Jazz make a late run to shrug of Raptors

SALT LAKE CITY -- The Jazz and Raptors met in Utah to close their season series and there were some bad blood between the two after the last meeting which ended in overtime and you could see it as soon as the game started.

The teams came out in their retro jerseys and their were parts of the performances for each teams that reminded the fans of the past with Demar DeRozan playing the part of Vince Carter flying through the air early in the game to dunk on Paul Millsap but Augustin and Millsap were playing the role of Stockton and Malone in the pick and pop situations that the Jazz got into time after time. One of the plays of the game was when Jose Calderon stole the ball of Millsap in the post and Millsap would race back after Calderon and steal it back for the fast break Slam. The Game was back and forth all night with teams exchanging leads and their was alot of contact in the paint early as Michael Kidd-Gilchrist was showing why he was No.1 pick this year scoring some tough contact lay-ups and getting D.J Augustin into foul trouble. At the Half the teams went in at 50-46 to Toronto and Demar DeRozan playing a big part for the Raptors and Paul Millsap leading the Jazz's cause for a W.

Demar DeRozan doing his Vince Carter impression. He had a great game but couldnt stop the Jazz winning

The Jazz were patchy with their shooting in the 3rd but improved towards the end and finally took the lead through a J.J Redick 3 late in the first but it wouldnt last long as MKG would get to the line again draw the foul drain the bucket and convert on the and 1 and lead going into the 4th quarter. In the 4th Enes Kanter and Derrick Favors played a massive part in the Jazz run which would win them the game with crucial defensive stops and Kanter would convert on an and one to put the Jazz up by 3. The momentum would soon swich for the Jazz when they blocked three straight Raptor shots but near the end of the quarter Amir Johnson would hit a tought contact layup in the post and convert the free throw to take the Jazz lead to 2 but with DeRozan going ice cold towards the end of the 4th and Jerryd Bayless wierdly not taking the last shot with the clock winding down the Jazz would win the game by 3 and chalk up 3 straight wins.

The Raptors now welcome the Cavs to Air Canada Centre and the Jazz head to the big apple to face Melo, Amar'e and the Knicks and they will be hoping to continue thier win streak but it wont be easy up against two of the best scorers in the league and Carmelo Anthony arguably the best cluch performer in the NBA.

Knicks have a big thrid quarter to dismantle Jazz

NEW YORK CITY -- Just when the Jazz were starting to looks good the Knicks come and spoil the party and Carmelo Anthony had a monster game in the process carrying the Knicks through the first two quarters before everyone started chipping in.

It wasn't as one sided as the scoreline suggested as the Jazz had a good opening quarter leading the Knicks by 6 points at one time that was after Melo had got going early and the Knicks had rushed out to a 10 point lead but the Jazz didnt play all bad at all the Knicks were just draining everthing and they played good D not to mention Carmelo Anthony was unguardable chalking up 12 points in the first quarter. The Jazz were behind by at most 6 ponts in the second and their offensive rebounding got them back into it. Melo was trying to do too much at one point but he got hot as soon as he made his next bucket and after that shooting over 50% for the whole game. The teams went in at 51-54 at the Half with Melo on 24 points and carrying the Knicks through the first half but in the second half Shumpert, Amar'e and even Smith (who recently said he was testing free agency) all chipped in in the second half.

Alec Burks hit a nice circus layup in the second Q

When the Jazz players look back on the films they will wish they shot better out of the gate in the second half and they would have probably kept it close if they had defended better too in the thrid quarter because they came out of the second quarter 1/7 while the Knicks trounced them and coming out of the half on 75% shooting on the way to a monster third quarter where the game was won and lost that and the Jazz were just diabolical at rebounding the ball in the 3rd quarter (to be honest they didn't do much right in the 3rd quarter)and Carmelo Anthony continued to make contested shots and layups just bothering the Jazz D and you could see the frustration coming for George Karl. In the 4th the Jazz looked like a completely different team but they had dug themselves into a deep hole with their poor 3rd quarter that it wasn't enough and when the Knicks visit Utah they will want their revenge.

George Karl was able to give a few words:

"Apart from the 3rd quarter we were great and if we had concentrated more on the fundamentals we could have easily matched them for scoring but we didn't now everyone want to forget that game and go into the next one and come out with a win and get back to where we were before this game"

Well the Jazz will face the Hornets and one of the best scorers in the league in Eric Gordon and hopefully they can walk away with the W.

Big 4th Quarter leads Jazz past Eric Gordon and the Hornets

SALT LAKE CITY -- The Jazz were able to recover quickly and get straight back on the winning track after that horrible night in New York but at the expense of the Hornets and Eric Gordon almost prevented the W with a big 29 point night in Utah.

Both teams started poorly with the Hornets shooting 1/10 out of the gate and the Jazz shooting 1/9 no one could seem to find the basket with stray layups and air-balls. Alec Burks had another big night and showed why he could be a big part at the 2 for the Jazz for years to come he score 9 of the Jazz first 10 points. In the second the teams seemed to get back on track shooting better but both still had field goal percentages in the low 30's. Eric Gordon began to pick his game up for the Hornets and Alec Burks continued his scoring in the second too for the Jazz. It was a tightly contested 2nd quarter with a deep Wesley Johnson 3 putting the Hornets up by one going into the break 44-43.

Eric Gordon drains three of his 29 points over J.J Redick

The Jazz's second unit played a big part for them in the 3rd quarter with Jordan Taylor having good scoring numbers again for the Jazz and with Al Jefferson and Paul Millsap having poor scoring nights but both in double digit boards (A.J 11 rebs and P.M 16 rebs) Enes Kanter and Derrick Favors would be key off the bench scoring wise for the Jazz. The Hornets were trying to do too much from the perimeter in the 3rd and it allowed the Jazz to keep up with them in scoring. Relief for the Hornets as Damian Lillard was injured while jumping for a rebound but he would return in the 4th. The forth quarter would be key for the Jazz as the Hornets would take the biggest lead of the game at 11 but the Jazz would fight back and play some stellar defence and cash in on plenty fast break opportunity's and open 3 pointers with D.J Augustin having a huge last quarter and racking up 11 assists for the game and the Jazz would be able to walk away with the W.

Next up for the Jazz will be a visit from Phoenix and a showdown with Steve Nash and the Suns.

Jazz hold off Nash and the Suns

SALT LAKE CITY -- Utah continued their good form and were able to fend off a late Suns comeback in Utah and are now 7-3 in the last 10 games.

The Suns were cold out out of the block and couldn't seem to get anything to work only Steve Nash could see to score for the Suns and even when they got open layups they seem to be bothered by even the smallest defence from the Jazz they did heat up towards the end of the quarter as you could see Steve Nash was trying to motivate his team towards the end of the quarter even though they were struggling to take care of the ball and the Jazz were being given easy baskets. D.J Augustin had a big night scoring 14 points for the Jazz in the first two quarters and they needed that as Al Jefferson was limited due to foul trouble. The teams went in 45-55 to the Jazz at the half.

Derrick Favors lucky he didn't pick up a technical after this slam.

Nash seemed to be doing everthing for the Suns in the third as the limited the Jazz to just a 19 point quarter and they seemed to have a comback on they also got good production from Jeff Teague off the bench and also a great performance for Robin Lopez as well. The Suns' foul shooting was key in the third as they looked to cut into the Jazz lead and you could see George Karl's frustration as they almost threw away a lead which was at one point 15 points. The Suns continued to fight back in the 4th and did take the lead by one point but the Jazz got their foot on the peddle when Al Jefferson came into the game and having a big 10 point quarter and dismantling the Suns defence when he was in the post. D.J Augustin also continued his big night in the 4th and the Suns seemed to have been dead and buried when Paul Millsap hit a tough layup and converted on the and one to put the Jazz up by three they would then take a double digit lead and close the game out comfortably.

The Jazz will now close out January with a game at The Palace of Auburn Hills as they go on a road trip to Detroit to battle Greg Monroe and the Pistons.

Re: Utah Jazz - Dealing with the Hoodoo

                    Stuckey leads Pistons past Jazz

DETROIT -- The Jazz have fallen to another team below .500 and if they are to achieve their aspirations of making a deep play-off run then they need to be beating weaker opponents (you could say it wasn't that bad as Detroit are now 11-8 at home this season) but its not as if the Jazz played bad they did their part on offense it was just their defence that was terrible tonight mainly if they contained Stuckey better they probably would have won.

The Jazz didn't get off to the best of starts either not respecting Detroit's perimeter game and not guarding the three like they should have been and playing somewhat mediocre on both ends of the court in the opening quarter and they would have a 14 point deficit to cut away at early. It was much better in the second with the Jazz doing better defensively but they were still not defending the three and it came back to haunt them later on in the comeback effort. Rebounding was poor all night with the Jazz giving away 7 offensive rebounds just in the first half and there was a mountain the climb for the Jazz come the second half with the score 44-59 at the half.

Things were looking better in the third as the Jazz were forcing turnovers with the Pistons turning the ball over 3 times in the 3rd and the Jazz were taking advantage of this converting on the easy buckets but they were still giving up easy rebounds and second chance points. The 4th wasn't bad for bothe teams but the Jazz were still not able to slow down Stuckey but the Pistons weren't able to slow down the Jazz's inside game. They say that you learn from your mistakes maybe next time these teams meet the Jazz wont be so lackadaisical on D. There are so many things that the Jazz must learn for this game and if they want to make a deep play-off they will have to beat weaker opponents no matter how good they are at home but the off-season should be interesting for the Jazz and this was probably not how the Jazz wanted to end January.

Thomas Robinson named as All-Star Reserve in his rookie season

Charlotte Rookie Thomas Robinson has been popular amongst the fans as he has been named to the All-Star team in his first season and is also seen as the front runner for the Rookie of the Year award. Many Expected Anthony Davis as the stand out rookie this season but he shockingly was picked number 2 by the Wizards when many thought he was a clear choice for number 1 and he has somewhat underperformed for the Wizards this season and not as well as expected but it is all about Thomas Robinson who was picked at number 5 by the Bobcats and has had a terrific season so far averaging 16.6 points, 10.8 rebounds and 1.4 blocks in 32.9 minuets for the Bobcats. He had this to say:

"When I seen the team and the voting numbers I was shocked because there are so many players that deserve to be all-stars in the east but obviously I am honoured to be picked and I am looking forward to the opportunity and it will be a fun experience to go out there and play with some of the best players in the game today"

                      Green Headed to Chicago

CHICAGO -- In what has been a pretty quite season on the trade front this season (apart from the Bogut-Barg trade) maybe this trade will spark more buisness two weeks away from the deadline. The Celtics have sent Jeff Green to Chicago and they Will receive the Bulls 1st round pick this year and Kyle Korver. Green was unhappy with his lack of playing time with the Celtics this year stuck behind Kevin Garnett and Brandon Bass in the Celtics rotation but now that he goes to Chicago to team up with D-Rose it looks like he will play a Sixth Man Roll behind Carlos Boozer and he can also play the 3 behind Luol Deng who has had a mediocre season so far averaging just 10 points (but he is seeing a cut in minuets to just 28).

Heat Looking to become best ever

MIAMI -- The Miami Heat are looking to become statistically the best ever NBA team (some will agree not the best talent wise second to Jordan's Bulls)so far with a record of 46-5 about 2 weeks away from the All-star break. The feat they are trying to accomplish and reach is the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls featuring Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen and the defensive and rebounding force that was Dennis Rodman and many will not want this recored broken as they see that as a team that was just breathtaking, but the Heat fans will think otherwise and they see this as the team that can do it and do it in style. The 1995-96 Bulls had the best start to a season (41-3) and the Miami Heat are 46-5 right now and they know if they want to try and eclipse this huge milestone they have to avoid more slip ups.

                          Jazz blow-out foul troubled Hawks

ATLANTA -- Utah played on of their best games on the road this season against a Hawks team which gave away 42 free throws in the process with the Jazz getting 33 of their points fro the charity strip but that doesn't take anything away from the performance as 7 Jazz players finished in double digit scoring.

The game wasn't always as one sided as the final scoreline suggested in fact it was back and forth for the whole first half and it looked like the Jazz would struggle all night on the boards giving away to many offensive rebounds and second chance points. They did have trouble from Joe Johnson early on as he was carrying the Hawks for most of the first half with 16 points in the first half. No one could seem to get the upper hand and the Jazz were still struggling on the glass and had already given up 10 second chance points. the Hawks were ahead but a Jordan Taylor steal and layup would tie the game but the Hawks would outscore the Jazz by one point and the teams would go into the half 52-53.

Joe Johnson's scoring effort's weren't enough to stop the Hawks getting blown out

Al Jefferson had big 2nd half and he was part of the reason that the Jazz outscores the Hawks by 14 points in the 3rd quarter and the Jazz were up 21-8 in the third with 4:28 left, at that point Jefferson already had 19 second half points to his 4 first half points and with his efforts on the board he helped the Jazz overcome the rebounding deficit and finish with a double-double. In the 4th the Hawks foul trouble showed as Marvin Williams was fouled out on 4 points and it wasn't much different from the 3rd the Jazz continued to score relentlessly and in the final seconds of the game where most teams would dribble out for the buzzer with the Jazz up 17 Gerald Green would nail a 3 in transition to make the final winning margin 20 points.

Jazz shrug of Memphis despite The Rudy Gay Show

SALT LAKE CITY -- This was just the way that the Jazz wanted to close out before the All-star break but their were doubts as Rudy Gay just wouldn't stop scoring and bothering the Jazz and on the other hand Rudy Gay recently vented his frustrations at not getting an All-Star call-up and now his team fall yet again on the road.

The start to this game was fast and furious with both teams going at each others baskets and at each others throats and Al Jefferson was not having any of it blocking two straight Memphis shots and then showing his intensity after it punching the air repeatedly. Rudy Gay was just red hot tonight and never seemed to get cold and he seemed to be more alert than his whole team grabbing two of his 4 steals in the first quarter and dunking on almost every member of the Jazz. The Jazz have seemed to be struggling on the glass this season at times but this game they seemed to have dealt with this issue boxing out well and not letting the Grizzlies near the glass every time that the ball came off the rim. Going into the second quarter the Jazz kept their efficiency shooting wise going and Rudy Gay seemed to up his production even more and carried his Grizzlies through the quarter with some sort of help fro Zach Randolph and Marc Gasol but they were still outscored in the quarter by a Jazz team that were preforming well as a unit and not relying on one individual. Despite Gay having a outstanding first half the teams went in 44-51 at the half.

Rudy Gay was up to his usual tricks. This Ally-oop courtesy of Josh Selby was one of his many dunks.

Memphis improved as a team in the third and were much better defensively limiting the Jazz to 19 points and Rudy Gay was everywhere blocking shots, hitting jumpers and stealing the ball and going into the 4th it looked like the Grizzlies would maybe comeback. They were still good defensively in the 4th but the Jazz had found their offensive rhythm again and were scoring and the second unit was key in the quarter for the Jazz especially Derrick Favors who finished with 13 points of the bench and a block as well. Memphis did take the lead by a point but the Jazz scored a quick 2 afterwards, got a stop and when Alec Burks hit a transition 3 it seemed to rock the Grizzlies and they never seemed to have got their offensive game back on track as they were forcing shots in desperation and making some bad decisions with the ball and the Jazz were able to close the game out. Coach Karl had this to say about the Jazz performance:

I'm very happy with what I seen out there tonight and now hopefully we can continue this run after the All-Star break but now the guys can rest for three days and enjoy the All-star weekend and comeback refreshed and focused and continue the run when it means he most. We are sitting in the 7th seed but hopefully we can make the 6th by the time the end of the season comes about"

So after all-star weekend the Jazz will be heading to LA to face CP3 and Blake Griffin when they play the Clippers at Staples Center.
