Re: "A Look in My Eyes" - Journey Of 5'4" Guard Michael Kane

      February 18th, 2015

The school dismissal bell rang and I made my way around the crowded hallways until I reached my locker. It felt so awkward now that I would be going straight home instead of going to basketball practice after school. The AAU season wasn't too far away though so the tradition would begin once again except I'll be a distance travel instead of a few steps into the gym.

"So if it isn't' Michael the hooper." Said Timothy who met up with me near my locker.

I laughed, "Yeah, what's up bro."

"Nothing good stuff last game, I saw it on ESPNU, yall been on TV all year, I swear."

"We too cold not to be on television, duh."

      "You got any scholarships yet?"

"What the f*ck kinda question is that, no sh*t I got like five of them now."

"Damn mister superior... Where do you think you gonna go to then?" He asked.

"I haven't given it any consideration yet." Then my eyes traced down Paige who walked past us, I hadn't talked to her in a while.

"Wow." I remarked. "Yo you can't lie, Paige is sexy as hell isn't she."

"Yeah she is, but she hates me though so f*ck her."

Suddenly, she looked in our direction and started walking right towards us.
"Hey Michael, I saw you staring at me!" She said with a smile but giving Tim a hostile look.

"Uhhhh, ya. Too pretty for me not to stare at." I topped it off with a laugh but I knew that was a corny line.

She blushed and didn't say anything immediately. ". . . Hey could you help me train with me at the gym today?"

      "Wait, for what, basketball?"

      "Ya, duh." She said.

"Since when do you play basketball?"

"Wow Michael, looks like somebody doesn't care about the girl's sports, I played on JV this year."

"Oh haha, my bad, I didn't know."

"It's ok but could you? Please!" She begged.

"Yeah of course." I couldn't reject hanging out with her.

"Great! I'll be there at around 5:00! See you there Michael!" She said as she drifted off towards the school exit doors.

"You gonna make a move ain't you?" Said Tim breaking out of the silence Paige had caused him.

"Maybe, maybe not. But why does she hate you so much?"

"I don't even know." He revealed.

"Oh, I'm about to get out of here though." I said and I departed and went towards my Mustang.

"Alright then. Wait damn that's your car?"

      "Yep, my first true love."

      "You goofy I'm out, peace."

Re: "A Look in My Eyes" - Journey Of 5'4" Guard Michael Kane

          Later that day...

After going home to chill out for a minute then gathered some gym shorts and a t-shirt and went dropped back out.

"Dad I'm heading out to the YMCA."

"Getting ready for your AAU season, huh. See you later Mike, I'll probably be out when you return."

          • • •

I got there a little earlier than what I anticipated. She said she'd be here by like five and it was only four twenty one.
I noticed a few of my school friend's sitting along the bleachers while the guys run fours on the main court.

"What's up Andre." I said. Andre Tomer, he was a wide receiver on the varsity football team.

"Sup... A good job on that state championship yesterday. I heard you scored like 15."

"Ehhh, something like that. I wasn't really shooting good but I got to the line like 10 times."

"Damn. But you tryna run with us?"

          "Yeah who's on our team?"

"Me, you, Evan, and that dude over there." He said while pointing to a chubby young kid.

"Alright but Paige about to come up here so I don't know if I will run all day."

"It's cool I'm about to leave in a few anyways."

          "Ok."

          ---

"Buckets! boy!" I was attacking the rim on these guys all game long and had just sinked the game winning fourteenth point.

"Man you've got talent kid." Said an older man who still looked to be physically built.

          "Thanks sir."

"That's because he's ranked." Stated Evan.

I walked back towards the bleachers to check my phone for a hot second before we continued the four's. It read displayed the one missed message Paige sent me fourteen minutes ago saying she was on her way. And right when I looked up I saw her walking into the gym and her gleaming eyes looking around.

"Paige, I'm right here." I said trying to get her attention.

"Oh haha I knew that." She said as she sat next to be with her basketball. "So now that I'm here, I challenge you to one on one."

"So basically you want to lose?" I teased as we both got up and walked towards the empty court.

          "Shuddup!"

          ---

"Check the ball." She said as she lined up at the type of the key.

I bounced it to her and she began dribbling, rather stiffly. I eased off of her as I made a quick assumption of her skill level and she realized the space and rose of for the jump shot which also was stiff and it hit the bottom of the net.

"Make it take it. Better guard me cause I'll make those every time." She asserted and sparked a grin at me.

"Paige you know you don't want the lockdown defense." I said while laughing.

"Bring it then! I'll still win!" She stepped back up at the wing of the court waiting for the check.

"Alright if you say so." I checked the ball and immediately brought the intense defense and she wrapped the ball up before taking a dribble.

"Told you you couldn't handle it." I backed up so she would be able to release a dribble.

She dribbled near the free throw line and took a drifter that airballed.

"Ughhh, I hate you Michael!" She said with a fake whining tone.

          ---

I ended up beating her in the one on one dreadfully without even trying. She wasn't bad but wasn't great either. But it was fun bonding with her and all in all physically defending her if you know what I mean.

          ---

"So that was fun! And enjoy the time you're better than me." She said in her high pitched voice.

"But Paige, you suck." I laughed to notify that it was all joking.

The speechless smile glued onto her face, "Yeah whatever." She then noticed her phone's vibration and checked it.

"Oh I gotta go, my dad's outside. Bye Michael!"

I horizontally threw my arms out signifying I wanted a hug and we both wrapped our arms around each other.

"Bye!" She said once again. "We should hang out again this weekend."

"Alright I'll text you later." I said as I walked back towards the bleachers to observe the game.

"How in the hell did you pull Paige?" Asked Josiah, a sophomore from Yasogami.

"Are you trying to be funny?"

"Haha nah bro. But yall go out?" He asked.

"Nah, but I'm hitting that soon."

"Her strict a** parents good luck with that sh**."

          "No worr—"

"DAMN!" Josiah piped in the middle of the sentence. I looked over at the court thinking something had just happened and saw a guy hanging on the rim after a dunk apparently.

"Please tell me you didn't just miss that!"

"He dunked . . ." I said with little expression.

"Yeah! A three sixty dunk, how the— Oh my god!" Josiah cheered on the guy after he'd made a chasedown block on the other end just after the dunk.

"Wow, who is that guy?" I asked as I became interested.

"How do you not know who that is! He's Malik Taylor, the best guard in class of 2017."

"He's a sophomore? What the hell?"

He ignored me as he became even more hypnotized into the game. I viewed as well as I watched him solely dominate the court like he was playing against a bunch of six year olds.

Finally decided to read this thread through a few days ago. Really excellent storytelling, but I will pose the question once again: how exactly do you play the games?
You probably answered before, but... it eludes me.
Hmm, wonder where you got the name Josiah?

I did a revamption of NBA 2k13's rosters using excel and it removed all NBA material from the game and replaced it with all fictional players, team names, and all that stuff.
I play the games in season mode and use player lock on Michael Kane and when I'm subbed out I switch to coach mode so I only play with my character throughout the entire game.
And Josiah is the name of one of my friends from where I used to live lol.

              Glad you like the story

I meant to do that season wrap up update I did for Kane's freshman year but I forgot that I wouldn't be able to view the game by game statistics and when I continued to the tournament it was out of reach. My bad especially since I started to change the perspective of this story and you guys weren't really able to see how I did unless I mentioned it or further posted a recap.

                Updates probably coming tomorrow!

                  April 2nd, 2014

"So Michael you ready to finally get back on the courts?" My dad asked as we sat in the family room watching the Cavaliers game.

"As always. I'm really looking forward to this AAU season." I said. "You know how many tournaments we play in, I forgot?"

"No I don't actually. But you've got the technology, check it out on your phone."

I followed the suggestion and searched our schedule on my phone's browser. Dad always told me to look it up when I had questions, he was just the one who got me enrolled but was clueless about all the aspects.
                  Spoiler

"Wow, we only have nine of them and that's including the nationals." I said after viewing the page.

"That's probably still the beginning stages, you guys might get invited to other tournaments as you progress through the season."

"Oh yeah that's true. But at least we've got some sponsored events listed. I think a lot of college scouts will be there."

"Yeah they will there definitely, actually I've been assigned to a few tournaments myself so I know they'll be there. You guys have a talented team this year too, Eduardo can put points on the board, and Sterling isn't bad either. In an addition to that you guys even have that B team so you'll always have more backup players."

"People will remember our name after the Buckeye Prep event." I said.

"Hopefully, you've got four more days until the big debut." He said. "Oh yeah how's everything going with you and, uhh, Paige right?"

"Yeah Paige. It's great we've been hanging out a lot more lately. We're heading into almost two months of dating soon."

"That's good. Hold on to her if you know she's the right one because I bet you it'll be a hassle to find that right one once you grow older."

"When I'm older I'm gonna be in the NBA making millions, I'll be able to have any girl I want." I boasted.

"Oh is that right?" He laughed. "How great would that be though, I'll have two of my own sons in the NBA if Julian made it in."

"Yeah that'd be so surreal." I daydreamed off the day I'd receive my NBA uniform and finally be able to say that I made it.

"But college should always be your first priority before you even think of that NBA stuff. You know that right?"

I really didn't agree with the statement because the stardom seemed so appealing, how would I ever turn it down? "Oh yeah of course."

"Good because you always gotta plan ahead of time Michael. You don't need to end up as one of those guys who fall out the league and end up working at some factory or something. You know what I'm saying?"

                  I nodded my head.

"But yeah, we'll have this conversation again when the time comes."

"Alright dad." I turned my eyes back to the game, surprisingly the Cavs were doing kinda good this year.

"Michael. Michael ..." My hotel roommate Erwin said in a calm voice.

"Huh?" I said still half sleep.

"Get up man, we about to go to the fieldhouse in like 30 minutes."

I ignored Erwin and went back to sleep until he hammered a pillow into my head.

                    "WHAT MAN?" I yelled.

"GET UP!" He replied in the same tone.

"Ok you could've just said that, not hit me with a f*cking pillow."

He gave a death stare and continued what he was doing.

                    • • •

We got to the facility way earlier than just being on time for our game. Coach Gatson said it was apart of the philosophy to scout the teams beforehand which totally made sense but it sucks because I could've still been sleeping right now.

"Dang, they won't miss." Blaine said as we as a team watched the first game. It was the Hidden Gems versus a team from Indiana I think and the Gems were dominating them barely allowing them to get any buckets.

"I'm about to go get something from the concession stands, coach." I said.

                    "Alright." He replied.

I walked around just getting a feel for the other teams playing, high scores were posted everywhere it seems and I saw one of the guys hitting everything he shot.

                    • • •

"IE Magic and Dayton Nets, the court is your's." Said one of the officials after the Gems had deathroned their opponents 83-44.

"Alright guys so I've never heard nor coached against this team so adjustments are going to be made ongoing. We just have to go out and do what we've been prepping for since March. Smart moves, transition basketball, and working the ball into the paint. Alright let's get two lines, and start the layups."

I'd already been announced a starter way back during one of the practices in March and coach had told me I would be depended on for playing big minutes. He also started to hate Markel so much during the period of time but he still announced him a starter over Jonathon only because he was six inches taller than Jon and our team needed more height.

                    ---

The game clock raced down and we had the game 64-46. The Magic's guard pulled up from nearly half-court and it ricocheted off the rim and that was the first win for us. Our first win of the season and I came out strong with a total of sixteen points. There were a lot of upsets on our team though, only guys who really seemed to put in the effort was me, Markel, and Jed...

"Phenomenal job out there guys." Said coach as we walked back to the bench. "We've got some time to relax until some court space opens up, uh, court two is where our opponents are playing so let's get over there."

We were all the way on court six so it we passed up a lot of other ongoing games. All of them being way more competitive than the ones we saw earlier. Then I saw one particular player who I found extremely familiar on the Ohio Elite team but I couldn't tell because of the distance.

                    ---

We watched the game while being accompanied by an obvious angry dad sitting above us in the second row.

"CALL THE ****ING FOUL REF!" He yelled as his assumed son drove in failed attempt layup.

"That's it, get out of here." The ref said while extending his arms out towards the door.

We all laughed as the guy continued to nag about what he believed to be poor officiating. The game was full of some of the worst shooters and chuckers I'd ever seen yet it remained a good game because neither team would let each other pull away in scoring at any point until the game ended on a failed three point attempt and the team's that jersey said "Blue Chips" won 55-52.

Coach turned around towards us and quietly said, "They shouldn't be a problem."

"You guys are on in about thirty minutes." Announced the referee.

                      Game against Indy Blue Chips...

"Keep shooting that Michael." Coach said from near the center of the sideline.

I wanted to listen to him but I couldn't get the ball in the basket for anything in the world. Yet we still somehow held off the Blue Chips despite me performing at such a horrid level. Only thing that I could rely on was getting to the line.

                      ---

"Two and oh!" I said. We'd won the game by fifteen points and would be advancing to round number three tomorrow.

                      • • •

"Those kind of victories deserve a group outing, where to guys?" Asked coach.

"Golden Corral or something. Not tryna sit for like an hour." Markel said in the bold voice that was heard by all the echoing by the others.

"Oh yeah, true." I said agreeing.

                      ---

We received a lot of stares from people most likely trying to figure out who all these over six foot tall people could be with our matching warm-ups on.

I returned to the table as one of the last ones to do so. And I was overwhelmed with coach Gatson already talking.

"— talk. Tomorrow we're going up against the Ballstars. Now we saw them defeat the team that beat had just won a game by forty. So clearly they aren't a joke... A lot of team work and hustle will be needed for us not to be going home early tomorrow And for you Michael,"

I took a hard swallow on the spaghetti and looked at coach curiously after he said my name.

"— this won't be a game for you trying to find your shot. If it's off like it was against our last game then I don't want you shooting, you're to look to set teammates up." Coach said.

"Oh yeah, I will if it comes down to that but I'm not going to be shooting like that tomorrow. I'm not letting that happen again." I stated.

"Alright so my point's gotten out, good game today. Enjoy the food."

We arrived into the fieldhouse with a leaderboard showing the final four; Dayton Nets, Ohio Ballstars, HoopGrind Michigan, and the Rising Stars.

I was well rested and relieved for today's game of the tourney. Coach couldn't have gave us more of an ear-full of what he told us about the Ballstars. But we'd seen it all and we knew it wouldn't be easy either.

                        • • •

I talked with their guard before the game started. His name was Charley, Charley Fernando. He was about an inch taller than me and styled the mop hairstyle.

"Hey man good luck out here today." He said.

"Same with you man. I saw you putting in work against the Hidden Gems, it's not gonna be like that today though." I laughed.

"Maybe you're right, maybe you're not." Charley then left and sided towards the backcourt to get ready for the opening tip.

                        ---

Early on in the game favored the Ballstars. I was getting early points added to my totals but within a minute or so coach sent me to the bench for Erwin to come in which I didn't understand. He was among one of the more useless players on the team based on this tournament.

                        ---

They were tough competition and never gave us the chance to make a run. Overall I began to blame myself on it all because Charley lit me up from beyond the arc all game and never even missed a three. I felt the need to have takeover in the fourth and while it was successful for a few minutes, I got fatigued pushing the ball up the floor at such a high pace and then trying to make a play.

                        ---

We ended up losing to them 58-48 in the troublesomed game for us. And that was it the Buckeye Prep tournament was a 2-1 markup.

"Look who's going home early now." Charley said.

I let out a fake smile, "Yeah . . . Good game though."

"Same with you man. I think we'll probably be meeting up once again sooner or later."

I threw my warmups back on over my game attire. "Yeah."
He gave me hell all game scoring what seemed to be like 30 points but the one thing he couldn't do was handle the ball so that was the only thing I may have edged him out on.

I walked back over to coach as he already had started the rant about our play.

"And you Michael. I thought I told you about all that godddamn shooting. What you've got to realize is that you're a point guard and you're job is to set up other players not yourself . . ." Coach exclaimed. "You know who you remind me of?"

"W—" He interrupted me before I could even ask who.

"Allen Iverson, a guy who only looked for his own shot, and look where that got him. A all-star who never won anything and who fell out of the league. And I know you're better than that."

I looked down at the floor, did I really play that bad?

Rob Taylor’s Buckeye Prep Report has hosted another annual tournament to kick off the season for some of the AAU squads of the midwest. Held at The Fieldhouse of Columbus, Taylor changed some standards and invited teams from Michigan, Indiana, as well as in Illinois. The Illinois Rising Stars took the glory back to their state after their dominant run to the finals. Multiple ranked athletes showcased at the tourney including guard Malik Taylor as well as Michael Kane.

Man, I would have loved to see a malik v. mike grand finale in that tournament.

Hopefully they meet up again in another tourney.

Yeah, it'll be the biggest battle of two high school recruits in a long time.
