Re: Career Coaching Legacy of Logan Martinez (CH2K8)

    11/11/10
    Chapel Hill, North Carolina

The VCU Rams were able to rack up 28 wins last season and only suffered 6 defeats in large part because they really didn't play anybody in the non-conference. They lost to the only team they played that was ranked, and were easily defeated by the likes of Texas and Georgia Tech in the Paradise Jam. Their non-conference slate consisted of teams like Campbell and ECU. Not this year. Coach Martinez scheduled a much more challenging row of opponents this year. The first real challenged of the year was already here, as VCU traveled down Tobacco Road to take on the #17 Tar Heels.

Although VCU came in with a much more experienced squad, UNC's talent was far superior. They have 3 sure-fire first round picks on their squad, including PG Vaidotas Stephenson. However, the youth of the Tar Heels seemed to hurt them in this one, especially in the first half.

UNC was able to jump out to a 23-13 lead, but VCU stormed back and took the momentum going into half time as they led 44-38. The Ram offense was scintillating, as Iker Pleiness and Darmetreis See continued their hot shooting from the last game and hit trey after trey. The Rams did most of their damage in transition, as the Tar Heels failed on multiple occasions to close out on the three-point line on the break.

That didn't last long as the Rams would find out to begin the second half.

The Heels played much tighter defense from the onset of the second stanza, locking down the perimeter and forcing the Rams to drive or throw the ball into the post.

Both offenses traded blow after blow as the half began to wind down. The Rams offense wasn't as efficient as it had been in the first, but they still managed to get timely buckets when they needed them. UNC did a lot of their damage outside of the paint, knocking down mid-range jumpshots with ease time after time.

With the score 78 all with less than 40 seconds left, VCU had the ball and Martinez called a timeout to set up a play. Denver Thomasson dribbled at mid court for 20....25 seconds to make sure VCU has the last shot. But UNC's Vaidotas Stephenson had other ideas. He swiftly stripped the ball out of Thomasson's hands and before he could turn around Stephenson was laying the ball up. 80-78 UNC with less than 10 seconds left. The Smith Center was going absolutely berserk - this highlight would be shown over and over again on Stephenson's pre-NBA Draft highlight tapes.

But VCU had one last chance. Knowing he needed a proven scorer in the clutch, Martinez subbed Rob Brandenburg into the game - he had already hit 3 threes up to this point. VCU was going for the win, not the tie.

Martinez drew up the same play he called in VCU's thrilling win over Xavier last year - but this time, Brandenburg would curl off a screen on the right wing behind the three-point line instead of the left.

The Rams executed it to perfection. Brandenburg came off the screen and found his sweet spot. He rose up with little interference with less than 3 seconds to go....

CLANG! Ka'Ron Floyd was able to grab the offensive rebound, but the clock expired before he could get a shot up. Game over. And VCU failed its first real test of the non-conference season.

Man, that is such a tough loss to UNC. To come back from down in the half, to come back again, then to blow the chance at the last shot like that. Rough, although good for you for being able to go toe to toe with the big boys. I'd hardly call it a failed test.

Hopefully you can have a good bounce back against Texas A&M.

Teams can live by the three and they can die by the three.

The VCU Rams have never been a three-point shooting team with Coach Martinez at the helm. Last season, the Rams were shot a relatively high percentage from three (43%), but they didn't take many either, as they ranked among the bottom teams in the nation in attempts.

That philosophy has changed a bit this season. With Darmetreis See at the 3-spot, Iker Pleiness off to a near perfect start from the field, and sharp-shooting Rob Brandenburg off the bench, this VCU Ram squad can flat out rain it from beyond the arc.

Those threes were the difference in their contest against Texas A&M in the first round of the Old Spice Classic, as the Rams hit 10 of 18 threes while the Aggies were only able to hit 4 of their 18 attempts. Every last one of those threes were pivotal, as VCU escaped with a one-point win.

PG Denver Thomasson was fouled with the Rams up by one with less than 30 seconds to go, but he clanked the front end of the one and one. The Aggies had the ball last and patiently worked the clock, but VCU played tough throughout the possession, something that they haven't consistently done this season and managed to tip a ball out of bounds with less than one second to go. A&M was able to inbound it, but couldn't get a shot off in time and VCU advances thanks to the contributions of their three-point shooters as well as the steller play of Freshman C Ka'Ron Floyd, who had his best game of the season up to this point.

Considering time constraints with finals and whatnot approaching, my recaps are going to be much shorter - I just don't feel like writing a 30 minute writeup after playing a 45 minute game. Hope you all don't mind.

Known for their efficient offense and bend-but-don't-break defense under the Martinez regime, the VCU Rams all but dispelled both of those notions in the first half of their second round matchup against the Providence Friars.

The offense was ugly, but the defense was stifling. Friar SG Ricardo Ledo, sure-fire lottery pick should he declare for the NBA Draft, came into the game averaging over 30 points per game in his first two contests. Ram guard Iker Pleiness played suffocating defense, limiting Ledo's offensive touches and forcing tough shots. However, Pleiness' exertion on the defensive end came back to haunt his offensive game, as he was never able to get into rhythm for much of the contest. Still, the Rams were able to get balanced scoring scoring across the board in the first half and entered the break up 11.

The Ram defense appeared to have used all of their intensity in the first half, because the unit completely broke down in the second stanza. Pleiness could no longer stay in front of Ledo. Friar freshman C T. Al-Sayyad dominated the VCU bigs - he was clearly motivated by playing against fellow frosh C Ka'Ron Floyd because he dominated the glass and was fierce presence inside.

A sign that it just wasn't the Rams day happened when Ledo went up for a layup and was fouled - the ball wasn't anywhere close to the hoop (it would've just fallen out of bounds) but Pleiness, who was beat on the drive, came up from behind and attempted to block the shot after the whistle. He swatted the ball off the glass and into the basket, helping the Friars score and and-one. It was all down hill from there as Providence's defensive pressure on the perimeter simply smothered the Ram guards. Ledo was able to get free and scored with ease, which set up the rest of his teammates.

The VCU Rams were able to rebound Sunday afternoon after a terrible second half performance on Friday against Providence to beat the Rider Broncs. After scoring 23 points in the second half against the Friars, the Rams came out scorching, racking up a scintillating 51 first half points against Rider.

VCU freshman C Ka'Ron Floyd was the star of the game after essentially not showing up against Providence. He scored 20 points and racked up 12 rebounds while also blocking two shots. Given his youth, Martinez will have to be patient with Floyd this year because he has already shown the tendency to play outstanding for stretches while disappearing during others.

The Ram offense was nearly as effective in the second half - they looked as if they were going through the motions, but that can be expected given the large lead that was built up. PG Denver Thomasson had a good floor game, scoring 7 points and dishing out 11 assists.

Rider's offense could never get it going, as they shot 36% from the field and only hit 5/24 from beyond the arc. The defense did perform much better in the second half, but the outcome of the game was never truly in doubt.

VCU takes home third place in the Old Spice Classic and though the team is disappointed it didn't win the tournament, they can be encouraged by the fact that they were able to bounce back nicely after a tough loss in their last game.
