Re: Career Coaching Legacy of Logan Martinez (CH2K8)

    Denver (6-1)vs Texas Southern (3-3)

    December 17, 2008

Houston, Texas – The Texas Southern Tigers continued their defensive dominance from the Portland game into this contest as they wore down the Denver Pioneers en-route to a 21-point win. The Tigers offense sputtered for much of the game as they continuously missed open shots and east attempts in the paint, but their defense was suffocating and they never let the Pioneers get into rhythm.

The 21-point margin of victory is a bit deceiving because the Tigers were finally hitting some shots late, though they still only finished 27-67 from the field. However, they held Denver to 22-59 shooting, including 0-11 from beyond the arc. C Laurence Garza controlled the game in the paint as he scored 14, points, grabbed 13 boards, and blocked 3 shots. Lawrence Danner-Johnson led the team in scoring with 19 points, though he only shot 5-15 from the field.

The Tigers have now won 3 straight as they have another week off before they face the Houston Cougars, who completely dominated them in their matchup last season 90-57.

Re: Career Coaching Legacy of Logan Martinez (CH2K8)

      Texas Southern (4-3)vs Houston (5-4)

      December 27, 2008

Houston, Texas - The Houston Cougars were riding high. The previous day they knocked off #3 West Virginia by two points, where they proceeded to storm the court in jubilation. The very next day they would face a much lesser known opponent in the Texas Southern Tigers, who quietly won 3 games in a row entering the contest. In last years affair, Houston won 90-57 in an absolute debacle.

The Tigers came into this game with revenge on their mind. They played much harder and with an intensity not seen in last year's game. The game was a back and forth affair, as both teams played solid defense and made some difficult shots. The game was tied 30-30 at the half, and they would continue to trade the lead into the second half.

With 1 minute remaining, and the game tied at 60, Lawrence Danner-Johnson decided to take the game into his own hands. He drilled a three-pointer in the corner with 52.2 seconds to give the Tigers the 63-60 lead. Houston would proceed to make a basket, then force a turnover to get the ball back. However, they missed their shot and would foul to force the Tigers to the line.

PG Austen Mitchell would proceed to brick the free throw, but the Tigers nabbed the offensive rebound and SG Lawrence Danner-Johnson would head to the line. The often reliable shooter missed the front end as well, and Houston grabbed the rebound.

The Cougars would find an opening in the paint with 6.1 seconds left and score a layup to make it 64-63. Coach Martinez called timeout to set up the last play of the game:

PG Austen Mitchell would run to the three point line, where he passed it off to Lawrence Danner-Johnson. The shooting guard caught it, stepped up and drilled a jumper with .7 seconds left from the free throw line with Houston's PF directly in his face!! Onions!! The Tigers get the revenge they desperately sought on Houston's floor and now have won 4 in a row.

      Texas Southern 65 Houston 64

The Tigers win, led by Danner-Johnson's 24 points, 3 rebounds and 4 assists. Center Laurence Garza recorded 6 points, 10 rebounds, and 5 blocks while SG Micah Flowers came off the bench to record 11 key points. Houston was led in scoring by Freshman SF Shawn Jeffries, who scored 15.

The Tigers will face San Jose State (6-7) on the road in their next contest.

        Week of December 29 - January 4 2009

Texas Southern (5-3)vsSan Jose State (6-7)

        December 29, 2008

San Jose, California - The Texas Southern Tigers continued their defensive dominance they have displayed in recent games as they bottled up the San Jose Spartans Monday night. The Tigers could barely hit any shots of their own, but they scored enough to win the game.

It was a paltry first half on both sides as neither team could make a shot whether it was behind the arc, from mid-range, or directly under the hoop. There were more missed layups in the first half than baskets. The Tigers took a 23-12 lead into the break, holding the Spartans to 6-25 shooting. They would only shoot 11-30.

The second half was hardly much better, as the Tigers would hold the Spartans at arms length for the rest of the game. The 39-point output isn't even the worst performance by them this season as they scored 35 in a game against Texas A&M earlier in the year. The Spartans would finished the game shooting 17/56 from the field, while the Tigers shot 23/55.

Texas Southern 53 San Jose State 39

The Tigers were led by SG Lawrence Danner-Johnson who scored 14 points and 5 rebounds. C Laurence Garza continued his steady play with 12 points, 8 rebounds, and 2 blocks. PG Austen Mitchell only took 1 shot all game, but he managed the game well and racked up 10 assists.

Cal State Bakersfield (4-12)vs Texas Southern (6-3)

        January 2, 2009

Houston, Texas - The defensive intensity that the Texas Southern Tigers have brought in the past five games completely disintegrated in the first half Friday night as CSU Bakersfield lit up for to a tune of 36 points (21 of those points were from the bench) on 15 for 25 shooting. Luckily for the Tigers, they were making shots of their own as they took a 37-36 into the halftime break.

Coach Martinez reminded his team in the locker room what had led the Tigers to five straight wins in the first place. The Tigers' took his words to heart as the defense locked Bakersfield down in the second half, resulting in a comfortable victory.

Texas Southern 78 Cal State Bakersfield 56

The Tigers held Bakersfield to 6 for 28 shooting in the second half, and they only managed 2 points from the bench the rest of the game. CSU shot 21/53 in the game while the Tigers shot 31/67 while only committing two turnovers on the evening.

Five Tigers scored in double figures, led by C Laurence Garza who scored 14 points and grabbed 8 rebounds. Leading scorer SG Lawrence Danner-Johnson only scored 10 points on a dismal 5/18 shooting, including 0/7 from three. The Tigers will look to get their best player back on track next week as they begin conference play.

Re: Career Coaching Legacy of Logan Martinez (CH2K8)

At the halfway point of the conference season, the Texas Southern Tigers are holding steady and have posted a solid 13-6 overall record; 6-3 in the SWAC. After losing the first two games in conference to Grambling and Arkansas Pine-Bluff, they made a change in their starting line-up as they benched struggling freshman PF Damien Allen in favor of senior PF Keithtrick Denson. Denson has taken advantage of his new role as he’s averaged 10 ppg and 4 rpg and has helped facilitate the offense.

The Tigers reeled off 3 straight victories before being upset by the Southern Jaguars at home, who they had just beaten in the previous week. Texas Southern would rebound well from the loss however and have won 3 games in a row in convincing fashion. In recent contests, they have been sparked by sixth man SG Micah Flowers, who has averaged 12 ppg and is shooting 7/13 from three-point range in his last 3 games.

The juco sophomore’s play has been a lift for the team as SG Lawrence Danner-Johnson , the Tiger’s best player, is mired in a shooting slump that has last since the end of the non-conference season. He is still averaging 16.6 ppg, but his three-point percentage is down for better than 38% last year to 32% this year. Still, the Tigers have continued to win with him playing below average, and they look to continue their winnings ways as they enter the second half of SWAC play.

                Alcorn State (6-9)vsTexas Southern (13-6)
                February 5, 2009

Houston, Texas - Lawrence Danner-Johnson expressed before the game how disappointed he's been with his individual performance throughout conference play. There's a good chance he doesn't feel that way about tonight's game after the show he put on for the Texas Southern faithful.

Danner-Johnson scored the Tigers' first 11 points, 9 of which came from back-to-back-to-back three pointers on his way to 18 first half points. LDJ only scored 2 in the second half, but he also tallied 8 second half assists as the Texas Southern Tigers jumped out to a 22-point first half and cruised the rest of the way as the dominated the Alcorn State Braves throughout the contest.

Texas Southern 88 Alcorn State 62

Coach Martinez Minute: It certainly felt good to see LDJ break out of a bit of a shooting slump that's been bothering him for the past month or two. He hasn't hit the three-ball as much as he'd like to, but he shot lights out tonight, especially in the first half. The Braves' defensive focus turned to clamping down on him in the second half, but I thought he did a great job of becoming into a facilitator and creating scoring opportunities for others, as evident in his 8 second half assists. Overall, I thought we played very well tonight, especially on offense, and it felt good to win like this especially considering Alcorn State is 3rd in our conference at the moment.

                Quick Stats:

                Texas Southern
                FG: 38/65
                3PT: 7/13

                SG Micah Flowers - 14 pts, 6/8 FG, 2/2 3PT
PF Damien Allen - 14 pts, 2 rebs, 2 asts

                  Texas Southern (14-6)vsArkansas Pine-Bluff (10-13)
                  February 7, 2009

Pine Bluff, Arkansas - An undisputed place atop the conference standings was at stake tonight as the Texas Southern Tigers (7-3 in SWAC play) and the Arkansas Pine-Bluff Golden Lions (7-2 vs the SWAC) squared off. Arkansas Pine-Bluff won the last two contests vs the Tigers; a 65-64 victory in Houston earlier in conference play in this season, and a 82-77 win in the SWAC tournament last year that ended the Tigers' season.

This game certainly lived up to the hype as it was a back and forth affair throughout. In the team's previous meeting, SG Lawrence Danner-Johnson shot a poultry 4-16 from the field and was virtually a non-factor. Not so tonight. LDJ was an assassin on the floor as he rallied up points while shooting at an extremely efficient rate. However, he wasn't even the best player on the floor as PF/SF Lavoris Weathers played the game of his life, knocking down shots from all over the court despite not coming into the game with the reputation of a scorer. Coach Martinez was visibly frustrated on the sidelines as he watched the 6'8'' forward drill 3's from all over the place.

The teams traded blows into the half as they entered the locker room tied at 42. Both squads would continue scoring the basketball in the second half efficiently, though Texas Southern looked to have the advantage as they held a 69-62 point led with 5 minutes remaining. However, the Golden Lions would storm back and eventually take a 1-point lead. Lawrence Danner-Johnson would hit a clutch three with 59 seconds remaining to put the Tigers back on top 78-76. The Golden Lions would respond with a short jumper in the paint with 45 seconds left to tie the game.

Texas Southern would miss an outside shot with about 38 seconds left, but C Laurence Garza would grab a clutch offensive rebound and the Tigers reset to make sure they would get the last shot. Coach Martinez drew up a play for LDJ to get a three on the left wing and he would get the shot off, but, --who else-- Pine-Bluff's Lavoris Weathers came out of nowhere from his spot in the post and smacked the ball away as time expired, forcing the game into overtime.

The small crowd was in a frenzy heading into the extra period. They wouldn't be cheering for long however as the Tigers stormed out of the game and took the game by the throat. LDJ threw down a fast break dunk off of a steal, PG Austen Mitchell drilled a long 2-point jumper, and the Tigers ran away with the game and left Pine Bluff atop the SWAC standings.

                  Texas Southern 93
                  Arkansas Pine-Bluff 81
                  (Overtime)

Coach Martinez Minute: Couldn't be prouder of my guys tonight. Hell of a win. I think it's safe to say LDJ is 'off the schnide' because he was fantastic for the second straight game. I loved our play in the paint as well. We scored 56 down there while they only got 28. Also, hats off to Weathers of Pine-Bluff, because he was like a mini-LeBron James tonight. That dude was all over the court. Making shots, grabbing a few timely rebounds, dishing the rock, and even blocking our best shooter on the final play of regulation. Anyhow, great win for the guys and I'm happy to be on top of the SWAC! Hopefully we can keep that play as the season winds down.

Texas Southern (15-6)vs Alabama State (6-11)
                    February 9, 2009

Montgomery, Alabama - Texas Southern Head Coach Logan Martinez warned his team about a possible letdown coming off the big win over Arkansas Pine-Bluff two nights ago. He was right to feel that way as the Alabama State Hornets jumped out to a double-digit lead early as they could not miss in the first half. The Tigers found themselves down 47-32 at the half, at the Hornets shot over 60% in the first half.

The second half didn't begin much better as they Hornets stretched the lead to 21, as they lead 60-39 with a little over 10 minutes remaining. The Tigers finally kicked it into gear, as they began to force turnovers which led to quick baskets and transition threes. However, unless they forced a turnover, the Tigers could not get any stops as the Hornets continued to shoot the lights out.

The Tigers would close within a field goal or two several times during the final minute or two, but the game never really felt in doubt as the Hornets made timely shots when they needed to, and sunk their free throws when they were sent to the charity stripe.

Alabama State 92 Texas Southern 89

Coach Martinez Minute: I gotta say, this is one of the more disappointing losses in my tenure here. We simply did not show up on D at all, no matter what I tried to emphasize or what defense I called. Alabama State came to play tonight. We beat them pretty good (75-55) in Houston earlier in conference play, but they came out firing tonight and simply could not miss. It sucks because we've played pretty good defense all year, but we just didn't get it done tonight. I love the way Micah [Flowers] and LDJ have been shooting the ball lately though, and if we can muster up the defensive effort we are capable of doing, I think we'll be pretty good.

Texas Southern (15-7)vs Alcorn State (7-11)

                      February 13, 2009

Lorman, Mississippi - The Texas Southern Tigers felt as if they blew a chance to take control of the SWAC after losing in their last contest to Alabama State. They rebounded from that tough loss and obliterated the Alcorn State for the second time in 8 days Friday night.

The Tigers pounded the ball inside as they scored 60 points in the paint. They also out-rebounded the Braves 43-22, including 19 offensive rebounds compared to 5. The dominance inside helped the Tigers attempt 31 more shots than the Braves. The Tigers defense was stifling after being embarrassed by Alabama State, and really clamped down on the Braves and forced tough shots all night long.

Offensively, the Tigers were not extremely efficient, but the offensive rebounds and second change opportunities made up for some sloppy possessions.

Coach Martinez Minute: I was proud of the way the team came out tonight and dominated from the start after the tough loss on Monday. I was especially happy with the way C Laurence Garza came out and made his presence known in the paint considering he only grabbed 4 boards against Alabama State. Our inside play really carried us tonight and was the reason why we came out on top.

                          Alabama A&M (6-15)vs Texas Southern (16-7)
                          February 16, 2009

Houston, Texas - After handily beating Alabama A&M earlier in the year, The Texas Southern Tigers were expecting a closer contest in the second meeting. A&M has underachieved all season, as they were projected to win the SWAC considering their talent level.

This game was a slugfest as neither side could hit much from the outside (A&M was 1-19 from 3 and Texas Southern was 4-17) and were forced to score most of their points in the paint.

The Tigers would take a 40-28 lead into the half, but they could not hit the broad side of a barn in the second. Luckily for them, the defense came to play and got enough stops to hold on to the win, despite the offense at one point failing to score for a 7 minute stretch during the second half.

                          Texas Southern 64 Alabama A&M 54

Martinez Minute: We definitely didn't play our best game today, but I'm proud of the guys for gutting out the win despite our outside shots not falling. Danner-Johnson and (C Laurence) Garza helped score just enough for us to hold on to the win. I think our 37-26 rebounding advantage was the biggest factor in this game as we didn't allow them to get very many second shots after misses, which happened a lot for both sides tonight.

                          Stats:

Martinez Adds New Recruit to Target List

Coach Logan Martinez had 5 available scholarships to begin the year, and has put 3 of them to good use thus far. Though they have not signed a LOI, Seamus Burns has verbally committed to Texas Southern, while it is believed Trammell and Melvin are close to doing so as well.

Burns looks to be the star of the class, as the do-it-all forward from Houston, Texas, will give be instant contributor for his hometown team.

Martinez is now seriously pursuing Karim Freeman, a 6'9'' 235 pound Center from Mission Viejo, California. Freeman is ranked #238 according to Rivals.com and is the #15 Center prospect.

Martinez wants to add front-court depth to go alongside potential signee C Stan Melvin as Texas Southern loses 2 big men in the rotation (including starter Keithtrick Denson) to graduation this off-season.

Martinez wants to develop a recruiting pipeline to California to go alongside the talent in Texas to help the Tigers' program prosper in the future.

Coach Logan Martinez has won his first regular season conference championship! With one game remaining on the schedule, the Tigers have, at the very least, secured an NIT bid.

With a 13-4 record in SWAC play, Texas Southern sits comfortably atop the standings as the closest competitors (Arkansas Pine-Bluff (11-5), Alabama State (10-6) and Alcorn State (11-7) are officially eliminated from contention.

The Tigers last game of the season will be this Saturday on Senior Day vs Grambling. The Tigers will look to avenge an early season loss against a team that has a 2-1 record against Martinez since he took over the Texas Southern program.
