I just read through your dynasty! It is very interesting! I am glad that you have decided to keep it going! After such an up and down 1st season, I really look forward to seeing how Coach Coley improves heading into year 2 of his career. Maybe they can find a way to grind out a few more conference wins and make a run at the conference title!

Great work! I am definitely following!

Thanks for reading! The first season definitely was an up and down one, I would attribute it to me learning the playbook and good animations. I haven't been able to shoot well with this team just yet because I wasn't creating a lot of space or running decent plays. But I think as the season came to an end I started figuring things out.

Now if only I could get some recruits we'll be all set for season 2!

              2008 Recruiting Class

Recruiting proved to be difficult for Coach Coley in his first season at Long Island. With three scholarships available, the Blackbirds weren't able to get anyone to sign during the early signing period and only managed to get one person to officially commit in the off-season.

Joining Long Island for the 2008-2009 season is Jerome Bigelow. The 7-foot-1, 244-pound center from Tempe, AZ is a two-star prospect. Bigelow averaged 16 rebounds per 40 minutes during his ABL summer season in the Central region's In Too Deep squad.

With both Kellen Allen and Paska Morkeliunas graduating, Long Island only had two players taller than 6-foot-6 on their roster so size was a necessity.

Long Island did have other recruits interested in joining the team but none signed the dotted line by the end of the recruiting period.

"It's disappointing to not get the best players you can find." said Coley. "We're happy that Jerome is a part of our program and we look forward to making him the best player we can. As for other recruits, we will just have to prove ourselves on the court and the rest will take care of itself."

Duke signed the #1 recruiting class, bringing in 3 All-Americans among their 4 recruits. Arizona, North Carolina, Boston College and Washington State rounded out the Top 5.

              Signed Recruits
              Jerome Bigelow - 7'1", 244 - Tempe, AZ - Not Ranked - 2*

Long Island had 4 other recruits on their list. One 1* was at 100% but was not offerred. The two that did receive offers were at 83% and 82% interest by the end of the signing period.

Re: The Coaching Legacy of Tyrell Coley (Ch2k8)

Great to see the preseason break down! I look forward to seeing if Coach Coley can improve upon his 1st season. I am hoping that LIU rallies and finishes higher than 10th in the conference!

Bigelow is an interesting prospect. He definitely has the size to take Long Island's post game to a new level, but he also has a low rating. Hopefully he can develop as the season goes, and work his way into the starting lineup.

Definitely could have done a better job recruiting wise (also, does anyone know if there is an easier way to find out the ranking of your recruiting class without having to count down the list?), but as a friend told me "You can't coach size." In the 20 minute Midnight Madness exhibition, Bigelow had 12 points, 9 rebounds and 3 blocks. I wasn't sure if I was going to use him that much but he's earned at least that. He might even make the starting lineup if I have to go big on size.

I am going to have to switch my defense to a 2-3 zone to deal with the lack of size. Had to move my 6-6 SG to SF this season and I have to play him at PF.

Hopefully we can play better than our rating, otherwise I'm going to be on the hot seat.

                      November 7, 2008 - Convocation Center - Harrisonburg, VA
Long Island (0-0) at James Madison (0-0)

Long Island fell victim to the tale of two halves, as a 13 point halftime lead evaporated in their season opening 75-66 loss to James Madison. The Blackbirds lead by as many as 15 points in the first half before James Madison came out the second half on fire and clawed their way back into the game.

"It's not the way we wanted to start the season." said Coach Coley. "We started off very well, but after they switched to a zone defense we had trouble scoring. They adjusted and figured out how to beat us."

Kyle Johnson lead all scorers with 23 points off 50% shooting, and added six rebounds playing out of position as the power forward spot. Ike Udanoh was the only other player for Long Island with double digit scoring, putting in 11 points.

For James Madison, the shooting was spectacular from deep as they shot 40% from beyond the arc. Leading the way for the Dukes was Joe Posey, who came off the bench to score 22 points with six made three-pointers. Keithan Bruff added 17 for the Dukes while Abdulai Jalloh had 11 points and six assists.

Long Island's defense nosedived at the beginning of the second half with James Madison's hot three point shooting. Adding in 16 turnovers didn't help the cause as Long Island never got closer than five points in the closing minutes of the game.

November 10, 2008 - Wellness, Recreation and Athletic Center - Brooklyn, NY
Army (1-0) at Long Island (0-1)

Long Island tore apart Army's 2-3 zone defense to take as large as a 20 point lead before coasting to a 72-64 victory in their home opener. The Blackbirds offense was founded on teamwork as 23 of the 26 shots they made occurred on assists. Surprisingly enough it was the big men who had the smooth passes with Ike Udanoh, Aurimas Adomaitis, and Jerome Bigelow combined for 20 assists.

Udanoh led the way with 17 points, eight assists, six rebounds and four steals for Long Island. Kyle Johnson added 12 points and five rebounds will playing with what is reportedly a pulled quad muscle. Johnson is listed as day-to-day.

With the backups i for Long Island, Army tried to fight their way back into the game but it proved too little too late. Jeremy Hence led all scorers with 18 points and five rebounds, and Marcus Nelson added 11 points in the loss.

November 13, 2008 - Yanitelli Recreation Life Center - Jersey City, NJ
                          Long Island (1-1) at Saint Peter's (2-0)

Long Island couldn't get out of their own way, as the Blackbirds committed 14 turnovers that ultimately lead to their 66-64 defeat at the hands of Saint Peter's.

Damond Bremer led all scorers with a career-high 23 points off 5-of-8 three point shooting for Saint Peter's. Jon Hogga added 12 points and Cortez Gregory added 10 for the Peacocks, who never trailed by more than six points in a back and forth contest.

Long Island kept the game around one possession, but in the second half they were never able to take a lead from Saint Peter's. Ike Udanoh led the Blackbirds with 19 points and nine rebounds, while Kyle Johnson added 14 points, seven rebounds, and three assists and freshman Jerome Bigelow recorded the first double-double of the season with 17 points and 11 rebounds.

Long Island continues to be one-dimensional on offense, as they rarely take any three pointers and even less have gone in. The Blackbirds were 0-for-2 tonight, and are shooting 6.2% from beyond the arc this season (1-for-16).

While they've shot poorly from three, Long Island has kept themselves in the game by attacking the basket, as evident by the 36 free throws they attempted against Saint Peter's.

"I'm not saying it's easier to make shots from close range." said Coach Coley. "But I want our guys to be aggressive, to attack the basket and make the defense afraid to battle us in the trenches. We can work the offense inside out and the shots will far, I'm not worried."

November 17, 2008 - Wellness, Recreation, and Athletic Center - Brooklyn, NY
Coppin State (1-1) at Long Island (1-2)

Cesloves Kucinskas scored 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead Coppin State to a 71-64 win over Long Island.

Kucinskas was joined by Ethan Kennedy (11) and Chuka Ildegbu (10) in scoring double figures, and overcame an early first half deficit to hold the Blackbirds at bay.

Long Island lead by as much as six points in the first half before a run eight minutes before intermission handed Coppin State a lead that they would never relinquish. Playing from behind, Long Island's one-dimensional offense couldn't overcome the deficit as no one on the team seems to be able to shoot from beyond 15 feet.

Even some shots at point blank range didn't fall.

"We took good shots, we just didn't make them." said Coach Coley. "I can't fault these kids for taking good shots, that's what we wanted. We just have to not let it frustrate us and affect our defensive pressure."

Kyle Johnson scored a career-high 25 points and added seven rebounds to lead Long Island. Ike Udanoh struggled mightily in his attempt to assist Johnson scoring wise, making just 1-of-7 attempts to finish with three points.

Aurimas Adomaitis added 13 points and five rebounds.

Long Island will look to stop the two-game losing streak Friday at home against N.J.I.T.

NJIT (0-3) at Long Island (1-3)

A SECOND LATE AND A BUCKET SHORT

It's the same old story for Long Island. Build a lead and lose it all before halftime. Never fall too far behind to be out of the game. Attempt a comeback late and fall short. While this comeback came closer than recent opportunities, the standings still add one more in the loss column after Long Island's 64-63 loss to NJIT.

Long Island continues to struggle from beyond the arc, failing to score on any of their six attempts from deep. Long Island is shooting 8% from beyond the arc this season.

"I'm not concerned whether we're taking threes or twos." said Coach Coley. "If it's an open, good shot - that's all that matters. We keep taking those and the wins and the stats will come with it."

For now those are just pretty words as Long Island is on a three game losing streak and things aren't looking to get any easier. Three of their next four contests will be away from Brooklyn including two conference opponents who know Long Island pretty well.

Kyle Johnson and Ike Udanoh paced Long Island with double-double performances, but even they had to fight for their baskets. Size is becoming an issue for Long Island as they aren't able to get shots over most defenders.

Brendon Lyn led all scorers with 18 points for NJIT.

The Highlanders led by as much as nine in the second half, but Long Island managed to keep the game close albeit taking too long to complete the comeback. After a Tyler Epps miss, Long Island ran down the floor and Ron Manigault made a put back attempt with 1.2 seconds left. Long Island attempted to foul on the inbound, but NJIT simply threw the ball toward midcourt, not giving Long Island a chance to take a decent shot before time expired.

Long Island has almost a week away from the court before taking on Lafayette at home.

Tough loss to NJIT. I know that was one that you felt LIU could win before the season started. Hopefully LIU can pull it together and get some momentum heading into conference play.

You may need to look to get Bigelow more playing time. 8 points and 7 boards off the bench is pretty impressive. He could become a solid double-double threat if he's given more time.

Great work as always! Looking forward to updates!
