitching they are below average. That leaves them sitting near (.500) and near the middle of our power rankings.

                            13. Rio Rancho Owlz (34-33) (+5): The Owlz pitching has them climbing the rankings. Their bullpen has been a strength, and if they get to the seventh inning with a lead, the game is likely over. Their top five bullpen arms all have a sub 1.20 WHIP.

                            14. Gilbert Barnstormers (35-32) (+10): The Barnstormers have stormed from last place in the DL East into a Wild Card spot over the last month. This is one of the preseason favorites and they are starting to play like it, going (17-10) over their last 27. Right fielder Ryan Rodriguez has come on as of late with 15 homers and 47 RBIs to lead the team. They have started to score runs and that is the main reason why they are moving up.

                            15. Surprise Saguaros (34-33) (+5): The Saguaros have a positive run differential and have moved into Wild Card contention in the DL.

                            16. Roswell Aliens (35-31) (-12): Danny Watson (20 HR, 45 RBI) and Blake Pacinelli (18 HR, 48 RBI) are keeping this team in contention. Starting pitcher David Lee has been good, but their bullpen has struggled.

                            17. Phoenix Firebirds (32-33) (-2): The Firebirds starting pitching is keeping this team afloat. Angelo Velez, Rueben Starr, Mario Escobar and Josh Crutchfield have all been very good and all are over 29 years old on this veteran laden club. Keith Morales leads the club in homers (17) and RBIs (30).

                            18. Tucson Roadrunners (33-32) (-5): Pitching is keeping the Roadrunners in the Wild Card race as their hitting ranks near the bottom in most major categories. Shortstop Scotty North has been excellent, hitting (.273) with eight homers, 23 RBIs and 15 stolen bases.

                            19. Austin Fire Frogs (34-32) (-10): The Fire Frogs are sliding down the power rankings and their offense is the main reason. They are second worst in BA (.246) and their pitching is middle of the road. Going to have to pick things up if they want to remain in Wild Card contention in a tough Mountain League.

                            20. Albuquerque Mariachis (33-32) (+2): a team that will likely hang around most of the year. Nothing special offensively or defensively, but no real holes either.

                            21. Goodyear Jack Rabbits (31-36) (-4): a tough team to figure out. At times this team has looked spectacular but recently has been slumping. Ionatana Wiliama (5-6, 3.21) has looked great at times and has 82 strikeouts in 84.0 innings.

                            22. Amarillo Honey Hunters (32-33) (+1): David Petrovski has been fantastic and is currently on a 19 game hitting streak. He leads the team in homers (12) and RBIs (35) and is second in stolen bases (8).

                            23. West Texas Bison (30-36) (-9): young first baseman Alfonzo Ryan (15 HRs, 41 RBIs) has been a bright spot. 18-year-old starter Lowell Alan Pressley has shown flashes of stardom with 83 strikeouts in 87.0 innings, but at times has looked average.

                            24. Prescott Hot Shots (29-38) (-5): The Hot Shots look to be one of the big underachieving teams in the IBL. Picked to win the ML West, they are struggling to stay out of last place. The talent is there, but hasn’t lived up to the expectations. Matt Olsen has been a bright spot. The young left fielder has nine homers, 26 RBIs and 13 SBs.

                            25. Santa Fe Silver Bullets (30-36) (+1): mired in last place in a pretty competitive division. They have shown flashes that they can stay in the Wild Card race, but will need to pick up their pitching as the season moves forward. Five guys have hit at least ten homers in a balanced offensive attack.

                            26. San Diego Seals (24-43) (+1): this team has the talent with youngsters Matt Mulder and Matt Campbell both showing out. Keep an eye on this team in the second half.

                            27. Chandler Chiefs (29-37) (-2): Rick Singleton continues to be a bright spot in a dismal year. He has 10 homers, 37 RBIs and 5 stolen bases.

                            28. Salt Lake Chukars (27-38) (+1): Thor Odinson is still on the IL with a broken arm, so not much to get excited about with this bunch.

                            29. Scottsdale Scorpions (28-37) (-1): last in hitting (.234), last in runs (238), 27th in homers (66)……rinse, repeat.

                            30. Yuma Dust Devils (22-44) (NC): pitching is awful, and they don score a lot of runs. A -89 run differential says it all. Last in our rankings by a long way.

                                Stadium: AutoZone Park (Capacity: 9,486)

                                June 14: Desert Dogs 4, Hops 0
                                June 15: Hops 4, Desert Dogs 1
                                June 16: Hops 8, Desert Dogs 2

Flagstaff, AZ (AP) - The red-hot Flagstaff Hops took two of three from the Desert Central leading Glendale Desert Dogs to open the home stand. They played before three sellout crowds as the locals are starting to take notice of this team.

The Desert Dogs prevailed 4-0 in the opener in a pitcher’s duel. A pair of two-run home runs were all that Glendale would need to take the opener.

Cristobal Gonzalez (7-6) brought his A game on Tuesday evening, tossing 6 2/3 shutout innings, allowing five hits while striking out four and walking just one. The bullpen tight roped out of trouble in the eighth and ninth to nail down the win. Diego Coronado came in with runners on second and third and just one out in the ninth, but he got Forrest Owen to strike out and got Roberto Geronimo to ground out to end it and pick up his league leading 30th save.

The Desert Dogs would get all the runs that they would need in the second as Edward Hampton hit a two-run home run to left.

Ryan Pressley (3-6) did not have his best stuff, but he wasn’t bad. He went six innings, allowing two runs on six hits. He struck out four and walked two. Pedro Macias worked two perfect innings in relief. Aldo Osuna made one mistake in the ninth and it really was huge. He allowed a two-out, two-run home run to Adrian Beltran in the ninth to make it 4-0.

That gave the Desert Dogs the breathing room that they would need to close it out.

Leandro Lugo went 3 for 4 with three doubles in the loss.

On Wednesday evening the Mountain League’s ERA leader took the bump for the Hops and he was excellent once again as Flagstaff won 4-1. Sam Herzog tossed seven innings, allowing just one run as he lowered his ERA to 2.18.

The Hops would get on the board in the first inning as Art Mason doubled, advanced to third on a fly out and scored on a wild pitch.

Glendale would get that run back in the top of the second as Adrian Beltran grounded out to Josh Ortega with Clinton Lake scoring on the play.

Art Mason would homer in the bottom of the third to put the Hops in front for good. It was his 15th home run on the season.

Mason would score again in the fifth as he singled, stole second and scored on a Robbie Westbrook single to make it 3-1. Mason went 3 for 3 with the double, home run and three runs scored to lead the way for the Hops. Arturo Mardones would double home Josh Ortega in the sixth to make it 4-1.

Sam Herzog (7-2) was on point all night. He allowed just the one run on five hits in seven innings. He struck out three and did not issue a walk. Miguel Asencio worked a scoreless eighth and Vic Miller sent the Desert Dogs down 1-2-3 in the ninth to pick up his 16th save.

Roger Vargas (4-6) took the loss for Glendale, going five innings and allowing three runs on eight hits, while striking out three.

In the finale, the Hops used the long ball, hitting five home runs, in an 8-2 victory to win the series. Arturo Mardones went 2 for 4 with two home runs and three RBIs to help pace the suddenly red-hot Hops.

Flagstaff (35-34) would score runs in each of the first six innings as they were relentless, pounding out 14 hits, including eight extra base hits in the victory. Josh Ortega (9), Forrest Owen (5) and Leandro Lugo (12) also hit home runs for the Hops in the win.

Robert Francis (4-4) picked up the win. He only went five innings, but scattered six hits and allowed just the two runs. He struck out two and did not issue a walk. The only blemish came in the fifth inning as Alex Yabu and Adrian Beltran hit back-to-back solo home runs. Beltran’s shot was estimated at almost 460 feet.

Mark Wirth picked up the save as he threw the final four innings, allowing just on ehit and striking out two. It was his first save of the season.

Will Nixon (2-3) took the loss for the Desert Dogs. He was chased after just 2 2/3 innings after allowing five runs on seven hits.

Up next for Flagstaff will be a three game series with St George (33-37) to close out the home stand.

Around the League: Blake Pacinelli hit a grand slam in the 11th as Roswell walked it off in a 12-8 victory over their rivals from Albuquerque.
