11/11/10
Chapel Hill, North Carolina
Although VCU came in with a much more experienced squad, UNC's talent was far superior. They have 3 sure-fire first round picks on their squad, including PG Vaidotas Stephenson. However, the youth of the Tar Heels seemed to hurt them in this one, especially in the first half.
UNC was able to jump out to a 23-13 lead, but VCU stormed back and took the momentum going into half time as they led 44-38. The Ram offense was scintillating, as Iker Pleiness and Darmetreis See continued their hot shooting from the last game and hit trey after trey. The Rams did most of their damage in transition, as the Tar Heels failed on multiple occasions to close out on the three-point line on the break.
That didn't last long as the Rams would find out to begin the second half.
The Heels played much tighter defense from the onset of the second stanza, locking down the perimeter and forcing the Rams to drive or throw the ball into the post.
Both offenses traded blow after blow as the half began to wind down. The Rams offense wasn't as efficient as it had been in the first, but they still managed to get timely buckets when they needed them. UNC did a lot of their damage outside of the paint, knocking down mid-range jumpshots with ease time after time.
With the score 78 all with less than 40 seconds left, VCU had the ball and Martinez called a timeout to set up a play. Denver Thomasson dribbled at mid court for 20....25 seconds to make sure VCU has the last shot. But UNC's Vaidotas Stephenson had other ideas. He swiftly stripped the ball out of Thomasson's hands and before he could turn around Stephenson was laying the ball up. 80-78 UNC with less than 10 seconds left. The Smith Center was going absolutely berserk - this highlight would be shown over and over again on Stephenson's pre-NBA Draft highlight tapes.
But VCU had one last chance. Knowing he needed a proven scorer in the clutch, Martinez subbed Rob Brandenburg into the game - he had already hit 3 threes up to this point. VCU was going for the win, not the tie.
Martinez drew up the same play he called in VCU's thrilling win over Xavier last year - but this time, Brandenburg would curl off a screen on the right wing behind the three-point line instead of the left.
The Rams executed it to perfection. Brandenburg came off the screen and found his sweet spot. He rose up with little interference with less than 3 seconds to go....
CLANG! Ka'Ron Floyd was able to grab the offensive rebound, but the clock expired before he could get a shot up. Game over. And VCU failed its first real test of the non-conference season.
