Looking at records alone, 2-1 isn't bad. But when you see that the loss is to New Orleans, it stings bit. I would say it is a marathon and not a sprint, but with your job security so low and the AD's expectations so high I would be wrong. -

Re: The Accidental Career of Guy West (CH2k8)
The Wildcats might be in trouble.
Warning Signs
"This was the exact kind of team I warned my players about. The Dons are hungry. This is the kind of situation we used to feast on at Drexel and Norfolk State. But it looks like we have to go back to the drawing board."
The Wildcats surrender an ally-oop layup despite packing the paint with a 2-3 zone.
An 84-51 loss to San Francisco was not the kind of performance fans expected when the Wildcats brought on Guy West as head coach. He was considered a master motivator, a man who could get performances out of anyone off of his bench.
But it was clear from the outset that he Wildcats came out flat. As if they underestimated the Dons despite the Wildcats not having a winning season in four years. The Wildcats' faith in their own abilities could not have been more misplaced. San Fransisco came out attacking the paint early, getting Darwin Peterson and Roger Guzman into quick foul trouble. Meanwhile, the Dons packed the paint and dared West's team to shoot threes.
The Wildcats could not hit baskets, and the players hardly moved around to get open shots until Damon Guinn padded his stat sheet late in the second half.
"This starts with me," commented Coach West, "I need to find ways to get my players into the best position to succeed. Today they were not mentally prepared for this game despite me telling them not to look ahead to UCLA and not to underestimate mid-majors. There are the kind of losses we will need to build off of in order to create success."
That building could take quite some time. The Wildcats were ineffective on offense and were shoved around the whole game on defense. Peterson and L.F. Reaser, easily Kansas State's two best players, were beyond ineffective on the floor. When Peterson was not busy fouling, he was letting shooters drive to the lane while passing up shooting opportunities himself. Meanwhile, Reaser made poor passes that were either went through the fingertips of team mates or went straight to the opposition.
It is still early in the season, but any hopes of an instant turnaround for the Wildcats may need to be set aside. Coach West has a lot of work to do.

As for recruiting, I'll have an update related to that when the time comes. For now, let's just call it a game of "leapfrog." You know what I mean?Last edited by waytofailself; 06-26-2012, 03:37 PM.Comment

Re: The Accidental Career of Guy West (CH2k8)
Before the game Coach West put a copy of UCLA's schedule in each player's locker. Yes, their perfect 6-0 record is intimidating on its face, but the message West was trying to send his team was clear: the Bruins haven't beaten anybody yet.#4
Signs of Life
After tonight's game, they still haven't.
Despite the 66-58 loss, at least the Wildcats can say they put up a fight on the road. In fact, Kansas State played the role of spoiler by surprising UCLA early. The Wildcats led by as much as 9 points in the first half, but a number of factors contributed to their lead crumbling by halftime.
First, Darwin Peterson's recommitment to defense meant he was disrupting shots in the paint, but it also meant early foul trouble for the second game in a row. Despite Peterson being the Wildcat's best player, his lack of defensive development over his four years with the program has to be disappointing.
Second, West's decision to cut four players from the squad once again burned the Wildcats. Where West's offense relies on a lot of movement, fast breaks, and hustle, his new squad is just not built for this level of athleticism or physical exertion. The major drop off from the starters to the bench did not help either. The Wildcats gave their best punch early, but could not follow it up with anything resembling jabs.
Third, and most importantly, the Bruins started hitting shots. UCLA started 0-4 from beyond the arc, then decided to change their game plan and work the midrange game. The Wildcats got cold, and UCLA was able to spring and take advantage.
In the end, the Bruins were just too good. They led by as much as 17 in the second half, and Kansas State never made a serious run for the lead. If there is such a thing as a "good loss," this could be it. Hopefully the Wildcats can build off of this loss for their home date versus Nevada next week.

Coach's Take: Honestly, this effort against most teams in the country would have resulted in a W. Hopefully our team can keep our heads up high. The defensive effort that has been missing this season was in full force tonight. UCLA is potent and we held them to the 60s. We just have work to do on offense. If we can do more than force the ball inside, if we can stretch the defense, then we'll be in business.Last edited by waytofailself; 06-26-2012, 06:39 PM.Comment

Man, to think two seasons ago you were at the start of an undefeated season that culminated in a national championship. Lol. It makes a world of difference when you inherit a player like Femi Ramsey compared to the players you have now.
Keep working hard, the victories will come.Bengals

With K-State so far, it just feels like there's Reaser who can do some things, and Peterson should be able to do some things. Guinn has been a very pleasant surprise. I don't know why I have been able to shoot with him so well, because his ratings are mediocre at best. Mathis has been a pleasant surprise off the bench, but Ronald Guzman has been maddening. He just CANNOT finish and CANNOT play defense.
The team feels like a bunch of parts slapped together than do not play well to each others' strengths.
Or I just haven't figured them out yet.Last edited by waytofailself; 06-26-2012, 09:02 PM.Comment

Congrats on taking the K State job!! Even though you lost to UCLA, it was a really strong effort especially defensively which is really nice to see early in the season.“If you’re true to yourself, you’re going to be true to everyone else.”Comment

Re: The Accidental Career of Guy West (CH2k8)
Just Throw It Down!
It was a night to forget at Bramlage Coliseum. The stands were half empty, and fans had to leave disappointed not only because Kansas State lost to Nevada, another non-power conference foe, but also because of the way they lost. A blowout against San Francisco could be chalked up to a bad night. Losing 70-71 at home stings a lot worse.
"I would expect this if we had just brought in a bunch of recruits. But starting 4 Seniors?" commented a clearly frustrated Coach West after the game, "You just don't blow a 10 point lead in the final 5 minutes with that lineup. We've got to change the culture around here."
For awhile it looked like Kansas State had this one in the bag. The Wildcats controlled the first half and were up by as much as 10 in the second with the Wolf Pack conceding the lane and not showing a pulse. Then T.J. Wise and Mallard Cross caught fire from beyond the arc. West's perimeter defenders could not keep up with the guards, and as a result Nevada shot their way back into the game.
All game long, the Wildcats had fed a steady stream of Peterson, Guzman, and Mathis to build their lead. But suddenly their twos could not match the barrage of threes. The momentum shifted and soon it was the Wildcats who needed to make a comeback. Damon Guinn lost his shooting touch at the wrong time, instead deferring and passing the ball.
But even then, it was in Coach West's hands to win the game. And his players could not pull through.
The Wildcats came down the court three different possessions down only one point. They were finally getting stops on defense, but could not punch a ticket for the lead. Roger Guzman missed three layups with no one around him in the final two minutes. Darwin Peterson could not get the ball in the hole either.
At no point was it worse than in the closing seconds of the game. Nevada thought it had scored the win when Cross made a layup and then made two penalty free throws to give the Wolf Pack a four point lead. But L.F. Reaser brought the home crowd to their feet with his second three of the night.
Out of time outs, Kansas State got a huge break when Stacey Haney chose the closing seconds to hoist Nevada's only brick from the free throw line of the night. The Wildcats had to work the ball down the court fast, and Guinn charged as fast as he could. By the time he made it to the three point line, Nevada's defense was in place.
With seconds remaining, Guinn saw Peterson streaking down the lane unchecked. The pass went straight to the power forward in stride, and with no one between him and the basket, the 6'10" Peterson rose up --
And attempted to lay the ball up off the back of the glass.
Not a dunk. Not an emphatic finish to preserve a hard fought win. Instead, a pathetically poor attempt at a layup that clanged off the rim as time expired.
"With the game on the line, you can't put up something weak and hope for the best. That's not playing to win." Coach West's comment regarding the closing minutes and performance by his big men came hot off the heels of a heated exchange between West and Peterson after the game. The Senior Captain tried to walk off and West had to pull him aside to finish what he had to say.
Coach West refused to comment about the exchange after the game, "That's for the locker room. That's for practice. That's not what the media is for."

To be honest, this team's defense is terrible. Currently we have an "F" and are rated #322 in defensive efficiency in the whole NCAA. Do you know where that puts the Wildcats?Comment
