    January 4, 2008

FGCU (5-11) came into CSU Fieldhouse and shut down the struggling Charleston Southern (6-6) offense in a 70-45 win. After starting so well at home (5-0), the Buccaneers have now dropped three straight.

A poor shooting effort all around led to only four players connecting on multiple shots. Sheldon Strickland had a particularly poor night, shooting just 1-15 from the field including 0-9 from three. Of the bench, Saah Nimley had his best game of the season as he finished with 10 points and 2 rebounds.

As for FGCU, Brett Comer scored a game and season-high 27 points, adding 2 rebounds and 3 steals. CSU couldn't contain his outside shooting as he went 7-10 from downtown. Kevin Cantinol was a defensive menace and on the mind of the Buccaneer shooters all evening, finishing with 12 rebounds and a block.

The Buccaneers finish up non-conference play above .500 on January 7th as they visit Belmont who are also out of the Atlantic Sun Conference.

        Charleston Southern (6-7) @ Belmont (5-11)
        Curb Event Center
        January 7, 2008

It was a close game for 20 minutes, then the wheels fell off for Charleston Southern (6-7) who dropped below .500 to end their non-conference season and their third straight overall in an 83-58 drubbing at Belmont (5-11).

The game was back and forth in the first half with Belmont eventually seizing the lead at the half, 31-26. After the half it was a completely different game for the Buccaneer defense, allowing 52 second half points. For a team that scores just over that for a game on an average night, that spelled disaster.

Kenny Mitchell was CSU's best player finishing with 10 points, 7 rebounds and 2 assists in his 32 minutes of action. Cedrick Bowen tallied 10 points and grabbed 4 rebounds to help out down low.

Ian Clark, arguably Belmont's most dynamic scorer didn't end up with his season-high, but lived up to his dynamic nature, finishing with 25 points on 9-16 shooting. Trevor Noack (9 points and 13 rebounds) and Chad Lang (9 points and 10 rebounds) also impressed coming off the bench in limited action, but helped to break the game open in the second half.

Charleston Southern heads in to Big South action on a three game losing streak, but know the real season starts now. With no clear-cut favorite to come out of the Big South, the Buccaneers know they have just as much of a chance as anyone to find their way to the top of the conference. CSU will open up Big South action at home against VMI who finished non-conference play at 7-5.

          January 12, 2008

Game on Buccaneer supporters, the offense is back! Charleston Southern (7-7, 1-0) took their opening game of the Big South regular season with a big win over VMI (7-6, 0-1) by a score of 74-59.

The big men of CSU were too much to handle as Cedrick Bowen and Paul Gombwer were dominant. They imposed their will all evening, grabbing boards and battling their way to the stripe. Bowen led the way with 17 points and 13 rebounds, while Gombwer chipped in with 13 points and 15 rebounds. Sheldon Strickland finally found his shooting ways and finished with 15 points on 6-12 shooting, 3-5 from three.

VMI was unable to find their way from three as they shot an ugly 3-24. Big man D.J. Covington and guard Rodney Glasgow were two bright spots on a rough night for the Keydets. Covington finished with 10 points and 9 rebounds and Glasgow scored 11 while assisting on 7 other baskets, but unfortunately had 3 costly turnovers.

The Big South regular season continues with another home game for Charleston Southern as they play host to Radford (4-8, 1-0).

                  January 14, 2008

It was a frustrating night for CSU fans tonight as the bigs battled foul trouble all night long. In the end visiting Radford (5-8, 2-0) keep their Big South record clean in a 71-65 win over Charleston Southern (7-8, 1-1).

Kenny Mitchell led the way for the Buccaneers tonight with 15 points and 12 rebounds and freshman small forward Dominique Williams had his best game of the season with 16 points on 7-9 shooting. This was not enough as the big men of CSU were in foul trouble early, leading to a less aggressive game while allowing Radford to have their way inside.

Martins Abele took advantage of the softer defense on him and he went to town inside in the second half, finishing with 15 points on 6-7 shooting and added 11 rebounds for the double-double. Although guard Blake Smith shot an unimpressive 4-19, his 16 points were enough to help Radford stay undefeated in Big South play.

Charleston Southern travel north to Lynchburg, Virginia to visit Liberty (2-13, 1-1) who have struggled out of conference, but have found an early conference victory to end their losing streak at 10.

The Liberty Flames (3-13, 2-1) are not what their record says they are. Liberty came out firing in the first half on their home court and led 40-24 at the half over Charleston Southern (7-9, 1-2) en route to a 72-58 victory.

Charleston Southern was paced by Kenny Mitchell's 12 points and 5 rebounds, while Jonathan Brooks was 3-3 from three, finishing with 10 points off the bench.

Liberty's first half offensive display wasn't as explosive in the second half, but it was enough to hold up. The Flames offense was led by John Brown and his 18 points on 7-10 shooting, adding 8 rebounds as well. The overall size and strength of Liberty was too much for CSU as they out-rebounded them 42-29.

Charleston Southern looks to turn things around on the road as they pay a visit to High Point (8-4, 2-1) on January 21st.

Nice to see the Zags playing well, totally shocked to see Austin Peay in the Top-25 and as the #1 Mid-Major, makes me curious to what roster set you are using.

Oh and congrats on staying around .500 a win streak or 2 should put you into a nice position come conference tourney time.

Thanks Deuce! We are doing alright. Been a struggle putting the ball in the basket and we're incredibly inconsistent, but it's been fun!

I'll have to look at Austin Peay's roster and get back to you on that one.

Charleston Southern (8-9, 2-2) emphatically found their way back to .500 in the Big South tonight with a huge 80-67 win on the road as High Point (8-5, 2-2) fell to the same mark in the conference.

In their best offensive showing of the season, CSU was able to hold off a late run while connecting on their free throws. Jeremy Sexton was the guard all Buccaneer fans have been waiting to see in his best game yet. Sexton finished with 20 points and 4 assists on 7-9 shooting (3-4 from three). It was a solid game from all the CSU players, but Kenny Mitchell also stood out with 18 points and 9 rebounds as he helped to clinch the win hitting 12 of his 14 free throw attempts.

On the other side of the court, High Point nearly fought their way back into the game. Nick Barbour was the standout performer with 21 points and 7 assists. In the end, foul trouble hurt the big men and High Point was unable to crawl entirely back into the game.

Charleston Southern makes its way back home for a game against Big South leaders UNC Asheville (9-6, 4-0) on January 26th.

                              January 26, 2008

UNC Asheville (10-6, 5-0) came into CSU Fieldhouse on a mission and put together an impressive first half that was never overcome by Charleston Southern (8-10, 2-3). In the end, the Bulldogs came away with an easy 92-71 victory on the road.

Jeremy Sexton led the Buccaneers with 14 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists from his guard position. Off the bench, Zimmy Nwogbo had his best game of the season finishing with 12 points and 6 rebounds on 5-6 shooting.

It was easy to pick the best performance of the night. Matt Dickey, who is averaging just over 17 ppg finished with a game and season-high 33 points on an efficient 11-16 shooting, 4-4 from three. Forward Quinard Jackson and guard J.P. Primm also had great nights to help keep UNC Asheville on top of the Big South standings. Jackson chipped in 15 points and 7 rebounds, while Primm scored 14 points with 5 assists and 3 steals.

The Buccaneers will host Winthrop (5-12, 2-3) in their next Big South contest as they try and rebound from this home defeat.
