Cavs rebuilding, Gilbert hires new GM

    What does Cleveland do now?

ESPN analysts debate what direction the Cavaliers
should go with the rebuilding process.

CLEVELAND -- In what has already been a whirlwind off-season for the Cavaliers, team owner Dan Gilbert is hopeful that one more major change will help to purge the foul aftertaste of the LeBron era in Cleveland.

With the NBA season set to begin later this month, Gilbert made a surprising move in firing newly appointed general manager Chris Grant, who had taken over after the resignation of Danny Ferry this past June. Grant had been the assistant general manager for the last 5 years before filling the position over the summer.

"After much consideration, we decided it was best for the team to head in a new direction, particularly after the departure of James," said Gilbert. "This was not an easy decision to make but we feel the rebuilding process has to start from the top."

On Monday, Gilbert held a press conference with head coach Byron Scott to announce the hiring of new general manager Ron Arens. Arens does not have any general manager experience in the NBA but has spent parts of the last 6 years filling various roles in the front office with the Phoenix Suns, Orlando Magic, and Atlanta Hawks. "During the interview process, [Arens] outlined a plan for the restructuring of this franchise and I eagerly anticipate seeing it come to fruition," stated Gilbert.

With the new leadership, it will be interesting to see if seasoned veterans Mo Williams, Antawn Jamison, and Anthony Parker find themselves on their way out in favor of a youth movement.

      Week of 10/26-10/30

Boston's Paul Pierce scored 25 in Cleveland's home opener to carry the Celtics after Rajon Rondo went down with an injury.

The first week of the NBA season for the Cleveland Cavaliers showed some promise. Although they dropped 2 out of 3, one loss came at the hands of the Boston Celtics and the other by 1 point against the Sacramento Kings. Cleveland also saw strong performances from J.J. Hickson and free agent acquisition Ramon Sessions, along with veteran Antawn Jamison. The main culprit in their losses, especially in the close defeat against the Kings, was turnovers. Head coach Byron Scott is hopefully that the turnovers will decline as the team meshes and builds chemistry.

Sixth man Alonzo Gee rolled his ankle in the game against the Raptors but x-rays came back negative. He was able to play against Sacramento but only clocked 10 minutes. "He wasn't 100 percent out there and you could see that. This early in the season there's no use risking making an injury worse," said Scott. Gee is day-to-day but may be back in the lineup for their Tuesday matchup against the Atlanta Hawks.

With the emergence of Sessions and Hickson, one has to wonder if new general manager Ron Arens might send Mo Williams (who committed 10 turnovers in the loss to Sacramento) and Jamison out of town to fill other holes or acquire picks. I suppose it is too early in the season to seriously ponder trade scenarios but that's just something to keep in mind moving forward if they continue to play well.

        Weekly Wrap Up
        Week of 10/31-11/6

Rookie phenom John Wall teamed up with Rashard Lewis to hand Cleveland their 4th consecutive loss.

In a rough second week to the 2010-11 season, the Cavaliers were never able to get into a rhythm as they shot a paltry 37.8 percent from the field in the three game span.

Mo Williams had 30 points in the 105-88 loss to the 76ers
"It was a combination of taking poor shots and just not getting the open looks to fall," said head coach Byron Scott. "We've just got to keep working hard and eventually those buckets will drop and start stringing some wins together. Hard work pays off."

Amidst the negative aspects of this weeks games, there were some positive items worth noting. Antawn Jamison faced his former team, the Washington Wizards, for the first time since coming to Cleveland in a deadline deal last February. He had an impressive output scoring 32 points, collecting 8 rebounds and forcing 2 steals. Also worth noting is that third-year power forward J.J. Hickson scored at least 20 points in two of the games, marking the third time he's accomplished the feat in the six games thus far. Mo Williams also added a 30 point performance against Philadelphia.

Looking ahead at next week, the Cavaliers have two chances to end their 4-game losing streak against a weaker team as they are matched up against the New Jersey Nets for a back-to-back next Tuesday and Wednesday. After that, however, they face some stiff competition so it's important they begin shooting the ball better than they have been up to this point in the season. The team is likely still trying to find it's identity after the loss of it's "heart and soul" this past off-season, so don't be surprised if they start playing much better once they build chemistry.

Star power forward David Lee, in his first year with the Warriors since becoming a free agent this past summer, was surprised to hear his name involved in trade rumors over the last week. The particular rumors in circulation had Lee headed to the Pacers. "I'm just shocked to hear about this, I just want to know what's going on," said Lee.

Rumor has it that the Lakers are actively shopping young shooting guard Shannon Brown, who currently comes off the bench behind Kobe Bryant. It seems they're looking to boost depth in the post and feel they can get a good return for Brown. However, one rival GM noted that the Lakers "want too much."

Word from the motor city is that is that the Pistons are looking to swap PF Chris Wilcox in exchange for a young guard/small forward or a second round pick. Detroit is well stocked at in the middle with both youth (Monroe, Maxiell) and veterans (Wallace, Villanueva) and Wilcox is the odd man out. It was initially thought that Milwaukee was interested but it appears they've backed off.

The third year Raptors coach Jay Triano finds himself at the center of the latest rumors. Despite just barely missing the playoffs last season, Triano is already on the hot seat in just the second week of the season. Sources close to the situation cite a lack of player development as a key reason behind the rumors and feel if the Raptors encounter a losing streak, he could be sent on his way out.

After losing the face of the franchise during free agency this past summer, Toronto has struggle to find it's identity and direction. As such, they've been exploring a number of trade possibilities including a reported deal with the Dallas Mavericks that would send G Leandro Barbosa packing in exchange for C Tyson Chandler. We're now hearing that the Mavericks have backed out of negotiations but the damage has been done. Barbosa was visibly upset when asked about the rumors on Thursday. "I want to stay, I like it here. I understand it's a business but I hope I can continue my career in Toronto," said the Brazilian.

            Weekly Wrap Up
            Week of 11/7-11/13

Despite a strong week from Mo Williams, the Cavaliers lost 2 games in a row at home.

The third week of the 2010-11 NBA season got off to a promising start for the Caveliers. They opened the week with an 11-point victory on the road against New Jersey behind a solid performance from veteran point guard Mo Williams and seemed poised to repeat facing them again at home the following day.

Young PF J.J. Hickson has been productive off the bench and should earn a starting role soon
Unfortunately, the Cavaliers had a poor shooting day and lost the turnover battle 21 to 13. The Saturday bout against the Indiana Pacers yielded more of the same, as the Cavs shot a combined 39% in the 2 losses (in comparison, they shot 56% in the victory).

Cleveland does have some things to be happy about, J.J. Hickson averaged 17.3 points and 6.7 rebounds from the bench, and many around the organization and the league believe that he will quickly earn a starting job. This will likely push the veteran Antawn Jamison to small forward. The Cavaliers also got a surprise performance from SG Alonzo Gee, who nailed 5 3-pointers en route to 19 points in the victory over New Jersey. Whatever was working for him unfortunately wore off in the following game, as he shot a lowly 2-of-11 from the field.

Next week, Cleveland faces some challenges as they square off against three playoff contenders at home versus Philadelphia and on the road against New Orleans and San Antonio. "We're going to find out early on what we're made of. We are setting out to prove that although we lost the face of the franchise, we haven't lost our competitive spirit," said general manager Ron Arens. "Every game we're going to fight hard until the clock reads 0:00."

              Heat looking for offers

Early reports out of Miami are that the Heat are looking to trade veteran center Jamaal Magloire. Rumor has it the San Antonio Spurs have shown interest, but outside of that there hasn't been much activity. Reportedly, the Mavericks offered Brian Cardinal but a source close to the Heat insists that Miami has no interest in such a swap.

Although the 2010-11 season has just begun, there are already murmurs about the contract status of Caron Butler. Early reports indicate Butler intends to test free agency next summer. When healthy, Butler is one of the more productive small forwards in the league, but with his injury history one has to wonder if the Mavericks front office will even pursue an extension unless it comes at a discount.

              __________________________________________________

Pacers reserve point guard A.J. Price has hardly seen the court so far this season. Indiana has the good fortune of depth at the position, with Darren Collison and T.J. Ford in the rotation, so barring injury the team has little need for Price's services. According to a source, the Pacers are shopping him around to see what they can get. It is rumored that the Kings have offered Donte Greene although that information is yet to be confirmed. We will have more on the situation as it develops.

Although he's gotten off to an inconsistent start to the 2010-11 season, Gee has shown the potential to be a major contributor sometime down the road. With his athletic skill set and knack for finding a rhythm from beyond the arc, Gee could eventually develop into a 6th man of the year candidate or middle-of-the-pack starting shooting guard. The main thing his game lacks is consistency, but with his second 19 point performance of the season coming off the bench against the Nets on 11/9, Gee showed a glimmer of the promise this Cleveland organization hopes he will live up to.

                  Week of 11/14-11/20

Hickson has big week, Cavs win 2 of 3

J.J. Hickson is making a strong case for a starting spot, as he scored at least 23 in all 3 games this week

Maybe this Cleveland Cavaliers team isn't so dismal after all. In what was expected to be their toughest week yet, the team was able to come away with two decisive victories and one close loss as the players appeared to finally be gelling. The third week of November saw power forward J.J. Hickson average 24.3 points off the bench while Mo Williams and Anderson Varejao also had productive games. Although turnovers were still a bit of an issue like in preceding weeks, the Cavaliers were no longer plagued by shooting problems after shooting an impressive 61.8% against San Antonio.

"All we really needed was for our guys to get used to playing with each other and the new system. Any time you go from running your offense basically through entirely one guy to having to rely on everyone to contribute, there's going to be a transition period," explained Byron Scott.

Players expressed the same sentiments as their head coach; after the Spurs game Williams told reporters, "it looks like we've really turned a corner of late, I think we finally found our identity." The question remains, however, can they keep up this streak of good play? If the team goes on to struggle, will there be a fire sale? When will Hickson be given a chance to start? Perhaps some of these questions will be answered next week when the Cavaliers play four games.

Now that Yao Ming is back on the court in Houston, there are a number of teams inquiring about Miller, and we hear the Rockets' front office is listening. Rumors have connected Miller with deals involving the Jazz, Pacers, Grizzlies, and Hornets, although representatives for Utah and Indiana have come out and said that there are no truth to the rumors at this point. One trade scenario that keeps popping up is Miller to New Orleans for David Anderson, but it is believed that the Rockets are in no particular rush to unload Miller given Yao's health record, so they are content with listening to more offers.

Many believe Hill could be the future of the Spurs franchise once its aging leaders near retirement. However, early reports out of San Antonio indicate they are fielding offers for the young guard. Many teams on the verge of youth movements have been in touch with Spurs' GM RC Buford, including Minnesota, Detroit, and Oklahoma City. Unfortunately, according to Thunder GM Sam Presti their asking price is too steep. For the time being it appears Hill will stay put, but who knows what the future holds.

Initial reports on Gay's broken hand were that he would be out for the next 4-6 weeks. However, Memphis training personnel fears the worst. Trainer Drew Graham stated "any time you have a player like him with an injury to his dominant hand, you always worry about bringing him back too soon. We don't want to risk doing that and have [the hand] bothering him throughout the season. We'll see how the healing process goes." While Gay is sidelined, Sam Young, Tony Allen, and Xavier Henry will have ample opportunity to earn an expanded role on the team.

Thanks man, glad you like it. I'm going to start trying out some different things over the next few updates, so that's it's not just the same repetitive updates every time.
