Season 1 Recap

The Texas Southern Tigers began a new era last season as they brought in rookie head coach Logan Martinez, age 25, to lead the program. Martinez brought with him a fast-paced attack (though not at the pace of the UNC's or VMI's of the world) that emphasized rebounding and passing the ball, as evident in the assist numbers the Tigers racked up by seasons end.

The Tigers' program has never earned a birth to the NCAA Tournament in it's history, and Martinez's first goal that he set for the team was for them to get to 20 wins and make it to the Big Dance.

The season got off to a rough 2-5 start, including a 28-point debacle to Houston and a 30-point loss to Kentucky. Martinez found go-to players in the early stages of the season however, as Senior PF Travele Jones (15.8 PPG) and Freshman SG Lawrence Danner-Johnson (11 PPG) led the team in scoring, and it would continue that way for the rest of the year.

The biggest win of the year for the Tigers came on the road against Purdue. The Boilermakers had a lackluster season (15-19 final record), but the Tigers went toe-to-toe with stars Etwaun Moore and eventual First-Team All-American JaJuan Johnson and made some cluch shots down the stretch to earn the 77-74 win. This would give the Tigers a huge confidence boost as they entered conference play hovering around a .500 record.

The Tigers would go on to win 10 of 11 games in the Southwestern Athletic Conference at one point and they took command of the SWAC for much of the regular season. However, they hit a bump in the road down the stretch as they lost four of seven games, uncluding two to nemesis Mississippi Valley State. The Tigers finished with a 13-5 conference record, tied with Jackson State and MVST. MVST won the tie-breaker however and would clinch the SWAC's NIT berth.

The Tigers faced off with the Arkansas Pine-Bluff Golden Lions in the First Round of the SWAC tournament, a team they easily knocked off in both of their regular season meetings. However, the defense played horrible and was killed by the consistant driving ability of the Golden Lions' PG as he scored 24 points and notched 10 assists, leading his team to a 82-77 upset win over the Tigers.

Recruiting Recap

The Tigers suffered a bitter end to an otherwise stellar first season under Coach Martinez as the team finished 19-13. Martinez hauled in a very good first recruiting class for the Tigers as they finished #48 overall in the final rankings.

They brought in two *** big men to replace the two bigs who graduated. They also brought in a *** PG so SG Danner-Johnson can move to the two guard, his natural position. Also, the Lions nabbed a *** Juco SG to come off the bench as a sixth-man next year...

TEXAS SOUTHERN SEASON 2 PREVIEW

Coach Martinez begins his second year as head coach with much higher expectations from the local media. The Tigers came one win away from 20 last season in Martinez's first year on the job, and the fan base and local journalists are eagarly anticipating that illusive first NCAA Tournament birth this season.

The Tigers graduated three players from their starting lineup last year, including leading scorer and rebounder PF Travele Jones. Jones was really the only inside presense the Tigers had last season, as he consistanly battled in the paint despite being a bit undersized (6'9'').

This year, the Tigers will likely be a more guard oriented team, as second leading scorer Lawrence Danner-Johnson returns from a good, but sometimes inconsistant freshman campaign. The Shooting guard averaged 11 points and a little over 5 assists per games last season playing at the point guard spot, but he will move back to his natual position at the two-guard with freshman PG Austen Mitchell coming in. He was Mr. Basketball from the state of Alaska (ranked #314 overall). Mitchell is not much of a scorer, but is a solid passer and will likely average between 5-7 assists per game in Martinez's pass-oriented offense.

Small Forward Adrian Clayborn will return for his junior season after scoring a little over 8 points per game last season. Clayborn is a good mid-range shooter, is decent from behind the arc, and also makes the occassional block.

Power forward will be manned by Freshman New Zealand import PF Damien Allen, who is a sturdy 6'9'' 247. Martinez's offense revolves around bigs who can rebound and make effort plays, and Allen should fit that role nicely. At center will be Freshman (ranked #414 overall) Laurence Garza, who stands a massive 7'1'' 274. He is very similar in ability to Allen in that he doesn't have much of an offensive game, but he is a big body who can help control the boards underneath so the guards will have more shot opportunites.

Coach Martinez has stated that the goal for his team is to reach 20 wins this year, but it will be difficult as he scheduled some tough non-conference games this year for the young Tigers. Some of the noteable games include:

The Texas Southern Tigers looked to start the season on a good note as they took on the UT-Pan American Broncs. The Tigers won in comback fashion in their meeting last season on the Broncs' home floor, so revenge was on UTPA player's minds as they took the court.

The game got off to a sloppy start as the Tiger's freshmen big men could not hit anything inside. They bricked numerous shots in the paint and cause the offense to go into a funk for a period of the game. Luckily for the Tigers, SG Lawrence Danner-Johnson hit a few shots to give the offense some life.

The Tigers and Broncs would trade the lead numerous times down the stretch. The Tigers would hold a 68-67 advantage with less than 30 seconds left in the game and UTPA had the ball for the last shot. The Tigers defense held firm and force a contested jumper that clanked off the rim, then they grabbed the board and were able to run out the clock before the Broncs could get to 7 team fouls and force the Tigers to shoot free throws.

Austin, Texas - The Texas Southern Tigers (1-0) came into Austin Monday night with an upset on their mind. Coach Martinez has scheduled "bigger" Texas schools in his tenure thus far for his team to play, and there is no bigger program within Texas than the Longhorns (1-1).

The Longhorns returned a plethora of talent from last year's underachieving squad: Cory Joseph, Jordan Hamilton, Tristan Thompson, and sixth man J'Covan Brown. However, the Tigers would refuse to back down as they gave the Longhorns a much closer game than many originally anticipated.

A first half that saw both teams struggle to put the ball in the basket became a distant memory once the second half began. Texas Southern went into the break down 34-26 as they trailed early and never really got into a groove offensively.

The Tigers would turn up the full-court pressure in the second-half, grabbing a couple of steals before Texas could even make it passed half-court and converting those turnovers into easy layups. They also got to the free throw line much more often, sparked by the aggressive play of Lawrence Danner-Johnson. LDJ has always been more of a perimeter player, but in this one he drove the the basket on numerous occassions and drew fouls often as he finished 8-10 from the free throw line; he ended up with 24 points on the day.

However, unless the Tiger defense forced a turnover, the Longhorns would score at will as they kept nailing shot after shot. PG Cory Joseph and his backup PG J'Covan Brown combined for 31 points as they continously shredded the Tiger's perimeter defense.

The Tigers scored often in the second half, but the Longhorns matched them blow for blow and would steadily hold a 6-12 point lead for the rest of the game. Both teams scored a staggering 55 points in the second half. The Tigers were able to make it a little interesting at the end when they closed within four, but they were unable to make a three-pointer on their next possession. The Longhorns' Cory Joseph would make all of his free throws down the stretch, sealing the Texas victory.

Las Vegas, Nevada - After a steller effort in their previous game against the Texas Longhorns, the Texas Southern Tigers came into the contest with a lot of confidence. They would need it against a very talented UNLV squad, who brought in 3 Rivals' Five-Star recruits in their previous recruiting class: #14 overall Rylan Powlack (PF), #16 overall Curtis Crove (PG) and #20 overall Fred Dumbliauskas (SF).

The Tigers came out of the gates firing on all cylinders as they drilled shot after shot, contested and uncontested. The main scorer was SG Lawrence Danner-Johnson, who put on a ridiculous showing in the first half. He scored 21 points on 8-10 shooting, inlcuding 5-5 from beyond the arc.

The Tigers went on top 27-12 early, but the Runnin' Rebels stormed back with torrent shooting of their own. At the half, the Tigers went into the locker room up 55-47 after shooting 23-31 (6-6 from three, 3-3 from the foul line) while the Rebels shot 19-31 (7-10 from three, 3-3 from the charity stripe). Although the Rebels were down by 8 at the break, the crowd roared in approval as the teams left the court due to the exciting and fast play they witnessed.

The teams who showcase much better defense in the second half as both coaches changed up their defensive approach and encouraged slowing the pace down. The Rebels would eventually erase the deficit completely and take the lead, but the Tigers didn't let up and the teams traded baskets and defensive stops the rest of the night.

Finding themselves down 85-84 with 9 seconds left, the Tigers fouled UNLV SG Anthony Marshall and put him at the line. He tallied 20 points up to this point and was on fire the entire game. He made the first free throw, then missed the second one; the Tigers grabbed the board, ran to half-court and called timeout. The drew up a play to get the ball to SG Danner-Johnson, who caught the ball on the wing and put up a three point shot with 4 seconds left. However, SF Fred Dumbliasukas, one of the former Five-Star recruits, was right in his face and swatted the ball straight into the air, where he caught it as time expired. It was Danner-Johnson's only missed three-pointer of the night. UNLV escaped with a two-point victory, and once again the Tigers came up just short in an upset bid.

Orlando, Florida - It was over before the first timeout. After putting together two stellar efforts against more talented opponents in their previous two games, the Texas Southern Tigers fell flat on their face against the UCF Knights.

The Knights, led my Michigan State transfer C Tom Herzog and SF Tristan Spurlock, stormed out of the gate and never looked back as they took a 44-23 into the half on their way to a dominating win. The Knights tallied 29 fast-break points and their bench scored 39.

Meanwhile, the Tigers turned it over 21 times, shot 2-13 from the three point line, and only hit 11 of their 23 free throws.

Coach Martinez and his Texas Southern Tigers felt good about themselves after the team’s first three games of the season. They competed with the likes of Texas and UNLV until the final buzzer and had reasons to be optimistic about the rest of the season. That confidence was shattered in their last game versus UCF, as they were completely dismantled, forcing Martinez and his staff to return to the drawing board as they prepped the team for the upcoming Big Tree Tournament.

In the first game of the tournament, the Tigers got off to a quick start and took a 39-27 lead into the break as SG Lawrence Danner-Johnson and C Laurence Garza carried the team. However, a 17-4 run by the Vikings in the second half caused Tigers fans to sweat as they feared their team would drop a fourth straight game. However, two of the Tigers’ freshmen stepped up when it mattered most, as PG Austen Mitchell and PF Damian Allen hit some big shots (and late-game free throws) down the stretch as the Tigers held on to win.

In the second game of the Big Tree Tournament, the Tigers would face another Portland team, this time the Portland Pilots, who entered the tournament as heavy favorites after putting on some impressive early season performances. Little did they know they would run into a swarming buzzsaw as the Tigers shut down the Pilots’ attack from the very beginning.

The Tigers played suffocating defense throughout the contest, especially in the first half. They did not force many turnovers, but they held the Pilots to 6-32 shooting in the first half, including 1-11 from three. Portland did not make a field goal for a 6:39 period during the first half. The Tigers ended the first half on a 16-2 run and took a 34-17 lead into the break.

The Tigers’ defense was not as strong in the second half, but they still played well enough to cruise to an easy 20-point victory. The Tigers shared the ball extremely well throughout the contest as they tallied 23 assists on 27 field goals. 12 of those assists were by PG Austen Mitchell, who is starting to come into his own as an efficient pass-first point guard. The Tigers win the Big Tree Tournament while the Portland State Vikings take 3rd place after winning the consolation game.

Weeks of December 1-14, 2008

No games were on the schedule once again for the Tigers as they have an extensive break that stretches from their last game played on November 29^th all the way to their next contest at home against Denver on December 17^th.

The Tigers were not able to sign anyone during the early signing period. However, a couple of schools were able to nab some big-time players. Duke, UNC, Arkansas, and UNLV signed two or more Five-star recruits. Duke has already nabbed the #1 overall player in PF Sammy Burton, while also signing the #2 overall and #5 overall players as well.
