WILL THE BROWN BEARS FIRE COLBY ROGERS?

4/8/13 - Providence, RI: With teams now firing and hiring coaches, Brown has a decision to make: Should Colby Rogers get another chance?

If the Tennessee Volunteers decided, Rogers would be gone. Cuanzo Martin has been fired after just two seasons in the SEC. Mark Gottfried also has been fired after two years at NC State after going 13-15.

After just two seasons, the Brown Bears have been a combined 18-34 (13-15) under Colby Rogers. So why should Rogers get another chance in a year where there are nearly 65 teams without a coach? There are definitely plenty of fish in the sea so why not try a new coach out? Especially after everything that has happened over the past two seasons under Rogers.

There was the ejection in the last game of the season last year in a game that could have meant a lot in terms of winning the conference. And of course there was the controversy earlier this season on how Rogers treated his players.

A big reason a lot of people think that Colby Rogers should stay is because a lot of people believe that once Rogers recruits the players he wants, he will be more successful. Since only one person on the roster was not inherited, many believe that Rogers hasn't had a true chance to shine. Well with the trend has been to fire coaches left and right, lets see if the trend extends up to Providence, Rhode Island.

Already, two Ivy League coaches have been fired (Penn and Dartmouth). Will there be a third?

BROWN SEEMS TO HAVE MADE GOOD DECISION IN KEEPING ROGERS

5/5/13 - Providence, RI: With the spring recruiting period coming to an end, the Brown Bears have brought in the #31 ranked recruiting class. "All 4 of the guys that we signed, signed during the offseason" said Rogers, "It was as good as any one of us could have asked for."

Now, lets take a look at this recruiting class that is getting everyone digging in their closets for that Bears shirt they got for Christmas.

                        Brown Bears Recruiting - 2012-13
                        NAMEPOSCLASSHOMETOWNHTWTCALIBER
                        Jermaine MacliesSFHSAurora, Illinois6'5200
                        Joey WhelessCHSBrooklyn, New York7'0263
                        Gabe RiddleSGHSNewton, Massachusetts6'3188
                        Izik BozemanCHSChicago, Illinois7'1245

Jermaine Maclies - Maclies comes out of Illinois. Teams that were interested includes Michigan, Minnesota, Purdue, Wisconsin, etc. Maclies is known for his defense which is already thought to be the best on the Bears before open gym has even started. The 4* also has a very good mid-range and can drive to the basket.

"Whether or not he is day one starter is something I don't know yet. There is a lot of time before the season starts next season, but it would not surprise me if he gets the starting nod."

Joey Wheless - Joey Wheless was only 6'10 when Brown was recruting him. When they went to weigh him and check his height, the Bears were pleasantly surprised to see him come in at a whopping 7'0, 263 lbs. Wheless will easily be the strongest player in the Ivy League, and he has yet to play a game. He has a great touch around the basket and uses a wide array of post moves.

"This is the kind of kid that I have been praying for since I have stepped on campus here two years ago. If he reaches his full potential, he can be a game changer."

Gabe Riddle - Riddle had been recruited extremely hard throughout the season. Riddle is mainly known as a defensive specialist and will be able to give good minutes right away. Riddle has a good pull-up jumper and is very strong from 15' in. He is weak from the 3 point line which is disappointing, but his play on the other end of the floor will make up for his poor shooting.

"Riddle is a player that we found in the ABL at the beginning of the year. He is an athletic player and if used right, can be a very good 4 year player here. He will be an immediate impact on the defensive end and hopefully will be able to improve from the 3 point line as time goes on."

Izik Bozeman - Bozeman was offered a scholarship exactly one week before the end of the signing period but was heavily recruited all season long. Bozeman is one of the better 2* recruits and comes in as the #36 ranked big man. He is fast for a big man and is known as a hustle player. Bozeman also has a nice shooting touch around the basket.

"Bozeman is a very nice player who can give us solid minutes right away. He is a good rebounder and is a big body on defense. We can also go to him down low on the post with confidence. Good luck scoring on this kid."

                        What the Bears are losing

The Bears are losing 4 players; one at every position except for the point guard position. The most noticeable of the four that are leaving is Tucker Halpern. He has been the leading scorer for the team the past two years. However, he had started to fade as his senior year went on. Andrew McCarthy, another post player, was a guy who could get you a few points but that was about it. He was a weak post player and could not rebound. Tyler Ponticelli, was a defensive specialist. He was the best defender on the team and was called on whenever needed. Lastly, Matt Sullivan was a very good shooter with no other skills.

Summary: The Bears lose 2 good scorers in Halpern and McCarthy. They also lose a very good defender in Ponticelli. However, with the recruiting class that Coach Rogers has assembled, Brown should not be worried about taking any steps backwards, but should be excited for the season will bring.
