HC: Casey, Dunlap, or Hollins. I think Casey is getting a bad rap in Toronto, the roster there is not designed for his strengths. Dunlap is a personal favorite of mine, feel he's gonna be a good coach but he may need another team or two to be seen as such. Hollins is a quality guy who knows how to operate in a small market in a city that's not basketball crazy.

AC: Silas, Bickerstaff, or Malone. I like Silas, personally, but only because the dude looks he actually likes his job (some of the assistants look you like you just shot their favorite dog).

The game's coaching hiring/firing system is broken anyway ... I honestly don't know how much difference it makes. Best of luck with the hire.
    Any comments are welcome.

I agree with you on Casey, and I too like Dunlap, and Hollins is the easy choice because we see what hes been capable of in Memphis, but I don't know how he fits with the team, other than teague, and maybe horford, the roster would need to be re-tooled to fit his system (and I say that for storyline, I dont think it actually matters what coach it is for gameplay). Casey I believe is one of three or 4 with a B in defense the rest are C rated or lower, and those being Monty Williams, Lionel Hollins, Casey, and a couple others, I'm not looking at the list right now. I personally like Lionel Hollins for the head coach as he knows what he's doing and like trekfan said he can operate a small market. I still think he doesn't get the credit he deserves.

I'm not to familiar with assistants but Kevin Eastman has worked in Boston for a while and working on a franchise like Boston can only bring good things knowledge wise as he's worked with one of the best in Doc Rivers.

I have made up my mind with Head Coach, but now I'm looking for the asst. to pair with him. The head coach is a Gregg Popovich Disciple, and is a young coach. I am looking for a veteran AC, who is an X's and O's guy with experience, and is defensive minded as well. Expect a major re-tool of the roster and offense with this coach. Any recommendations for the asst.? and if you know who the head coach is don't spoil it for those who don't.

It will be fun, but I need an AC first, any ideas? remember, Xs and Os, experienced, defensive minded is the criteria

Cold As Ice: The Tony Winter Story

"Tony," LeAnna began,"Another coaching candidate is here, Jacque Vaughn."

"Send him in." I said with indifference. I have had 4 interviews with candidates already, and not one of them have impressed, so my hopes weren't up for this one. I had already seen Monty Williams, Terry Stotts, Dwane Casey, and PJ Carlesimo, none if which won me over, and they have been eliminated from the coaches on our list.

                  "Hello Mr. Winter,"

"Hello, Jacque, you can call me Tony."

"Nice to finally meet you, Tony."

                  "Nice to meet you too."

"Well, Tony, I am very excited about the opportunity you have given me, a second chance after being fired by the Magic, where I feel I didn't really get a fair shake."

"I agree, and I would have loved to see what you could have done with that young squad. Its an interesting team, that with a good draft could make some noise next season. Now, lets begin."

                  "OK"

"Well, I would like to get a feel for how you want the team to look. What type of system, and players that go with it, are you looking for?"

"I am looking to run a motion offense that consists of a lot of off-ball screening and drive-and-kick scenarios. The type of players I would be looking for is an athletic ball-distributor with some range from three at the point, like Mike Conley or Your Current point guard Jeff Teague. At the 2-guard I am looking for a defensive-minded wing with length and athleticism, who could also shoot the three, which will be an important trait for all my outside players is there shot, a good example of this would be Jared Dudley or Thabo Sefolosha. at the three, I am basically looking for the same thing I was looking for at the 2, except more athletic, and I am willing to sacrifice defensive ability there or at the 2 as long as one of them is a solid defender, if Butler can develop his shot more than he would work, and same goes for Moe Harkless who I had in Orlando. at power forward I am looking for a stretch 4 who can create good spacing offensively by taking another big out of the paint and creating more lanes, Andrea Barngiani, Pau Gasol, and Rashard Lewis in his prime would be good examples. The center positiong is the focus of the offense, and everything is run through him, I need a 5-tool type player, who can score in the low block, make plays for his teammates from the post, rebound, and be a defensive nightmare inside. Dwight Howard personifies this, as does Marc Gasol, and Greg Monroe, DeAndre Jordan, DeMarcus Cousins, and Brook Lopez could all become this type of player of they develop properly. I'd like to get a deep rotation with specialists at certain things, such as shooting, rebounding, or defense. My scheme is adaptable, though, I can tweak it until the roster is at the point where I am comfortable with it."

                  "And defensively?"

"I tend to look to have great outside defender and not give up open shots. I said in a press conference one time that I don't care if we get zero steals, as long as we are playing excellent perimeter Defense and not giving up open shots. Inside I like to have a dominant Big to patrol the paint, and another big who can do a little of both, play in the post vs. bigger teams and play on the perimeter vs. smaller teams. Chris Bosh and Kevin Garnett are guys who do this on a game in game out basis, but from center, and Dirk is the best example at the 4 position. I tend to not play to much help defense because I want my players to take pride in there defensive abilities and I want to eliminate my players having to move to much and close out on shooters. "

"OK, well, those are good answers, and I like that you have direction, but are willing and able to be flexible in the transition period, which could help make that period easier to deal with. If you were to build the team out of just rookies from this years draft, how would you build it?" I ask this question, being a former scout, to see how they do as a talent evaluator, to see how much they know about these draftees specifically, and to see how clear of a vision they have for the team.

"Well, I would probably want a guy like Trey Burke at the point, he is a good point guard who can penetrate, pass out of the drive, and hit a three when asked. at the two, I would probably want either Archie Goodwin or Tim Hardaway Jr. but I would be sacrificing one or two things with both. With Goodwin it is polished defensive skills and the shooting, but he makes up for it with tremendous potential and athleticism that he can use to get by as he develops on defense. With Hardaway its the perimeter defense, and the fact that he has a lower ceiling than Goodwin. I will go with Goodwin for all intensive purposes though. at the three I would want Otto Porter, who is an excellent perimeter defender, and a do-it-all type guy on offense. At the 4 I would want a guy who can spread the floor like Isaiah Austin of Baylor, who could develop into the next Dirk Nowitzki of worked with properly. The center position is a tough call, as there are two guys who are half-way to what I need them to be, and have extremely high potential. Gorgui Dieng, and Nerlens Noel. Noel is obviously better right now, and is a slightly better athlete. Both are excellent rebounders and post defenders, but both are limited offensively. I would take Noel because he is ready to be a star right now, whereas Dieng may need more time, and may end up stuck in DeAndre Jordan Territory for longer than I would like."

"Thats a good lineup there. You have really impressed me coach."

                  "thank you."

The interview continued, and the longer I talked to the guy, the more I wanted to have him be the coach.

"Well, you have done outstanding, and I would like to say your chances of getting the job are very high."

                  "Thank you."

"I will alert you when we make a decision. It was great talking to you. Goodbye."

                  "Goodbye Tony."

[no, this doesn't neccesarily mean I have hired him or not, I will post more interviews tonight as well, I will narrow it down to three.]

Cold As Ice: The Tony Winter Story

                    "Another Candidate." LeAnna said.

"Send him in." I said with more positivity this time. I was optimistic today, after ending yesterday on a high note with Jacque Vaughn. "Who is it?"

                    "Lionel Hollins."

                    "OK"

I thought Hollins was a proven guy, and is an underrated coach. I like what he did with Memphis. He had a bad year last season, so he got put on the chopping block by Memphis. He knows how to operate in a small market, which is important, being that Atlanta is no Manhattan, and the Hawks aren't the most popular team in the city with the Falcons in town. He would give the team a steady, veteran voice for the team, but how far he can take a team, that remains to be seen, and how he will interview will be a big deal.

                    "Hello, Mr. Winter, is it?"

"Yes, Hello, coach, and you can call me Tony."

                    "Ok"

"I understand what you bring to the table from your tenure with the Grizzlies, which ended abruptly due to a disappointing season. What happened?"

"I feel that we didn't execute, and that I struggled to adapt last season. It was a learning experience, as most seasons I've had I have lived up to expectations. I think that I can lead your team, as the team already fits my scheme pretty well. I take responsibility for the season the Grizz had, and am ready to move on."

"OK. Next question. I am expecting a lot of roster turnover with all the expiring contracts we have, how do you want to take advantage of the open roster and cap space? What type of team do you want to build?"

"Well, I think that with the open space we could take advantage of the options available in free agency. I feel that Lou Williams would not be my answer at shooting guard. I would like to go after a player like Andre Iguodala at the 2, and pair him with Jimmy Butler at the 3. then, I would likely amnesty Boozer, and sign a younger power forward, maybe Paul Millsap in a sign-and trade for Taj Gibson, who I like as a player. The other option with amnestying Boozer is we can sign Pekovic, Cousins, or if we are lucky D12, and then move Horford to the 4. That way we would have an intimidating front court that would dominate most Eastern Conference bigs, which are typically smaller. I'm fine with Teague at point. To sure ip the bench I would bring back Korver, draft a center and a shooting guard, and sign another backup power forward. if we can retain harris, great, if not, not, and we sign another point to back up Teague, who will be retained."

"Ok, good answer. If you could make a team of players who perfectly fit your scheme, what would it be and why?"

"The system I run now is so refined, so precise in its mission, that the personnel is almost secondary to its overarching principles. If I were to get my choice of any players in the NBA though, I would build around Marc Gasol, he is in my opinion the best center for my system in the NBA. At power Forward, I would want a guy who can bang down low with the best of them, a player like Zach Randoph, sorry for the Memphis bias, but that team has been solid, or maybe Carlos Boozer, at the wing position, I would probably want Kawhi Leonard and Andre Iguodala, at the point Derrick Rose. My bench would have a stretch four like Andrea Bargiani, a third down-low big like Kosta Koufos, my sixth man would be a scoring wing like Jamal Crawford, a point who can distibute to my second unit and play solid D, like Ramon Sessions, and Steve Novak and a shot creator like to round out my bench, maybe John Jenkins who is already on your roster."

                    "Sounds good."

We continued the interview, and I also liked what I heard from Hollins. It will be interesting, This coaching race is gonna be close.

Cold As Ice: The Tony Winter Story

"Mr. Winter, Im glad to meet you."

"As am I, call me Tony, Coach Dunlap."

                      "OK."

                      "Well, lets begin."

                      "OK."

"I want to know how you want to operate as a head coach, being that you have little experience in the position, what type of role would you play as a member of the team, and what type of team are you looking for?"

"I want to be a coach who is good at developing young, talented players, and can teach the fundamentals. I want to be very hands on with the players and as a coach. The assistant would be the one to handle the business side of things more and the X's and O's."

"Ok, well, on the topic of X's and O's, what system do you want to feature here in Atlanta?"

"One focused on played good defense and then getting the rebound, and making the outlet pass to get into transition and get easy points on the break."

"Could you elaborate on that? Go through it position by position what you are looking for with each player."

"Well, from the point guard spot, I am looking for a guy who is an athletic, pass first point guard, like Jeff Teague, Mike Conley, or Brandon Jennings. At the two I am looking for a versatile scorer who can play all three backcourt positions, like James Harden or Tyreke Evans. at the three I like to have a solid perimeter defender like Kawhi Leonard, Moe Harkless, or Michael Kidd-Gilchrist. The four should be a long guy who can play from the high block, like Dirk, Pau, or KG. At the five I want a guy who can play from down low and is solid in all areas, like Al Horford or Al Jefferson."

"Hmm, interesting. Next question, This offseason is expected to be one with some turnover, how will you handle the mix of new players, and how will you help them gel?"

"I expect to be very frank with new-coming players, I will be telling them what I expect out of them and leave nothing in doubt, that way they know what to do and will know how to adapt as fast as possible, and with gelling with other players, I believe that can only come with time, so I'm not gonna force camaraderie on the players, I will let it happen naturally."

"Good answer. Although you did a good job with that pitiful Charlotte team last season, especially with Kemba Walker, you only have two years of NBA experience, as a Denver Nuggets assistant, and your reportedly stern style caused friction, particularly with more veteran players. You and Ben Gordon had a verbal altercation at a pre-game shootaround in February that drew national attention. What makes me so sure you won't rub some of the players the wrong way, as you have before? Convince me."

"Well, coach, I'm not going to deny that I have been a stern coach, and that has led to some problems with some stubborn players. I feel if we have players in place who are high character guys they will appreciate my strong voice in the locker room, and guys sometimes need to be gotten after to keep in line, you know what I mean Tony?"

                      "I understand, though I'm not 100% convinced."

The interview went well, but the red-flags are there, and I was concerned a little. All around though, he still makes it into my final 3, with Hollins and Vaughn. I have a tough decision to make.

The Hawks GM revealed his new Head Coach today at a press conference. He has hired Jacque Vaughn, who was recently fired by the Division rival Orlando Magic after a 27-55 year that was at fault of a lack of talent, not coaching. He is a solid coach, and will have an opportunity to help make this team win early with his adaptable scheme until they get the players they want for how his scheme is designed. I like his persona, and he will be a good option. I feel optimistic about our young new head coach with our young gm being a marriage for a long time.

Vaughn is young, and just retired from NBA play a few years ago, he will provide the team a mentor who is very close to some of the players perspectives and will be very good for team chemistry. His scheme is solid, but a roster retool is likely in the works. Assistant coach Kevin Eastman was hired as well.

I thought you would like the hire. I went through the offseason. The team looks great and I am excited with what we did in the draft and in free agency. Woth some contracts we committed highway robbery as we have a great team and 16 mil in cap space. The draft couldnt have gone better, we made a trade and got a steal out of it. I am thinking we should be in title contention next season.
