The Sign Read "Prepare to Get Owned"
The crowd was ready for the surprising Wildcats. Rutgers is a tough enough place to play as is, but add in a national TV audience and an upstart Big 12 program coming to town, and the intensity of the crowd was electric.
But from the opening whistle, the Scarlet Knights found themselves behind. They packed the paint and dared Kansas State to beat them around the permiteter. This time, Branduinn Gatling was up to the challenge, draining shots and opening space for other players.
At first, the game looked like it was going to be dominated by the away team, but widespread foul trouble, coupled with Justin Guzman rolling his ankle, stopped the Wildcat momentum. Rutgers was able to come all the way back from a double digit first half deficit to tie the game, and the fans in the stands were smelling blood.
Coach West needed someone to step up, with all of the usual suspects injured, on the bench, or cold. Fortunately, a familiar face from last year, Moses Mathis, was up to the task. Mathis had been demoted to the bench, primarily subbing in at the 3 in a very reduced role. Today he looked a bit like his old self.

Mathis grabbed a rebound and with everyone looking to go into half court took matters into his own hands. He charged down the court scored a bucket that only broke the tie: it also led to a Wildcat 8-0 run to end the half. Although there was still a half to play, Rutgers never seemed to recover and Kansas State ran away with the game.
Overall, it was a total team effort for the Wildcats. They held the Scarlet Knights to one of their worst shooting nights of the season. It was a good bounce back for Kansas State, who had previously been ebarassed at home by Miami. After the game, Coach West commented, "This is the effort I expect our team to show every game -- it helps that our shots fell as much as they did. But if we don't make the effort, we don't put ourselves in position to take the game away."
The Wildcats got even better news after the game when they learned Justin Guzman's injury was not serious, and he should not miss next week's game against Michigan State.

Yes, beating an opponent with a good number of wins from a major conference seems to be a good change of pace from my previous games. And it's all about the resume this year.
I'll tell you that a lot of what happened in the first half worked with him on the floor, including getting quick shots off fast break, pick and roll, and finding three point shooters.
But my gut tells me there's a typo in there somewhere. I'll have to check. With the game was going though, he did have a great stretch on offense in the first half.Comment

Never Out of Reach
The two teams took very different roads to get here, but in the end this game had more intensity than even the Bramlage crowd expected. Michigan State had broken even on a murderer's row out of conference schedule, while Kansas State has managed to win against surprisingly soft competition.
No one would dare say anyone on the court was soft today.
Justin Guzman brought the defensive intensity early by stopping Leeroy Tucker's drive
Both teams came out swinging. Built from the inside out, both Michigan State and Kansas State looked to impose their will in the paint and let the rest of the game fall where it would. There was no love lost between either side, as the fouls came early and often. Kansas State had a size advantage on the wings, which they were able to use to build a small coushin in the first half. But the Spartans' experience and levelheadedness kept them competitive on the road -- to the tune of scoring the last 5 points of the half to take their first lead of the game, 35-34.
But the train did not stop there. Coach West could only watch as his team began to get beaten to spots and began to lose their shooting touch. After only a few minutes, Michigan State opened up an 8 point lead. The Wildcats were at a loss, and Branduinn Gatling and Esteban Kummer had combined for an abysmal 1 for 13 from the floor. West's bigs were losing traction as well, especially with DeMarcus Ross picking up a quick third foul to open the flood gates inside.
After a frustration foul by Gatling led to a furious West time out, the Wildcats were on the brink of losing control of the game. Without other options, West decided to unleash his bench and hope for the best. The line-up looked like the empty pantry left by last year's departures, except for Kummer who was contributing everywhere on the floor except the score board. But the likes of Roger Guzman and Moses Mathis answered the call by sticking to their man on defense and stopping the bleeding on defense.
Suddenly, the Spartans could not keep their torrid scoring going. The Wildcats clawed (*groan*) their way back into the game by playing smart on both sides of the court. The home crowd was into it when the Wildcats got to within 2, but that was all West's bench could muster.
Two scoreless minutes later for both teams, and on came the rest of the starters.
Michigan State had taken control of the game by controlling the paint and looking for good shots outside, but their shooting stroke had failed them. Kansas State wanted to take a similar strategy, but went for a running game to prevent getting sucked into an ineffective half-court offense. But with the proper adjustments, the Spartans just needed a few more stops to save themselves and preserve the win.
The Wildcats weren't incompetent on offense, but they could not get a shot to go through the rim.
Gatling missed his first 6 three point attempts, but got the ball in the closing minutes anyway.
But give a team enough chances and eventually someone will break through. Freshman Branduinn Gatling's only three pointer of the game looked so good the Bramlage crowd shouted three almost as soon as Gatling released the ball. And with the shot, the Wildcats took their first lead of the second half. On the next possessions, Ross and Walls controlled the offensive glass on timely put back shots. With little else to do to salvage the game, the Spartans were forced to foul.
But it was too late. The Wildcats would win at the line by a final score of 70-61.

Not Quite Goliath
The Tar Heels continued their disappointing season by rolling over in Manhattan,KS with undisciplined play and lack of effort on both sides of the floor.
That is not to say that Guy West's squad was not well prepared nor ready to feed off of the home crowd. The Wildcats' 19 point victory attests to their effort. But UNC's self destruction was in full force in the opening minutes of this contest, when both Duncan Sood and Kris Valdez opened the game by committing two quick fouls. With two of UNC's "big three" out of the game for most of the first half, there was not much of a game to be played.

The Wildcats were efficient on the floor, attacking the basket to keep the Tar Heel defense in a constant state of backpedaling. West had all of his tools available while Coach Roy Williams was trying to plug in players to match the Wildcats' size and speed. There was no answer for DeMarcus Ross, who was able to shoot over everyone else on the floor. And once Branduinn Gatling hit two consecutive threes after a UNC time out, the rout was on.
Len Bullicer embarrasses the Wildcat defense in the second half.
If this was supposed to be a test for the Wildcats, then consider the test passed. But for most of the game, especially the second half, it looked like a game of 5 on 1 between Kansas State and Chapel Hill's Hawley Len Bullicer, who made some spectacular individual plays on offense. Meanwhile, the rest of the boys in blue looked content to stand and watch him on offense, or stand and watch their man blow by them on defense.
As a result, the home crowd leave delighted with a convincing 76-57 victory over one of the preseason dark horses to make a national title run. But what happened in the gym was simply a tale of two teams going in two entirely different directions. Coach West has his young players giving maximum effort en route to a great out of conference record. Meanwhile, UNC has a lot of questions to answer as they enter conference play with a losing record.

2018 Preview
After a few off years, the Big XII looks to have been reloaded and poised for one of its stronger seasons ever. Amazingly enough, this is even with Kansas and Oklahoma State, two of the conferences' headliner schools the past few years, being on heavy rebuilding years. Even so, this is a year where everybody in the conference will be chasing one team: the Texas Longhorns. With superior talent, they are on the short list of teams who are serious contenders for the National Title in March. But the Longhorns will have very stiff competition in conference play.

So far with every team has shown their strength in out of conference play, although teams like Nebraska and Texas A&M have feasted on smaller conference opponents in the early months of the season. Meanwhile, Texas, Colorado, and Oklahoma have tested themselves earlier, although the Sooners and their young squad have only had limited success. Meanwhile, Iowa State and Kansas State have come out of nowhere to post the two best records in the Big XII. It remains to be seen whether they can keep it up in conference play. With as many as six or seven teams in contention for an NCAA bid, it's going to be a competitive season.

NC State's title defense continues with a blistering unbeaten record, and Texas takes a small slide after dropping a close game to Ohio State. Illinois, Utah State and Richmond manage to break into the rankings, but otherwise there was not too much movement with the start of conference play. Expect that to change in a hurry.

Guy West (Head Coach, KSU): Thank you all for being here today. I'm glad nobody brought their torches and pitchforks. I'll be honest up front, it feels good to be winning. We have a young team and they still have a lot to work on and improve upon, but they're hungry. It shows in the way they prepare for games and it shows in their effort on the court. I am proud of my team and how they have performed so far, and I look forward to seeing how we stack up against the rest of the Big XII. You can't ask for much more success going into conference play. I just hope we can maintain the momentum.

Adam West (Kansas State Sentinel - Knickerbocker): Considering that you have coached players like Kyle O'Quinn, Femi Ramsey and Duncan Sow, where do DaMarcus Ross and Dannorriss Walls rank among the names of the post players you've had on your sidelines?
Guy West: Now that's interesting. I'm not usually one to rank players like this, especially when DeMarcus and Dannorriss do not have a full season under their belts. I mean, O'Quinn and Ramsey are already in the NBA -- so that eclipses what most college players will ever achieve. And Sow is a ferocious defender who I hope ends up in the pros as well. Do players on my roster have the talent to make it to the NBA stage? Yes. Have they shown so far a willingness to put in the extra work to make that happen? Yes. They're both raw because they both started basketball late compared to kids who hit the AAU circuit at 11 or 12. But I think both have the potential to be in the conversation if they keep working hard.
Adam West: Well, to turn from the future to the present, your weakest conference opponent is rated higher than all but one of the out-of-conference schools you played. Do you feel that those games have adequately prepared you for Big XII conference play?
Guy West: I hope so. We played some big time opponents in some tough venues, and overall our young guys responded well. Comparing what teams looked like in the pre-season versus here in January, yes, it does look like we'll be facing an uphill climb in the Big XII. Our work in practice and our winning experience so far this season should help, but there's a different quality to the basketball once conference season starts. A lot of our guys are going to be experiencing that for the first time, and that's just something they'll have to play through.
Yvette Herrera (Dallas Morning Dispatch): If that is the case, are you going to be relying more on your veterans, especially Moses Mathis and Roger Guzman, in the latter parts of the year?
West: I try my best to put the best talent on the floor to help us win games. Moses and Roger are both quality players who will be giving us quality minutes, but barring injury I do not foresee a wholesale change to the line-up or rotation.

West: We have good talent in the top 9 or 10 of our rotation. We don't have as much of a talent gap as teams who might rely on one or two high quality players and a bunch of moving pieces. So yes, our bench will continue to see minutes and hopefully it keeps everyone from wearing out at the end of the season.

West: Honestly, it's just going to boil down to letting the young guys play it out. If we can keep up our early season form, great. But eventually we're going to face adversity, and it's important in developing young players to stick with them through the ups and the downs. My team is up to the task, and I think we have a shot at making some noise.
Vandyredskins: So you think that the out of conference success was not an anomaly, but a sign of great things to come for KSU?
West: You don't get 10 wins by chance no matter who you play if that's what you're asking. But this is a young KSU squad that is going to be getting up to 6 more players to throw into the rotation next year. We're still in a transition. So far things have been going great, but this is the first building block of a larger plan.
Samuel Conroy (Des Moines Chronicle): Do you still see yourself in that larger plan? Do you think you have done enough to save your job after such a rocky start in Manhattan?
West: I want to be here to see things through. I can't speculate on what my job status is other than to say that everyone here has been working hard to bring success to Manhattan, and I think we're in the process of turning a corner.
Samuel Conroy: Ten wins is impressive so far, sure. But is "turning a corner" enough, or do you think you will need to end the 12 year NCAA Tournament drought at Kansas State to keep your job?
West: I think reaching the Big Dance is a worthy goal for this year. But that can't be the only criteria for keeping a coach. There's a lot more to the job, although I would love to end the drought as well. But we need to take care of business first
Harold DuPont (Omaha City News): Speaking of business, how does it feel to kick off the conference schedule against arch-rival Kansas, and with them having a down year what do you think your chances are.
West: I don't know if there is such a thing as a "down" year in Lawrence -- you can't sleep on the Jayhawks. It's going to be great and I look forward to seeing everyone fill Bramlage Coliseum. We're young and they're in a transition between some of their star players and some of their new recruits, but it's going to be a scrappy game. They're going to come at us hard early, and I want my team to be prepared for it. We have a good squad who can match their physicality, but they have shooters who can space the floor and keep our team honest. It'll be fun for the fans, and fun for the players too. It's the kind of game that's easy to get up and coach for.
