The Life And Times of Tyrell Coley (CH2k8 Re-Start)

Hamilton, NY -- Colgate University Athletic Director David Roach announced today that head basketball coach Emmett Davis was stepping down from his position after 12 years on the Raiders' sidelines. Davis has a 156-191 (.450) record as head coach at Colgate, the only school he has spent his coaching career at. Replacing Davis as head coach will be Tyrell Coley, a former high school varsity basketball coach at Thomas Edison High School in Queens, NY. Coley, while young (25 years old), has already built a name for himself in his four years at Edison, as the Inventors has made their way to the NYC A Division Championship in the last two seasons, winning once. He also has led the Inventors to three Queens Boro championships during his time. Only time will tell if Coley's skills will transfer to the college scene and prove he is truly ready for the rigors of D-I basketball.

"I am very humbled to be asked to take over here at Colgate." Coley said. "New York is a great basketball city and I know that the program here has what it takes to evolve as one of the better teams in the state, and eventually the country. The only place we want to go from here is up."

Colgate is coming off a 10-19 (6-8) season, finishing sixth in the eight team Patriot League. The schools only has two NCAA Tournament appearances in its history, making the tournament in the 1995 and 1996 seasons. They were bounced out in the first round on both occasions, losing to Kansas and UConn respectively.

Thanks. I wanted to play with a New York school, and Colgate and Army were to the only two options. I just didn't see myself as an Army game, and Colgate is a challenge within a challenge. Not only are they on the lower end of basketball schools, but they also don't have a lot of big men, something I always like to have when playing.

I'm looking forward to this season.

                  Cotterell Court - Hamilton, NY

For the first 25 minutes of the first game in Coach Tyrell Coley's career, he had the Colgate Raiders firing on all cylinders. Leading by as much as 11 points, Colgate went into halftime with a 35-29 lead over the Albany Great Danes.

Too bad a game last 40 minutes.

Albany outscored Colgate 44-24 in the second half to blow out the Raiders in their season opener by a final score of 73-59. Whether Colgate got too comfortable with their lead is debatable, but the Raiders got cold in the second half and Albany took advantage.

Having just three players over 6'8" proved to be a grave problem in the second half, as Albany poured in 30 of their 44 points in the paint during the last 20 minutes.

Coach's Comments: We played some horrible defense in the second half, just came out flat. Nothing much else I can say about that other than we just didn't stick to the gameplan in the second half. I think we were a little lackadaisical on defense too, only forcing 3 turnovers. Not forcing the issue let Albany get into their plays and do what they do best. I saw some good things, I saw some things that need improvement. You can't win 'em all.

I'm going on vacation next week, and will not have my PS3 with me. I'll try to get a game played tonight and Saturday and put out updates for them, but after that I'll be on hiatus until the 25th.

Unfortunately between work, cleaning up my house before my trip, and packing for said trip (not to mention the NBA Playoffs), I didn't get to play any games last weekend. So no updates for a week. I'll do my absolute best to play a game on Easter and post an update (I return from vacation Saturday night).

I got back home from vacation last night, so I'll probably try to get a game in today. I was going to play now, but 300 is on and I love that movie. So if I don't get a game in this afternoon, I will do so tonight.

I think I'm going to play maybe once a week, so that I don't burn myself out (I plan to play until I either no longer have a coaching job or I retire). Plus with work, studying (taking some classes at home), coaching a little league baseball team and working out I won't have a lot of free time on my hands.

                          Thanks for your patience.

Colgate (0-1) at St. Bonaventure (2-0)
                            Reilly Center - Allegany, NY

Fresh off losing their home opener, Coach Tyrell Coley and the Colgate Raiders traveled to Allegany, NY to take on the St. Bonaventure Bonnies. Colgate started out keeping the game at a slow pace, and it was effective for the first six minutes as the Raiders held onto a slim lead.

But that lead wouldn't last long, as St. Bonaventure broke out on an early run and took a lead they would never relinquished. Colgate managed to stay within arm's length, as they went into halftime down by nine.

Colgate opened the second half with five quick points, but that spurt was short lived. St. Bonaventure stepped up tremendously on defense and forced turnover after turnover as they plowed ahead to a insurmountable lead to pick up their third win of the season and send the Raiders to 0-2.

Coach's Comments: "I'm not going to sugar coat this loss; we played like absolute crap. We did a horrible job keeping them off the offensive glass in the first half, we did a horrible job holding onto the ball in the second half, and overall we applied no pressure to their offense. None whatsoever. It's like these guys are satisfied with just being on the court. The season will not continue at this pace, I'm not going to allow it. [shakes head]"
