Re: The Coaching Legacy of Tyrell Coley (Ch2k8)

Rumors are circulating that with the conclusion of the 2007 UCF Holiday Classic, Coach Tyrell Coley has overhauled his lineup and will be introducing a different starting five next week against Sacred Heart. Here is the projected lineup for Long Island

    Starters
    F Aurimas Adomaitis (6-8 SO)
    F Ike Udanoh (6-7 FR)
    F Eugene Kotorbai (6-5 SR)
    G Ron Manigault (6-4 JR)
    G Jaytornah Wisseh (6-1 SO)

    Reserves
    F Kellen Allen (6-7 SR)
    G Kyle Johnson (6-4 FR)
    G Tyrone Mattison (5-11 JR)
    F Albert Forbes (6-5 JR)
    F Paska Morkeliuns (6-7 SR)

There is no word on whether or not Coach Coley will remove the redshirts off guards David Hicks (6-1 FR) and Alan Mozee (6-0 FR), but the belief for the time being is no. Forward Gerald Carter (6-4 JR) is currently sitting out the season per transfer rules.

      Sacred Heart (10-4, 3-0) vs Long Island (5-8, 0-2)
Athletic, Recreation, and Wellness Center - Brooklyn, NY

Another game and another blowout for Long Island as Sacred Heart refused to let up their full court press despite a double digit lead late in the game as the Pioneers roll by the Blackbirds 82-57.

"I don't have anything to say about it." said LIU Coach Coley. "I'm focused on getting my team to play well, that's for others to feel upset about."

Sacred Heart (11-4, 4-0) got out to an early 8-2 advantage as Long Island began the game in a 2-3 zone defense to no avail. With a quick timeout, the Blackbirds switched back to man defense while attacking the basket on offense helped them stay in the game.

Albert Forbes hit a three and Kyle Johnson added an elbow jumper to lead to a Sacred Heart timeout with the score 17-16 in the Pioneers favor.

The game soon followed runs similar to a rubber band, with Sacred Heart pulling away only for Long Island to claw back in the game. It would be the Pioneers who would make the last run before the half, taking a 38-31 lead into the locker rooms.

Shooting 50% from the field and forcing eight turnovers played a big part in the Sacred Heart offense.

"Too many guys were open." said Coley. "You're giving away points when you sag off of shooters. It's a matter of execution. We stay on our man on defense and maybe the game is closer."

The second half started out a lot better for Long Island, though they could never get over the final hump. On several occasions, the Blackbirds cut the lead down to two and had possessions where they could have tied the game or taken the lead only to fail to execute.

Soon those chances were long gone as jumper after jumper began to fall for Sacred Heart and the game easily went out of reach.

With the loss, Long Island is still winless in conference play and have lost their last four games. They will have a chance to end those woes on Thursday with a home game against St. Francis NY (8-7, 2-2).

        Thursday - January 10, 2008
St. Franics (NY) (8-7, 2-2) at Long Island (5-9, 0-3)
Athletic, Recreation, and Wellness Center - Brooklyn, NY

Excellent defense and a lead as large as 20 points allowed Long Island to cruise to their first victory in conference play, beating St. Francis (NY) by a score a 61-52.

While leading scorer Eugene Kotorbai struggled shooting the ball - making just 3 of 20 attempts and missing all 10 threes - several other players stepped up on both sides of the ball. Kellen Allen led all scorers with 16 points off the bench, while Kyle Johnson and Ike Udanoh each added 14 points.

"Our defense was pretty strong and that's what I'm happy about." said Coach Coley. "We kept them from shooting too well and we did our best at limiting them to one shot per possession. It's an all around good win."

St. Franics (8-8, 2-3) shot just 29% from the floor and 15% from beyond the arc, a terrible shooting performance from the team all around.

Robert Hines led the Terriers with 14 points and seven rebounds.

Aurimas Adomaitis shined in just his second start of the season, recording a double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds, even adding two blocks in the win.

Long Island (6-9, 1-3) doesn't have long to celebrate the win as they play again Saturday on the road against Central Connecticut State (7-9, 2-3).

Hopefully the win over St. Francis is a sign of things to come, but with the team kind of being up and down it looks like you won't know what team you will get out of the box until you're on the floor.

          Good luck vs CCSU.

I'm starting to get some of an idea of what the team can do. Surprisingly I was complaining about not having another good shooter and then I went to my stats and saw Kyle Johnson (the freshman) is shooting 31% from 3.

Johnson and Kotorbai are good shooters, while Udanoh and Allen are pretty good big men. I started using Adomaitis and Morkeliunas for size even though they have really low overall ratings. Since I have those six available, I tend to put them on the court in those groups of three so I always have some scoring threats as well as keeping my players fresh.

Thanks for the luck, I might need it lol.

                Saturday - January 12, 2008
Long Island (6-9, 1-3) at Central Connecticut State (7-9, 2-3)
                William H. Detrick Gymnasium

New Britain, CT -- Behind 24 points from guard Tristan Blackwood, Central Connecticut State used a late second half surge to pull away from Long Island and cruise to a 69-51 victory.

Blackwood was just one point shy of his career high in points, making 6 of 16 threes and adding five assists in the win. The three ball fell for the Blue Devils late in the game, as Long Island had previously used a 3-2 zone to help claw back into the game.

Central Connecticut State led for most of the first half, before a strong start out the locker rooms from Long Island gave the Blackbirds a lead as large as six.

But then the Blue Devils got hot from beyond the arc, and Long Island could never recover as they have now lost four of five games against conference opponents.

"It was a tough one." said Coach Coley. "The 3-2 zone helped us get back into the game, but then they just started making most of their shots, contested or not. We didn't do a good job of taking care of the ball, and we didn't shoot very well ourselves."

Long Island will play Wagner (7-8, 1-3) next at home in Brooklyn.

                    Wagner (8-8, 2-3) at Long Island (6-10, 1-4)
                    Thursday - January 17, 2008 - Brooklyn, NY

Despite facing a second half deficit that reached double digits, Long Island found their stroke from beyond the arc and they escaped with a 76-67 win over Wagner tonight.

The Seahawks (8-9, 2-4) should have had the game in the bag, holding a 57-45 lead with six minutes to play. Despite all the turnovers - both teams coughed it up a combined 26 times - Wagner had managed to keep Long Island at bay as well as pad the lead with some fine interior offense.

"We didn't give up out there tonight." said Long Island head coach Tyrell Coley. "It was a tough hole to climb out of after making our share of mistakes, but we keep fighting. That's what you want out of your players, we didn't settle and eventually found our shot."

Long Island (7-10, 2-4) hit five threes in those final six minutes on six attempts, whereas they had gone 6-for-14 beforehand. Leading the way for the Blackbirds was the efforts of Eugene Kotorbai behind the arc and Ike Udanoh in the paint. Udanoh lead all scorers with 22 points on 10-of-20 shooting, and pulled down 12 rebounds.

Kotorbai was 6-of-11 from the arc, scoring 20 points.

Wagner came out early and silenced the home crowd as they opened the game on a 9-2 run. It took a much needed timeout for Long Island to regroup and tie up the game, and from there it was back and forth contest.

Wagner would take a 32-29 lead into halftime, unable to pull away from Long Island anymore than they had at the beginning of the game.

The Blackbirds came out in the second half sloppy, turning the ball over on three consecutive possessions and picking up four quick fouls. Wagner's lead swelled near double digits while Long Island fought just to find their shot let alone get back in the game.

"We always seen to have that rough patch in the second half." said Kotorbai. "It's something that's got to stop, we can't rely of those late heroics everytime."

For the first time all season, Long Island had five scorers in double figures as starters Ron Manigault and Jaytornah Wisseh had 10 and 11 points respectively, while Kellen Allen came off the bench and scored 11 points of his own.

Wagner's offense was led by James Ulrich, who dominated inside to the tune of 17 points and nine rebounds. Joey Mundweiler was the only other Seahawk to reach double figures, scores 15.

The final score would have been closer if not for Wagner being forced to intentionall foul Long Island players in an attempt to get more chances to score. Unfortunately for them, the Blackbirds connected on their free throws while Wagner's shots were few and far in between during the waning minutes.

Long Island will be back on the court shortly, as they travel to Hamden, CT for Saturday afternoon's game against Quinnipiac (11-6, 5-1). The Bobcats are winners of their last four games and hold a share of the Northeast Conference lead along with Sacred Heart and Farleigh Dickinson.

                      Long Island (7-10, 2-4) at Quinnipiac (11-6, 5-1)
                      January 19, 2008 - Hamden, CT

Demario Anderson scored 16 of his game-high 20 points in the second half to lead Quinnipiac to a 71-50 win over Long Island on Saturday.

Anderson was coming off a 32 point, 8 rebound performance in Quinnipiac's last game, a 68-54 win over St. Francis (NY). The guard shot 8-of-16 from the floor.

Poor shooting highlighted the first half as the Blackbirds and Bobcats combined to shoot 29%. Quinnipiac was still able to hold a 25-17 lead into halftime despite the offensive woes.

Evann Baker sparked a 11-2 run early in the second half to help Quinnipiac pull away for good. Baker was the only other Bobcat beside Anderson to score in double figures with 13 points and five rebounds.

Long Island had three players (Ron Manigault, Eugene Kotorbai, and Ike Udanoh) lead the team in scoring with 10 points a piece in their fifth conference loss this season.

Manigault had a season-high nine rebounds.

Yeah, not having size in the middle will bite me from time to time. The sad part is I'm pretty sure he got most of those rebounds on offense.
