    2015 Tournament

    Semifinals
    #6 Towson 86 #10 William and Mary 74

After a season of struggling in the CAA, the Towson Tigers are exactly where they thought they should be at the start of the year: vying for the CAA Championship. Although it took a large second half run, the Tigers dispatched the Tribe thanks to a strong defensive push that saw William & Mary go scoreless for 5 minutes in the second half.

#1 Drexel vs #12 UNC Wilmington

Once upon a time, the Drexel Dragons were the underdog and were always hungry. It didn't matter the competition, they would always come out firing and always find a way to perform.

But the question for this year's squad has been how will the defending CAA and National Champions do as favorites. But during the hubub and debate, did everyone really forget about the Seahawks?

These boys can play. They went toe to toe with the Dragons. No matter how many times Drexel looked like they were about to break away with the game, the Seahawks would storm back. And then any time it looked like UNC Wilmington was going to take control, Drexel showed the resilience that has served them so well in the past.

In a game so close, small decisions can make a huge difference. Strangely and uncharacteristically, it was Coach West who wound up making some head scratchers. Dez Braxton entered the game with a sprained knee and was clearly affected by it throughout. It looked like he was a scratch early, but then Coach West brought Braxton back onto the floor multiple times, including key possessions in the final minutes. He could not get his legs into his shot and could not keep up on defense.

Guessing and managing injured players is one thing, but managing players with fouls is Coaching 101 -- the kind of criticism Coach West was thought to have shook years ago. But he put Femi Ramsey back onto the court with three fouls early in the second half, and then put him back on the court with four fouls with over 6 minutes left in the game. Both times, Ramsey picked up fouls within possessions of being on the court.

If anything, West's coaching decisions seemed entirely distracted throughout the game. The Dragons were once up by 8 in the second half, finally closing down the defense via a 3-2 zone. But then West switched defenses on four straight plays, and each play players were out of position and soon the Seahawks were tied back up. The defensive switcheroo may have just been strategy, but bungling Ramsey's foul situation proved far more costly.

Instead of having their leader, their rock, on the floor for the closing minutes, Coach West squandered his star player. Tracy Cottrill and Duncan Sow did everything they could in the middle, but the best front court player on the floor was not even wearing white. UNCW's Urdoh Archibald was far and away the most imposing player on the floor.

Which led to the closing minutes of the game. Woody Morandais gave the Dragons a huge lift by hitting a three point shot with 12 seconds left on the clock to give the Dragons a one point lead. The Seahawks took their last time out with time enough to run just one more play. A two or three would win, even a foul and trip to the free throw line could allow for the unthinkable.

Could the fledgling UNC Wilmington Seahawks slay Goliath?

UNC Wilmington's final possession of the game.

Ernie Mills brought the ball up the floor with time ticking quickly. There was little time for movement, the ball had to go to the right player for the shot. Mills passed along the left baseline to Vin Casey, who was immediately swarmed in the corner by Woody Morandais and the Drexel defense. Perfect position. A perfect trap on the corner of the baseline. Textbook defense.

Except for Kentrell Dean, the defensive black hole of an otherwise perfect play. Dean inexplicably drifted off of his man into the paint while Casey was trapped. In desperation, Casey threw a perfect pass across the court to a now unguarded Reggie Bradley. With no time to think, only shoot, Bradley launched the ball as time expired.

His third three pointer of the game sealed quite possibly the biggest upset in CAA History.

Coach's Take: What can you do. We had them in the position we wanted to have them. Our defense collapsed. The trap was set. But a perfect pass, one defender out of position, and a perfect shot. This is what I was telling our young guys about. We can't have lapses like this. It doesn't just costs you a W, it costs you a chance to keep playing.

Ed Note: The CPU did me in this game. For some reason, when I started the game my playbook was reset and despite having the settings in the game menu set otherwise, play calling and substitutions were being called automatically by the CPU. That meant I had to recreate my playbook from scratch in game. That meant my team was not always in the defense I wanted it to be in, leading to easy Seahawk baskets. That meant a hurt/ineffective Dez Braxton kept getting subbed onto the floor. That meant Femi Ramsey got subbed on prematurely and picked up fouls 4 and 5 before I could sub him off (with 5 minutes let!). I can live with losing to a buzzer beater and I had other chances to win. I do not enjoy having the game screwing with me like this, although it has not happened before or since. I have no idea why this happened, but it very likely cost me the game.

    Finals
    #12 UNC Wilmington 78 #6 Towson 82

The Towson Tigers are finally going to the NCAA Tournament, but they needed to come back from a large second half deficit. UNC Wilmington did everything they could, but they will have to hold onto what was a dream tournament run instead of punching their ticket to a remarkable NCAA Tournament bid. That distinction belongs to Towson -- but expect the CAA to have two teams in the Tournament for a second year in a row.

Were the coaching settings on manual? The only thing I can think of is that all of them turned to auto somehow.

That's exactly what happened. My coach profile somehow got reset (as evidenced by my playbook being wiped) but only for the game. The first thing I did after it was over was check, and everything was still set to manual and my playbook was intact.

No idea why it happened. As I said, has not happened before or since.

I'll just add that I very easily could have lost to UNCW anyway. It was a good game regardless. I just don't like the level of impact some glitch or snafu had on the game itself. The result at least gets a * for that.

It sucks to hear the game is sabotaging you with the playbook and subs. Otherwise, the loss would have been more uproarious - but I guess the game will take a win however they can get it.

                  2016 #1 Seeds

If there is one thing we know from this season, it is that there is a big cluster of teams at the top. No one really gained separation, and as many as 10 teams could make a viable case for being a #1 seed in the tournament. But the selection committee has to pick four, and here they are.

Expect the Tournament as a whole to be very top heavy. On paper these four teams definitely deserve their place at the top of each regional, but teams like Connecticut, Marquette, and Washington State will look to take matters onto the court. Meanwhile, preseason favorite Louisville is noticibly absent, and Kansas will have to look at its early season scheduling. Their #1 ranking in both polls did not seem to make up for the Jayhawk's #9 RPI.

                  Tournament Bubble Watch

                  California 17-14 (RPI 29)
                  Maryland 20-11 (RPI 32)
                  Wisconsin 21-12 (RPI 33)
                  Florida State 20-11 (RPI 36)
                  Tulane 23-9 (RPI 37)
                  Stanford 20-12 (RPI 39)
                  Iowa 21-9 (RPI 43)
                  Dunquesne 22-10 (RPI 46)
                  Loyola Marymount 23-7 (RPI 48)
                  Florida International 24-6 (RPI 58)

As for the teams sweating it out, it comes down to teams either being trapped in weak conferences of losing key games at the wrong time. California had a brutal schedule, but the amount of losses could hurt them. Tulane and Dunquesne are both hurt from Conference USA and the Atlantic 10 having down years, while Florida International will have to hope its sheer amount of wins is enough to convince the committee to give it a place at the table.

But with a number of upsets in conference tournaments throughout the country, it looks like there are going to be a number of teams left hungry.

                    2016 Selection Sunday

With the #1 seeds containing a few surprises, there sure it to be intruige at the top of the bracket as well as seeing who made it into the field and who did not. Questions abound, from whether Kansas and Connecticut will slip down to a #3 seed despite being ranked #1 & #3 in the country respectively. Furthermore, fans will be interested to see where defending National Champion Drexel places, and if there are any other mid-majors poised to make a run in this year's tournament.

                    East Regional
#1 Missouri vs Play-In (Mississippi Valley State vs American University)
                    #8 Memphis vs. #9 UNLV
#5 Oklahoma State vs. #12 Utah
#4 West Virginia vs. #13 Georgetown
#6 Florida Atlantic vs. #11 Iowa
#3 LSU vs. #14 Norfolk State
#7 Ohio State vs. #10 California
#2 Marquette vs. #15 Southern Utah

This regional is indicative of this year's tournament field. It is very top heavy. If Missouri can keep the consistency they've finally found this year, they can make it all the way through unscathed. But Marquette and LSU both offer up significant challenges -- they're big teams. Something the Tigers struggled with this season in the Big 12. Iowa is already favored against Florida Atlantic, and Ohio State presents a number of match up problems for California. Still, expect one of the top three to escape the East.

                    West Regional
#1 NC State vs. #16 Winthrop
                    #8 Tennessee vs. #9 Temple
                    #5 Oklahoma vs. #12 Elon
#4 Ole Miss vs. #13 Montana
#6 North Carolina vs. #11 Arizona State
#3 Iona vs. #14 Missouri State
                    #7 Nebraska vs. #10 Saint Mary’s
                    #2 Connecticut vs. #15 Monmouth

The Wolfpack may be on top in the West, but Connecticut has to be the favorite here. NC State struggled in the ACC Tournament and got knocked out by Duke in the semi-finals. The Huskies survived the Big East gauntlet and is battle tested. It remains to be seen whether they can recover. Meanwhile, basketball fans would love to see an Iona-UNC match up in the second round -- both teams are fast and a lot of fun to watch. Also, look out for Montana. If they can stay hot on offense, they could knock out Ole Miss before the Rebels knew what hit them.

                    South Regional
                    1 UCLA vs. 16 Stetson
                    #8 DePaul vs. #9 Clemson
                    #5 Oregon vs. #12 Troy
                    #4 Vanderbilt vs. #13 Butler
#6 Cincinnati vs. #11 Loyola Marymount
#3 Washington State vs. #14 U. Maryland Baltimore College
                    #7 Gonzaga vs. #10 Stanford
                    #2 Louisville vs. #15 Princeton

This is another regional where the top seed might not be the strongest team. Louisville's snub for a top ranking may be the motivation the Cardinals need to make an extended run. Meanwhile, both Oregon and Cincinnati are vulnerable for upsets and drew two of the strongest mid-major teams from the selection field in Troy and Loyola Marymount. Then there is Vanderbilt, who has been on fire for the entire 2016 calendar year en route to running away with the SEC title. UCLA may make it out of this regional, but the smart money is on the field -- especially Louisville.

                    Midwest Regional
                    #1 Purdue vs. #16 Towson
#8 Duke vs. #9 UC Irvine
#5 Villanova vs. #12 Utah State
#4 Arizona vs. #13 Western Michigan
                    #6 Xavier vs. #11 Maryland
#3 Georgia Tech vs. #14 Tennessee Martin
#7 Drexel vs. #10 St. Bonaventure
                    #2 Kansas vs. #15 UT-Arlington

The Purdue Boilermakers have been off the radar the past few years but finally put everything together and had a season deserving of a number one seed. Too bad they were slapped into possibly the most brutal regional of all. The Kansas Jayhawks are stacked and are playing with a chip on their shoulder. Duke needed a big run through the ACC Tournament to solidify its position in the field, but they play far stronger than a #8 seed. Arizona and Georgia Tech can also match the Boilermakers shot for shot from beyond the arc. And don't count out the Drexel Dragons. The defending champs may have stumbled in the CAA, but the past few years they have shown they save their best basketball for March.

                    Conference Breakdown

                    Big East: 8
                    Pac 10: 7

                    California
                    Iowa
                    Maryland
                    Loyola Marymount

                    Teams Out:
                    Wisconsin
                    Florida State
                    Florida International University
                    Dunquesne
                    Tulane

There were no big surprises with the bubble teams this year, although there is some uproar about the Committee favoring the traditional power conferences -- some even having the audacity to claim "West-Coast Bias". The bubble breakdown cannot be too much of a surprise though. There were so many upset teams breaking into the field due to their conference tournament, it is inevitable that some teams would be left chasing the NIT.

                    Seeding Reaction

The Dragons did not take care of business in the CAA, and so it is not a huge surprise that they dropped down to a #7 seed. Even if the loss to UNC Wilmington was close, two losses to Old Dominion tarnishes the work the Dragons did early in the season. So they set themselves up for a tougher road to repeat. At least the #10 match up is a winnable game, because West's run through the tournament could end early against the stacked Kansas Jayhawks.

Just the same, the seeding reflects how the Dragons performed later in the season. They will need to get more disciplined on offense and defense, cut down on the turnovers, and contest more shots. A lot of that falls on West's young back court -- they are going to need to grow up in a hurry.

Do you think Drexel has what it takes to do it again? Who do you see winning it all?

I did a double take at that as well.

Turns out GT would not be in the Big Dance except that they won the Big East Tournament. So it goes I guess.

                          Should Philly Fear the Turtle?

Did Maryland Coach Gary Williams hand pick Guy West as his successor at College Park?

Every coach insists that speculation is never a distraction and that their focus is always on the game at hand.

Coaches, by their nature, are notorious liars.

Sure, there is a third consecutive NCAA Tournament to prepare for. This time a title defense. So what? As the coaching rumor mill begins to spin, no name is quicker to be added to the pot than Drexel's Guy West. The former adjunct college professor only needed six years of coaching experience to be the hottest name on the market. But in an era of Brad Stevenses and Shaka Smarts, big time programs are looking to hire young and hire success stories. Guy West has very few peers in terms of his early career success.

All reports and sources say West is happy to be coaching at Drexel and is thankful for the only school that gave him a chance after being shown the door at Norfolk State. But those same reports also suggest that there are a number of power programs lurking and looking to offer Coach West big money. How big? Large enough to where the Drexel Board of Chancellors would veto any contract in the same pay range despite the success and positive exposure West has brought to Drexel.

Where does that leave Guy West? Philadelphia fans would understand him moving to a power conference, but they probably would never forgive him either. The Drexel basketball program owes him a lot, especially as the Dragons are poised to move to The Armory in two seasons. But Coach West has already seen the other side of this coin. Early in his career he passed up opportunities at Houston and Nevada -- and surely he now appreciates how long it takes for such opportunities to arise again. If they ever do.

But it still has to be the right job at the right place at the right time.

Enter Gary Williams, the Head Coach of the Maryland Terrapins. For years he has played the retirement game, saying that he would be willing to step away when the time was right and when the future of his program could be assured. It has been a long run for Williams, who has been accused of clinging to his post as tightly as he clings to the past. But after years of searching, the stars may have finally aligned for him to step aside.

Coach Williams is reported to want a replacement that is committed to the program but also one that will bring immediate continued success. West is the kind of big name that would fit in nicely with the athletic boosters, and he has a pedigree of taking working parts at lesser programs and turning them into winners. With Maryland the parts would already be in place. West would just have the keys to the Kingdom and could skip the rebuilding phase entirely.

But this is not all Williams' talk either. Coach West is reported to appreciate programs with a strong academic record. That's a plus for Maryland. West also has a number of ties both to the ACC and to College Park itself. Born in Bethesda, MD, the Drexel Coach grew up in the heart of Terrapin territory. Another check for Maryland. Add in West's strong recruiting pull across the Eastern Seaboard and a willingness to take on a conference schedule as challenging as the ACC, and there is not much else to say. West would be an ideal replacement for Williams were he to step aside.

Of course, this is all speculation. In this age of 24/7 sports media and cyber snooping, no party would be stupid enough to contact the other while the season was in progress. Right?

That doesn't mean the thought isn't on West's mind. Look again at his coaching in the CAA Tournament against UNC Wilmington. There may be something to the speculation -- Coach West was distracted by something during the game. Was it a call? An opportunity? Would West lose focus when his team needed him the most?

"The only links between me and Maryland are that we are both in the NCAA Tournament and that we are both in the Midwest Regional." stated Coach West when pressed about links between him and a possible job at Maryland, "To address these questions any further would create an unnecessary distraction. We are focused on preparing to face St. Bonaventure. I am the Drexel coach. There's your story."

Coaches. Liars. It's all a murky mess riddled with conflicts of interest. The problem is picking which words are true, and which are honest.

                          West's Takes

Coach Guy West took some time out of his schedule to talk shop. Specifically, he wanted to give some brief glimpses at the teams in his pool as his team prepares to take on the loaded Midwestern regional.

Kansas: "There is a reason the Jayhawks are the number one team in the country. They have talent up and down their bench. Their starting five and a number of their reserves will be playing in the NBA soon. I will go ahead and say it, Kansas is likely the most formidable opponent a team could face in the Tournament. You cannot just game plan to stop their strength. The game of basketball is their strength."

UT-Arlington: "The Mavericks are scrappy. They like to run the ball much like we do, and they will play the passing lanes with reckless abandon. If they lose points on defensive breakdowns, they will make up for them by aggressively going after the ball. It is a boom-or-bust game plan that I can respect. When watching tape, I was impressed at how every member of the team was committed on defense. The entire team has bought in to the philosophy."

                          St. Bonaventure
: "I have read where some were surprised that the Bonnies received an at-large bid. That's probably because they don't make a lot of SportsCenter highlights with sexy plays and fast break ally-oops. St. Bonaventure is built to defend and built to grind out the game. We are going to have to stay disciplined when facing them. They love baiting players into making stupid plays and pouncing on the mistakes. If we lose the turnover battle, we will pay for it."

Even so, no two Big East teams should play one another in the first round, though this has been a common problem in all CH 2K games. Usually, they try to seed the teams so that no conference mates play each other until at least the Sweet Sixteen (though when the Big East got 11 teams in a few years ago, they had to break this unwritten rule, I believe).

Very interesting news regarding the fighting turtles. The ACC always seems to be the dominant conference in most legacies, it seems, my legacy included.

I remember the big ruckus being made when they got 11 teams. But that's a price worth paying.

As for the ACC, I would call them strong but hardly dominant in my Dynasty. NC State has been good for a long time. Other teams show up from time to time. But the conference has only gotten a few Final Four appearances and no National Championships over the previous 5 seasons (Ohio State, Kansas, Texas, Kentucky, and some other team).

I remember in one of them Temple and St. Joes were present in four straight finals, two separately and then back to back. Probably one of the most ridiculous thing I've seen.
                                That is amazing.

I have read a few people say that about the Atlantic 10. So far in this dynasty they have been solid and have had some good years sending teams to the Tournament. However, they usually get knocked out during the first week of games.
