Re: The Journey of Shea Mengel (CH2k8)

Scott Van Pelt: Welcome back. Now we are going to head to a place where most people have probably never seen or heard of. Easton, PA. Located 60 miles from Philedelphia and 70 miles from New York City. Home of the annual Garlic Festival and also the home of the Lafayette Leopards. We are welcoming in first year head coach Shea Mengel.

Shea Mengel: Thanks for having me Scott.

Scott Van Pelt: Don't mention it. We like to give the little guy a little bit of pub every now and then. During the football season we have the Wyoming coaches on and a few other schools and this is your opportunity to talk a little bit about your program. Tell us about how your season is going.

Shea Mengel: Well we are about three quarters of the way through the schedule and we are at 9-13. It has definitely been an up and down season as far as the wins and losses goes. We just won a buzzer-beater against American where our 2-guard Wheeler hit a 23 footer with 1.3 left to win it for us. I think that we are improving, but we still have a long way to go.

Scott Van Pelt: Being part of the Patriot League, what is that like?

Shea Mengel: It's fun. There are a lot of great teams, with good tradition in the Patriot League. You have Holy Cross, which has dominated the Patriot League for a few years. Gotten to the NCAA Tournament a number of times. Then you have Bucknell, who has been to the NCAA Tournament in recent years and even won a game. American has been to the tournament. There are also the service academies Army and Navy in our league which provides great competition and those games are always tough, hard fought games. Then you have up and coming programs like Colgate and Lehigh.

Scott Van Pelt: Sounds like a solid mid-major league. Lafayette is in the middle of the pack right now in the standings, what do you have to do to get it rolling and make a run to the NCAA Tournament?

Shea Mengel: We just have to stay focused at the task at hand. Scott, the biggest thing is mental toughness and not getting too high or too low. The guys are starting to get that concept and it is showing in their play. If you ride the emotional wave of a game or a season you are going to have an up and down season and hopefully we are going to turn the corner in that category. Otherwise we just have to be more consistent in finishing games. We have had leads in multiple games that we just haven't been able to hold and that has led to a few of our losses.

Scott Van Pelt: What was it like leaving your job as a pharmacist to come coach a the D-1 level? Tough decision?

Shea Mengel: Obviously that is a tough decision. I think in both professions you are helping people. Here you are helping build young men to be great on and off the court, where as a pharmacist you are helping people through therapy and consultation. Moving from the Midwest (Indiana/Wisconsin) was a little bit of a transition. This is a fast paced area of the country, being by New York City and Philadelphia, but I am adjusting and we are making the transition well.

Scott Van Pelt Where do you go from here? Next Season?

Shea Mengel: Well we are working on the recruiting class. Need to bring in about 5 guys this year and we are working diligently at that. Have offered a few guys and I think we are doing fairly well. Can't really go into details as you know, but once signing day rolls around I can talk about the recruits we have signed. Should be interesting moving from year 1 to year 2 and getting a few more of your recruits into the system that you are developing.

Scott Van Pelt: The coach of the Lafayette Leopards, Shea Mengel. Thanks for joining us and good luck the rest of the year.

Shea Mengel: Thanks for having me.

Enjoying the story so far, and I have fond memories in the Patriot League with Fairleigh Dickenson way back in the day. Feel free to beat up on the though! Keep it up!

Thanks for following. Mower is really coming on for me at the end of the season. He will be my only shooter back next year from this team so I will need him to be the star.

For everyone else...I am currently sick and recovering, but I have finished editing all the videos for the final games of the regular season. I will post updates tonight and tomorrow morning. Should get into the Patriot League Tournament then.

Poor First Half Leads to Blow-out Loss for Leopards

                Coach's Corner

"First off I want to say that I didn't think we played terribly. I thought our offense was flowing well and we were getting the ball to the guys that we needed to get the ball to. Wheeler was on fire from 3-point range. What did he shoot? He shot 6-of-9 from 3-point range and really took some good shots.
Benbow was another star for us tonight. He was really aggressive getting to the rim and really had success at either scoring or getting fouled. He was 5-of-6 or so from the free-throw line and that shows his aggressiveness.
What really hurt us tonight was that we didn't rebound well and we didn't defense. We couldn't stop anyone in the first half. You could have put my grandmother out there and she would have scored on us.
We need to make sure we know what our defensive assignments are and where we need to be to recover on the fast break. They also really tore us up on the backboards. I think they out rebounded us by nearly 10 and they were also sharing it really well.
Didn't think we would have this kind of performance coming off our great win against American at the buzzer, but what can you say. Back to the drawing boards again."

Sluggish 2nd Half for Lafayette Leads to Another Loss

                  Coach's Corner

"Another game that we didn't defend very well and today our shots were not falling either. I think both teams shot similarly, however, they really made some long distance shots. If you look at the difference in 3-pointers that is where they really have their lead from. They also had way to many second chances. They didn't give us very many second chances either.
Wheeler was way off today. Made just two 3-pointers and couldn't get shots to fall when it really mattered. We have to get Jim Mower more involved. It doesn't seem like he has his confidence during the games to take shots, so we really need to get that going.
Their point guard really lit us up. He was making shots from everywhere and even made half of his 3-pointers. 24 points and really dominated the game.
I think we may look at some other defenses and try to get things figured out. What we really need to do is get the rebounding problems figured out and stop some people. That could solve a lot of our problems."

Giese's Late Layup Give Lafayette Miraculous Win

                    Coach's Corner

"Not sure where we pulled that game out of, but it is nice to get a last minute win, instead of giving one away late.
I pulled the press out late, since we were down by 1 with just over 25 seconds left. We really caused some confusion and Navy coughed up the ball. Giese was there to grab it and lay it in. Then we played some defense late and got the win. Incredible feeling and I really feel good for the guys in the locker-room. They really have fought all year long and it is nice to get a win like this.
I like how we limited their scoring to just one player. Their center, Loupos went off for about 20 or so, but then we contained everyone else. Last game in Annapolis we really struggled to contain Newsom off the bench, this time he didn't get started from 3-point range and that was key.
We shot so poorly from the 3-point line that we are lucky that we pulled this one out. Some of our shots were not warranted and I think we need to clean up our shot selection. Like I said, I'm so proud of our guys for fighting till the end. Hopefully we can make this two in a row."

Benbow's 25 Leads Lafayette to 2nd Straight Win

                        Coach's Corner

"Another big win over a quality Patriot League team. Bucknell has been one of the most consistent recently and it is good to get a win on the road. Not a great shooting performance, but our defense again was very good. Really stopped them in the 2nd half. One of the keys was getting their SF, PF, and C all in foul trouble. Fitzpatrick is a key to their offense and getting him into foul trouble really crippled their offense. Benbow was undersized against him, but really caused problems by driving to the basket. Benbow was huge again for us.
After such a poor performance from the 3-point line last game we really stressed shot selection. I think we only took about 7 3-point attempts after we took like 26 last game. The only thing that I think could hurt us is if we are gun shy now. We still need to be able to take the shots when they are open and not always pass them up because they are afraid of what the coach will say.
Hopefully we can get this streak going heading into the conference tournament. We have some ground to make up to get a solid seed."

Solid wins against Navy and especially Bucknell. Benbow has just been playing out of his mind!!

"So close. We just couldn't close the door and get over the hump. Almost had that 3 game winning streak which could have really gotten us going momentum wise. We just blew another big lead and that is heart breaking for our guys.
I'm not sure what we can do in practice to get these guys ready to finish games. Maybe we need to scrimmage a little bit more and practice late game situations when one team has a lead. It is hard to stop a run when you the other team is on fire."

"They out hustled us on the glass and it showed everywhere else. I really can't say that I am happy with this performance. We are just inconsistent. I thought we handled the ball poorly and also played poor defense. We need to turn people over more if we are going to get dominated on the glass as bad as we did.
We had another lead and then our shooting failed us down the stretch. Struggled from 3-point range. Wheeler was really try to find his shot and jacked up 19 3-pointers. Really a bit too many, but he did keep us in the game. Benbow had an off game. Couldn't get anything to go and really struggled. This is why we need to get a consistent 3rd scorer out there. I think we need Jim Mower to step up. He has been a little gun-shy since early in the season, but I think it is time for him to step up and make some plays."

                                Coach's Corner

"Difficult way to end the regular season. I thought a few games ago that we really had something going. We had taken a step forward in our effort to be more consistent and to win games. Now we seem to have taken 2 steps back. We lost another tough game and really couldn't get going on offense again for the 2nd straight game.
Moldoveanu got going a little bit. Unlike last game where we were able to take it at him and get him in some trouble. We doubled him last game and our defensive scheme didn't work today. They were really hitting form the outside including Brewer who led them in scoring with 20.
We are going to make some adjustments heading into next weeks Patriot League Tournament. Have to get some other guys involved and hopefully we can do that. It is going to take a miracle to get into the tournament now. We will take it one game at a time."
