    Winthrop (5-13, 2-4) @ Charleston Southern (9-10, 3-3)

    CSU Fieldhouse
    January 28, 2008

It was a great night for all five starters for Charleston Southern (9-10, 3-3) who took care of business at home in an 80-71 victory over Winthrop (5-13, 2-4).

With four of the five starters scoring in double figures for CSU, it was Kenny Mitchell who stood out the most with his 18 points (9-10 from the line), 13 rebounds and 5 assists. It's amazing what this team can do when they are not forcing shots from three. Jeremy Sexton had a wonderful game with 15 points, 4 assists and a steal from his guard position.

Winthrop's starting five kept pace alongside the Buccaneers starting five, but it was their sixth man Andre Smith who led the team with 16 points. James Bourne was a basket away from a double-double with a solid 8 points, 13 rebounds and 3 assists at the power forward spot.

Charleston Southern now go on the road to battle Coastal Carolina who is surprisingly struggling in the early going at 5-11 overall and just 2-4 in the Big South.

      Charleston Southern (9-11, 3-4) @ Coastal Carolina (6-11, 3-4)
      Kimbel Arena
      February 2, 2008

For the first time this season, Charleston Southern (9-11, 3-4) couldn't hold onto a halftime lead. Up 39-34 at the half, they allowed Coastal Carolina (6-11, 3-4) to score at will in the second half to drop the game on the road that should have been theirs 78-71.

The guard play for the Buccaneers was by far the best of the season tonight with Jeremy Sexton and Sheldon Strickland scoring a combined 43 points. Sexton had a season-high 25 points as he went 7-12 from downtown and dishing out 4 assists. Strickland scored 18 and was 4-11 from three while also grabbing 4 rebounds and assisting on three baskets. Cedrick Bowen was also on point tonight with another double-double performance, scoring 13 points and grabbing 11 boards on an efficient 6-9 shooting. So, it was quite a disappointment not getting the important road win after those three individual performances.

It was a two-man show for the Chanticleers between guard Anthony Raffa and forward Tyler Poole. Poole's field goal percentage may not have been so impressive, but he had a season and game-high 26 points thanks to a perfect 14-14 from the line to help seal the game late. Poole finished with a double-double, adding 12 rebounds and 5 assists to his 26 points. For Raffa, he finished with 16 points, 2 assists and 2 steals to help Coastal Carolina grab the much-needed home win.

Staying on the road, Charleston Southern will be in Virginia to play Radford (7-11, 4-3) in their next Big South game. In the last meeting, Radford stole one at CSU Fieldhouse 71-65. The Buccaneers look to return the favor on February 9th.

          Charleston Southern (10-11, 4-4) @ Radford (7-12, 4-4)
          Dedmon Center
          February 9, 2008

It wasn't just revenge for a home court loss, it was a buzzer beating dagger that allowed Charleston Southern (10-11, 4-4) to win this middle of the pack Big South match-up over Radford (7-12, 4-4) 65-64 in comeback fashion. The Buccaneers were down 37-29 at the half and had not won a game this season after being down this big at the half, however there's a first for everything.

For the second straight game, Jeremy Sexton went for over 20 points as he finished with 23 points and 3 assists on 8-11 shooting, 3-5 from deep. Although he had a rough night from the line (just 2-5), Paul Gombwer was able to finish with 4 points and 10 rebounds in just 22 minutes of play. Sheldon Strickland wasn't the scoring threat he had been in the last game, but he was the playmaker tonight finishing with 7 points, 3 rebounds and 7 assists in the winning effort.

Radford's mid-range shooting left a lot to be desired. Blake Smith finished with 16 points and 2 assists, but was just 6-17 from the field as he settled for many contested jumpers. Off the bench, Evan Faulkner provided a spark with his 11 points and 3 assists although he did turn the ball over twice.

The highlight of the game came with Sexton's 15-foot jumper over Radford's Jarell Smith in the closing seconds of the game that provided to be the game-winning bucket with just 1.4 seconds remaining, beating the buzzer for the Buccaneer win.

CSU will conclude this string of three road games as they stay in Virginia to play VMI (12-8, 5-3), who has put together a nice string of three wins before dropping their last to get themselves close to the top of the Big South, just behind UNC Asheville.

Thanks man! These wins are few and far between, so I have to enjoy this one for sure.

Season is moving along decently, nothing to complain about. Definitely looks like you have a good foundation to build upon.

Still plenty of time to try to grab a 3 or 4 seed for the conference tourney. Still a chance to win the whole thing and get to the NCAAs. Just need to keep winning against these middle of the pack teams.

It's been up and down with no defining moments as of yet. You'll see how we finish the regular season tonight!

I'll just laugh at this now. HAHAHAHAHA. Okay now that I got that out of the way, I'll post the rest of the season now.

                        ENJOY!

After a promising first half that saw Charleston Southern (10-12, 4-5) hold a 36-35 halftime advantage, a disastrous second half saw hosts VMI (13-8, 6-3) coast to an 81-61 victory.

For the last few games, CSU has been able to spread the ball around and move it to find the open shot. Tonight, they could do no such thing as VMI doubled them up in assists (20-10). Jeremy Sexton continued his scoring as he led the team with 17 points and Paul Gombwer had a solid game with 8 points and 11 assists.

Michael Sparks was able to redeem himself after his last game against CSU as he dropped 19 points, grabbed 3 rebounds and added 2 steals to lead the Keydets. D.J. Covington also had himself a nice game with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

It was a tough loss for the Buccaneers after the first half showed so much promise. They will next find themselves back at CSU Fieldhouse to host High Point (9-11, 2-8) after beating them 80-67 at Millis Athletic Convention Center back on January 21st.

For the second game running Charleston Southern (10-13, 4-6) have lost a game after leading at the half. In tonight's game the Buccaneers held a 28-24 advantage before losing it late against High Point (10-11, 3-8) in a 63-57 defeat.

The guards for Charleston Southern may have had the best offensive showing in terms of total points, but their shooting was awful at best. They combined for 10-30 from the field, 5-20 from three. Jeremy Sexton finished with 14 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists, while Sheldon Strickland finished with 15 points, 5 assists, 3 steals but had a season-high 5 turnovers.

For High Point it was quite a showing for the starting five with three of them achieving double figure scoring. Leading the way was Nick Barbour with 17 points and 3 assists and Corey Law with 15 points, 9 assists and 2 blocks. Also chipping in was their center Travis Elliot with 10 points and 7 rebounds.

With the loss, Charleston Southern are slipping steadily in the Big South standings. Up next for the Buccaneers will be a home game with Liberty who is keeping pace with the top of the league with a conference record of 7-4 even though their overall record of 8-16 isn't so spectacular.
