Re: "A Look in My Eyes" - Journey Of 5'4" Guard Michael Kane

    April 8th, 2015

I arrived back at home after the long Monday to find my dad in the family room watching an ESPN SportsCenter show.

"Hey dad, how's it going." I said as I took a seat on the coach.

"Pretty good, finally an off day. How'd the tournament go yesterday?"

"We lost in the third round to the Ballstars. Then coach blasted at me afterwards saying I shot the ball too much."

    "Oh, is that right?"

"Yeah, I mean sometimes I feel the need to step up, nobody else on the team really does anything besides me."

"Mhmmm, well you see that's where you're wrong. If you consider yourself a good guard, you should have a strong ability to analyze your teammates strengths and weaknesses and be able to make them look good by acknowledging what they do best."

"I wish it was that easy. Defenses destroy all that crap."

"It's all about being a student of the game Mike. It's not all about just having the talent, you've got to know the game as well. Situational basketball knowledge is a strong aspect."

"And how do I learn this?" I asked.

"It's all about learning from your mistakes basically. Being aware and thinking before you act . . . I'll ask you this, can you tell me any mistakes you made during that tournament?"

"Uhhh, uhhh" I stammered trying to think of something. "No, I can't."

"See and because of that, you're not going to know any better and you'll continue to make the same mistakes over and over."

"That makes a lot of sense, dad. Thanks."

"That's what I'm here for Mike. You got any homework."

"Yeah, a project from Biology class. I'm about to work on it now."

    "Alright."

My phone notification started blowing up out of no where from the edge of my bed. I picked it up to see the familiar Kik usernames from some of my old Central teammates at the lock screen. I swiped the screen and it took me to the maximum eight member group Kik message.

    Elton Buckets: Yeah.

Eddie Gregory: u lame who do homwork

Michael Kane: When you don't do homework, you spell homework wrong. #TheStruggle

    Elton Buckets: Lmao Mike.
This conversation gave me many memories from last year. My first year of high school . . . Still living with my mom, and everything else it came with.
The most ironic thing was that just last year I was sitting on the bench on the freshman roster and a low prestigious school and now it was the exact opposite to this day.

I looked forward to meeting up with my old friends if we were ever to play them in a tournament.

"To end this practice we'll be scrimmaging. And you guys better take this seriously because I've decided that whoever wins this is going to the Milwaukee tournament this weekend. I'm extremely displeased with our A team for getting us eliminated and you guys will now have to prove yourself if you want to keep traveling because I'm not here to get embarrassed and loose by f*cking ten points . . . Let's go, this will be just like a normal game, each team's starting five onto the court and you guys make your own subs, get started. And I'm not saying anything this whole time, I'm just gonna be watching." Coach Gatson said and sat down on the bench and observed as we scrambled around trying to get situated.

I remembered what dad had told me a few days ago about remembering what I did wrong and tried to make that my main emphasis of today.

"Alright everybody stick they man. I got Colby." I said while Jay from the B team inbounded the ball.

      ---

"Come on pressure him up!" I cried when Mario made a wing after the outlet pass.

      "Nine, eight, us." He said.

I played tight defense on Colby. He no longer was able to dominate me like he did at the tryouts after a learned more about his game but he had a pattern of isolation moves he often used to advantage.

      ---

I split the defense with a pass to Sterling as he ran on the break and announced the score.

      "Ten, eleven. Yall lead."

Still, the B team dominated us on the boards but we always were able to recover and contest the shots forcing a miss. Overall, they were a lot bigger than us but we were determined as the more skillful ones which is why the teams were set up like they were.

      ---

"That's fifteen to thirteen us." I said after burying a three in the face of Colby who was late to close out.

Colby eventually caught fire and was receiving a lot of points off cutting under the basket and I tried to edge him off but he used his physical ability to finish strong.

      ---

"Jed pass coming!" I announced after the pick and roll.

"And . . . steal coming!" Colby picked off my pass and raced towards the other end to connect on the layup.

"Game!" He shouted after finishing on the other end. "Coach, twenty one to seventeen, we win."

I sighed and sat down on the floor with me arms wrapped around my knees. It was once again "all my fault".

Coach stood up and shook his head, "I want to tell B team, congratulations, you're going Milwaukee this weekend, and for the A team, twenty suicides then you're dismissed. I'm very disappointed in you."

"Pass the ball today Mike. I'm not tryna lose today." Markel said as we stepped on the court.

We were playing the Indiana Faith in the first round of the Hoosier Shootout after staying home last week when our B team went out to Milwaukee.

          "Ok . . ."

Everybody gathered around in the huddle and coach began the speech.
"Now I haven't heard much about this Indiana Faith team but the philosophy stills remains that I want no bullsh*t out here. Share the ball and make good plays. Like I discussed in practice, we're sticking with the normal starting five today and the game plan as well . . . We're two and one right now and I want to leave on Sunday being six and one. And also, they're some college coaches out here in the bleachers as well but I still expect yall to play what we here for and not to impress them."

"Nothing out of the ordinary." I said quietly to myself as I got into tip-off placement.

          • • •

We played maybe the easiest game we'd ever play in a lifetime. The Indiana Faith were an absolute joke, it seemed like they committed a turnovers every single possession and I was the key element to it. I had around seven or eight steals in the game because they'd continue to run the exact plays and eventually I caught on and we started to dominate on the fast break. We ended up winning sixty nine to thirty nine. I played very solid game with eighteen points.

"You see that Michael. This is what happens when you don't play all that ******* one on one basketball." Coach said as he patted me on the back.

"I'll continue to play like this then coach." I said with relief after he finally had something good to say.

          • • •

We headed back out to the hotel to get rest before the games would continue the next day.

"Hey good game out today." Erwin told me while we sat watching TV in the room.

"Thanks." I usually would've said you too but I hated Erwin because he served no purpose on the team but taking up my minutes I could be playing. I wondered why Colby wasn't on the A team instead of him.

            BIG Games of Day 1

Dayton Nets - The Nets came out to perform as they terrorized the Indiana Faith squad 69-39 in a turnover nightmare for the Faith. Star studded guard Michael Kane played a key role in tearing up the opponent's offense and creating many fast break opportunities for his team.

Indiana Kings Court - The Kings have protected the throne after the second biggest blowout of the day [67-45] against the Illinois Rising Stars who had just taken home the big win at the Buckeye Prep Report a few weeks ago. Small forward Alan Rashad showed no resistance as he dropped 20.

Louisville Legends - Last but not least, the Louisville Legends earn a spot on the list. The Legends came in and played a complete team effort game to knock off the EG3 All-Stars 78-58. Point guard Kennith Kareem showcased his immense shooting ability from downtown with 17 points joined by Charley Thomas's who was one rebound shy from a double double with 14 points and 9 rebounds.

Teams Advancing: Dayton Nets, All-Ohio Elite, Club Elite South, Louisville Legends, Indiana Kings Court, Illinois Gold Rush, Grassroots Indiana 2017, Indiana Dreams.

              April 26th, 2015

I walked out of my hotel room and made my way to the hotel's gym. I wasn't very tired after today's game so I figured I should get in some workouts before I called it a day. In there I saw coach sitting on a chair with a laptop towards the corner of the room.

"Hey coach, what are you doing in here?"

He looked up at me surprised, "About to get this workout in after I'm done looking over this footage of the Elite, we're playing them tomorrow so I need to know what to expect."

"Oh." I thought about the lesson my dad told me about that whole mistakes theory and figured coach would be a good person to ask about it. "You notice anything I did bad on the court today?"

He raised his eyebrows and didn't say anything right away, "Well actually you played great today. Our last tournament would've been a good time for you to ask that because I could've gave you a list that wrapped around the planet. But why do you ask?"

"It's just that my dad explained to me how knowing your mistakes could help me grow as a player."

"Oh yeah, everybody knows that. Being aware of yourself and what you do is really important in all sports."

"Yeah I know. So how's good are the Elite?"

"Well they seem to be good on keeping the game balanced on defense but they're really weak on offense according to this video. Come see for yourself." He placed the laptop onto the seat as he stood up and walked towards the bench press.

I scanned the YouTube video that was simply titled "All-Ohio Elite @ Circle City Tourney".

"Coach these guys suck." I said after watching about a minute of the video.

"If that's the case then tomorrow is a blow out?"

"If you don't play our bench . . . but either way we win."

"That's not going to happen but I'm still holding you on that statement, tomorrow you're going to lead us through that whole tournament and we're going back to Ohio with the championship."

"Of course coach. Any scouts gonna be there tomorrow?"

"Don't worry about that. Just stay focused on winning those games."

I was upset to hear that as an answer because scouts always kept low key in the background so I never knew who it was unless they were loaded in gear from the university. I really hoped that Tom Crean or a representative from IU would be there tomorrow but because of coach I probably won't end up finding out about it until the recap of it is posted.

Suddenly Blaine came in flying through the door immediately yelling.

"COACH, MARKEL AND JONATHON ARE FIGHTING IN THE HALLWAY!"

                    April 26th, 2015

Coach seemed to be frustrated immediately and paced along with Blaine who quickly ran back out of the room upon entering after he gave the message.

We approached the scene and not only saw some of our teammates holding the two back but also staff members from the hotel.

"Goddammit! What is all this bullsh*t about? Coach blasted.

Before they could even speak coach added onto his sentence.

"You know what. I don't even care, you're both suspended for the rest of the tournament. I'm sick and f*cking tired of this bullsh*t, making me look like a ******* clown in every way that's possible.."

Markel looked heated from the face while Jonathan looked like he was seconds away from crying as coach proceeded to talk with the staff members to try to not get us thrown out.

How in the world were we going to play tomorrow without our first and second string small forwards. In such a short period of time, this season was a disaster waiting to get even worst.

"Might as well add the L then cause yall ain't sh*t without me." Markel sassed back at Coach Gatson.

He turned away from the staff members in a heartbeat, "This is the exact same rea—"

He interrupted him right out from the sentence, "I don't f*cking care."

"You know what then, you're off this team. I'm calling your parents to come pick you up by tomorrow because I'm not putting up with this any longer."

                    "Ni**a I don't give a flying f*ck. I'll call them myself."

At this point coach told all of us except Markel to get to our rooms. I guess that was the end of Markel . . . But that worried me because it was apart of that deal Markel made with me to get him onto this team.

                        April 27th, 2015

We boarded the bus early in the morning and were finally bound for day two of the Hoosier Shootout only this time, our starting forward Markel wasn't going with us. His mom had picked him up yesterday and I guess that was it for him, permanently off the team...

"Jonathon, you're not suspended. I just hated that jackass Markel since the day he arrived." Coach said to Jon as the bus drove to our destination. "I'm adding you into the starting lineup today so be ready."

"I'm ready for it coach." He replied with obvious relief.

He wasn't the only one relieved with coach's decision because honestly I had no clue who played small forward on our team outside Markel and Jonathon. I figured without them we'd be screwed and I'm thinking coach must have thought the same thing which led him to revoking the decision.

                        • • •

"Let's get out there and advance yall. Last time we got taken out and we not letting that happen again. We here to represent Dayton! Let's go!" I barked in our team huddle.
I explored the other team's surroundings to find that their team's guard who looked to be as short as I was when I first got to Central last year.

The contest started in a disgrace for us as the Elite bombed us with the score being 7-0 in the opening minutes. I was the main one taking the shots early on and nothing would go my way. I tried to go into my passing mode but that failed as well and I made what some would consider "bonehead" mistakes costing the team turnovers. I constantly caught myself staring at coach to see his reactions because I was literally screwing up everything for the team.

Eventually he took me out in the stretch and without me, we began to mount a severe comeback allowing us to take the lead and from that point we dominated and wouldn't let up. And I also ended up regaining my rhythm within the late minutes of the second quarter.

The final score was sixty one to thirty nine and it'd go down as our second game of the tournament not allowing our opponents to score over forty. Me and Jon led the way combining for at least 30.

                        ------------------------

After the blowout win against All-Ohio we were on deck for whoever won the game against the Louisville Legends and the Club Elite South squad. Coach ordered us to watch them play to get a better understanding of their style of play.

"Is every team at the tournament this bad?" I said as I watched the the CES shoot at such a terrible degree.

"Aye, I don't even care. That just makes us look even better." Sterling said.

"I know but, dang I'm just saying..."

The CES (Club Elite South) won the match 59-52 in a sprouted comeback that formed in the fourth quarter. They still shot the bad in a horrid manner but one of their forwards started getting to the line almost every time he touched the ball and came in the clutch with his free-throws that allowed them to capture the win.

                        ---

It felt good to be one step away from winning this whole thing but I knew I had to keep cool here especially since we all just finished a game about two hours ago and still weren't back to one hundred percent.

Before we hit the floor we gathered around coach as usual to here the plan, "Just stick with the normal game plan guys, but don't wear yourselves out unless it's needed out there because if we win we're going to need that energy for the championship game. Michael, I need to lead us by example out there. It's extremely critical that you don't loose your mind out there."

                        ---

It was once again another blowout [61-47] for us when we shredded both the CES's offense and defense. Eduardo was an absolute beast on the fast break. A good amount of points came off transition baskets despite coach telling us to play at a slow pace this game.

I was uncontainable myself with nineteen points and eight assists.

We casually left the floor and headed back to the bench to see what coach had in store for us.

"Alright how's everyone feeling?" He asked as we all took a seat.

"Good." We said simultaneously for the most part.

"Ok good. So great game out there. I only have one problem and that's that we're not getting the ball down low to Jed or Sterling often enough. I've caught them wide open multiple times and no pass was thrown their way. We can't just give up easy buckets like that and you guys are well aware of you. We're not just going to be able to survive every game camping out on the perimeter."

We already knew the routine, after this we'd go over to our upcoming opponents game and watch them like we always did. This time it was two teams that I heard had dominated their way through the whole thing, the Indiana Dreams and the Indiana King's Court.

                          April 27th, 2015

The Indiana Dreams captured the close win from the Kings Court with the final score being 62-61 and we now knew our competition for the next round. A team loaded with guys who weren't great shooters but who could get the ball in the basket.

Prior to the game, we still had another hour of rest following the win and coach didn't want us to physically practice so we'd remain with our high intensity and energy levels. So with nothing else to do, we as a team roamed around the high school.

"You guys saw all those coaches earlier?" Jed asked no one in particular.

"Yeah I saw a lot but I'm just hoping Tom Crean or someone from Indiana is here. " I said.

"Probably for the 17U but not us . . ." Added Felipe.

"No, they're not here for YOU. I know I'm about to play my a** off and they're going to know my name"

"Shut up." He said while getting his phone out the duffle bag he carried.

"Yeah but I hope you plan on passing the ball." Sterling taunted.

"I'm tired of people calling me a ball hog! I'm averaging like, at least seven assists per game at this tournament!"

"You miss us when we're like wide open though . . . Even coach said it." Asserted Jed.

"WHATEVER. I probably noticeable missed two open teammates this whole season, practice and the tournament games. Come on now." I said growing frustration. "Oh yeah and how come all my player profiles online talk about my passing and court vision skills."

"Ok Kobe Bryant. Do what you do then."

                          • • •

The hour flew by and before we knew it, we were back on the court just about ready to play the last game. I glanced around in the crowd to see if any significant faces were around but from the quickness of it I wasn't able to quite analyze it to a full extinct.

Coach ranted about what exactly we were to do if we wanted to win then we were out on the court.

The first quarter started in a blur for me. I made some awkward mistakes such as turning the ball over when I did a careless backpedal towards the halfcourt line resulting in a backcourt violation as my turnover number two in just the opening minutes. Then the guy who I was responsible for guarding constantly floated past me right off the dribble or off the pick and got to the rim before I was ever able to fully recover.

Despite the early struggles coach kept me in the game for the majority of the time except for a few minutes when he subbed Blaine in but when I came back in I felt I was more in the correct state of mind I needed to be in. All the thoughts of hoping that the scouts were sitting in those bleachers came back to me and my game elevated on offense. I started taking a lot of risks with my passing and some of them failed because of my lousy teammates not catching the outlets but for the most part everything flowed well and we ran our plays with a great deal of success.

The final score was 65 to 49. In my mind it was the start of our path to the nationals this year. We were no doubt the best team in this whole thing and from what people said, these were some talented teams but we stood our ground and all in all, I believed I led us to this and I would be doing the same in each and every one of the remaining ones.

Do you guys want to see a specific time frame date (From the story not the real life date) for these stories? Because currently Kane is in the beginning stages of the AAU season of his sophomore year in high school and we're already at 220 posts so I'm making a rough estimation that by the end of the sophomore year it will be at around 280 posts and at that rate going on until high school we'll be at 560 just when Kane graduates HS. So should I do more time advances to get farther in this quicker or is it good the way it is?

It's good the way it is IMO. I think this series could run well into the future and past newer game releases, so the post numbers don't really matter, because I don't think there is a real time constraint on it, at least to me. You may have a deadline when the series will have to come to an end, which could alter things a bit.
