Yeah it is, but so far the off field stuff was mostly just to give reference to who everyone in the story is (or thought to be, and thats hypothetical not a spoiler).I intend to focus on basketball for the most part right now (I'm actually playing a game for the series as we speak), but later I will try to develop the characters more.

    Thanks for the feedback

Cold As Ice: The Tony Winter Story

      November 8th, 2012

      "0-3!" I shouted at her

"Calm down, Tony, the team is just taking a little while to gel is all, we'll turn it around, I'm sure of it." LeAnna said, trying to comfort me.

"WHEN? Tomorrow vs the defending champs? or maybe against another top team the clippers, or the talented but inconsistent Blazers? Even then we wind up 1-5 if we get going vs Portland, and 1-5 means I'll just end up a lousy scout again and I will have cost my friend his life as he knew it before he stepped on!"

"We can beat the Heat." She said.

"Really? Because I don't know if we can. We need to rush that Smith trade if we don't get going soon"

"Now, lets not be rash, and if your not gonna listen and just yell at me then I'm gonna let you go vent at someone else, I'm outta here!" She Stormed out of my office and I stood there, dumbfounded.

"Well, you two fight like a husband and a wife sometimes. And she's right you know." Mark said, finally deciding to step in.

"We DO NOT! Besides, what is she right about?"

"Everything. As women always are. We can beat the Heat, and,you weren't listening to reason, just venting about our rough start. Besides, its three games, we will win more. And the Smith remark was just idiotic, he has been a bright spot on our dull team, trading him right now would make matters worse."

"You're right about most of that, I am just mad and it was wrong of me to take it out on her, but you seriously think we can beat the heat?"

"Yes, and it won't even be close. The only reason they will even be within 30 points is because of a late game surge by Wade. LeBron is at the 4 in this game with battier outside, so we have a distinct advantage of having Josh Smith at the 4 right now, the only player built to stop LeBron. He will get Boards, but he won't get his usual point totals, throwing the team off, and with him tired from being bullied by josh smith his defense will suffer, and the rest of our team will take advantage. Bosh will be outdone by Horford, I'm sure of it. They can't win."

"Sounds like wishful thinking to me."

"You've always been a pessimist, Tony."

      "I know."

"Now, lets look at the Scouting Reports we got on those three 2 guards if you don't mind, Tony?"

"Sure, Who is the first one?"

"Victor Oladipo of Indiana, weighing in at 6 foot 5 inches and 214 pounds."

      "Which Scout looked at him?"

      "James Flory."

"Ok, what does it say?" I asked.

      "It said..."

Based on talent levels, I would say that Victor Oladipo of Indiana is about right in the middle of the pack as far as the available rookies in the upcoming rookie draft. If you are interested in determining the potential level of Victor, we should scout him at least a few more times for a solid evaluation.
"Ok, have you seen anything on this guy Mark?"

"Yeah, and I have to say he is a solid prospect, better than advertised here. good upside, solid all-around game, very good athlete."

"Is he worthy of a first round pick though?"

"Yeah, if we get him later in picks 20-30 maybe.

      "Ok, next prospect then."

"Archie Goodwin from Kentucky, 6'5" 195, Shaun Manning Scouted him."

"Good, he is probably our best scout other than you and I of course."

"Haha, right. So his report said..."

I returned from scouting Archie Goodwin of Kentucky late last night. He looks like he has been well coached throughout his life thus far as he has shown sound fundamentals out there on the court. He had some definite strengths, but I also learned he had some weaknesses; we might want to scout him further to learn more about these.
      "I like Goodwin" I said

"As do I, but I don't know if he will make it out of the lottery."

      "True."

      "And the last one"

"I saved the best for last, Tony. Tim Hardaway Jr. of Michigan, 6'6" 205"

      "Really? what did his say?"

      "Well..."

With our initial scouting trip done, I really think Tim Hardaway Jr. is a solid player who should contribute in the NBA right from the get go. We should invest some further scouting time to learn more about him.
"I've seen Hardaway on tape," Mark said," He is the best outside shooter in the class."

"We could always you a long wing who could shoot" I said.

"Yeah. and we would still have DeShawn Stevenson for defensive while he develops as a defender. and we could then trade Lou Williams."

"We should continue to look at all our options, but I want to look at this Hardaway kid again later."

Hawks Fly Past the Heavily Favored Heat 133-111

        By Michael Aviani

The Hawks finally seem to look like the playoff team we'd hoped for coming into the season. We were down early, but fought back in the second quarter and exploded with a 48 point 2nd quarter display, putting us up 14 going into halftime, and we never looked back, winning in impressive fashion vs the best team in basketball. 'Impressive' is not how anyone would describe the hawks first three performances, but this game shows what they are capable of. 6 hawks finished in double digits, and 4 players had 20+ points. led by there front-court tandem of J-Smoove (25 points, 10 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals, 2 blocks) and Al Horford (22 points, 12 rebounds, 5 assists) they dominated the heat inside and with their lack of front-court depth, LeBron and Bosh were exhausted by the 4th quarter.

        Jeff Drops Dimes
        images-2.jpeg
Jeff Teague had an outstanding performance, scoring 20 points off 8-13 shooting, grabbed 5 boards, and dished out a career-high 17 ASSISTS. Teague is playing like an all star early in the year averaging 19.3 ppg, 4.5 rpg, and 6.8 APG, and posting career highs in nearly every statistical category.

Will the Real Lou Williams Please Stand Up?
        images-1.jpeg
Lou Williams Has been a bit of a weak link in our three losses this season, but this game he exploded scoring 22 points of 8-13 shooting and 6-11 from downtown. Prior to that, however, he had averaged less than ten points per game. To add to that, he had gone 11-35 from the field and a paltry 2-13 from three. Let's say with cautious optimism that the Lou williams we saw vs Miami is the Real Lou Williams (I hope).

        J-Smoove The Shutdown Defender
        images-4.jpeg
Josh Smith has been playing like a perennial all-star so far and outplayed the best player on the planet last night. Part of that was due to his excellent defense on LeBron, holding him to just 18 points on 7-19 shooting, and forcing LeBron to turn the ball over 3 times. with at least 2 steal and 2 blocks in 2 games, including a game vs Kevin Durant where he had 5 steals and 3 blocks, he is looking like a 1st team all-defense-type player and could be in play for defensive player of the year.

Hopefully, this is the Hawks team we see more of this season.

Cold As Ice: The Tony Winter Story

          November 10th, 2012

"Wow. I did not see That coming."

"We did." Mark and LeAnna said in unison.

We were at my office the day after we upset the Heat in spectacular fashion.

"We are still 1-3, but were on the upswing."

"Yeah, we are," LeAnna said,"I hate to say I told you so, but, I really did so, I told you so."

"Funny LeAnna, what are you 12? Come on. Well Whatever I am glad we got the win, and I'm sort of upset that we're gonna lose Josh Smith by the deadline. We might as well get as much production as possible out of him though, so I think we should keep him until the deadline. Also, with the way Korver played last night, we should let him start over Dahntay Jones, at least, for now."

"I agree," Mark said "We should get as much out of Smith as we can, being that he is playing like a top 10 NBA player right now."

"If we're on the topic of future situations, what are we going to do with Jeff Teague, when should we begin negotiations?"

          "Whenever he is ready."

          "OK."

"Well, I think we are done here then, do either of you have anything else to say?"

          "No."

          "No."

          "Ok, you may go then."

          "Bye" They said.

          "Bye."

(I intend to stop doing plot parts until all-star weekend, I will post game and season updates, but I want to speed up the process, I feel we are to far behind for close to 20 posts. You will here from Tony again during All-Star weekend, and a lot will be revealed then, as well as the first 'poll' posts)

Hawks Show Some Mettle, Outlast Clips 131-124

            By Michael Aviani
The Hawks showed once again they are not to be underestimated, knocking of a talented but middling clippers team. It was a close game from the start, and neither team gained any momentum or control of the game. It was a back and forth barrage by both teams, led by there athletic big men, Blake griffin (29 points, 17 boards, 4 assists) for the clips and Josh Smith (30 points, 12 boards, 3 assists, 4 blocks) for our hawks. In the end, however, it was the Hawks who came out on top, with a more efficient offense, and taking better advantage of fast break opportunities, scoring 36 points on the break to the Clippers' 22. Another distinct advantage was the blocked shots by the Hawks, blocking 10 shots, and punishing opposing guards on the drive.

            The Unsung Heroes

This Section is about the guys who have been solid role players and even key contributors to our teams success, but generally get overshadowed by star players like Josh Smith, or talented young players like Jeff Teague. These 4 players stood out last night, either on offense or on D, they gave excellent performances from there perspective roles that helped push us past the Clippers. Our second units' outstanding play while our starters were tired as a huge reason for why we were able to outlast the clippers in a high scoring, high octane, down to the wire game.

            korver-pic.png
Kyle Korver has recently stepped into the starting lineup and is making the most of it, scoring in double digits 4 times in the since the Miami game. he had 13 points and six boards vs the clippers, is average 38% from 3, and averaging 94% from the charity stripe.156058004_b.jpg
Ivan Johnson has been a vital piece to our big man rotation this season, and while he is not as well known throughout the league, Hawks' Fans know that he is a valuable piece of the bench who can score in the post, and rebound very well. Against The clippers he was 5-5 from the field, scoring 10 points, and grabbed 4 rebounds in just 14 minutes of play.zaza-undergo-surgery.jpg
Zaza Pachulia generally just comes in to fill space and give Al Horford a much needed rest. When he showed up vs. the Clips, he showed up to play, and play well. He had to big blocks in 8 minutes of play. While he wasn't valuable on offense, he played exceptionally on defense in the low block.
            act_devin_harris.jpg
Devin Harris has played like a 6th man of the year candidate this season,in 19.8 minutes per game, he is averaging 10.7 ppg and 4.2 apg, 2.9 rpg, and 1.1 steals per game. All of this while averaging 47.7% from the field and an exceptional 50% from beyond the arc. Up against the deep back court of the clippers, he executed his game flawlessly, scoring 12 points on 5-8 shooting, 2-2 from downtown, and dishing out 9 assists in just 21 minutes of play.

Recapping Month 1 of the Hawks Season
              By Michael Aviani
              December 1st, 2012

It's been a wild month for the hawks, who have been humbled, beaten, and pounded on in some games, while in others, they thoroughly dominating top competition. The 2 biggest contrasting games we're being pounded on by the lowly Rockets in the season opener, then just 3 games later turning an 0-3 star into a dominant win vs. the defending champion Miami Heat. What should we make of this 5-9 team, that has shown flashes of talent, yet underachieved to start out the year? I will break them down here for you.

              The Good:
Josh Smith has played like an All-NBA type player, averaging 21.1 ppg over the month of November. He also is an imposing defensive presence and doing great at cleaning up the boards, averaging 2.1 blocks and 9.9 rebounds a game.
Don't discount what the team did against The Heat and Clippers, those we're more of what I would expect out of this team. Kyle Korver has played very well since making more frequent appearances in the starting lineup. The thing that will make or break this teams' season will be bench play. When the bench has played well, like in the Miami and Clipper games, the team has won, in the season opener vs. the Rockets, the bench played particularly poorly, and the team was thoroughly slaughtered. Look for the team, when the inevitable Josh Smith trade is made, to all of our dismay, to add a lot of depth options for this year or draft choices to fill those roles next year.

              The Bad:
Dahntay Jones has been less than stellar for the team and has been demoted in favor of Kyle Korver. More concerning though, is the ever-inconsistent Lou Williams. In games where he is efficient, where he is on, so to speak, we have generally played better. He shot us back in to the Miami game and led the charge in our 20 point victory. but when we played Houston, he was off, way off, and shot 3 of 17 from the field, resulting in an awful loss.

Projected record: 46-36 (fourth or fifth seed in the East)

What do we need to do to improve and get back to form? Continue to have strong bench play, get Lou Williams on track, and make sure we have a contingency plan for if and when Josh Smith is traded that is better than starting Ivan Johnson, who is best suited as a role player like he is currently, helping give us a strong bench.

Recapping December of the Hawks Season

                By Michael Aviani
                January 1st, 2013

Happy New Years Hawks' Fans, or, it would be, if our Hawks could get in gear and start performing like they should be, not 12-17. We should be like 16-13 right now, but we blew games vs Cleveland, and Washington, TWICE, and not coming out on the right end of a close game vs. Chicago. I'm beginning to question the management of interim GM Tony Winter. unfortunately, he has received high praise from the owners and will likely receive the full job in the next few weeks, according to Jalen Rose of The NBA on ESPN:
"According to My sources, Atlanta Hawks ownership will likely keep Tony Winter on board as the full time GM, and they could agree to terms in the next few weeks."
                -Jalen Rose, NBA on ESPN
With that said, I believe it is possible that there are issues beyond what we can see on the court as to why the team has struggled. It has been well documented that Josh Smith wants out of Atlanta, and perhaps tension in the locker room caused by this has been affecting the players on the court. If Winter wants to make an impression that he deserves the job, he needs to get rid of Smith if he thinks Smith is a detriment to the team's chemistry.

                The Good:
Jeff Teague has been a consistent point guard, averaging 15 points and 5 dimes a game. He said a press conference that he thinks he can improve more, and even be one of the best point guards in the NBA. He is only 24, so there's certainly time for him to develop here if we re-sign him. In fact, our entire back court has improved since last month, Lou Williams has found his groove, Devin Harris gives us a nice depth option in our second unit, and DeShawn Stevenson Gives us a solid role player who we can sub in and let him play great, tough, gritty defense on the best players in the league. Al Horford is playing like a top 5 Center in the league, averaging 17.2 PPG (16.5 in December) 10.8 RPG (10.7 in December) 2.9 APG (2.9 in December) and 1.4 blocks a game (1.5 in December). I would say he is likely to be an all-star, but it will be a close race.

                The Bad:
Let's face facts, Josh Smith WILL be traded, and that could hurt the team if we don't get a good return on him. The bad is, obviously, that we can't string together victories. Its that simple, We haven't played quite good enough, we have been close in some games, but fallen short in a few areas that just seem to be holding us back. Its not our offense, we are second in the league in team PPG, with 106.3. Our biggest lack is defensively, we give up by far the most PPG to opposing teams, with 111.6. That leaves us with a point differential of -5.3, 4th worst in the league. We also struggle to make free throws with consistency. we are 4th worst in the league in that department with a paltry 72.6% free throw percentage. we also foul and turn the ball over too often.

Projected Record: 39-43 (miss the playoffs)

Unless we can fix the Defensive play and other listed negatives, it won't matter how great an offensive team we are, we will be on the outside looking in come playoff time. I think maybe getting some better defenders in the Josh Smith deal and playing DeShawn Stevenson more would help towards that goal, but the entire mindset towards defense needs to change, and that could require a coaching change... You never know. (By the way, if you didn't know, I'm following the twitter page @FireLarryDrew, if your interested).

Cold As Ice: The Tony Winter Story
                  February 1st 2013

                  "Tony" LeAnna Said.

                  "Yes?"

"Bruce wants to speak to you."

                  "About What?"

                  "I wasn't told."

                  "Ok, I'll be right back."

                  "Ok."

I walked out of my office, and up to the Penthouse, what we call the top floor that was all one office belonging to Bruce, where he was waiting.

"Sit down Tony, I've been expecting you."

"I know, Bruce." I said grimly.

"Why so serious? I have excellent news for you."

So I'm not getting replaced, I thought. "Really, what is it?"

"We here in charge of the Hawks organization are proud to say we feel comfortable with you as the head of our team, we want you to be the full time GM for the Atlanta Hawks."

"I'm so excited to get this once in a lifetime opportunity," I said, trying to keep my composure,"You will not regret this decision."

"I know I won't Tony. There a few things we need to discuss, however, before we can finalize the deal."

                  "Like what?"

"We feel the team has underachieved this year, and while that is to no fault of your managerial skills, we want to know how you intend to fix this team."

"Can you elaborate on that statement?" I asked

"There have been cries for a change recently, specifically targeted at Head Coach Larry Drew, who do you thing is to blame for the rough patches we've hit throughout the season, and how do you suppose we handle them."

"I think there are a lot of potential causes for our sluggish first half of the season." I began. "One of which is possibly the fact that Larry Drew may not be the answer at the head coaching position, but I don't think now is the time to start over with a brand new system, that would only make matters worse. I say we wait it out with Drew and see who is available next offseason for the Head coaching job, but there is merit to those cries, and I don't think his offense first mentality is good for the team, so I would look into that option if push comes to shove. I really think another issue has been inconsistency from our wing players. Lou Williams has displayed the ability to produce points in a hurry when he is hitting his stride, but he is a streaky shooter, and when he has been on a cold streak, he has shot us out of some games. and Kyle Korver has been solid but unspectacular most games with a few good effort here and there, but isn't a starting caliber Small Forward in the NBA, he has his niche, as a scorer off the bench, but we need someone who we can rely on on the wing consistently to play well. while I'm not saying we need a superstar, a guy who can be a solid option put there if need be would be a huge plus. I also think there has been a lack of chemistry in the locker room, being that Josh smith and a few other players are unhappy, and it is affecting our on court play. I think trading Smith will solve a lot of the problems we face, but not all of them. I am thinking after the trade deadline, once all the moves have been made, I may hold some type of get together for the players to boost team chemistry. This, in combination with Smith leaving, should handle chemistry issues at least partially. The rest will come with time. The Smith trade should also help improve our defense and result in getting a more consistent wing player, if I play my cards right."

"I agree with most of what you said. although I don't see trading our star player as helping unless he is truly being a pain off the court to the team. What do you mean by 'if you player cards right'?"

"It will help, and I mean if I can get the right buyer which shouldn't be hard, being that Smith's trade value will peak right after the all-star break. That right buyer will be one who wants Smith's talents, and is willing to sacrifice a lot to get him. By a lot I mean A big man, a wing, and a first round pick. A few teams have already expressed interest, but I can't really say more because I won't know until a few days before the deadline."

"OK. Now that I know you have a clear vision for where the team is headed, I think we should have our attorneys meat to discuss contract negotiations on Monday."

"OK, that sounds good to me. thank you for everything Bruce."

                  "Your welcome."

I wonder what comes next, I thought. I walked back to my office with a huge smile on my face.

"I see it went well." LeAnna said

"Yeah, I got named full-time GM for the team"

                  "Great for you."

"Yeah. I have 2 questions, one basketball related and one non-basketball."

                  "Shoot."

"Well the basketball one is what do you make the the Head Coaches in the market right now?"

"I can look into it, but I dont know Tony."

"That's ok, but tell Mark to look into it, and tell him the good news."

"Ok, no problem, and the other one?"

"I was wondering," gulp,"If you were interested in joining me for dinner tonight or tomorrow night to celebrate my hiring?"

"Sure, I guess," she and I both blushed like middle schoolers who just got there first crush, "Sounds fun. I can do tonight, or tomorrow night, whatever is easier."

"There's this fancy italian place, Cucina Italiana de Eżio, meaning Ezio's Italian Cuisine I think, and I can get us a a reservation tonight."

                  "Sounds good."

"I'll Pick you up at 8?"

                  "Sounds like a date."

YESSSSS! I thought,"Ok see you at 8. you can take the rest of the day off if you want too."

                  "Thanks. See you at 8."

She walked out. I fist pumped once she was gone, then turned to look out my window out to the expanse of Atlanta, I saw the Arena, The GeorgiaDome, I saw It all, and I thought to myself, God I love this city, this is a great day.

Like what I'm seeing here. The Hawks are having it rough but it's always nice to have a rough first season to build upon. One thing though, Adam Schefter doesn't report NBA. He does NFL. If you want ESPN NBA Insider go with Chris Broussard (joke that he is).

Other than that, looking forward to seeing how Tony revives he Hawks.
                      Any comments are welcome.

Thanks. And I knew that Schefter didn't report on the NBA, but, I couldnt think of any nba reporters i didnt hate. I changed it to Jalen Rose because he isnt a COMPLETE dufus like chris broussard or skip bayless.

Yeah I know, I'm not very good at typing. But I am usually very good about it when talking or handwriting. I hate making typos too. The first poll could be coming soon too. Stay tuned, My homework load is light because we have standardized testing this week, so I should get some more content out this this whole week as a result. which is always a plus, for readers and for me because I find this fun to do.

Thanks, I follow your Chasing Dreams Series and I have really enjoyed it, so to hear praise from you (and Trekfan too, I read Andy McCutcheon and Ronnie Gold) is really fulfilling because your series's inspired me to do this and your writing styles have sort have helped shape a lot of the series plot-lines. I think everyone will enjoy my next edition of Cold As Ice, So stay tuned, as you will see another side to one of the main characters, and I guest appearance, but I can't say more.I'm really glad this series has received the following and positive feed back it has. I enjoy doing it, and the positivity I have been getting back from you guys makes is even more fun for me.
