Re: Career Coaching Legacy of Logan Martinez (CH2K8)

    NCAA Tournament Round 1

    Howard C. Gentry Complex
    3/19/10

As soon as Logan Martinez saw "Xavier" flash across the screen on Selection Sunday in the 5-12 matchup with VCU Rams, he knew his team was in trouble.

The Muskeeteers would not have made the NCAA Tournament had they not gone on an outstanding run in the A-10 tournament, defeating four teams in four days, including two NCAA tournament teams in Charlotte and Saint Louis.

Xavier posseses one of the better offenses in the nation, led by SG Mark Lyons and excellent young talent in the frontcourt. In terms of sheer talent, this team was better than VCU. The only thing holding them back was a lack of experience and cohesion together as a unit. In the A-10 tournament, they seemed to find it.

VCU has been carried all season by their experience and balance, traits that helped them steamroll the CAA and finish with a 27-5 record.

In the first half of Friday's contest, VCU looked like the experienced team while Xavier seemed as if they were happy to be there. The Musketeers were content to let the Rams do whatever they wanted while VCU was on offense. It was a track meet all half, though the Rams were content with that play style as Martinez prefers his team to get up and down and score as much as possible as long as they get good shots. Against Xavier in the first half, every shot was a good shot.

The Rams took a 49-36 lead into halftime and were more than content to continue playing the same way going into the second. If Xavier wanted to quicken the pace and not play any defense, why would Martinez want to change anything?

Xavier, however, knew they had to go back to the drawing board. They still wanted to run; after all, that was how they won the A-10 tournament. Their offense thrives in transition, especially when Mark Lyons is on his game. But they started using more 1-3-1 zone as well as increasing pressure on the VCU ballhandlers in man-to-man.

    The plan worked beautifully.

Suddenly, an offense that could do whatever it wanted whenever it wanted was seeing their jumpshots clank off the rim. They began turning the ball over at a rate that they hadn't done all season. The increased pressure in turn helped Xavier's offensive game, as they got out, ran, scored easy buckets and got back on defense to get back in the faces of the VCU guards.

VCU was able to maintian their lead, however, despite getting sloppy on offense. At the 4 minute mark and after PG Denver Thomasson hit a pair of free throws, VCU was still up 75-67.

That's when the madness takes over.

Xavier would score quickly on a (PG) Carl Stepp layup. Then, Mark Lyons made an outstanding play on the defensive end, snagging the ball away, and taking the ball to the rack and drawing a foul. In a flash, VCU's lead dwindled to 75-72.

VCU guard Rob Brandenburg was able to draw a foul and hit a free throw to stop the bleeding a bit. Xavier junior PF Griffin McKenzie was stuffed by C D.J. Haley, but scrapped for the ball and was able to get the put-back basket. After another defensive stop, freshman Maceo Cruz (SF), who was a menace all game long, nailed a huge mid-range jumpshot as the shot clock was winding down to tie the game at 76 with 1:40 to go.

Again, VCU was unable to answer on the other end of the floor. This time, Mark Lyons made the Rams pay after Pleiness and Brandenburg had a communication breakdown on the perimeter and they left him wide open behind the arc. Nothin' but net.

VCU was against the ropes. They had blown their halftime lead and they had no momentum going for them. How would they respond?

Ram SG Iker Pleiness had the ball at the top of the key, he was winding up for his patented pump fake from just outside the three-point arc and...the ball was stolen from him by Maceo Cruz and he was was going up for a breakaway dunk before Pleiness even whipped his head around. 81-76 Musketeers with 1:07 to go.

The crowd was going absolutely bonkers. The sixth man was on the side of Xavier. Fans at NCAA tournament games always root for the underdog, and though this win wouldn't have been a huge surprise, they wanted to see the upstart Rams crumble. And in the second half of this game, that is exactly what they were doing.

On their next possession, however, the Rams were finally able to do something right. On a possession where Xavier was in their 1-3-1, VCU was able to get an open look for Rob Brandenburg and he took advantage of the opportunity. 81-79 Xavier.

This is when the Rams needed a stop. All season, this is when they got that stop. Instead, after some very good passing, McKenzie found a hole in the VCU defense and threw down an absolute thunderous dunk on the head D.J. Haley to make it 83-79 with 35 seconds to go.

VCU tried to get the ball to Brandenburg again, but this time he wasn't able to come through as he missed a contested three. McKenzie grabbed the rebound and was fouled immediately. He stepped up in the moment, making both free throws and extending the lead to 85-79 with 24 seconds left.

Xavier continued to use their full court press that had worked so well for them all half and double-teamed VCU PG Denver Thomasson as soon as he caught the ball. Before they could tie him up, however, he was able to whip a pass to halfcourt, where Rob Brandenburg caught it and pulled up for 3. Swish. 85-82 Xavier with 17 seconds to go.

The Rams were forced to foul Xavier's Steep on the inbounds play and he nailed both free throws. 87-82 Musketeers. VCU ran down the court, called a quick play for Brandenburg to curl around a screen on the right wing and once again drilled an absolutely ridiculous contested three to make it 87-85.

The pressure was all on Xavier now. How would Steep respond? Swish. First free throw hits nothing but net. But could he do it again? CLANK. The Rams were alive!

PG Denver Thomasson raced down court as he looked up and saw 9 seconds and counting steadily down. He raced to the left wing, then handed it off to Rob Brandenburg for one last three-point attempt to tie the game. The Musketeers sent numerous players to jump and try to get a hand in his face. They knew what was coming. Brandenburg for the tie as the clock counted down…4…3…2…SWISH. You gotta be kidding me.

88-88 with a mere 2 seconds left. Xavier was shell-shocked. They didn’t even complete the in-bounds pass as they threw it to half court where Ram guard Iker Pleiness intercepted it but didn’t get a shot off in time.

Overtime. The Rams were dead and buried. The Musketeers had pulled off the 12 over 5 upset. But alas, Rob Brandenburg, who buried 4 threes in less than a minute, including 3 in the final 17 seconds, had other plans. It looked as if the Rams had all the momentum and would take this game easily with overtime looming. But Xavier did not go down. They converted an and-one on their first offensive possession after four offensive rebounds. VCU could not score, and Xavier capitalized again to quickly go up 93-88.

Yet again the Rams fought back. They eventually tied the game up once more, then would take the lead with 44 seconds left on a D.J. Haley layup. Xavier would respond as McKenzie made a preposterous hook shot over the long arms of the 7’2’’ Haley to tie the game with 35 seconds left. VCU’s ball, and the outcome of the game was in their control.

They milked they clock till it was under 10 seconds, then Thomasson bounced the ball to Brandenburg as he came off a screen on the left wing for a mid-range pull up. Clank! Xavier’s Mark Lyons rebounded the ball, raced to halfcourt, and chucked an improbable halfcourt shot reminiscent of the Gordan Hayward half court heave against Duke a few years ago in the title game. It bounced off the glass and rim, as the crowd let out an exasperated “oooooh.” Double Overtime.

Martinez gave his front court players a rest to begin the period, and the bench players responded in a huge way. PF Heath Houston made a sweet layup of a pick and roll play, and PF Russell Skivolocke nailed a cluth mid-range jumpshot from just inside the three-point arc. Mark Lyons wasn’t about to let his team go down without a fight, though. He made another clutch jumper with his foot on the three-point line to tie it at 108 with 1:46 to go.

VCU would get the ball to D.J. Haley in the post on their next possession and he would be fouled on a layup attempt. Not known as a very good free throw shooter, Haley showed his clutch gene and hit both.

Xavier failed to score on their next possession, and VCU got the ball back with a chance to kill the clock. They missed their initial shot, but they were able to come up with the offensive rebound and SG Iker Pleiness was inexplicably fouled with 9 seconds left on the shot clock after it had reset. 21 seconds were left on the game clock. All Xavier had to do was wait and play defense and see if they could get a stop, but they made a huge mistake by reaching in.

Pleiness made the Musketeers pay by making both. Xavier responded quickly, however, and is able to score on an easy bucket in the paint. They then foul VCU’s Denver Thomasson, a 90% free throw shooter. Thomasson, who has been reliable in the clutch all season, clanks the first. With the pressure mounting and all eyes on him, he went up for his second attempt. Swoosh. 11.6 to go, VCU is up 113-110.

Xavier could either score quickly and play the foul game longer or go for the three and the tie. They went for the tie. The Musketeers put the ball in the hands of Mark Lyons (who else), to bail them out. He caught the ball and launched it with a silky smooth shooting stroke…2…1…CLANG.

VCU’s D.J. Haley came down with the rebound and was fouled with .7 seconds to go. He missed both free throws, but it didn’t matter as Xavier didn’t even have time to get a shot off. Game. Over. 113-110 final in double overtime. VCU advances to face the winner of the Saint Louis and UT-Martin matchup. Come tournament time, it truly is all about “survive and advance,” eh?

Holy double overtime. Well done keeping your **** together -- especially with Brandenburg at the end of regulation.

I couldn't believe what happened at the end of the game, honestly. It was total chaos. Brandenburg did his best Reggie Miller against the Knicks impression to help me win that one. When I was down 85-79, I thought I was done for sure.

          2010 NCAA Tournament Bracket

          East Region

          #1 Maryland 98 vs #16 Long Island 62
          #8 Saint Mary's 66 vs #9 Minnesota 69
          #5 Memphis 83 vs #12 UAB 71
          #4 Illinois State 62 vs #13 Utah 75
          #6 Colorado State 93 vs #11 San Francisco 73
          #3 Dayton 90 vs #14 Princeton 56
          #7 Ohio State 66 vs #10 Boston College 65
          #2 Arizona State 84 vs #15 Louisiana Tech 76

          Analysis:
A lot of chalk in this region. Relatively devoid of upsets and close games for the most part. #13 Utah, continuing its hot streak after winning the Mountain West Tournament, outscored Illinois State in the second half by 17 and won going away.

          West Region

          #1 Gonzaga 91 vs #16 Northern Arizona 44
          #8 Charlotte 49 vs #9 Providence 78
          #5 UConn 84 vs #12 Cal Poly 64
          #4 Louisville 83 vs #13 Troy 82
          #6 Wake Forest 50 vs #11 Toledo 69
          #3 Missouri 100 vs #14 Texas Southern 58
          #7 Washington 89 vs #10 Florida State 74
          #2 Kansas 81 vs #15 Binghamton 52

Analysis: Another region devoid of any real upsets. The only eye-raiser was Toledo handling ACC opponent Wake Forest the way they did. Martinez's former school, Texas Southern, was absolutely demolished by the Phil Pressey-led Tigers. Louisville, the defending champs, survived a major scare against Troy, but Peyton Siva and company wwere able to hold off the Trojans and win by 1.

          South Region

          #1 Georgetown 78 vs #16 Lafeyette 53
          #8 Arizona 87 vs #9 Fairfield 79
          #5 VCU 113 vs #12 Xavier 110
          #4 Saint Louis 106 vs #13 UT-Martin 68
          #6 Alabama 88 vs #11 South Carolina 78
          #3 Michigan State 84 vs #14 SC Upstate 64
          #7 Oregon State 57 vs #10 UNLV 67
          #2 Illinois 90 vs #15 Davidson 58

Analysis: Where are all the upsets?? Not a lot of madness going on in this tournament up to this point. VCU's win over the Xavier was by far the game of the tournament - the 12 seed was almost able to knock off Martinez's Rams. UNLV was the only "upset" in this region, and their talent coming in was far superiors to that of Oregon State anyway.

          Midwest Region

          #1 NC State 76 vs #16 Texas A&M Corpus Christi 61
          #8 San Diego 78 vs #9 Creighton 68
          #5 Oklahoma 83 vs #12 Drake 68
          #4 Florida 70 vs #13 Siena 60
          #6 Georgia Tech 68 vs #11 Detroit 82
          #3 Duke 83 vs #14 Oral Roberts 51
          #7 Tennessee 85 vs #10 New Mexico 65
          #2 Oregon 70 vs #15 High Point 64

Analysis: Oregon avoids the upset of the tournament and barely holds on to knock off High Point. Detroit, with NBA-quality players in Ray McCallum and Eli Holman, easily handle the Yellow Jackets in the only "upset" of this region.

Indeed. That was definitely one of the more fun (and stressful) games I've played for a long, long time. Probably one of the highest scoring ones too, though playing two overtimes certainly inflated the final numbers a bit.

                    NCAA Tournament Round 2

                    Howard C. Gentry Complex
                    3/21/10

Some NCAA Tournament games provide thrilling theater. Others, not so much. This was one of those games. At least, up to a certain point.

Two days after being a part of one of the most exciting NCAA Tournament games in recent memory, the VCU Rams found itself in the middle of one of the ugliest in their tilt with the Saint Louis Billikens.

VCU scored 88 points in regulation against Xavier, and ended up with 113 after completing the two overtime periods. They had 38 with 4:14 remaining in the second half in this game.

Saint Louis hadn't fared much better, racking up a whopping 44 points. To put it kindly, it was simply ugly basketball.

The Billikens came into the game with a concerted effort to slow the pace as much as possible and win with stifling defense. Rick Majerus has always been known as a coach that likes to make play ugly, and his philosophy worked to perfection against VCU.

Still, despite by far the worst offensive performance of the season, the Rams were still in it. Then again, a 6 point lead with 4 minutes left might as well have been a 20 point lead with 2 minutes left.

Leading scorer Iker Pleiness couldn't escape the smothering defensive pressure of Billiken SF Dwayne Evens and hadn't made a field goal all game. Rob Brandenbrug, the undisputed hero for VCU against Xavier, couldn't get open, hitting only one three all game up to that point. PG Denver Thomasson turned his ankle earlier in the game was turning the ball every time he did a dribble move. PF Javonte Reddic was bricking every conceivable shot in the paint. But they were only down 6. Coach Martinez knew they had one last run in them, if only they could see the ball go through the basket on one or two possessions.

C D.J. Haley was the only one who was effective at all for the Rams up to that point, and he would continue that trend. He made back-to-back baskets in the paint, one after scrapping for an offensive rebound, to pull the Rams within two. Saint Louis PF Rob Loe would respond, making a layup.

Then, Brandenburg finally got a clean look, drilling an open three to all of a sudden make it 46-45 with 3:21 to go. The Rams had scored 7 points in 53 seconds, something that seemed impossible only a few moments ago.

Then, the Rams took the lead. Javonte Reddic finally was able to convert on a look in the paint after VCU got a stop on defense. Ram lead.

But Loe made another huge play for the Billikens, responding with a basket under the hoop after two offensive rebounds. On the next possession, Iker Pleiness was finally able to see the ball go through the hoop. On a back door cut, he threw up a high-arcing floater that kissed off the glass over the long arms of Rob Loe. 49-48 VCU.

Again Loe stepped up for Saint Louis, nailing a baseline jumper. On the Rams next offensive possession, Rob Brandenburg was able to leak out behind a screen, but his man was still attached to his hip. No matter, he knew he had to take and make this shot, even with a hand almost attached to his forehead. Swish. 52-50 VCU with 1:10 to go.

Saint Louis would attack the basket on the next possession and draw a shooting foul, where they converted both free throws. Iker Pleiness had the ball in his hands on VCU's next possession, but couldn't convert on a great drive to the basket and miss the shot. Billiken C Cody Ellis, who had been relatively quiet all game, scored on a huge and-one on Saint Louis' next possession, but he ended up missing the free throw. 54-52 Billiken lead with 34.2 seconds to go.

On the next possession, Coach Martinez wanted to get another look for Brandenburg on the perimeter. The Rams wanted a three-pointer and win this game now inside of going into overtime. Instead, Iker Pleiness found the ball in his hands with a little over 12 seconds to go, knowing the team needed him to make a play.

And, as was the case for most of the game, Billiken SF Dwayne Evens got the better of him. Evens stripped the ball away from the VCU guard after a pump fake and the Rams were forced to foul. Luckily for VCU, Saint Louis was not in the double bonus.

Over the course of his career, Evens is a little over an 80% foul shooter. But, as they say, percentages don't matter during crunch time. Clank.

PG Denver Thomasson was given the ball and he streaked for the basket, knowing the Rams needed a score to either force overtime or a three to win it. Even on a sore and swollen sprained ankle, he made a fearless drive to the basket and made an outstanding scoop shot, showing aggression that hadn't been present for most of the game. 54-54 tie with 6.1 seconds left.

Thomasson lurked at the opposite three-point line to help pressure the Saint Louis ball-handler as soon as the ball was inbounded. Billiken PG Jordair Jett caught the ball, and was instantly met by Thomasson. The clock was ticking, and he could barely make it past half court. However, he looked up and saw Billiken PF Cody Ellis frantically waving his arms on the baseline as he had a bit of separation from Ram PF Javonte Reddic.

Jett whipped the pass from the space between half court and the three point line perfectly over the hands of Rob Brandenburg, who looked up just in time to see the ball wiz over his half-raised arms, and into the hands of Ellis on the baseline, 13 feet from the basket. Ellis turned to his left, saw the outstretched hands of Reddic coming straight towards him as the clock was below one second, and elevated for the potential game-winning shot.

                    0.5, 0.4, 0.3, 0.2, 0.1....

                    Swish. Nothing but nylon. Onions.

VCU had no time to attempt a catch and shoot. The game was over.

                      2010 NCAA Tournament Bracket
                      2nd Round

                      East Region

                      #1 Maryland 78 vs #9 Minnesota 55
                      #5 Memphis 74 vs #13 Utah 75
                      #3 Dayton 80 vs #6 Colorado State 74
#2 Arizona State 76 vs #7 Ohio State
                      65

Analysis: Utah pulls off the upset over #5 Memphis but the other schools hold serve. The Utes aren't the most talented squad but they rely on balance to get the job done and it's helped them reach the Sweet Sixteen.

                      West Region

                      #1 Gonzaga 88 vs #9 Providence 71
                      #4 Louisville 76 vs #5 UConn 72
                      #3 Missouri 79 vs #11 Toledo 89
                      #2 Kansas 106 vs #7 Washington 77

Analysis: MACtion! Toledo represents the MAC in a huge way as they stun Phil Pressey and the Tigers. Louisville, the defending champ, survives another game as they hold off a second-half run by the Huskies.

                      South Region

                      #1 Georgetown 92 vs #8 Arizona 73
                      #4 Saint Louis 56 vs #5 VCU 54
                      #3 Michigan State 73 vs #6 Alabama 79
                      #2 Illinois 93 vs #10 UNLV
                      72

Analysis: VCU has played in two of the more thrilling games of the tournament, so it certainly hurts to see them eliminated. Alabama only made 9 of 33 threes but it was enough to pull off the mini-upset.

                      Midwest Region

                      #1 NC State 90 vs #8 San Diego 56
                      #4 Florida 92 vs #5 Oklahoma 80

                      #3 Duke 82 vs #11 Detroit 58
                      #2 Oregon 68 vs #7 Tennessee 94

Analysis: The Tennessee score certainly stands out here. the #7 seed absolutely demolished #2 Oregon. The Ducks barely got by #15 High Point, so it appears they were vastly over-seeded to begin with.

                        2010 NCAA Tournament Bracket
                        Sweet Sixteen

                        East Region

                        #1 Maryland 69 vs#13 Utah 67
                        #2 Arizona State 64 vs #3 Dayton 60

Analysis: Utah nearly did it again. They came within two of stealing the victory from Maryland, but the Terps held on thanks to the play of star Sophomore PG Keena Lambert. Arizona State is headed to their third regional final in a row and will look to get to the Final Four for the third consecutive time after defeating Dayton

                        West Region

                        #1 Gonzaga 57 vs#4 Louisville 80
                        #2 Kansas 66 vs #11 Toledo 59

Analysis: Louisville absolutely curb stomps Gonzaga after barely getting by their first two opponents. They held the Zags to 15-51 shooting and dominated the second half. Kansas couldn't hit the broad side of a barn from the field or at the charity stripe, but they only committed 4 turnovers and forced 20 of them, which was the deciding factor in beating a pesty Toledo squad.

                        South Region

                        #1 Georgetown 78 vs#4 Saint Louis 79
                        #2 Illinois 95 vs #6 Alabama 80

Analysis: The Billikens did it again. Another one-point victory, this time against the #1 seeded Hoyas. Saint Louis got 40 points from their starting frontcourt, including 21 from C Cody Ellis who was the hero against VCU. Illinois continues scoring at a high rate in the tournament as D.J Richardson and Jeremy Richmond combined for 10 threes in the victory.

                        Midwest Region

                        #1 NC State 90 vs #4 Florida 77
                        #3 Duke 82
                        vs #7 Tennessee 77

Analysis: It's an all-ACC regional final as NC State and Duke took care of business. C.J. Leslie scored 26 points and hit an astounding six three-pointers. The Pack as a team hit 15 of their 29 three point shots. Duke was led by all-everything freshman PF Sammy Burton, who scored 21 points and grabbed 13 rebounds while blocking 4 shots in the win. The battle between he and Leslie in the regional final is going to be fun to watch.

                          Elite Eight

                          East Region

                          #1 Maryland 77 vs #2 Arizona State 63

Analysis: Keena. Lambert. The star guard again led the way for the Terps, scoring 19 points and grabbing 10 rebounds while hitting 4 three-pointers. Maryland hit 12 of their 25 attempts as a team and pulled away from the Sun Devils in the second half.

                          West Region

                          #2 Kansas 63 vs #4 Louisville 56

Analysis: Kansas loves to play ugly, and that methodology worked to perfection against Peyton Siva and the Cards. Louisville only made 18 of their 60 shot attempts, while Josh Selby, Thomas Robinson & company provided enough offensive production to advance to the Final Four.

                          South Region

                          #2 Illinois 71 vs #4 Saint Louis 68

Analysis: The Billikens' defense was able able to slow the Illini attack, but it wasn't enough. Saint Louis turned the ball over too much and PF Rob Loe didn't get much help on the offensive end. SF Jeremy Richmond torched Dwayne Evens, hitting 5 threes to help seal the win.

                          Midwest Region

                          #1 NC State 87 vs #3 Duke 74

Analysis: The Leslie-Burton matchup didn't quite live up the hype, as Burton found himself in foul trouble, but he still made the most of his minutes and scored 16 points. This was likely his last game, as he is a sure-fire top pick come draft time even though he's only a freshman. Leslie dropped in 20, and the Wolfpack's offense carried the day against their in-state rival.

                            Semi-Final #1

                            #1 Maryland 70 vs #2 Kansas 103

Analysis: Who says Kansas only wins ugly? The Jayhawks absolutely blitzed the Terps from the start, scoring 54 points in the first half en-route to a dominating win. The star of the game was sophomore SF Eduardo Darag, who dropped 30 points, grabbed 8 rebounds, and dished out 5 assists. He hit 4 of 6 three-pointers, and Kansas as a team hit 14 shots from beyond the arc.

                            Semi-Final #2

                            #1 NC State 74 vs #2 Illinois 83

Analysis: Jeremy Richmond can't be stopped. For the third consecutive game, the SF dropped 25 points as the Illini exploded for 53 first half points. they cooled substantially in the second half, but they held on and despite C.J. Leslie's best efforts, the Wolfpack weren't able to come back after finding themselves in a 19-point halftime hole.

                            NCAA Championship Game

                            #2 Kansas 69 vs #2 Illinois 63

Analysis: Kansas' stifling defense was simply too much. One of the tournament's best offensive teams was shut down, as the Illini committed 16 turnovers, and only shot 21-60 from the field in the loss. State SF Jeremy Richmond had 7 turnovers and only shot 4 for 19 from the field. PG Josh Selby led the way for the Jayhawks, scoring 25 points and hitting 5 three-pointers. Thomas Robinson also contributed 18 points and 7 rebounds in the win.

Congrats to the Kansas Jayhawks on winning the 2010 NCAA Championship!
