Rizzo Inks Two on First Day of Early Signing Period

When a coach comes in to a season with five scholarships available, their dream is to get an instant commit on the first day of the early signing period. In AJ Rizzo's case, this year he got two of them.

      After successfully signing
Tommy Haywood last season, Rizzo and the assistant coaches focused on adding more size to the roster as PF Jerrod Finley and C Chris Matagrano will be graduating at seasons end. It looks as if UNH has found their replacements.

      The first to sign was
Dee Shakur. The 6'9" power forward from Trenton, NJ is ranked #355 overall in the class. He looks to bring a great tenacity of the defensive side of the floor and is athletically gifted for his size, making him a matchup nightmare for many defenders, especially in the AEC. With some work on his post moves, he could be a great player for this program.

      The other signee was
Channing Rollins. The 6'9" center from Norwalk, CT is almost a Shakur clone. He can D up with the best of them and has the quickness and vertical to elevate over his man. His offensive game is behind Shakur's but he usually gets his offense off of offensive rebounds.

These two big men, along with Haywood, should be the backbone of the Wildcats' defense for the next few years. If Coach Rizzo can put a couple scorers around his stable of bigs, UNH will be a perennial powerhouse in the AEC.

Although the Wildcats gave up 42 points to just three Princeton players, the rest of the team struggled from the field and helped them grab the win on the road. Chandler Rhoads led the way with 13 points with Ferg Myrick chipping in 12 and Tommy Haywood tossing in 11 with his seven boards.

        New Hampshire (10-1)302555

Wildcats rout the Knights of FDU as they allow them to shoot just 25% from the field and turn them over 14 points. UNH had a balanced scoring attack, with six players scoring six or more points, four of which scored nine each. Tommy Haywood finished with a career-high six blocks, upping his average to 1.4 per game.

        TEAM1ST2NDSCORE
        New Hampshire (10-2)241943
        Providence (7-3)433073

UNH gets dominated by Providence and brought back down to earth after starting the season 10-1. Shooting just 40%, including 1-12 from three, and turning it over 13 times is recipe for disaster. Add in that Providence dominated the glass and shot 10-19 from deep and you have the makings for a blowout. Only thing to do is learn and move on from this one.

In what was a game for UNH to make a few bucks by coming on the road to take a beating, the Wildcats ended out coming out with a win. Wait, what!??! The UNH Wildcats upset the #1 North Carolina Tar Heels?!?!?! What world are we in? Key stat was FG%: UNH 57%, UNC 26%.

Question. Before the season starts, do you adjust your players shooting tendencies? or do you just adjust your teams with your slider set?

                        Conference Woes for Wildcats

                        January 18, 2013

Hartford, CT - The UNH Wildcats stormed through their non-conference schedule, finishing an astonishing 13-2, including a 22-point beat down of the #1 ranked North Carolina Tar Heels. They did play some cupcake teams, which may have given them some false confidence.

Five games into the AEC schedule, they stand at a very disappointing 0-5. Injuries have derailed this team as
Chris Matagrano missed the first three of those games with a separated shoulder. Add in a bum ankle for Chandler Rhoads, pulled quad for Tommy Haywood and a sprained wrist for Ferg Myrick, it's easy to see that this team has been banged up for the past two weeks.

And it's not like these losses have been close. The Wildcats are averaging 41.4 points in their five conference losses while giving up 55.2 points. The injuries have severely hindered the shooting for the Wildcats and they can't afford to fall any further down the conference standings if they want to compete for the regular season title.

                        Coach Rizzo brought Chandler Rhoads,
DeAndray Buckley and Chris Matagrano into his office to talk them up. He needs these guys to step their game up and carry this team to a couple wins. If they can get off the snide, it could snowball into a nice winning streak, but they need to focus on the little things.

Wildcats Get on a Roll, Win Three of Four

                          January 30, 2013

Durham, NH - After starting the AEC schedule 0-5, the Wildcats finally got healthy and have put together a good two week stretch, winning three of four games in dominant fashion. Here's a quick look at each game.

The first win came at home against lowly Binghamton, exactly what the doctor ordered. Not only was just about everyone healthy, but it was a team that the Wildcats should beat nine out of ten times. Although UNH was down four at halftime, they roared back to outscore the Bearcats 33-15 in the 2nd half, with
Chris Matagrano leading the way with 19 points. Ferg Myrick's move to the bench has seemed to pay off as he has been the bench scorer the team has sorely lacked. He scored nine points on 4-7 shooting.

Three days later, they headed to Stony Brook and dismantled them 77-35. The big senior, Matagrano, scored a career-high 27 points on 9-12 shooting including 2-2 from three and 7-8 from the line. Myrick scored 11 off the bench.
Chandler Rhoads had eight points, four boards and seven assists while Tommy Haywood filled up the stat sheet with two points, five boards, one assist, four steals and three blocks.

Vermont visited Durham and got a 12-point win, 63-51. The Wildcats shot 21-51 (4-17 from three) while the Catamounts went 22-42 from the field and 15-22 from the line. Three Vermont players scored 51 points, the same amount of points as the entire UNH team, making it impossible to win.

After the loss, Coach Rizzo and Co. jumped a flight to Baltimore to take on UMBC and were they in for a rude awakening. Seemingly upset about the Vermont loss, the Wildcats throttled them to the tune of 73-47. Matagrano scored 23,
DeAndray Buckley scored 10, Rhoads went for nine points and 11 assists and Myrick scored his usual nine off the bench. A great all-around team effort to get the team back on track.

Cats Finish Middle of the Pack in AEC

                                March 1, 2013

Durham, NH - In what looked to be a promising start to the season, the New Hampshire Wildcats finished the regular season 20-11 after going just 7-9 in conference play. After starting 0-5 in conference, they won seven of their last 11 games and finished tied for 5th in the conference. Junior shooting guard, Scott Morris, has been out for two weeks with a broken ankle and will be on the shelf for another two weeks. They could use him in the lineup, but will there be games to play by that point?

In the first round of the AEC tournament, the New Hampshire Wildcats square off with the Vermont Catamounts. Coach Rizzo has already suffered two losses to UVM this season and a third loss would be a bitter end to what was once thought to be a special season. If they manage to win their first round game, they will most likely play against the AEC regular season champs in Hartford. Just like against Vermont, New Hampshire is 0-2 against Hartford this season.

It looks to be an uphill battle for an NCAA or NIT berth for the UNH Wildcats, but nobody expected them to make the tournament last season, either. They'll just have to take it one game at a time and pull together as a team to make another improbable run to the dance.
