Re: Cavalier Chronicle: Life After LeBron

The Cavaliers had another short week following the All Star weekend, during which they encountered a few familiar faces. The week began with Wednesday's home game against Antawn Jamison and the Houston Rockets.

The Cavaliers sent Moon and Korver to New York last week
Cleveland received productive performances from J.J. Hickson, Alonzo Gee, and newcomer Terrence Williams, but it would not be enough to keep up with the streaking Rockets. Center Yao Ming led the attack with his 22 point, 9 rebound performance, with help from Kevin Martin's 19 points and Jamison's 18.

"Even though I wasn't with Cleveland for a very long time in the grand scheme of things, it was still kind of weird to be on the other side of this arena," Jamison told reporters after the game. "The fans here are great, despite the team's struggles this year. I'm happy to be playing for Houston though, so it was a bittersweet return."

The sixth of Cleveland's eight game home-stand came against another recent trade partner; the New York Knicks.

Gibson will miss 1-2 weeks with a lower back strain
On February 15th, the Cavaliers sent Jamario Moon and Kyle Korver, whom they had acquired from the Bulls just prior, to the Knicks in exchange for the expiring contract of the inactive Eddy Curry. Neither played an integral role for New York in this game. For Cleveland, Williams got his first start of the season and made the most of his 24 minutes, scoring 26 points with 4 rebounds and 6 assists.

"I was just looking to make plays out there. I took advantage of their physicality in the paint and was able to draw a few fouls," said Williams. The performance is sure to keep the young guard/forward in the starting lineup for the struggling Cavaliers. Cleveland also got more solid production from Hickson, Gee, and Ramon Sessions.

Unfortunately, it wasn't all good news for the Cavs as backup point guard Daniel Gibson left the game in the second quarter with a back injury. The training staff diagnosed it as a lower back strain and preliminary reports have him slated to miss 1-2 weeks of action. Next week, the Cavaliers continue their home-stand against Philadelphia and San Antonio before traveling to New York to take on the Knicks yet again on Friday.

          Scouting Report
Might have the highest ceiling of any player in the draft class. Low post game is really coming into its own. Only been playing basketball since junior year of high school, so still learning finer aspects of the game. Not much of a shooter outside of the paint. Gives 100% every time on the court.

Impressive during March Madness as a freshman, some scouts feel Price will develop into a Kevin Garnett-like contributor, which is mighty high praise for a 20-year-old.

Although only 6'3, Sharp has a strong build and tremendous athletic ability. Should have no problem with NBA 3-pointers.

Talented young point guard, the only question is how will his game translate to the NBA. Could be the next Steve Nash or the next Sergio Rodriguez.

One of the best defensive big men in the class, stands to become the highest drafted player from Mexico in NBA history. (Previous, Eduardo Najera; 9th pick of 2nd round)

The hard-nosed power forward faces questions about being able to match up well against NBA bigs, but one thing is for certain; he'll never quit.

**Thought I should note, the class was auto-generated, I might have made some changes to take down overalls at the beginning of the franchise but I can't recall at the moment. I started this before I realized that real life draft classes were available, but I kind of like how this gives me an opportunity to create my own story lines for the draft/players.

Re: Cavalier Chronicle: Life After LeBron

After putting together some consistent play of late, the Cavaliers hit a bump in the road to start the month of March. Sunday afternoon saw them hand a close game to the Philadelphia 76ers as they surrendered a 10-point halftime lead to go on to lose by 6. Terrence Williams turned in another solid performance in his second start of the season and power forward J.J. Hickson, now the team's leading scorer, added 20 points and 9 rebounds in the loss. Andre Iguodala led the Sixers on a second-half spurt to overcome the deficit and take the lead in the fourth and ultimately win the game.

The tough home losses continued when San Antonio came to town on Wednesday. Dominant games from Tony Parker and Tim Duncan led to Cleveland's demise, despite a near triple-double from Williams.

Miller is reportedly unhappy with his role since joining the Cavaliers
Both teams were bit by the injury bug, as Joey Graham, Manu Ginobili, and George Hill all encountered injury. None of the injuries appear to be too serious but they all will likely miss some time in the coming weeks. Tony wasn't the only Parker to have a solid performance, as Anthony Parker posted 18 points of his own thanks to 4 three-pointers.

Then, the Knicks, whom Cleveland had defeated a weak prior, exacted their revenge in a 9-point victory on Friday night. Amare Stoudemire simply dominated on both ends of the floor with 37 points, 14 rebounds, and 6 blocked shots. Hickson tried to keep up, with 26 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 blocks of his own but the offensive attack of the Knicks won out in the end. New York took the lead for good in the third quarter when they hit 6 of their 9 three-pointers.

The Cavaliers hope to right the ship next week, with games against New Orleans, Golden State, and Milwaukee on tap. Rumor began circulating, however, that Brad Miller has become unhappy with his lack of playing time in Cleveland. It will be interesting to see if they might consider buying him out or trading him in the offseason. Miller does add a veteran presence and decent scoring ability in the middle, but is it worth keeping him around if he is disgruntled?

              Anthony on the fence

Carmelo was the subject of trade rumors during the first half of the season, but once Denver got on a hot streak and started climbing up the ranks in the Western Conference, the trade talk died down. At the time, it was believed that Anthony was leaning towards signing an extension, but Melo recently told reporters "I haven't made up my mind yet," leaving some in Denver worried. Experts close to the situation estimate the current chances are 60-40 that he will return.

              Miller unhappy in Cleveland

              __________________________________________________

It was bad enough that Miller had to go from a playoff contender in Houston to the bottom-feeding Cavaliers. Now, reports coming out of Cleveland indicate that he is upset about his lack of playing time in his short tenure with the team thus far. Ironically enough, Yao Ming just suffered a season-ending injury leaving the Rockets in a tight spot. The Cavaliers might consider trading the disgruntled veteran to a contender during the offseason.

              McGrady likely not returning

T-Mac has been very vocal of late about his displeasure with the Detroit organization. He took it a step further this past week declaring that he will not be returning next year. It is expected that he will seek out a contract for the league minimum to join a contender and making perhaps one last run at a championship. Rumor has it his top choices are, not surprisingly, Miami and Los Angeles.

                Scouting Report
Tremendous athleticism and offensive ability. A lock to score in the post, deadly from mid-range, and above average from the perimeter. Plays great man defense, but could stand to bulk up to contend with stronger forwards in the NBA. Room for improvement when it comes to grabbing rebounds. Could be a star if he develops his intangibles and basketball IQ.

                -
Impressive during March Madness as a freshman, some scouts feel Price will develop into a Kevin Garnett-like contributor, which is mighty high praise for a 20-year-old.

                -
Carroll is one of the best rebounders in the draft, but his lack of intangibles and basketball IQ could hurt him.

                -
The lesser of the two Keller big men in the draft, Louie sometimes struggles on the defensive end and currently projects to be a poor man's Carlos Boozer.

Stockton is a classic sleeper, with the size, demeanor, and ability to be a great NBA player. Performs well in the clutch but must be more consistent overall.

                -
Bell has great size for the power forward position. Needs to work on his post moves but is a brick wall in the defensive post.
                23Eric Keefe21C7-0260Boston CollegeMid-Late 1st
                -
The top pure center in this draft class, some scouts liken his skill set to Roy Hibbert. Some scouts question his ability for improvement.
                24Bryan Cohen23SG6-3210IPFWLate 1st
                -
One of the older players in the draft, the senior out of IPFW is a real leader on the court. Playing at a small school hurts his draft stock, though.
                25Stan Jackson20SG6-7228ColoradoLate 1st
                -
Jackson is one of the most physically gifted athletes in the draft, but he'll have to prove he's got the intangibles to move up in this SG-heavy class.
                26Bryce Jones20PG6-3202Kansas StateLate 1st
                -
Many scouts feel this sophomore could be a hidden gem at the bottom of the first round, is lethal from deep.
                27Dillon Nichols20C6-10241MarquetteLate 1st
                -
The second best center in a weak class, Nichols shows good defensive poise but his post game needs refining.
                28Alfred Robinson21SG6-2175Indiana StateLate 1st
                -
Being undersized for a shooting guard and too poor of a passer to run point are two factors pushing this talented scorer to the bottom of the first.
                29Stan Moran21SG6-6199OregonLate 1st
                -
The junior has seen his value drop after an impressive sophomore campaign, but still looks to be a first rounder at this point.
                30Vince Horsley20PF6-9252MiamiLate 1st
                -
The hard-nosed power forward faces questions about being able to match up well against NBA bigs, but one thing is for certain; he'll never quit.

**Thought I should note, the class was auto-generated, I might have made some changes to take down overalls at the beginning of the franchise but I can't recall at the moment. I started this before I realized that real life draft classes were available, but I kind of like how this gives me an opportunity to create my own story lines for the draft/players.

                  Power Rankings
                  2010-11 Power Rankings: February
                  RK (LM)TEAMRECCOMMENT
MIA1 (1)Heat46-13The Heat became the first team to clinch a playoff spot, and with their 25-3 record in South Beach they will be tough to beat with home-court advantage in the playoffs.
SA2 (3)Spurs37-21The Spurs were cruising but they just lost Ginobili and Hill for at least two weeks. Hopefully Parker and Duncan can keep them atop the Western conference.
DEN3 (6)Nuggets37-23Undefeated in the last two weeks, the Nuggets hope the recent rumors that Carmelo may test free agency don't serve as a distraction for the team down the stretch.
UTA4 (2)Jazz40-20Nobody is surprised that the Jazz have a great team this season, but I don't think anybody expected them to be at #1 in the West this late in the season. Are they here to stay?
CHI5 (10)Bulls33-24Chicago has dealt with key injuries throughout the season but are making a strong push now that they're at full health and with Rose performing like an MVP candidate.
ORL6 (9)Magic35-25Despite Agent 0 playing like his old self and Superman dominating as usual, the Magic still seem to have a propensity for dropping games against weak opponents.
IND7 (13)Pacers34-23The Pacers have really hit their stride of late and managed to remain undefeated the past two weeks despite an injured Danny Granger.
LAL8 (7)Lakers36-24Injuries to Lamar Odom and Shannon Brown held the Lakers back a little this month, but with both returning to full health soon the Lakers appear poised to finish the season strong.
ATL9 (14)Hawks35-24Many expected Atlanta to make a trade for a veteran point guard before the February deadline but we're now entering March and Bibby is still the starter. It remains the only weak spot in their starting five.
PHO10 (4)Suns33-23Despite having the worst home record amongst Western Conference playoff contenders, the Suns are surprisingly still hanging with the Lakers for the Pacific division.
OKC11 (8)Thunder32-25Even though Durant is performing like an MVP, their lack of a post presence will likely spell their demise this April/May. Will they look to add one in the offseason?
BOS12 (5)Celtics34-23The Celtics beat my Miami on the 13th, but lost three straight last week, including against the struggling Warriors and Clippers.
HOU13 (12)Rockets32-28Adding the experience of Antawn Jamison looked like a good move, but now that Yao is gone for the season they're missing Brad Miller.
DAL14 (11)Mavericks30-28With a 53-point performance in Toronto, Dirk might be having his best season since his MVP year of 2006-07.
”GS"15 (17)Warriors28-29The Warriors are one of the most inconsistent teams in the league. Curry, Ellis, and Lee are all having great years but the team is just outside of a playoff spot. They'll need a strong finish to make the cut.
MIL16 (16)Bucks30-29Not only do the Bucks look poised to clinch a playoff spot this year, they are also still very much in the running for the Central division title as they're only 5.5 games behind Indiana.
MIN17 (19)Timberwolves27-32Despite having to endure perhaps more key injuries than any other team, the young Timberwolves have managed to show improvement lately, winning 8 of their 12 February games.
NO18 (21)Hornets27-33The Hornets look like they'll miss the playoffs in consecutive years for the first time since 2007. Expect them to try and make a big move this offseason to keep Chris Paul from leaving when his contract is up in the summer of 2012.
MEM19 (15)Grizzlies28-32Memphis has cooled off a bit after their scorching month of January and appear destined for a lottery pick for the 5th straight season.
POR20 (24)Trail Blazers26-32Even with a healthy Oden and Roy, the Blazers have struggled all season. Now that the young talented Wesley Matthews is out for the season, things aren't looking to get any better.
SAC21 (18)Kings26-31Evans is looking more like a shooting guard than a prototypical point guard. Perhaps the Kings will look to add a distributor to complement him this offseason.
CHA22 (20)Bobcats26-32After getting off to a hot start to the season, Charlotte has continued to drop off. Will Michael Jordan try to lure a big name player this offseason? Will he trade Gerald Wallace?
NY23 (22)Timberwolves23-34Adding Stoudemire has not had the effect Knicks fans had hoped for. They're still clinging to hope that Carmelo will leave Denver after the season and seek the spotlight of the Big Apple.
PHI24 (24-34)76ers23-37Philadelphia looks like a team going through an identity crisis. Expect them to shake things up this offseason as their current team makeup does not look like it's having the desired results.
LAC25 (23)Clippers23-37Clippers fans must be excited about the possibility of adding a player like Quinn Redd or Cesar Padillo in the upcoming draft to team up with Gordon, Griffin, and Jordan. Their future looks bright.
NJ26 (27)Nets25-34The Nets are a team in need of a star player, having depleted their roster in hopes of signing one of the big names last offseason. If Carmelo does test the market, the Nets still do have an outside chance.
WAS27 (25)Wizards25-33Washington would be a playoff contender in the East if they were able to win games on the road. Their home record is sixth best in the conference.
CLE28 (30)Cavaliers17-41Will the Cavaliers be able to land Quinn Redd or Cesar Padillo as LeBron's predecessor? Perhaps Terrence Williams will fill that role, allowing Cleveland to look elsewhere in the draft. Oh the possibilities...
DET29 (28)Pistons14-47Ben Wallace is quietly looking rejuvenated in Detroit. Unfortunately, it's completely overshadowed by the team's awful play.
TOR30 (29)Raptors15-44The Raptors are a team in turmoil and their coaching situation is nothing short of a joke. They need to figure out who their coach is going to be if they want any chance at luring a worthwhile free agent.

                    Coaching chaos in Toronto

To say their first season since losing Chris Bosh has been disappointing would be quite an understatement, although this was expected. The Raptors fell from a 40-42 team, seemingly one piece away from becoming a potential playoff contender, to the 15-46 bottom-feeders they are today. To make matters worse, they could likely have a new head coach again before the season is over. Bear in mind, such a move would be the fourth of it's kind for them this season.

                    Raptors head coach Courtney Wells

Despite seemingly turning around the franchise since becoming the coach in 2008, Jay Triano was sent packing in early November. His replacement, Courtney Wells, who was hired on the 10th, only lasted two games before being canned on the 13th. After losses to Orlando and Miami, the Raptors organization inexplicably decided to instead go with Terry Jensen as their new head coach. Keep in mind, neither of the two have any NBA head coaching experience.

But wait, their coaching situation got a bit weirder last week, when Raptors brass decided Jensen was not the right fit for the organization. Firing an inexperienced coach after a talent-lacking team continued to lose is nothing new or surprising. However, replacing him with somebody who they had already hired and fired just three months prior is rather unorthodox. On February 22nd, Toronto general manager Bryan Colangelo announced that Wells had been hired at head coach, again.

"I'm just thankful for the opportunity to show what I can do with this team," Wells told the press. "I feel like my first chance was cut short abruptly but I am happy to have a second chance. Sure, it's a unique situation but I'm making the most of it. I hope to get this team headed in the right direction."

With Toronto's recent track record, I wouldn't be so sure that he will get the opportunity.

I've been following this since the beginning but I decided it was finally time to post... This is honestly one of the best basketball dynasties I've followed. I especially enjoy the draft previews. Good job man and keep the great work up!

The Cleveland Cavaliers organization and its fans received some sad news at the start of the week. Veteran guard Anthony Parker told reporters that he plans to retire after the conclusion of the season. "I've given this game a good portion of my life, and now it's time move on to the next chapter," he said.

The Cavalier front office was hoping for Parker to stick around next year and become a leader and mentor for the recent influx of youth in Cleveland. A deadly accurate jump-shooter and stand up guy, Parker will be missed.

Varejao leads the team in blocks.
The disappointment continued as the Cavs came up short in their first game of the week against the Hornets. Cleveland struggled to get into a groove on offense as Ramon Sessions was the only player to top 12 points with 26. New Orleans was dominant on the glass, with three players pulling down at least 10 rebounds.

Up next against Golden State on Tuesday, the Cavaliers were able to rebound and hold off a late fourth quarter surge by the Warriors. Sessions scored at least 20 points for the second consecutive game and led the way with a solid all-around performance. Terrence Williams and J.J. Hickson put up good numbers as well, perhaps giving Cleveland fans a glimpse of what the near future holds as far as young talent is concerned. Williams has been particularly impressive since stepping into the starting lineup back on February 25th. Another positive note the Cavaliers can take away from this game is that they were able to hold David Lee to a mere 15 points; he had scored 36 against them back in January.

The team then traveled to Milwaukee, where the hungry Bucks were fighting to gain a better playoff spot and traction in the division. With a balanced scoring attack, the Bucks came out victorious against Cleveland for the third time this season. For Cleveland, Williams impressed again, leading all Cavaliers with 18 points. Hickson also added another double-double to his impressive season, scoring 15 points and pulling down 15 boards.

Finley already has two championship rings from his time with the San Antonio Spurs, but he hopes to grab one final ring in Boston before calling it quits. The 38-year-old veteran of 15 years divulged to the media that the 2010-11 season would be his last. Finley has not has much impact for the Celtics this season but has provided add depth in the absence of Ray Allen.

After being fired as head coach of the Toronto Raptors in November, Triano was hired by the Detroit Pistons to replace John Kuester back on December 24th. With all of the dysfunction centered around the Pistons at the moment, Triano's future with the team is unknown. The front office feels he hasn't been doing an effective job of keeping the players disciplined and they are questioning whether or not he is the right man for the job.

Bogans has been unhappy in Chicago all season, but he went public with it on Thursday. The 30-year-old guard and journeyman has asked to be traded elsewhere during the offseason. When Bogans joined the Bulls, he was under the impression he'd be competing with Ronnie Brewer for the starting shooting guard position but feels like his role on the team is not respective of his performance.

The Lakers had been without their versatile forward for most of the past month thanks to a broken toe but he has been cleared to play against Dallas. Their were some who questioned whether bringing him back right now was the right decision, claiming the Lakers should rest him until the playoffs. Ultimately Los Angeles has opted to put him back into the rotation with hopes of distancing themselves from the Suns in the Pacific division.

Best rebounder, especially considering his size. Already a great defender, has shown growth offensively in his senior year. Makes some bonehead plays with the basketball every so often, just needs to learn patience. His athleticism and basketball skills are NBA-level already. Will likely be the front-runner for Rookie of the Year.

This season has had its ups and downs for the Cavaliers, and this week was no different. The week started off at home against Oklahoma City before the start of a three-game west coast road trip. Surprisingly, Cleveland held their own against the Thunder but ultimately lost when James Harden 3-pointer at the buzzer secured the victory for OKC. Terrence Williams and J.J. Hickson continued their respective streaks of solid play but it wouldn't be enough. Point guard Ramon Sessions only saw 18 minutes of court time as he racked up 5 fouls early on.

Varejao, injured early in the 2nd half, sat out the rest of the game against the Clippers

In Sacramento, the Cavaliers looked to redeem themselves from the 1-point loss they suffered back on October 30th and they managed to do just that. Williams again impressed, nearly putting up a triple-double to compliment his 20 points. Meanwhile for the Kings, Tyreke Evans's 36 point performance would be in vain, as most of the rest of his supporting cast appeared to have an off day. Sessions had a very productive day and Hickson racked up his second consecutive 20 point game.

On Thursday in Portland, the Cavaliers managed to sneak out a narrow victory in the low-scoring affair against the Trail Blazers. Williams had been suspended for the game by the Cavaliers after an unexcused absence at the team's morning shoot-around, as well as being late to arrive for pre-game drills. It would be an ugly game, however, as both teams shot a combined 33.8%. Joey Graham had a particularly disappointed performance despite getting the start in place of Williams as he made only one of his ten shots.

With a two game winning streak going, the Cavaliers headed to Los Angeles to take on Eric Gordon and the Clippers. Gordon put up 39 points to lead the Clippers to an 8-point victory. Anthony Parker had his best game of the season, dropping 25 points including 5 shots from beyond the arc. Rookie Kenny Adams also had his best performance, nearly amassing a double-double in his 16 minutes on the floor. Unfortunately, not only did Cleveland lose the game, but Anderson Varejao and Daniel Gibson each suffered injuries. Luckily they don't appear to be too serious but Varejao will likely miss at least a week while Gibson is day-to-day.
