Durant's 37 leads Thunder to series tying win

OKLAHOMA CITY -- The Oklahoma City Thunder stormed back after a game one loss to tie their best of seven NBA Finals series against the Chicago Bulls.

Kevin Durant scored 37 points as the Thunder dominated the Bulls on both ends of the court to take game two 104-79.

"You can just sense it in us that we weren't going to give up, we were going to be resilient," Durant said when asked how the team reacted to the game one loss.

Thunder sixth man James Harden scored 18 points in the first half and finished the game with 22. Russell Westbrook added 13 points and 9 assists in the blowout win.

The Bulls only lead of the game came after they scored the first basket, from their the Thunder took control and led by as many 30 points in the second half.

Derrick Rose led the Bulls with 18 points, Hedo Turkoglu had 17, and Dwight Howard added 14 but only managed to grab 3 rebounds in the loss.

"We're a veteran team and we don't get too high with the highs and too low with the lows," Rose said after the game.

"We just didn't execute," Howard said. "There's no shock. There's disappointment. But the reality is the reality. We might as well get used to it and focus on the next one."

The Bulls still hold the advantage as the series as the next three games will take place in Chicago starting with game three on Sunday night.

Bulls take 2-1 lead thanks to Hedo's game winner

CHICAGO -- For the first time since the days of Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, and Phil Jackson the Chicago Bulls were playing an NBA Finals game in front of their home crowd.

In a hotly contested back and fourth game in became evident that the team with the last shot would most likely get the win.

Chicago ended up getting more than "last shot."

Derrick Rose drove the lane with 5 seconds left in game and let go a floater that bounced of the back iron. Dwight Howard and Carlos Boozer each tipped the rebound which eventually landed in the hands of Hedo Turkoglu just inside the foul line, where he sank the game winner as the final horn sounded giving the Bulls a 94-92 win and a 2-1 lead in the series.

"This is a total win," said Hedo, who led Chicago with 25 points.

Derrick Rose scored 19 points with 8 assists, and Carlos Boozer added 14 points and 9 rebounds to help the Bulls regain control of the best of seven series.

History says this is a huge win for the Bulls. The Game 3 winner in a tied finals has won the championship 11 of 12 times since the 2-3-2 format began in 1985. Of course the one time that team did not win the title was last season when the Miami Heat won game 3 but lost the series to the Dallas Mavericks.

Kevin Durant led the Thunder with 29 points. Russell Westbrook and James Harden each had 13 points with Westbrook adding 10 assists.

"We have to have somebody step up besides Kevin," said Westbrook. "We have to figure out how to get up front and play up front. The big thing is we've got to be able to make plays late in the game. Game 2 we made the plays, Game 3 we just didn't."

"Now we just have to move on," Thunder coach Scott Brooks said. "The tough part right now is amnesia. Both teams are highly competitive, this is a competitive series as you can see. We have to really gather ourselves in 48 hours and get back on track."

Game four will take place Tuesday night as the Bulls look to take a commanding lead and the Thunder look to tie the series once again.

Thunder pull even with Bulls after game 4 win

CHICAGO -- Kevin Durant was determined to not let his team fall behind three games to one in the NBA Finals.

Durant scored 35 points and grabbed 8 rebounds as the Thunder were able to tie the series at two games apiece with a 91-86 win over the Bulls Tuesday night.

And now the Oklahoma City Thunder and Chicago Bulls are starting over in the NBA finals, this best-of-seven series reduced to a best-of-three.

"Just battle it out," Durant said, "This is the finals. You have to go out there and compete and try your best for your team. So that's what I did."

James Harden was the only other Thunder player in double figures with 13 points, he also tied Serge Ibaka for the team high in rebounds with 10.

Russell Westbrook had his worst scoring performance of the playoffs with 8 points, but he made up for the low-scoring with a his personal playoff high 13 assists.

Carlos Boozer led the Bulls with 23 points and 11 rebounds and Derrick Rose added 20 points in the loss.

"I've got to do a better job of being more assertive offensively," said Rose, who nonetheless contributed seven rebounds and seven assists. "I'm confident in my ability. It's just about going out there and knocking them down."

Dwight Howard came up small on offense once again with just 6 points, but he did add 4 steals and 3 blocks on the defensive end.

"This series is a jump ball," Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau said. "These guys live for these type of moments. It's about execution and disposition in the fourth quarter, being able to close out. We have a golden opportunity in the next game."

"These are two teams trying to figure out a way to make plays down the stretch," Rose said. "We've seen in this series a seven- or eight-point lead is nothing. You just got to continue to execute offensively, continue to grind defensively, and put yourself in the best possible chance to win late."

Chicago will get one more chance to take control of the series in front of their fans when game 5 tips off Thursday night.

Thunder take 3-2 series lead with 117-113 OT victory

CHICAGO -- Kevin Durant thrust both arms in the air, a sea disappointed Bulls fans around him and the Oklahoma City Thunder finally ahead in these ultra-close NBA Finals.

Now it is "now or never" for Derrick Rose, Dwight Howard and the Chicago Bulls.

Durant scored 59 points, including the go-ahead dunk with 45 seconds remaining in overtime, and the Thunder beat the Bulls 117-113 on Thursday night to take a 3-2 lead.

Dwight Howard finally came through for the Bulls scoring 24 points and grabbing 10 rebounds in the loss. Derrick Rose, whose three-point play sent the game into OT, finished with 14 points and 8 rebounds.

"I could have made a couple of more plays for my team," Rose said. "But at the end of the day, all it's about is a win or a loss.

Russell Westbrook recovered from a tough game four with 17 points and 9 assists and Serge Ibaka added a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds.

"We fought hard all season for home-court advantage. We're up 3-2," Westbrook said. "We protect home court, we win the series, so we just have to keep that in mind."

"We made more shots," Thunder coach Scott Brooks said. "We did a lot of good things defensively, which led to good offense. ... You never know when the games are going to go that way. The thing we've got to do is we've got to make sure our defense is consistent."

Oklahoma City will get their first chance to close out the series and win the franchise it's first title since the 1978-79 when they were the Seattle SuperSonics. Game 6 will take place Saturday night in Oklahoma City.

Thunder close out Bulls in 6, win NBA Title

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Kevin Durant now has an impressive NBA resume for a 23 year old. Three scoring titles, a league MVP, and an NBA Championship.

For Derrick Rose and Dwight Howard, the agonizing wait continues for at least one more year.

"I really still can't believe it," said Durant, who had 28 points and took home Finals MVP honors.

Russell Westbrook did what many believed he could not, in taking on the role of Robin to Durant's Batman. Westbrook scored 12 points and dished out 10 assists in the series deciding victory.

"Tonight," Westbrook said, "we got vindication."

"We worked so hard and long for it," Durant said. "The team has had an unbelievable ride."

So did the Bulls. Unlike Oklahoma City, theirs wasn't a joyride.

"It goes without saying," Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau said. "You're never really prepared for a moment like this. ... Neither team deserved this championship more than the other, but they earned it."

Neither Rose nor Howard had what would be considered a great series, a fact that was evident as neither player scored in double figures in the series deciding game.

"We feel it," Rose said after the game. "We'll feel it even more tomorrow."

"We give credit to the Thunder," Howard said. "They're a helluva team. ... We ran into a team that at this time is obviously better than us."

As the night wore on, the smell of champagne permeated from the Thunder locker room, while Chicago's was cleaned and vacuumed quickly, towels picked up, shower shoes stacked neatly before each player's locker. Nearby, in the team's usual postgame interview room, the Thunder posed with the championship trophy, whooping in joy as Bulls players filed out in stunned disbelief.

Now the offseason begins, new story lines will develop, but until this time next year the Oklahoma City Thunder are the NBA Champions.
