Re: Intermountain Baseball League - Presented by BigJdotcom01

    June 17-19: ST GEORGE (36-37) @ FLAGSTAFF (35-37)
    Stadium: AutoZone Park (Capacity: 9,486)

    June 17: Archers 4, Hops 0
    June 18: Archers 3, Hops 2
    June 19: Archers 4, Hops 2

Flagstaff, AZ (AP) - An absolutely embarrassing three game sweep at the hands of the slumping St George Archers has seen the Hops drop to third place in the Mountain League West. They managed a paltry 12 hits and four runs in the series as they finished the home stand a disappointing (2-4).

The Archers won the opener 4-0 behind a one hit pitching performance from four arms. Ryan Holland allowed a two-out single to Skyler Lyons in the sixth for the only base hit allowed all night as the Archers cruised to their first win against the Hops this season.

The Archers would take the lead in the top of the first inning on a Jamaal McCormick RBI single. They would then knock out starter Angelo Chacin in the second inning as he was hit with a line drive in the head. It was a scary few moments, but he was able to walk off under his own power and was still being evaluated.

The Archers would put the game away in the eighth and they just lit up reliever Samuel Espinoza, who came into a 1-0 game. He allowed three runs on four hits with the big blow being a two-run home run from Angel Montes.

The Hops bullpen was once again excellent despite the poor outing from Espinoza. Besides Espinoza, the bullpen tossed 5 1/3 innings of scoreless relief after Angelo Chacin left. Oliver Benedict, Also Osuna and Peter Gorzelski allowed just four hits and struck out five.

Ryan Holland (7-4) picked up the win for St George. He was almost untouchable, but in an odd twist, the Hops had four perfect hits in the game and all of them resulted in outs. Holland went 5 2/3 innings, allowing just the one hit. He struck out four and walked two. Tyler Gordon, Roberto Velasquez and Wendell Hampton did not allow a hit over the final 3 1/3 innings of relief.

On Saturday night, the Hops once again get zero clutch hits in a 3-2 loss to the slumping Archers. Rolando Powers home run in the top of the eighth was the difference as St George set themselves up for the series sweep on Sunday afternoon.

Shoe Lace O’Tying (6-3) went the distance and deserved better. He allowed the three runs on just five hits, while striking out nine and walking one. But he got zero help from an offense that has looked like one of the worst in the league the last few games. If they aren’t hitting a home run, they aren’t scoring.

St. George put the pressure on the struggling Hops with a run in the top of the first inning. A Juan Dias double and a Angle Montes RBI single gave the Archers the lead and it looked like that may be all that they needed again as the Hops looked absolutely clueless at the plate.

Leandro Lugo would hammer about the only mistake that starter Lawrence would make in the third. He blasted a two-run home run to left to put Flagstaff up 2-1. That lead was short lived though as Jamaal McCormick hit an 0-2 slider into the bleachers in right to tie the game at 2-2. O’Tying was great, but he made a couple of mistakes and unlike the Hops, the Archers made him pay.

In the eighth, ninth place hitter Rolando Powers hit an 0-2 sinker that hung a big and he blasted it over the scoreboard in left to put the Archers up 3-2. The Hops had no answer and base running blunders added to their frustration in this one. In the ninth after a leadoff walk from Donnie Roland, Skyler Lyons came into pinch run and was picked off. Emmitt Hampton would draw a two out walk, but Leandro Lugo struck out to end the game. Sam Goodman picked up save number 18 for the Archers.

Manager Bud Black was not real happy after the game. “This team is pressing hard at the plate. We are getting good pitching and we aren’t helping them, so one mistake has been costing us. We need to be better.”

In the finale, the Hops were not better, and they dropped a 4-2 decision to the Archers as they were swept for the second time in two weeks. The Archers carried a no hitter into the eighth inning before Robbie Westbrook’s single broke up the no hitter.

St George would grab the lead in the fifth inning as Sam Robinson hit a long home run over the wall in left center. Scottie Hager would add a two run single with the bases loaded in the sixth to give the Archers a little breathing room. Fred Roberts would add a run scoring single later in the inning to make it 4-0.

St George starter Taylor Austin left the game after only 4 1/3 innings with a no hitter going. He injured a finger on his throwing hand and had to be removed from the game. The Archers turned to their bullpen and they kept it going. Tyler Gordon worked 1 2/3 hitless innings and picked up the win. In the bottom of the eighth, Oscar Aleman broke up the no hit bid with a single to right. The next batter, Forrest Owen blasted one over the wall in left to cut the lead to 4-2. In the ninth, Sam Goodman would get the save, but it was not easy. Art Mason doubled to open the inning. After getting Robbie Westbrook to strike out, he got Leandro Lugo to pop out. Rodney Millar then hit a rocket to left that Mike Gehringer caught up against the wall in left to end the ball game and secure the sweep.

Ryan Pressley (3-7) took the loss, going 5 1/3 innings and allowing four runs on six hits. He struck out six, but walked three. Miguel Asencio was excellent out of the bullpen. He pitched 2 2/3 innings, allowing only two hits while striking out five and walking one.

The loss drops Flagstaff back to (35-37) as they head out on a six game road trip to Amarillo and Surprise.

Around the League: Colorado Springs Jack Withenshaw tossed eight shutout innings, allowing three hits and striking out five in a 1-0 victory over Glendale. Chandler’s Rick Singleton hit three home runs and drove in seven in the Chiefs 11-8 victory over Roswell. Austin rallied from a 6-0 deficit in the sixth inning in San Antonio to win 12-6. Ionatana Wiliama tossed five-hit complete game shutout, striking out 11, as Goodyear defeated Long Beach 6-0.

      June 21-23: FLAGSTAFF (35-40) @ AMARILLO (37-38)
      Stadium: Hodgetown Stadium (Capacity: 6,169)

      June 21: Honey Hunters 3, Hops 2
      June 22: Honey Hunters 5, Hops 4
      June 23: Honey Hunters 6, Hops 5

Amarillo, TX (AP) - The struggles continue for Flagstaff, as they were swept in Amarillo by the Honey Hunters, losing each game by only a run. They have now lost six straight and they are starting to lose ground in the race for the playoffs.

The Hops offensive struggles continued on Tuesday evening in Amarillo as they dropped a 3-2 decision to the Honey Hunters. A solo home run from David Petrovski in the bottom of the eighth was the difference as the Hops lost for the fourth straight game.

Art Mason got this one off to a great start hitting the first pitch of the game into the right field bleachers to give Flagstaff the early 1-0 lead. They would increase that lead to 2-0 in the top of the fifth on a solo home run from Forrest Owen, and with Sam Herzog dealing on the mound. It looked like they may break their losing streak.

But the Honey Hunters got back-to-back solo home runs from Kevin Tincher and Leif Radford in the bottom half of the fifth to tie the ball game.

The Hops offense went absolutely silent over the last four innings, managing just one hit and that led to another very frustrating loss. This team has suddenly gone into a funk where they cannot get any hits with runners in scoring position and they cannot hit lefties at all.

Sam Herzog was once again fantastic, except for the fifth inning lapse. He went 6 1/3 innings, scattering nine hits and allowing the two solo home runs. He struck out eight and did not walk a batter. The Mountain League’s ERA leader saw his ERA bump up just a fraction to 2.22.

Oliver Benedict (3-3) took the loss, allowing that eighth inning home run.

Gerry Pines (1-0) got credit for the win as he pitched the eighth and Dane Radatz pitched the ninth to earn his 20th save.

Leandro Lugo had to leave the game in the bottom of the first inning as he pulled his hamstring diving for a baseball. He will be headed to the 10-day Injured List. The club will recall rookie Kiko Pressley from Triple-A Albuquerque to take Lugo’s place on the 26-man roster.

The Hops dropped a 5-4 decision on Wednesday evening to run their losing streak to a season high five games. Daryl Sweet led the Honey Hunters offensively, going 1 for 3 with a homer and two RBIs in the victory.

Flagstaff grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second on a solo home run from Roberto Geronimo, his 22nd on the year.

The Honey Hunters struggled early, but would get to Robert Francis in the fourth, scoring four times. After getting the first batter out, things went downhill for Francis. He gave up a one-out double to Bradley York. Then David Petrovski lined a single to center to score York and tie the ball game. Petrovski would steal second and advance to third on a fly out. Wesley Watson then tripled home Petrovski and scored on a Daryl Sweet two-run homer to make it 4-1.

Flagstaff responded with three of their own to tie it in the top of the fifth. Forrest Owen doubled to center with one-out. Arturo Mardones would reach on an infield single. Newly called up Kiko Pressley then lined a single to right, scoring Owen. Mardones would score on a wild pitch to cut the lead to 4-3. Art Mason then doubled home Pressley to tie the ballgame at 4-4.

The tie was short lived though as the Honey Hunters would score in the bottom half thanks to some very fortunate luck. Jesus Baez doubled to left with two-outs and advanced to third on a ground ball to first that deflected off of Josh Ortega. Pedro Macias came on in relief of Francis and David Petrovski then lined a single off the body of first baseman Josh Ortega, scoring Baez as the Honey Hunters took the lead.

The Honey Hunters bullpen then went to work, getting the final nine outs without allowing a hit. It got a little exciting in the ninth as Rodney Millar opened the inning by reaching on an error. Roberto Geronimo then launched a long foul ball that would have been a home run but it just drifted foul. He then bounced into a 5-4-3 double play and Josh Ortega struck out to end the ball game.

Ryan Walker (1-2) picked up the win for Amarillo, going six innings and allowing four runs on six hits. He struck out six and did not walk a batter. Dane Radatz picked up the save, his 21st.

Robert Francis (4-5) took the loss. He only lasted 4 2/3 innings, allowing the five runs on seven hits. He struck out five and did not issue a walk. The bullpen was excellent as usual, not allowing a run over the final 3 1/3 innings, while striking out six. Pedro Macias and Peter Gorzelski were the two relievers used.

In the finale, it was another heartbreaking loss for the Hops as they dropped a 6-5 decision. Todd Hughes came through for the Honey Hunters, going 2 for 3 with a double, home run and two RBIs.

Flagstaff once again grabbed an early lead as solo home runs from Forrest Owen and Art Mason gave them a 2-0 lead in the third. For Mason, it was his 17th on the campaign.

The Honey Hunters would get one back in the fourth on a Floyd sacrifice fly. They would take the lead in the fifth, with all three runs coming with two-outs. Hughes homered to left to tie the game at 2-2. Bradley York then singled back up the middle and Wallace blasted a two-run shot to right to make it 4-2.

But the Hops would chip away. Oscar Aleman knocked in Robbie Westbrook with an RBI single in the sixth, after Westbrook had tripled. Then Emmitt Hampton ripped a solo home run in the seventh to tie the game at 4-4.

But once again, the Hops blew it. Oliver Benedict came on in relief and walked Tincher. Tincher then stole second and score on an RBI double from Hughes to put the Honey Hunters back in front 5-4. They would add a huge insurance run in the bottom of the eighth. David Petrovski drew a walk, stole second and scored on a two-out RBI double from Wallace.

The Hops made things interesting in the ninth against closer Dane Radatz. Roberto Geronimo doubled to open the inning and advanced to third on a Emmitt Hampton single to left. After Josh Ortega struck out, Forrest Owen hit a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Geronimo to cut the lead to one. Radatz then hung a 2-1 curveball to pinch hitter Rodney Millar, but all he could do was pop it up into deep left to end the game.

Oliver Benedict (3-4) took the loss, allowing the run in the seventh that put the Honey Hunters up. Benitez made his first start for Flagstaff, filling in for the injured Angelo Chacin, and he pitched pretty well. He went six innings, allowing the four runs on seven hits, but he struck out nine and did not walk a batter.

The Honey Hunters used six pitchers in the game with reliever Johnnie Delgado picking up the win. Dan Radatz was able to close it out for his 22nd save, and third of the series.

The Hops (35-40) will now head to Surprise for a three game weekend series with the Saguaros (41-35).

Around the League: Yuma scored four times in the bottom of the ninth to walk it off against first place Fort Worth 11-10. The Dust Devils were led by veteran Daniel Tanana, who had a home run and drove in six runs. Fort Worth’s Carmona tossed a complete game three hitter, striking out seven and walking three, while allowing just one run in a Kings 5-1 victory over Yuma.

Mesa’s Palmer tossed a complete game shutout, allowing just four hits and striking out eight in a 3-0 victory over Yuma. Red hot Gilbert scored three times in the twelfth inning to defeat Phoenix 8-6. Tristan Ryan doubled, homered and drove in two for the Barnstormers in the victory.

        June 26: Saguaros 6, Hops 1

Surprise, AZ (AP) - The slumping Flagstaff Hops dropped two of three to the suddenly red-hot Surprise Saguaros. After winning the opener to break a six-game losing streak, the Hops lost the last two as they continue to sink down the standings.

The Hops finally broke their six game losing streak on Friday night with a 9-6 victory over the Surprise Saguaros. The Hops hit four home runs and scored five times in the top of the eighth to end their season high losing streak.

Robbie Westbrook hit a solo home run in the third to kick things off and put the Hops up 1-0. The Saguaros would respond with back-to-back solo homers of their own in the bottom of the fourth by Tim Ferriera and Alberto Ruiz to take the lead 2-1.

Robbie Westbrook would put the Hops back in front in the top of the fifth with a two-out, two-run single that scored Forrest Owens and Arturo Mardones. They would add to their lead in the sixth thanks to a Phillip Choi solo home run, his first on the year.

The Saguaros, who have been playing very well as of late, would not go away. In the bottom half of the seventh, Ferreira would hit his second home run of the game. This one was a two-run shot to tie it up at 4-4.

Flagstaff would immediately respond, scoring five in the top of the eighth. Rodney Millar lined an RBI single, then Emmitt Hampton and Forrest Owen each hit two-run homers to put the Hops up 9-6. The Saguaros would draw closer with a two-run home run of their own from Ken Hollinger, but it wasn’t enough.

Vic Miller came on in the ninth to lock down his 17th save. Miguel Asencio earned the victory out of the bullpen to improve to (7-2). Shoe Lace O-tying lasted six innings, allowing three runs on ten hits. He struck out four and walked three.

On Saturday afternoon, the Saguaros rallied from a 4-0 deficit and came roaring back for a 5-4 victory. The Saguaros hit four home runs, scoring all five runs after the fifth inning.

Flagstaff would grab a 1-0 lead in the first inning, after Skyler Lyons led off the game with a triple. He would score on a Robbie Westbrook sacrifice fly. The Hops would increase their lead to 3-0 in the fourth on a Josh Ortega RBI single and Forrest Owen sacrifice fly. Emmitt Hampton would add a solo home run in the sixth to put the Hops up 4-0 with Ryan Pressley on the mound and in control.

But the Saguaros would strike for four in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game. Harry Justice homered to open the inning. Then Ricardo Rodriguez and Greg Duke would hit back-to-back homers to tie the game at 4-4. Rodriguez’s homer was a two run shot.

Tim Ferriera would then homer in the seventh off of Pressley to put Surprise in front 5-4.

Ray Russell would pick up the win out of the bullpen for the Saguaros, with Maury Keith picking up his 20th save. Ryan Pressley took the loss for Flagstaff, going seven innings and allowing five runs on just six hits. He struck out five and did not issue a walk.

In the finale, Alberto Ruiz homered twice and drove in four runs as Surprise won easily 6-1.

Josh Ortega homered in the second inning to put Flagstaff in front early. But that lead was short lived as the Saguraos struck right back with a run in the bottom half.

The Saguaros would then score four times in the bottom of the fifth off of Sam Herzog, chasing him from the ball game. Edmundo Ramos hit a solo shot and Alberto Ruiz provided the dagger with a three-run shot. Ruiz would add a solo homer in the eighth to make it 6-1.

Sam Herzog (7-3) took the loss, allowing five runs on seven hits in just 4 2/3 innings. He struck out four and walked two. Thomas Salinas (5-4) picked up the win for Surprise. He went seven innings and allowed one run on six hits.

The Hops (36-42) wrapped up the road trip going (1-5) and will now return home to face first place Colorado Springs beginning tomorrow evening. The Hops are just (6-12) in their last 18 games.

Around the League: Chandler’s Singleton hit a solo home run in the eleventh as the Chiefs slipped past Glendale 1-0. July 1-3: PRESCOTT (35-49) @ FLAGSTAFF (38-46)
                Stadium: AutoZone Park (Capacity: 9,486)

                July 1: Hops 5, Hot Shots 3
                July 2: Hot Shots 2, Hops 1
                July 3: Hot Shots 8, Hops 3

Flagstaff, AZ (AP) - The Flagstaff Hops struggles continue as they drop two of three to last place Prescott to close out the home stand at (2-4). The Hops have now slipped 10 1/2 games out of first and all the way down into fourth place in the ML West.

The Hops opened up the three game weekend series with a 5-3 victory over the Hot Shots. They hit three home runs and got a strong pitching performance from Ryan Pressley to open the series.

After falling behind 2-0 in the third, the Hops bats came alive. An Art Mason RBI double, followed by a Robbie Westbrook RBI single tied the game at 2-2.

Solo home runs from Josh Ortega (12) and Roberto Geronimo (23) in the fourth put the Hops up 4-2.

Paul Knapp would hit a solo shot off of Ryan Pressley in the seventh to cut the lead to 4-3. But Arturo Mardones (8) answered in the bottom half to put the Hop back up by two.

Ryan Pressley (4-8) picked up the win, working 6 1/3 innings and allowing three runs on six hits. He struck out six and walked just one. The bullpen worked 2 2/3 innings of hitless relief with Vic Miller picking up his 18th save.

On Saturday evening, the Hot Shots got a key pitching performance from Kilby McAlister as they edged the Hops 2-1. McAlister went seven innings, allowing just one run on four base hits while striking out five to pick up his third win on the season.

Prescott would grab the lead in the third thanks to some aggressive base running from Angel Rodriguez. He singled, then stole second and third. Khris Kovach would drive him in with a single to left and the Hot Shots had a 1-0 lead. They would extend that lead to 2-0 in the seventh thanks to a solo home run from Matt Olsen. It was his 11th on the season.

Flagstaff would score their lone run in the ball game in the bottom half of the seventh on a solo home run from Josh Ortega. It was his 13th on the season. But they would not be able to score again as they dropped their 45th game on the year.

Sam Herzog (7-4) took the loss, going six innings and allowing one run on five hits. He struck out three and walked none.

In the finale, the Hot Shots hit four home runs and pulled away late for an 8-3 victory. Catcher Darren Gomes led the way with two solo home runs for the Hot Shots.

Flagstaff (38-46) would grab an early lead in this one thanks to an RBI double from Leandro Lugo in the first inning. The Hot Shots would get that back in the top of the second on a Rodriguez RBI double, but Robert Francis wiggled his way out of a jam, leaving runners at second and third.

The Hops would retake the lead in the bottom half as Shoe Lace O’Tying, getting the start at DH, homered to left. The 440’ shot was his first big league homer. Manager Bud Black said that he couldn’t ignore the batting practice session that O’Tying has been having lately and rolled the dice by putting him at DH. O’Tying went 2 for 4 with a homer and double. But that was about the only highlight on Sunday afternoon.

The Hot Shots would take the lead for good in the fifth with back-to-back homers from Khris Kovach and Josh Carroll with two-outs. Darren Gomes would make it 4-2 in the seventh with a solo blast off of reliever Mark Wirth.

A Forrest Owen solo homer in the bottom half of the seventh cut the lead to 4-3.

But the Hot Shots would put the Hops away in the top of the eighth with an RBI double from Olsen and a two-run home run from Paul Knapp. Darren Gomes would add a second solo home run in the ninth as the Hot Shots cruised to an 8-3 victory.

The loss dropped Flagstaff into fourth in the ML West, behind suddenly red-hot Salt Lake.

The Hops will now head to Colorado Springs for a quick two-game series with the Snow Sox before heading to Prescott for a four-game weekend series with the Hot Shots.

Around the League: Salt River’s Mel O’Leary pitched 8 2/3 shutout innings, striking out 10 and walking five as the Rafters won 7-0 in Tucson. Fort Worth scored seven times in the bottom of the ninth to stun Long Beach 7-6 at Globe Life Park. The teams are tied for the best record in the IBL at (49-33).

West Texas outlasted Santa Fe 4-3 in a 20-inning marathon. An Ernesto Lucero RBI double in the 20th won it for the Bison in the longest game in IBL history.

TRADE: Gilbert has traded away reliever Ryan Collins to the Chandler Chiefs in exchange for starting pitcher Jim Klein and reliever Rene Guillen. The 26-year-old Collins, in the final year of his contract, was the top reliever on the Barnstormers, who currently sit just 1 1/3 games back of Salt River in the DL East. He had made 40 appearances with an ERA of 4.38 with four blown saves and WHIP of 1.49. He will likely be a free agent at the end of the season if Chandler cannot resign him to an extension. Coming back they get 35-year-old Jim Klein, and 31-year-old Rene Guillen. Klein will go to Triple-A Norfolk and Guillen will slide into the Gilbert bullpen. In 29 appearances with the Chiefs, he had an ERA of 4.00 and a (5-1) record to go along with a 1.20 WHIP with 38 strikeouts and 19 walks.

Yuma has traded starter Dave Kaiser to the Mariachis in exchange for catcher Mike Kish and left fielder Tristan Pompey.

Aldo Osuna (2-2) picked up the win despite the blown save. Starter John Benitez was once again pretty good. He went five plus innings, before leaving after taking a line drive off of his rib cage. He allowed three runs (two earned), on four hits while striking out three.

In Tuesday evenings finale, Shoe-Lace O’Tying and Sam Gonzalez hooked up in a pitcher’s duel with Gonzalez getting the better of the Hops as the Snow Sox won 3-1.

Gonzalez improved to (13-2) and lowered his ERA to 2.60 as he went 6 2/3 innings, allowing one run on just three hits. The lone run was a Josh Ortega solo home run allowed in the third inning.

Prescott, AZ (AP) - The slumping Hops split a four game weekend series with last place Prescott as their playoff hopes continue to sink. After winning the first two games, the Hops dropped both weekend games and now sit ten games back of first place Colorado Springs.

In the opener, Sean Pressley went 7 1/3 innings, allowing just one run in a 3-1 victory for the Hops over the Hot Shots. The lone run allowed was a solo shot from Darren Gomes in the eighth inning. Pressley struck out six and did not walk a batter as he picked up his fifth win on the year.

Arturo Mardones homered in the third. The solo shot was his ninth on the year. Oscar Aleman added an RBI double as the Hops moved out to a 2-0 lead. They would increase that lead to 3-0 in the eighth on a Josh Ortega RBI double.

On Friday evening, the Hops pulled out a 2-1 victory behind another strong pitching performance from Sam Herzog. He tossed seven innings, allowing just one run and striking out five to pick up his team leading eighth victory.

An Angel Rodriguez RBI single in the second inning was the only run allowed as Flagstaff won their second straight.

Robbie Westbrook drove in both of the Flagstaff runs. He ripped an RBI double in the fifth and another RBI double in the seventh.

Vic Miller came on to lock down the Hot Shots in the ninth to pick up his 21st save.

On Saturday afternoon the Hops blew a late 4-1 lead a watched as the Hot Shots walked it off, 6-5. Josh Carroll’s RBI single with none out in the bottom of the ninth helped Prescott rally for the win.

Flagstaff built a 4-1 lead in the sixth inning thanks to the long ball as Oscar Aleman, Leandro Lugo and Rodney Millar all homered for the Hops.

But the Hot Shots would get two back in the bottom of the sixth, thanks to a sacrifice fly and a run that was walked in. The Hot Shots would tie the game in the seventh on another sacrifice fly, this one by Wilson. The Hot Shots would take the lead in the eighth as Jamie Case homered off of Aldo Osuna.

But Forrest Owen would hit a solo home run with two-outs and two strikes in the top of the ninth off of closer Xavier Doyle to tie the game at 5-5.

Samuel Espinoza came on to pitch for the Hops in the bottom half, giving up a leadoff double to Matt Olson. He would walk Juan Corona and then gave up the game winning RBI single to Josh Carroll. Carroll went 2 for 4 with a solo home run and two RBIs in the win.

In the finale, the Hot Shots hit four home runs as they pounded the Hops 6-1. Josh Carroll and Jamie Case each hit two-run home runs late to blow open a close ball game and help Prescott earn a split of the four game weekend series.

Flagstaff grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the second on Josh Ortega’s 16th home run on the year. But that would be it for the Flagstaff offense as they snoozed through another afternoon game with just four other hits.

John Benitez (0-1) took the loss, tossing six innings and allowing three runs on five hits. He struck out four and did not issue any walks.

Austin Morales (1-3) picked up the win out of the Prescott bullpen after starter Ken Smith left with leg soreness in the second inning. The Hot Shots used six pitchers in the win.

The Las Vegas Nuggets have acquired Salt Lake Chukars catcher Freddie Hewitt in exchange for Starting pitcher David Arturo, top prospect left fielder Darell McCloud and centerfielder Jimmy Reyes. The 23-year-old Hewitt was hitting .247 with eight home runs and 27 RBIs in 66 games for the Chukars. Mid-July Power Rankings are out with a week to go before the All-Star Break.

                        1. Fort Worth Kings (51-40) (+3): The Kings top the power rankings for the first time. They lead the league in run differential at +76 even though they are just (3-7) over their last ten games. They are led by Randy Klaus who is putting up MVP numbers, hitting .272 with 27 home runs and 74 RBIs, both league highs. This pitching staff should lead this team deep into October.

                        2. Las Vegas Nuggets (51-40) (+3): The Nuggets have moved to within 1 1/2 games of first place Long Beach. The Nuggets are in the top 5 in most offensive categories led by first baseman John Lopez who is hitting .296 with 13 homers and 69 RBIs. Starter Stanley Taguchi is (11-5) with an ERA of 2.59 in 121 innings of work with 110 strikeouts.

                        3. Long Beach Surf Dawgs (52-38) (-2): A rough month for the Surf Dawgs sees them slip to third in the power rankings. The Surf Dawgs have a well balanced lineup with five players with at least 14 homers. Steve Willis anchors the staff and is the frontrunner for Desert League Cy Young with an (11-1) record and ERA of 2.49 with 134 strikeouts in 126.1 innings.

                        4. Colorado Springs Snow Sox (51-39) (+3): The Snow Sox are cruising in the Mountain League West. Veteran Mike Rock is hitting .269 with 21 homers and 55 RBIs with Donnell Marcus right behind him with 18 homers and 59 RBIs to lead this offense. Sam Gonzalez (13-2) has a 2.60 ERA in the rarified air of Colorado Springs and is making his case for a Cy Young.

                        5. El Paso Blue Rocks (50-41) (-1): The Blue Rocks slip one spot by no fault of their own. They are a solid team in a very tough division. They rely on speed and lead the league by a wide margin in stolen bases with 155. They have six players with at least 10 stolen bases! First baseman Josh Hawk has 19 homers and 73 RBIs. Right fielder Tommie Bennett is a dark horse for MVP hitting .281 with 14 homers, 55 RBIs and 25 stolen bases.

                        6. Gilbert Barnstormers (51-42) (+8): One of the darlings of the preseason, the Barnstormers got off to a slow start, but they are red hot and sit atop the Desert League East. Steve Heupel (.299, 25 HRs, 58 RBIs) and Armando Bermudez (9-3, 2.01 ERA, 108 K’s) have this team looking like a legit contender.

                        7. Surprise Saguaros (51-41) (+8): Another team making a big leap is Surprise. The Saguaros now sit atop the Desert League Central, moving past a slumping Glendale. Ken Hollinger leads the Saguaros hitting .337 with 21 home runs and 57 RBIs.

                        8. Henderson Silver Knights (45-47) (-2): sitting in a division with Long Beach and Las Vegas is tough, but the Silver Knights are a +70 in run differential and could make a late season push for a wild card. They have the offense humming led by Albert Zambrano. He is hitting .269 with 20 home runs and 62 RBIs.

                        9. Glendale Desert Dogs (48-43) (-6): the slumping Desert Dogs are sliding down the rankings. Dan Moore (9-4, 3.75) is trying to keep the team in the wild card hunt.

                        10. San Antonio Javelinas (49-43) (-2): The Javelinas sit atop the Mountain League Wild Card standings and it really is due to solid pitching both from their starting staff and bullpen. Young shortstop Brian Gonzalez is having a year, hitting .296 with 10 homers, 42 RBIs and 29 stolen bases.

                        11. Roswell Aliens (49-43) (+5): The Aliens are tied with San Antonio for the ML Wild Card and their offense is humming. Danny Watson (.273, 23 HRs, 67 RBIs) and Blake Pacinelli (.334, 23 HRs, 71 RBIs) are leading the way.

                        12. St. George Archers (47-44) (NC): The Archers keep hanging around in the Wild Card chase and are within arms length of Colorado Springs in the ML West. No superstars on the team, but a solid group. Jamaal McCormick, Sam Robinson and Scottie Hager form the core of a team that should stick around all year in the race.

                        13. Mesa Solar Sox (46-46) (-4): The Solar Sox slip a bit this month as they sit in fourth in the DL East, but are just 4 1/2 back of first place. Young phenom John Nichols is still red hot, hitting .324 with 19 homers and 60 RBIs to lead the team, along with his 17 stolen bases.

                        14. Salt River Rafters (47-42) (-4): The Rafters have lost seven straight and now sit in second in the DL East. First baseman Tuan Santana is keeping the team in the race, hitting .283 with 20 homers and 54 RBIs.

                        15. Santa Fe Silver Bullets (46-43) (+10): The Silver Bullets are making a strong push up the rankings and are just 1 1/2 games out of a Wild Card spot. No real standouts, but a solid lineup and decent pitching is keeping them alive in the toughest division in the IBL.

                        16. Phoenix Firebirds (46-45) (+1): The addition of Juan Chavez from Salt Lake gives this team a boost as they try and stay alive in the Wild Card race. Chavez is hitting .309 with 20 home runs and 55 RBIs. Angelo Velez is quietly having a nice season. He is (8-5) with an ERA of 2.45 with 110 strikeouts in 110 innings of work.

                        17. Austin Fire Frogs (48-43) (+2): The Fire Frogs sit in third in the DL East and are led by one of our favorites, Hulk Hoagie. He has 15 home runs and 49 RBIs and that beautiful goatee.

                        18. Albuquerque Mariachis (46-44) (+2): The Mariachis could be higher as they sit just 3 1/2 back of El Paso in the tough DL Central. Speed and a solid bullpen have the Mariachis in a good position as the season nears the halfway point.

                        19. Goodyear Jack Rabbits (43-49) (+2): The Jack Rabbits have a +3 run differential, yet sit in fourth place in the DL Central, eight games back of Surprise. They lead the league with 772 strikeouts and have three pitchers with over 100. They also lead the IBL with a .274 batting average.

                        20. Tucson Roadrunners (46-46) (-2): Monte Farnetti leads the team with 19 home runs and 62 RBIs for a team near the bottom in most offensive categories: 26th in BA, 24th in runs scored, 24th in home runs, 27th in slugging, 27th in OBP.

                        21. Amarillo Honey Hunters (44-47) (+1): The Honey Hunters near the bottom in strikeouts and most hitting categories. Need to turn that around if they want to stay close to the wild card race.

                        22. West Texas Bison (43-49) (+1): Last place in the ML East, but reason for hope as 18-year-old ace Lowell Alan Pressley has been living up to the hype, (9-5, 4.02) with 111 strikeouts in 118 innings….but 51 walks.

                        23. Flagstaff Hops (41-49) (-12): if you are paying attention, this team struggles with men in scoring position. Clutch is not a word that describes this team. It is long ball or bust for a team with hopes of a late season wild card push.

                        24. Salt Lake Chukars (41-48) (+4): The Chukars seem to be in sell off mode, building towards the future. Thor Odinson is back from injury and looking good, posting a 1.84 ERA in nine starts.

                        25. Chandler Chiefs (43-48 (+2): one reason to watch the Chiefs, Rick Singleton. The first baseman is hitting .303 with 18 homers and 62 RBIs. The rest of the team….not so much.

                        26. Prescott Hot Shots (39-52) (-2): The Hot Shots are a frisky last place team but pitching is holding them back.

                        27. Rio Rancho Owlz (42-50) (-14): The Owlz have slid down the ranking just like the Hops. Young Rollie Flingers is worth the price of admission though, with his 115 strikeouts in 120 innings of work….and that mustache.

                        28. San Diego Seals (37-55) (-2): this team has talent but is in a brutal division with three powerhouse clubs. They are (9-24) against the DL West, (28-31) against everyone else. Youngsters Matt Mulder (.301, 17 HRs, 49 RBIs) and ace Matt Campbell (6-7, 3.60 ERA, 132 K’s) continue to impress.

                        29. Yuma Dust Devils (34-56) (+1): This team is on the upswing and it is thanks to its offense. This team looked like a lock for worst team in the league, until Scottsdale said hold my beer. (7-3) over their last ten and they are a bit frisky.

                        30. Scottsdale Scorpions (38-52) (-1): This team is a train wreck with a -80 run differential. Starting pitching is awful and hitting isn’t much better. The second highest payroll in the league…..look for some salary dumps as we get closer to the trade deadline.

Flagstaff, AZ (AP) - The Flagstaff Hops returned home and came away with a huge four game sweep of division rival St. George. They tossed two shutouts as they have now won six of their last eight.

Shoe Lace O’Tying was once again dominant as he tossed a complete game three-hit shutout in the Hops 1-0 victory over the Archers in Monday evening’s opener. He struck out eight and did not issue a walk as he improved to (7-4).

The lone run in the game came on an RBI groundout in the second inning by Rodney Millar.

Lamont Lawrence (6-7) was the hard luck loser for St. George. He pitched five innings, allowing one run on six hits.

Robbie Westbrook went 3 for 3 with a double in the game.

On Tuesday evening, the Hops rallied from an early 3-0 deficit to walk it off in eleven innings, 4-3. A Rodney Millar ground out up the middle scored Skyler Lyons with the game winner as the Hops won for the fourth time in their last six.

Rodney Millar was the hero in this one, hitting two solo home runs, including the game tying one in the bottom of the ninth, before knocking in the game winner. Millar now has 23 home runs on the season.

Aldo Osuna (3-2) picked up the win out of the bullpen. He pitched the tenth and eleventh innings, allowing two hits, but no runs. Ryan Pressley was pretty good after a rough start, allowing three runs on nine hits over seven innings. He struck out four and walked two.

Sam Goodman (0-2) took the loss for the Archers and was saddled with the blown save. He worked the ninth, tenth and eleventh, allowing two runs on two hits. He struck out four. The blown save was just his second on the season in 27 chances.

Wednesday evening, the Hops got another great pitching performance from Sam Herzog as they shutout the Archers 5-0. Herzog tossed seven shutout innings, allowing just two hits while striking out five as he picked up his ninth victory.

The Hops would break a scoreless tie in the fifth on a Donny Roland RBI single.

Flagstaff would extend the lead to 2-0 in the seventh on a solo home run from Robbie Westbrook, his 13th on the season. They would then blow it open in the eighth with a solo home run from Skyler Lyons and a two-run shot from Oscar Aleman.

Robbie Westbrook went 3 for 4 with a double, home run, RBI and two runs scored as he makes a late push to make the All-Star team. Skyler Lyons went 3 for 3 with a double and home run.

Pedro Macias earned the save, getting the final six outs, for his first on the season.

The finale was a home run fest as the teams combined for 10 home runs in an afternoon game with the wind blowing out as Flagstaff completed the sweep with a 9-7 victory. A Forrest Owen grand slam in the second inning keyed the victory as Flagstaff slowly inches its way back into the wild card conversation.

Robert Francis (5-7) got the start and win for Flagstaff but he struggled big time, allowing five runs, all on solo home runs, and seven hits in just five innings of work. The bullpen was able to nail down the win with Vic Miller picking up his 22nd save.

Down 2-0 in the second inning, Forrest Owen hit a grand slam to right off of Geraldo Rodriguez to put the Hops up 4-2. Arturo Mardones would then single home Shoe Lace O’Tying, who doubled, to make it 5-2.

But the Archers (47-48), losers of six straight, would hit three solo homers in the fourth to tie the ball game at 5-5, including Steve Marquez’s second of the game.

Roberto Geronimo hit a solo home run to open the bottom half of the fourth to put Flagstaff up for good, at 6-5. They would build their lead to 9-5 before Jamaal McCormick blasted a two-run shot off of Mark Wirth in the eighth to cut the lead to 9-7.

The Hops hit four home runs in the game: Aleman (13), Owen (12), Mardones (10) and Geronimo (25).

The Hops (45-49) will now close out the first half of the season with a three game series against the Albuquerque Mariachis (48-46) starting tomorrow evening.

Around the League: San Diego’s Maurice Johnson (5-6) pitched eight scoreless innings, allowing just three hits while striking out seven in a 1-0 victory over Long Beach. Roswell’s Blake Pacinelli blasted three home runs and drove in six as the Aliens clobbered Colorado Springs 11-4.

TRADES: The Saguaros have acquired 30-year-old star shortstop Jaime Hernandez from the Yuma Dust Devils in exchange for centerfielder Johnnie Doyle and a prospect, catcher Paul Ellis. Hernandez was hitting .325 with seven homers, 38 RBIs and 12 stolen bases for the Dust Devils. Ellis is an A-rated prospect in the low minors. Doyle will be slotted into a crowded outfield but should start.

San Diego has traded starting pitcher/long reliever Felipe De Jesus to Albuquerque for three prospects in second baseman James Martinez, third baseman Malcom Nunez and shortstop Will Holland.

Las Vegas has acquired left fielder Herb Clark from Mesa in exchange for closer Lamont Vann and starting pitcher Sonny Erdman. Clark is a 24-year-old in the final year of his contract. He is hitting .253 with seven home runs and 36 RBIs to go along with 13 steals. The Nuggets then traded away two more prospects for Flagstaff closer Ian Gonzalez as they sent 18 -year-old third baseman Michael Kelly and 21-year-old shortstop Osleivis Basabe back.

Series30_22 Shoe Lace O’Tying is turning into a superstar.

                              July 15-17: ALBUQUERQUE (49-48) @ FLAGSTAFF (47-50)
                              Stadium: AutoZone Park (Capacity: 9,486)

                              July 15: Hops 6, Mariachis 4
                              July 16: Mariachis 6, Hops 5 (10)
                              July 17: Hops 8, Mariachis 5

Flagstaff, AZ (AP) - The Flagstaff Hops ended the first half of the year by taking two of three from Albuquerque and winning seven of their last eight as they head into the All-Star break.

The suddenly red-hot Flagstaff Hops won their fifth straight game on Friday night as they defeated the Albuquerque Mariachis 6-4. Rodney Millar had himself a game, going 4 for 4 with three solo home runs and a two-run go ahead double in the bottom of the eighth to help pace the victory.

The Hops led this one 4-0 after six innings thanks to Millar’s three solo home runs and a solo homer from Arturo Mardones. Millar, who hit two homers on Tuesday, now is up to 26 on the season. That leaves him one behind the leaders in the Mountain League.

John Benitez worked six scoreless innings before leaving the game. He allowed five hits and struck out four before Bud Black went to his bullpen. Peter Gorzelski came on and could not record an out, allowing two hits and walking one before giving way to Oliver Benedict. Benedict would give up a huge two-out, two run single that allowed the Mariachis to tie the game at 4-4.

In the bottom of the eighth, Rodney Millar would strike again as he came up with two on and two out. He lined a double into the right centerfield gap to score both Roberto Geronimo and Robbie Westbrook. Millar would finish with five RBIs in the win.

Vic Miller came on and locked down his 23rd save as the Hops moved back to within three games of .500.

On Saturday afternoon, the Mariachis rallied for a 6-5 victory in extra innings to put an end to the Hops season high five game winning streak. Jaevan Cooper’s two-run home run in the top of the tenth proved to be the winner for the visitors.

The Hops jumped out to an early lead with two in the top of the first inning thanks to Art Mason and Oscar Aleman solo home runs. Thomas Estrado would get one back in the top of the second for the Mariachis off of Flagstaff ace Shoe-Lace O’Tying.

Red-hot Rodney Millar blasted his 27th on the season in the fourth to put the Hops up 3-1. It was his sixth home run since Tuesday.

The Mariachis would get to O’Tying though as he did not bring his best stuff on Saturday. A Rodriguez RBI single in the fifth cut the lead to 3-2. Jaevan Cooper then singled home Reyes in the sixth to tie the game at 3-3. The Mariachis would take the lead in the seventh on a fielder’s choice as Vargas beat out what would have been an inning eneding double play with the bases loaded. That allowed Beckman to score.

Roberto Geronimo would tie it up in the bottom half, hitting his 26th on the year and it was a brand new ball game.

The Mariachis would retake the lead in the top of the tenth on the Jaevan Cooper moon shot. It landed an estimated 460 feet and that two-run shot put the Mariachis up for good. Emmitt Hampton would get a pinch-hit RBI single in the bottom half and Art Mason ripped a ball that seemed destined to tie the game but Swearer made a diving catch to save the game for Albuquerque.

Also Osuna (3-3) took the loss as he walked Estrada to open the tenth. The Hops grounded into three double plays in the game, ending scoring threats.

In the finale, the Hops rallied from a 4-0 deficit to win it 8-5. A Leandro Lugo three-run home run in the sixth inning broke a 5-5 tie and sent the Hops on to victory.

Albuquerque (49-48) looked like they may run away and hide early on as they score three in the first and one in the second to grab a 4-0 lead off of Ryan Pressley. But he would settle down and in the middle innings, the Hops’ bats came alive.

In the fourth, white-hot Rodney Millar homered to left, his 28th on the year and seventh this week to make it 4-1. The Hops would then score three times in the fifth to tie it. Art Mason doubled home Josh Ortega. Leandro Lugo then singled home Forrest Owen and Mason to tie the game at 4-4.

Jeffrey Horner would hit a solo home run off of Pressley to open the sixth as the Mariachis retook the lead at 5-4.

But Leandro Lugo’s three run shot off of Felipe De Jesus in the bottom half but the Hops ahead/ Lugo went 2 for 4 in the game with the home run and he drove in five.

Ryan Pressley (6-8) would get the win despite the rough start. He went six innings, allowing five runs on ten hits. He struck out six and did not walk a batter.
