Bleeding Kansas

There are grudge matches and rivalries in sports, but many of them do not measure up to the feud between the Kansas Jayhawks and the Kansas State Wildcats. These traditional rivals may have programs that have been heading in different directions for most of the past two decades, but that didn't stop the crowd from filling up Bramlage Coliseum tonight.

Of course, this is a year of transition for both teams as well, and it was apparently early on the floor. Half of the Jayhawk's key nucleus has departed, and Kansas has struggled to recover. Meanwhile, Guy West's Wildcats have roster turnover of their own and they have thrived by playing the young guys. As for Kansas? Their six new recruits (one 4 star, four 3 star) have a ways to go before working into the rotation. So it was a battle of home court energy versus an experienced team hungry to open conference play with a victory.

To start with, the Wildcats were just hungry for a basket. Despite open looks aplenty for Justin Guzman and Esteban Kummer, nothing they threw up would go into the basket. Fortunately for West's squad, their defense held just enough for their not so secret weapon to take charge.

Walls shows everyone why he has been a key to KSU's success

Dannorriss Walls had to have been at the top of Kansas' scouting report, but it didn't matter. He was all over the floor in the first half both on offense and defense. He fought for rebounds when other players would stand around. He moved on defense to protected the weak side and the lane. It's almost time to stop dropping our jaw at the recent hockey convert -- he is just that good and intelligent to pick up his game so quickly.

Walls beats out three Jayhawks for the ball

The early energy would be needed by the Wildcats though. Because although they were able to control the paint and enter the half with a 7 point lead, it would take a team effort to control Kansas' push-back.

Bucky Waller ignores the hand in his face to boost Kansas' lead

For most of the first half, Kansas' offense looked comatose or at least ready to fold. It showed in both slow passes and shooting 0-6 from beyond the arc. But the second half was a different story. The Jayhawk guards took advantage of Guzman's height and Kummer's lack of lateral quickness to find their own shots. The threes started early and came often and the Jayhawks would shoot 70% in the second half.

Suddenly there was a fire in the Lawrence contingent in Bramlage Coliseum. Although the game remained tight, Kansas was better able to exploit mismatches and make up for Kansas State's gargantuan advantage on the offensive glass. But with four minutes left, Kansas hit back to back threes on consecutive possessions to take a 5 point lead -- their largest of the game.

West's time-out had an eerie air to it. The home crowd was out of the game -- almost taking a "here we go again" approach. Meanwhile, West worked methodically on the dry erase board, sticking with his starting line-up and imploring them to get back out there and beat the Jayhawks to the pass.

The Wildcats came out in a 3-2, something they had not run all game nor most of the season. Suddenly it was harder for the Jayhawks to run free on the perimeter, and none of their players could match up with Ross, Wall, or Worthington in the paint. But the Wildcats would also need to perform on offense to get back into it.

Walls takes matters into his own hands and draws the foul

With threes no longer falling for the Wildcats, it would be up to their big time performers -- and right on cue Dannorriss Walls and DeMarcus Ross delivered. Ross got behind Kansas' defense to dunk home a good pass by Guzman. On the next possession, Walls grabbed a long rebound and took it the length of the floor. Walls not only fought through the foul, but made a layup.

Unfortunately, the Wildcats were still down 1 after Walls the free throw. But their fortunes quickly turned when Banduinn Gatling finally found his stroke from beyond the arc and swished a three from the corner. Kansas State had a two point lead and seven unanswered. But undeterred, Kansas shot right back into the game, this time working the mid-range instead of attacking the three point line. The Wildcats could not adjust in time before Kansas had a four point lead again. Another basket by Ross brought the Wildcats within two with 15 seconds left.

Forced to foul, the Wildcats could only watch as Domenic Hayes went to the line. As for the home crowd? They did more than watch, but roared so loud that the 79% foul shooter missed the opening half of a one and one. Ross grabbed the rebound and quickly worked the ball down the court. Kummer sat waiting in the corner. He had missed all of his shots to this point in the game, but sat ready and open in the corner as Guzman drove the ball forward. Kansas wisely collapsed on the middle to prevent the two to tie, but left Kummer wide open in his favorite shot.

The crowd chanted three and held the note until the ball clanged horribly off the rim. But as he had for the whole game, Walls burst through the Jayhawk defense to grab his 6th offensive rebound of the game. None was more important than this one, where he put back the shot to tie the game with three seconds left.

As for Kummer? He redeemed himself by blocking Kansas' final shot attempt in regulation. Which meant one thing: overtime.

Both squads were already exhausted from playing their starters out for most of the second half. The half started with Ross' two being exchanged for Waller's three, but Kansas seemed to run out of gas after taking a 1 point overtime lead. After the Jayhawk's next miss, Guzman drove the ball up the court with Walls to his left -- and Walls once against took the pass in his big hands, drove into the lane, and drew a foul while making a shot. This time he hit the free throw to bring the Wildcats back out in front.

It didn't take long for Kansas State to create separation on their lead. Moving into their slower paced half court offense, the ball worked its way around to Gatling, who ran to his favorite spot on the corner, hoisted a three, and didn't look back as it went in.

Gatling's three puts the game out of reach

The crowd smelled blood, and eventually it was Kansas who was forced to foul to stay in the game.

Except Ross could not hit the front end of a one and one. And neither could Gatling. And neither could Walls. Worthington also did his part in missing at the free throw line. But eventually, by attrition, the Wildcats built their lead to eight and were able to run out the clock. Kansas State punched home a hard fought win 86-78 victory over their arch rival to open Big XII play.

Getting Schooled

This game was so lopsided from the opening tip that there is not too much to say. The performance on the court by both teams spoke for itself.

The Oklahoma Sooners came out on fire from beyond the arc and dominated the middle of the court. In other words, everything West's squad could do, Oklahoma could do better. It got ugly in a hurry, and the home crowd got into Kansas State's head very quickly. The Wildcats were so terrible in the first half that their only highlight was Dana Worthington's three at the halftime buzzer which brought Oklahoma's lead down into the 20s.

Otherwise, the Wildcats were ineffective not only at hitting shots, but even creating them. Turnovers plauged the young team, and oftentimes the Sooners were so fast switching in their man to man that Kansas State was never able to get separation for shots.

When asked about his team's performance after the game, West tried to remain constructive but looked clearly frustrated. "Look, this is the kind of game we have to learn from. We cannot just file this away and say 'Hey, it was a bad night.' There were too many breakdowns. We got too discouraged early instead of maintaining focus. This is the kind of environment our young guys will have to handle in the Big XII. There's no choice but to do better next time."

Huskers on Fire

Nebraska started the game with a stunning ally-oop lob from halfcourt on the opening tip. They never looked back, and by the time the final horn sounded Coach West's squad still looked like they didn't know what hit them.

The shots fell effortlessly from all around for the Cornhuskers

The Cornhuskers, entering the game on a 7 game Big 12 losing streak, were practically shooting into the ocean in Bramlage Coliseum. While threes were plentiful, the most shocking statistic of the night could be the team's 70% shooting percentage in the first half. West's young team was taken advantage of again and again and again, especially on defensive rotations.

Nebraska took advantage of KSU's tendency to over-help on defense all night

In truth, most of the game felt like a blow out. The only reason Kansas State had a respectable final score was because Esteban Kummer and Branduinn Gatling both got hot and attempted to shoot the Wildcats back into the game. Unfortunately for the home crowd, they could get no closer than 5 before the shots stopped falling. From there, it was the same old story of KSU's freshmen having an ineffective post presence and Nebraska not knowing how to miss the hoop.

If this is what the 2018 edition of the Wildcats look like against Nebraska, its painful to imagine what awaits in contests against #18 Colorado and #8 Texas in the coming weeks.

Kansas State's early Big XII optimism might be short lived. Beating arch rival Kansas at home in an off-year is one thing. But one step forward seems to have equaled three steps back for the Wildcats. They look lost.

The Wildcats struggled to control Colorado's transition game.

"This has to be one of the most frustrating losses I have had in a long time," commented an unusually reserved Coach West after the game.

And who could blame him? Players seemed to be in a funk after using turnstile defense against Nebraska and Oklahoma. Tonight they were always a step behind the Buffoloes, and no one was able to step up and lead the Wildcats back into the game. Although DeMarcus Ross and Dandorriss Walls managed to keep KSU within striking distance early, they did not have the support they needed from long range. As a result, Colorado scored the last 8 points in the half.

The home crowd smelled blood, and Simon Robins delivered in the second half with a lights out display of shooting from around the floor and driving to the hoop. Kansas State's young wing players could not keep up mentally of physically -- especially Braduinn Gatling, who had by far his worst game of the season. So although the Wildcats were able to bring the game to within 4 points, the outcome of the game still felt inevitable. A 15-0 run by Colorado slammed the door shut on any thoughts of a come back. The final margin of 69-62 doesn't represent just how far apart the teams were in the second half.

The Wildcats have a very winnable game coming up against Texas A&M. But Coach West needs to find some kind of spark in his roster, and fast. Kansas State is quickly sinking in the Big XII.

Somebody Saw This Coming

It is respectable to drop a road game to ranked Colorado. Dropping a "must win" home game against the lowly Texas A&M Aggies is another matter entirely.

"It's not so much that we lost," said Coach West after the game, "We're a young team and losses are going to happen. The problem? It's the way we lost."

The clouds are gathering around Manhattan, KS. And maybe the vultures will be soon to follow. After a blistering start to the season, one where Coach West finally looked like he had righted the ship and adjusted to being a power conference coach, the Wildcats have dropped four straight. And Coach West, who has never been short for explanations, had a theory about what happened tonight.

When asked to clarify his comment "the way we lost," West replied "You have to turn it up a notch for Big 12 play. You've got to have that sense of urgency. That pride. Tonight Texas A&M gave us their best shot and we fell to the mat and never got up. Unacceptable."

It sounds like the many questions that peppered West before conference play regarding his young team's ability to compete and stay afloat in the Big 12 were justified. Score one for the press.

As for the disaster in Manhattan? The game was close for awhile, with the Wildcats having to rely heavily on their perimeter game in the first half. Walls got in early foul trouble, but Worthington and Ross were able to pick up the slack. But after the half, the Aggies jumped out to a huge lead by matching their first half scoring output in the first 7 minutes. It was another case of West looking clearly out coached after halftime, or at least his players' inexperience shining through.

However, the Wildcats were able to claw from 14 down to just one point on the back of a 3-2 defensive set. Kansas State was getting eviscerated by Texas A&M's wing players, but sticking tight to them allowed the Wildcats to force misses and grab long rebounds. Eventually an Esteban Kummer three would bring the game back to the Wildcats.

Except the Aggies weren't done.

The Wildcat defense was no match for the Aggies in the second half

Turning up the tempo on their offense, Texas A&M worked the ball down the court quickly and scored a three to up their lead to four. After a rushed shot by Guzman, the Aggies brought up the ball with new-found confidence.

Two straight threes in the second half broke open the game for Texas A&M

Suddenly, the Wildcats were down 7 again.

The Bamlage Coliseum crowd was incensed, and they urged the home team to push back. But there was no rally to come. Although the clock showed there were over 5 minutes left in the game, the Wildcats had no push left in them. Kansas State did not hit a three for the rest of the game, and sloppy play in the post turned makeable baskets into costly turnovers.

Eventually there was little to do but foul, and the Aggies were just as on fire at the line as they were everywhere else on the court. The final score may look respectable with Texas A&M winning 90-80, but there's no question who was in control in the second half. Add in the alarming trend of West's Wildcats going soft on defense the past month, and Kansas State has a problem on its hands.

Is West too quick to blame his players? After a stinker like tonight, who knows. But eventually the blame has to rest on the coach. If West cannot turn things around, and soon, the axe is going to fall squarely on him.

Ouch. Conference play hasn't fared well so far it seems. Although, i wouldn't call Texas A&M a "lowly" team, they don't seem that terrible.

Only "lowly" in so far that they were projected to be near the bottom of the Big 12 standings. Looks like that warrants a reevaluation though. They were a tough match up for me for sure -- but then again so is everyone in the Big 12 compared to what I faced earlier in the season.

Longhorn Letdown

The Wildcats had a chance to silence the crowd early by getting to the line, but after starting the game with four consecutive free throws, cheers for the home team were mixed with jeers at Kansas State.

It was going to be a long night.

But it wound up being a far longer one for the Longhorns. Whatever Coach West did in practice after the Texas A&M game, it seemed to stick with his young squad. Although they stayed predominantly in a 2-3 set, the Wildcat perimeter defense was stifling -- so much so that they held the Longhorns to 0-11 shooting from beyond the arc in the first half. And with their most effective weapon neutralized, Texas was completely impotent on offense in the first half.

Although Kansas State was not having its best shooting night either, they were still able to jump to a 14 point lead at the break 33-19.

Of course, the Longhorns weren't going to go down that easy -- especially not on their home floor. Coach Barnes' squad came out focused in the second half and used their superior athleticism to jump passing lanes and force turnovers against the suddenly too-confident Wildcats. Four turnovers in the opening minutes of the second period allowed the Longhorns to get within four. And Kansas State, with its recent collapses in Big 12 play, looked to be letting another victory slip away.

Except one player stepped up when his team needed him the most.

All season West has been trying to find a consistent perimeter threat to help open up space for his big men. Esteban Kummer and Justin Guzman have the proper range, but they are both inconsistent to say the least -- not to mention both were having an off night in Austin. But if there is one player West seems to have pinpointed in practice as having the potential to carry the load, its Branduinn Gatling.

The biggest rub against Gatling so far this season is his unwillingness to take the "big shot," or his shrinking from pressure. But tonight Gatling showed what he is capable of and how he could help lead the Wildcats to big things.

With ball hawking Texas bearing down on Kansas State's lead, West shunned the transition game and moved to using half court sets. This allowed Gatling to find open space in the defense, and amazingly the Longhorns left him unguarded on a pick and roll between Justin Guzman and DeMarcus Ross. Gatling fired as soon as the ball hit his hands to push the lead back to 7.

This second three, off a busted play, put Kansas State back in control

Texas attempted to answer with a three of its own, but Emmet Clifton's three bounced wide off the rim. The Wildcats attempted to run another halfcourt multi-screen play, this time with Kummer being the one to get the ball. But as had already happened twice this half, Kummer was stripped almost as soon as he started to pivot.

Fortunately, Gatling was there to recover the loose ball in the corner. He then turned around and hoisted a shot before any other player could react. Although it looked like a desperation heave going up, the result was automatic. Soon after, the Wildcat's lead was in double digits, and the Longhorns never seriously threatened again.

The final score was an ugly 61-50, but the tape will show a fine effort by the Wildcats against one of the best teams in the country (ed note: Texas was rated 98 OVR this game). Although the Wildcats could not overpower their opponent with their big men, they did out-rebound the Longhorns by double digits. And what might be more impressive is the final margin of second chance points: 17-5 in favor of the Wildcats.

So what does this win mean for Coach West and the Wildcats? They are a young team who are going to be able to compete, but with youth comes inconsistency. Hopefully this is a sign of things to come for Kansas State, especially on the defensive end. After playing a few weeks of substandard basketball, West is starting to reap the rewards of sticking with his young line up.

And maybe, just maybe, he can ride the wave and get his 200th win at home against Baylor later this week.

The highest out of a game I've ever seen is 96. The highest in game I've seen is 98, but never 98s in OVR, OFF, and DEF. I thought it was worth taking a picture (although according to my notes having to sim the last minute of the game to the end somehow changed the total amount of offensive rebounds I had from 17 to 13. Hrm).
