March 7th, 2016 - Flu Game > Sprained Wrist Game

Two weeks ago Northern Colorado wrapped up with the regular season with a win in the season finale against Montana in a battle over the second seed in the conference. On the night, he seniors also celebrated their last appearance on the floor they’d been playing on over the past couple years of their college careers. The night had its share of emotions and Kendall could only watch from the bench due to his sprained wrist that had brought him great agony at the time.

Now it was time for the conference tournament and despite still having the symptoms from the injury there was no way in hell Kendall wasn’t going to play in this game against Eastern Washington. He argued with Coach Hill, who didn’t want him to risk another injury, for a good twenty minutes until he gave in and told Kendall he’d allow him to come off the bench against Eagles.

The team arrived at Walkup Skydome, being the biggest arena in the conference it was the obvious home for the tourney. The stadium had its full house cheer when both teams brought their players out. Kendall gazed at the surroundings, he knew if the team could pull it together and win this tournament they’d have an automatic bid in the NCAA Tournament, it was that easy.

“And now for your Northern Colorado basketball team!” The announcer shouted from the PA booth.

One section of the crowd booed while the other cheered and clapped. Kendall high fived his teammates as they jumped off the bench after their name was called, Kendall wasn’t very happy about not being a part of it.

The game started off rough; Kendall quickly lost hope when he saw his team down by six in the opening two minutes. Relief struck him however when things only got better when Tim knocked down two straight threes. This allowed the momentum of the arena to start drifting in the Bear’s favor but Eastern Washington responded and got a huge dunk at the other end which sent their fans insane.

Kendall looked at B.J. Hill with his eyebrows raised, he felt like a bench warmer waiting for his name to be called, that was something Kendall never had experienced in his entire life... The team was now down 16-17, Kendall watched as they showcased good ball movement with the ball landing into Cody’s hands for an open mid-range jumper.

18-17, Kendall got up and clapped for his team and once again looked at his coach waiting to get subbed in.

    Still nothing.

Eastern Washington scored a three and took a 20-18 lead and the following offensive possession the Bears turned the ball over only for the Eagles to thankfully miss their three point attempt from the corner. Tevin pushed the ball to the other end and found Dominique open on the wing and he fired right away but the shot hit the back iron and fell #55’s hands.

Kendall looked over at an assistant coach and shook his head, “We’re playing like idiots.”

Eastern Washington earned a trip to the line and Kendall finally heard his name called.

“Go check in Kendall, be careful out there.”

Kendall came out and played the exact opposite, he was reckless, and during his first offensive possession he caught the ball at the short corner and drove it all the way in in what should’ve been an and-one.

    He wanted this win.

A couple plays later Cody McDavis stepped up to the free throw line and knocked down the first *and the second hit the right side of the rim and Kendall skied up and grabbed a vicious rebound and put it right back up, this time he earned the and one. Chase gave him a huge shove and the crowd went wild! He connected with the free throw and the team now led 24-21. When Corey Spence came in off the bench and hit a 3 Eastern Washington was forced to call a timeout after the Bears had made their sudden run.

Sooner or later it was looking like an in-season repeat, N. Colorado had worked their way to a ten point lead in the 31-21 ball game, Kendall was playing like nothing ever happened!

Coach Hill eventually brought him back to the bench at the 4:30 mark in the first half after Kendall was seen tweaking with his wrist.

“Great job,” B.J. pats him on the back. “You didn’t fake that injury did you?” He laughs and looks back into the game where the Bears continue their success and eventually gets way ahead with the score at 40-28 with just over a minute remaining in the half. The press was absolutely destroying Eastern Washington… The game seemed just about over when the Bears went into the locker room with an 18 point lead.

Dominque was playing great as a fill in for Kendall with 13 points that tied with Cody but Kendall wanted back on the floor especially when Eastern Washington came out the locker room playing like there was no tomorrow, their point guard Drew Brandon was torturing Tevin on offense and had brought the team to a quick 13-2 run to open the half. The score was getting close at 50-43.

Coach Hill got a little impatient and looked over at Kendall on the bench, “Can you play?”

“Hell yeah I can play.” He jumped off the seat and went to the scorer’s table without even getting the word from coach.

Kendall entered in for Dominque and once again made a play that impacted the game. Eastern Washington’s #33 was clearly not a good dribblers but tried his hand at multiple moves to go around Kendall at the half court, he ended up stumbling by himself and Kendall recovered on the steal and finished with a posterizing dunk at the other end plus the foul. He’d go on to miss the free throw but the dunk got the team a 9 point lead that fired them up.

Kendall’s success only continued as he and Cody started to put the team on their back and revive their first half dominance as the scoreboard had them up 61-47. Kendall was once again put on the bench when the game seemed out of hand. Dominuque check in and the Eagles started making a push as Drew Brandon and Tyler Harvey made a huge push to bring their team back but time was not on their side.

Northern Colorado got the last cheer and defeated Eastern Washington 78-71.

Kendall was interviewed by a Fox News reporter after the game who asked, “Kendall, you played with a sprained wrist yet came off the bench and played one of the most efficient games in college basketball this season, 15 points, 10 rebounds! How does it feel and how’s your wrist?”

“Yeah, my wrist is cool, I might have stressed it a little but I’m not crying about it. My goal is to get to the NCAA tournament, we don’t got a good enough record so we’ll have to win this tourney, I’m determined – maybe the most determined player in the nation actually. We’re going to turn some heads.”

Lol I find it funny that the formatting off that storyline above was glitched in result of the title that referenced to Kendall's injury game being better than Jordan's

Northern Colorado Headed to NCAA Tournament!!!

          2/11/2016

Greeley, Colo - The Northern Colorado conference championship win at the Northern Arizona Lumberjack’s very own Walkup Skydome spread quicker than Paul Revere’s announcement to the Patriots. The Bears are going to the NCAA National Tournament for the first time since 2011 after their 73-63 win over the 22-6 Northern Arizona team!

“It was only a matter of time before we caught on to their game,” B.J. Hill said. “We played them twice in the regular season and they blew us out the water on both occasions. K.J. Bluford and Quinton Upshur were their best players so it was very straight forward that we’d need to slow down those too with extended pressure and that’s what we did. They both ended up scoring over fifteen but their shooting percentages definitely weren’t too great.”

Kendall Jenkins returned to the starting five after claiming he was almost 100% recovered from his wrist injury. He turned out as the hero with numbers nearly identical to his game against Eastern Washington the night before. The freshman once again scored 15 points, tallied 10 rebounds and 3 assists which are the exact same as they were against the Eagles.

“My wrist was still messing with me, that is why my shot was off,” Kendall said afterwards. “Coach tried to bench me but I didn’t want to go. Like I said last night; I wanted these wins badly. Next stop is the tournament.”

Northern Colorado had three other double-digit scorers including Tevin Svihovec, Dominque Lee, and Cody McDavis. Overall the Bears played a very fast pace game that resulted in 67 shot attempts and a finish of 38% shooting from the field. Their defense and play in the passing lanes allowed them to force the Big Sky’s best FG% team to shoot just 36% on the night and turn the ball over a total of 14 times compared to their 8.

The junior Tevin Svihovec had 13 points and his perfect free throw percentage [8-8] towards the end of the game helped seal the deal for the visiting Bears. Dominque Lee continued his stint in the starting lineup after replacing fellow senior Tim Huskisson who’s been struggling lately. Lee didn’t hesitate for any of his 18 shots but at the end of the game he only connected on 6 to finish with 13 points. After a career high 20 points in the semi-finals, Cody McDavis added 11 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 steals.

Northern Arizona’s probable NBA second round draft pick Quinton Upshur put up 20 points on 7-20 shooting that wasn’t good enough to hold up for his team. K.J. Bluford who did not play in the last meeting between these two teams had 15 points but like his teammate, he had a very questionable array of shot selection as he fired up 15 threes while only making 3.

“These kids worked hard all season and the results paid off all the up uptil now,” The Lumberjacks head coach Adras said. “We just couldn’t get our shots to fall, something we never really struggled with.”

Northern Colorado gets their automatic bid in the upcoming NCAA tournament while Northern Arizona will have to wait until selection Sunday to see if they can luck out with their solid record.

                    March 19th, 2016 - Round of 64: Halftime - Oklahoma 36, N Colorado 28

“You guys remember this right?” Coach Hill begins as his team gathers around at the whiteboard. “We opened this season with I believe a 1-4 record and we were getting blown out game after game, nobody thought we’d make it this far, not even our own fan base, but look at us now, we ultimately overcame the odds… This is no time to give up now because of that scoreboard out there, Oklahoma is the second seed and they’re only beating us by eight points. This isn’t over, I want all of you to understand that… We’ve got a great chance at winning this,” He picks up the marker from the ledge and starts drawing the game plan. “These guys are shooting the three ball and not making a lot of them so with that being said we’ll stick in the 2-3, that kid #1 off the bench [Frank Booker] seems to be our only concern, we have to close out better if he gets back in the game… Continue to get the ball inside and play the passing lanes to get out on the fast break. You guy’s determination is going to be the difference between winning and losing this game, let’s go. Let’s push the ball, make smarter decisions, get to the free throw line, and keep these guys off the boards.”

“Alright bright it in.” Tim stands in the middle of the teams who had circled around him.

“The bottom line is that our season can either be over today or we can make a blast and knock these bitches out of this tournament,” Tim looks at the eyes of his teammates. “I don’t want to go back to Greeley and have everybody say how sad they are about the news. Let’s make something happen, we want people to be proud of us and not just be the ****ing stupid 15 seed team that people question on how they got in this tournament. Let’s go out there and win this ****!”

                    “Bears on three, let’s go; 1, 2, 3.”

                    “BEARS!”

Northern Colorado Season Ends in First Round

                      3/19/2016

Greensboro, N.C. (AP) - Oklahoma trampled over N Colorado pretty easily in the opening round of the annual NCAA March Madness Tournament.

With just an 8 point lead heading into halftime, #2 seed Oklahoma appeared to be in a game that would possibly be a battle up until the final minutes but that wasn't the case as the Sooner's prevailed over Northern Colorado 75-57.

"My boys underestimated the team at the beginning and they were able to give us a quick scare," Lon Kruger said. "I had to call a timeout after Colorado had made a little run, I just made sure they were awake. From there they picked things up and I'm glad we'll be continuing our hopeful run in this tournament.

The Sooners earned their #2 seed after an impressive 26-4 season in the Big 12. That seeding also stands as their highest since 2009 with Blake Griffin where they lost in the Elite 8.

With freshman starter Nkeruwen Hendry out for the season and possibly the rest of his career, junior Austin Mankin made a surprising appearence in the starting lineup and made himself a factor with 7 points, 7 rebounds, and both 2 steals and assists.

"I didn't play a lot a lot throughout the season, when coach said I'd be starting I was't expecting it at all." Mankin laughed, the 6'8 forward averaged just 5.6 minutes a game prior to this game.

A guy who we thought would start was another junior, Frank Booker. Instead he came off the bench and played a key role in trouncing the Bears out of the game as he went lethal from beyond the arc, scoring 16 points [5-8 FG, 4-6 3PT] in under 15 minutes, people were curious as to why Kruger didn't grant him any more playing time after his hot start.

Everyday starters Tashawn Thomas, Isaiah Cousins, and Jordan Woodard all played the game up to expectations. Thomas, who's expected to be a possible NBA lottery pick, got in some early foul trouble as wasn't able to play as many minutes as usual but still put up 10 points plus 4 rebounds. Cousins added 11 and Jordan Woodard stuffed the sheet with 9 points, 9 assists, and 4 steals.

Northern Colorado had a different story. While they forced Oklahoma to a total of 17 turnovers, the Bear's 18 proved to be way more of a factor for the Sooner's as they were able to finish fast break opportunities more times than not, unlike Northern Colorado who made the tournament with a 16-13 record on an automatic big for winning their Big Sky Conference Title.

"I couldn't stop them from fouling," Coach B.J. Hill said. "That's a main reason they won the game, we kept fouling in shooting motion and they got to the line and connected with almost every shot. It's just the little things that can tear the other team apart, that's what Oklahoma did to us."

Hill's talking about the Sooner's 27 free throw attempts where they made 22, the Bear's lost by 18. If it wasn't for the constant fouling, they might've had a shot. Instead they look the loss and ended their season on the day.

The pesky Sooner defense forced guard Tevin Svihovec to 6 turnovers while he finished wit a content 9 points, 5 assists, and a revenge of 4 steals. Kendall Jenkins, a freshman and leading scorer for the low-profile Bears, finished with the team high's in both points and rebounds; 16 points and 9 rebounds.

"I tried really hard to keep us in the game," Jenkins said. "I tried my hand at passing, I tried to get steals, I continued helping on the board... Oklahoma was too good, we couldn't even dribble without them taking the ball from us."

Northern Colorado will hang up its jerseys and call it a wrap for their 15-16 campaign while Oklahoma will continue with their stay at Greensboro when they take on #7 seeded Albany who's coming off a ten point 66-58 win over #10 Villanova.

                          March 20th, 2016 - It's all Over

The plane flew the men’s Northern Colorado basketball team back across country as they landed at home in Greeley early the next morning. The students on campus took it upon themselves to surprise the disappointed and gloomy team at the entrance as they assembled themselves in a long line and congratulated them as they got off the shuttle bus.

Kendall looked around at all the people, “The **** are they congratulating us for, Oklahoma made us look like fools on national television.”

Tevin who was standing closest to Kendall responded, “You win some and you lose some. We made it far enough, we deserve some recognition, here it is.”

“See, that’s the problem,” Kendall stops and looks at Tevin. “Far enough isn’t good ENOUGH, I want to make it ALL THE WAY, not get blown out and get cheered on for it.”

“Ok, why are you ranting at me? It’s all over now…”

“Just speaking my mind, man… We could’ve gone farther.”

Kendall would spend the rest of that day with Charlie as he deeply considered transferring once again. Charlie says she still wasn’t sure if she’d be able to go but Kendall was getting a little impatient with things in Greeley, he’d already had plans to go visit the University of Oregon for a short period of his Spring Break after getting in contact with their freshman small forward Dontae’ Brown, the two had been distant friends after going to a skills academy back in Kendall’s junior year of high school.

But for now, Kendall was back to living the college life, partying and having a good time. Something he hadn’t gotten to do in a while now.
