    Ben Smith and the Dolphins
    drop two straight games in
    conference play this week.

And make that 10 straight losses to Belmont......

Coach Roberts probably said it best after the Dolphins' 78-53 loss to Belmont this past week. He refered to his teams' performance as "piss poor." Hey, those are his words not mine, but I agree 100%. Nothing was more frustrating than watching the Dolphins last Thursday night when they seemingly could not do anything right. They couldn't shoot, couldn't pass, couldn't play defense, couldn't score....that's just a bad combination! But this loss is even more frustrating because it was to Belmont, who the Dolphins have now droped 10 straight games to. No need to worry however, because this can't possibly go on forever.....can it? The Dolphins will get another chance to end this dreadful streak when they play them at their house 3 weeks from now.

    Next up

The Dolphins have 2 games this week, both against the same opponent. East Tennessee State is ranked the # 1 team in the Atlantic Sun once again and they are stronger than ever. They are coming in at 13-8 (3-0 in the conference). The good news is that Courney Pigrim has graduated and the Dolphins do not have to worry about guarding him. The former ETSU point guard torched the Dolphins in both of their meetings last season. I am personally glad to see him gone. The bad news, 3 of their starters are averaging over 12 points a game and ETSU is still the same run and gun team that will try and blow their opponents out of the gym. Their up tempo style still gives the rest of the Atlantic Sun fits. Their 3 conference games have all been decided by 20 points or more, including a 25 point victory over Campbell who the Dolphins lost to earlier last week. The Dolphins will definitely have to put out a much better effort than they did in their last 2 games.

      Controversial win for the Dolphins

(AP) Tevin Galvin hit an uncontested 15 footer with 5 seconds left on the clock that would put the Dolphins ahead 73-72. After the ensuing time out, Lemon Colbert blocked Adam Sollazzo's game winning shot attempt to preserve the win for Jacksonville.

The controversy occurred during the ETSU possession just before Galvin's game winning shot. With just 7 seconds left on the shot clock (17 seconds left in the game) and a one point lead, ETSU PF Isiah Brown drove the ball in the lane, jumped straight into the chest of Lehmon Colbert who was also in the air attempting to block his shot. The referee's whistle blew just as the ball went through the net. The call was a foul on...Brown. The charging call erased Brown's basket and also the chance to put ETSU up by 4 with the 'and 1' free throw which could very well have iced the game for the Buccaneers.

Ben Smith led the Dolphins with 22 points while Galvin finished with 12. Jacksonville improves to 12-9 overall (2-2 in the A-Sun) after two consecutive tough conference losses to Campbell and Belmont. These two teams meet again 2 nights from now in Jacksonville.

Yeah, EA needs to fix that. I hate when they call that. I didn't really hate it in that game though . I think the ref said that he pushed off with his forearm just before he jumped in the air...it was just a delayed whistle

Davis: Hello, and welcome to another edition of College Gameday. I'm Rece Davis, alongside Digger Phelps, Jay Bilas, and of course, Dick Vitale. Today, we will take a deeper look into the top 25, examine some of the top players of this college basketball season, and Dick Vitale will give us his Diaper Dandies for 2009.

But first, let's take a look at those TOP 25 teams....

            AP Top 25 Poll

            1. Florida............... 18-4 (6-3)
            2. Davidson ...........18-5 (7-3)
            3. Kansas ..............18-6 (8-3)
            4. Texas................ 18-4 (8-1)
            5. Georgia...............15-6 (8-1)
            6. Gonzaga............ 15-6 (5-1)
            7. Tulsa ..................18-5 (10-0)

            13. Northeastern .... .17-7 (7-4)
            14. Arkansas........... 17-9 (9-4)
            15. Illinois St........... 15-5 (8-1)
            16. New Orleans...... 17-3 (8-1)
            17. Kentucky............14-8 (6-3))
            18. Villanova ............11-6 (4-2)
            19. New Mexico .......14-8 (5-4)
            20. Temple.............. 14-9 (7-3)
            21. Tennessee........ 11-11 (3-6)
            22. Creighton........... 13-7 (4-5)
            23. Xavier................ 14-9 (5-5)
            24. Nevada .............. 12-8 (5-2)
            25. Alabama............. 14-8 (4-5)

........and guys, is it me or does something seem missing from the top 25???

Bilas: Wow, you're right Rece, something is missing and that's the ACC. I mean it's pretty remarkable when you actually think about it....no ACC team in the top 25?!! I mean when was the last time that happened? Last week we were talking about the lack of Big East teams in the top 25 and now we are talking NO ACC teams at all in the top 25 polls. This is really turning into another crazy college basketball season.

Vitale: Well Jay you're absolutely right. WHEN I FIRST SAW THE POLLS, I THOUGHT I WAS LOOKING AT THE TOP 25 FOR COLLEGE FOOTBALL. I MEAN LOOK AT ALL THOSE SEC TEAMS IN THERE!! I MEAN IT'S UNBELIEVABLE. AND CERTAINLY, WHEN YOU TALK ABOUT THE LACK OF ACC TEAMS IT REALLY MADE ME SAY WOW! I MEAN WOW! WHERE'S DUKE? WHERE'S NORTH CAROLINA? GEORGIA TECH? MARYLAND? BOSTON COLLEGE?? IT'S TRULY UNBELIEVEABLE HOW FAST THEY'VE FALLEN.

Phelps: Well we are usually talking about how many ACC teams are in the top 5 or 10. Or we are debating which is the better conference, the ACC or Big East. And so far this season, both conferences have been BIG disappointments.

Davis: Well we will certainly keep an eye on both conferences as the season continues.

Right now, we are going to take a quick commercial break and when we come back we will take a look at this season's top performers as well as the favorites to win the national player of the year award. And Dickey V will give us his list of Diaper Dandies for 2009. We're back after these messages.............

Davis: Welcome back. And now we will take a look at the top players so far this season....

And Digger, we'll start with you. Who has impressed you so far this year?

Phelps: Well for me it has been the play of the starting Center for the # 2 team in the country. When you mention Davidson, you automatically think Stephen Curry, and rightfully so. But it has really been the play of Ben Allison who has that team near the top of the polls.

                Ben Allison - C
                Sophmore

                16.3 ppg 8.4 rpg

I've also been impressed by the outstanding play of UNLV's super Sophmore, Brice Massamba. He's has helped the Runnin Rebels become a legitimate top 10 team in the country, even though they are currently ranked #11. But certainly look for this young man to help carry his team deep into the tournament.

                Brice Massamba - C Sophmore

                17.4 ppg 8.3 rpg

Bilas: Well Digger, as far as National Player of the Year candidates go, I am going to think alittle bit more outside of the box and say Stephen Curry and Blake Griffin. It was shocking to see both of these players come back for another year. Curry now a Senior and Griffin a Junior, both players have cemented themselves as the top 2 picks in the NBA draft I think. Curry is having the more successful year however, with his team ranked #2. Oklahoma has fallen as of late, but they will make the tournament. And don't be suprised if you see them have a nice little run in the tournament because of the play of Blake Griffin....he's that good.

                Blake Griffin - C
                Junior

                20.9 ppg 8.5 rpg

                Stephen Curry - SG
                Senior

                18.9 ppg 3.1 apg

Vitale: Well those are all great choices when you are talking about who should be National Player of the Year. You can also talk about Deon Thompson of North Carolina who's filled in nicely for Tyler Hansbrough. Or even Cole Aldrich of Kansas. Hey, the Jayhawks are well on their way to the Final Four once again this year. And it has been mostly because of the play of this young man. He's been ABSOLUTELY OUTSTANDING! AND YOU CERTAINLY CAN'T FORGET ABOUT JAJUAN JOHNSON OF PURDUE WHO'S AVERAGING OVER 18 POINTS PER GAME AND JUST UNDER 10 REBOUNDS. HE'S HAVING HIMSELF AN OUTSTANDING YEAR. ALL OF THESE PLAYERS ARE PTP'ers IN MY BOOK BABY!!!

Davis: Alright Dick, let's have a look at your Diaper Dandies for 2009.

                -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                Vitale's Top 5 Freshmen

                1. Mike Olsen - SF - Michigan (13.2 ppg) - 81 OVR

                2. Ben Hinton - C - Jacksonville (15.9 ppg 7.3 rpg) - 75 OVR

                3. Cameron Beasley - SF - UNLV (11.0 ppg) - 78 OVR

                4. Larry Dooley - SF - New Orleans (12.4 ppg 6.5 rpg) - 74 OVR

                5. Doug Perkins - C - South Alabama (15.5 ppg 8.1 rpg) - 76 OVR

Davis: Thank you Dick. Well, that will do it for this edition of College Gameday. We hope to see you all back here, same time, same place. For Digger Phelps, Jay Bilas, and Dick Vitale, I'm Rece Davis......so long everybody.

Actually I just copy what I see. He is actually listed as the #2 NATIONAL Freshman of the Year Candidate! (which is what Dicky V's list really is). I was suprised to even see him on the national list. Jacksonville is finally getting some respect!

                            ETSU gets revenge on
                            Dolphins

Ben Hinton posts up ETSU PF Isiah Brown in the first
game of the home at home series.

(Jacksonville, FL) -- After a controversial one point victory over the top team in the Atlantic Sun, the Jacksonville Dolphins were unable match the high scoring ETSU Buccaneers a second time losing big, 91-69.

The Dolphins could not control the tempo this time around as they allowed ETSU to run the ball up and down the court the entire night, something Coach Roberts did not want to let happen. "It was a point of emphasis to keep the pace to what I like to call a balanced pace. We just don't have the atheletes to keep up with this team when they are running like that. We did a good job in our last game against them, but not this time around," said coach Roberts.

Ben Smith led the way for the struggling Dolphins with 13 points. Micah Williams scored 23 for ETSU. The Dolphins drop to 2-3 in the conference (12-10 overall). They face Stetson in another home at home series coming up.

Furious comeback leads to JU win

(AP) Down by 22 points with 7:16 left to play, Ben Smith would help lead the Dolphins' improbable comeback to beat Stetson 81-80. Smith would start and finish the job by hitting 2 big 3-pointers that would start the run. Then, with 9 seconds left to play, gave the Dolphins their first and only lead of the game by getting by Stetson defenders for the open lay up. "It was great to get this win, especially on the road," said Smith after the game.

The Dolphins scored the games final 10 points. Stetson did not help their cause by missing 4 free throws down the stretch that could have iced the game for the Hatters. They would turn the ball over on their final possession allowing JU to run out the clock. Smith finished with 29 for the Dolphins. These two teams will turn around and play each other once again this Wednesday night.

hell of a comeback Coach. I don't know that I could've stayed patient enough to comeback from that far down.

How many games do you have left before the A-Sun tourney?
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(
