    UC Davis shutsdown CS Fullerton

    24@ 63

*I'm trying a different game recap style, to see what I like*

Davis,CA-UC Davis got a shot at CS Fullerton Thursday, after dropping the first conference game of the year to CS Northridge. UC Davis defended home court and they defended it good. Kenney Terry UC Davis' team leader had a bit of a struggle in this one. Only shooting 6 time's, Fullerton had the right idea. The game plan was to shut down Terry and they thought they had a chance. The only problem is they forgot that they had to score to win also. Team leader for the Aggies was Point Guard Fransisco Loughton . Fransisco had 11 points, 2 board, and 5 assist. However, it wasn't the Aggies offense that won the game for them, it was the defense. Holding CS Fullerton to 13 in the first half, and 11 in the 2nd half is an astonishing feat. The Aggies go to 1-1 in conference play, and 7-7 on the year. Let's see if they can make a late push for the tourney.

Aggies advance to 4-1 in Conference Play!

Game 1 had the Aggies traveling to UC Irvine to dance with their rival. This was a high scoring affair, as the Aggies took this one 83-79. 4 of the 5 starters were in double figures, with Longar Meyers leading the way with 18 points, going 5-7 from deep.

In the 2nd game UC Davis again had to travel to a hostile environment. They went to UC Riverside, who were on top of the conference at the time. The Aggies were not intimidated though, and they pulled it off 66-63 in overtime. 6th man Marius Sorrentine hit a 3 pointer at the buzzer to win the game.

The 3rd and final matchup had UC Davis defending homecourt against 10-7 Long Beach State. The Aggies were once again led by Shooting Guard Longar Meyers. Meyers had 22 points, going 6-11 from deep and propelled his team to victory 69-65!

The Aggies will now try to defeat the UC Santa Barbara Gaucho's, who are in first of the Big West. Check back later for news on the game.

        Aggie's pull out close game

Davis,CA-The UC Davis Aggies have done it! With a chance to grab a share of 1st place of the Big Sky, UC Davis looked to defend homecourt against conference leaders UC Santa Barbara. They did just that securing this one 73-69. Going into half time the Aggies were down by 5, 37-32. Once again coach Turner needed something to motivate his guys, so he used what he used in year 1 when facing the Memphis Tigers. He wrote on his board, Why not us? He said the meaning behind it is, "Why can't we win this game? Why can't we go dancing? Why can't we make the sweet 16? Why not us? It just fires me up talking about it, and it works!" The 2nd half started with UC Davis going on a 12-0 run, fueled by Fransisco Loughton. Loughton only scored 9 points, and 8 of them came during this 12-0 run. The Aggies were led by Longar Meyers, who has really stepped it up as of late. He had 16, going 4-8 from long distance. Buzz Daley, sophomore power forward led the team in scoring with 17. He is a force down low, despite only being 6 foot, 8 inches. The Aggies next 3 games are against sub .500% teams, so look for a 3 game review on them before facing UC Irvine, their conference rival.

Aggies get 3 game sweep; advance to 14-7 on the year.

In game 1 UC Davis beats 7-11 Cal Poly, by a score of 77-74. This one wasn't pretty, but hey a win is a win as coach said after the game. The team was once again led by shooting guard Longar Meyers, who had 21 points this outing, going 5-9 from distance.

Game 2 had UC Davis heading to face the Pacific Tigers. This one was not close from the get go as UC Davis cruised to a 88-70 victory. Again, the Aggies were led by Longar Meyers and his hot play as of late. This time he only dropped 18 points, going 3-7 from downtown. Buzz Daley also scored 16, shooting 5-7 from the charity stripe.

Looking for a sweep in game 3 the Aggies stayed at home and faced UC Riverside. The Aggies pulled off a 74-66 victory. The 3 headed dog struck again as Longar Meyers, Kenney Terry, and Buzz Daley all scored 15 points. Daley was one rebound from a triple double.

The Aggies now sit on top of the conference with a 2 game lead, infront of UC Northridge. They will now square off with UC Irvine, 12-8 on the year, and 5-5 in conference play.

Great start to the season at 14-7. UC Davis actually had a really good year in real life this year going 25-6 and winning the Big West regular season. They got upset in the conference tournament by Hawaii though, so they are NIT bound.

                Aggies pull it off!

Davis,CA-The Aggies have almost secured the #1 spot in the conference. After beating cross state rival, and one of the better teams in the conference things look very good. They didn't just beat them, they stabbed the knife--and then twisted it. With a final score of 91-75 the Aggies made sure that there was not one question left to be answered. With not only one team left on the schedule with a winning record, the Aggies hope to have the #1 seed come playoff time. Buzz Daley and Longar Meyers were once again forces. Buzz had his first career double-double, going 18 and 12. He shot 6-7 from the line which is also nice to see. Meyers had 16 points, but left 5 points hanging on the line. He only shot 50% going 5-10. We will now be simulating until conference tourney time where the Aggies will still probably have to win out to get into the NCAA Tourney, which is the Aggies main goal at this point in the year.

                  Aggies win conference!!

Game 1 had the Aggies heading to Long Beach State. Long Beach State sat at 10-12 heading into the game, but have played teams tough so far. Once again Longar Meyers led his team to victory, 72-65. Meyers dropped in 18 going 3-7 from behind the arc.

In the 2nd game UC Davis was on the road against UC Santa Barbara. UC Santa was 14-10 before the game. If the Aggies win this one they have the conference all secure to themselves. The Aggies did just that. Burying UC Santa Barbara 82-63! This time leading the Aggies to victory was small forward Kenney Terry goin 4-6 from deep, and scoring 20 points. He also added 11 rebounds, having his season 1st double-double.

The 3rd matchup had UC Davis back at home against struggling Pacific. Pacific comes in at 5-17 on the year, although the record doesn't tell the whole story. This one was closer then it should have been, but UC Davis pulled it off 77-73. Leading the way was Buzz Daley. Daley had 17 and 7, and also shot 100% from downtown.

The 4th game had another struggling team in 9-16 Cal Poly. In another close game, UC Davis pulled it off 73-67. The Aggies have now secured 1st place, with Santa Barbara being 3 games back, and in 2nd place. Longar Meyers once again had a great game dropping in 20 points to lead the way for the Aggies.

For the 5th game the Aggies had yet another struggling team in CS Fullerton. The Aggies took care of business as they should have. Demolishing Fullerton 88-75. Fransisco Loughton had one of the best game in his career. Scoring 19 points, 6 rebounds, and 8 assist coach was very pleased with his play.

The final game of the regular season had the Aggies facing CS Northridge. CS was 2 games under .500 but coach knew it would be tough. The Aggies did not let the pressure get to them however defeating CS by a score of 73-64. This was a team effort where all 5 starters scored in double figures.

Coach on finishing the season strong
We finished the season strong obviously. We went 21-7, and only lost one game in conference play. I think this team has what it takes to get to the NCAA tournament but we can't let down now. I want the team to stay confident, but not get cocky. I know that we still need to win the conference tourney to get into the NCAA, but it does feel good to have my first conference regular season title under my belt.

                      Aggies Stunned in first round

Anaheim,CA-The Aggies knew that it would be tough, but they did not see this coming. After going 21-7 in the regular season, and only losing one conference game it was set up perfectly for them. They thought they would get to go dancing. However, Cal Poly had different plans. They executed their game plan perfectly. Slow the game down, and force the Aggies to play defense. In one of the lowest scoring games of the year, the Aggies fell to Cal Poly 57-48. It's now how they wanted it to end. Meyers once again led the team with 12 points. Coach had a lot of good things to say about Meyers, saying "He was a great kid. A team leader on the court, and off. I know he is disappointed but he needs to keep his head up. We all know we won't be going dancing but we know we will be heading to the NIT since we won the regular season title." Stay tuned to see how the games go, and if Turner wants to stay or go.

                        Postseason in review

The UC Davis Aggies did get invited to the NIT. They got the lucky chance to go up against Boston University. The game was to be held at Boston's home court. This was the 4 vs the 5. However, it ended up looking like the 1 vs 8. The Aggies were also on the wrong end of the spectrum. They were absolutely crushed by Boston 88-41. Coach said "This is gonna kill some of our guys confidence. Others will not be affected by it. We had a great season and I hope that they know it." When he was asked if he would be taking another job he said, "I'm gonna be honest with you guys. I have to see what's out their. If a good offer comes along, I'm going to take it."

The NCAA Championship was won by the Louisville Cardinals. With 4 out of the 5 starters being above 90 overall, what do you expect. NC State Center Earv Sikes won player of the year honors. Longar Meyers also went out a winner, being selected to 1st team all conference. Coach said "He deserved it more than anyone. I'm glad for the kid." Small Forward Kenney Terry was also chosen to 2nd team all conference, coach said "I'm glad for Kenney. Although, he still has work to do as we all want to be in the NCAA tournament next season." Congrats to the Cardinals, and stay tuned to hear a big announcement from Coach Turner.

Coach Turner heads to Florida International

Miami,FL-Breaking news out of the basketball world. After a disappointing season for the Panthers, head coach Anthony Evans was fired. The new search for a brand new head coach began this offseason, and they have found their man. Ex-assistant of North Carolina, and former head coach of UC Davis Aggies, Ray Turner. Ray is 40-46 in his 3 year head coaching tenure. But last season he exceed expectations, going 21-8, and only losing one game in conference play. They did get an early boot from the conference tournament kicking them into the NIT. Ray excels at offense, and finding great recruits. Other reports are that Troy, Loyola, Boston University, and Murray State also offered him jobs. Coach's thoughts are listed below. Look for the Depth Chart and Schedule to be released sometime tonight.

I really like this team. Some other teams also gave me very intriguing offers, but I feel like God wants me to be a Panther. I hope we can have some success, and I'm glad I have the opportunity to coach here. I would also like to expand on our recruiting class. FIU already had both scholarships filled up for the upcoming year, and the 2 people they have signed are, 2 star SG Predrag Assel, and 1 Star C Aras McCray. I am looking forward to having both of them on the team next year.

                            Coach's thought on the schedule
I really like the schedule this year. We start off the year with a few games that we should win. I like the Auburn and Texas games, because they will boost our RPI. It will also give us a chance to go into some tough environments. Closing out the regular season, I love that the AD gave me the chance to go coach in UC Davis one last time. It will be an honor to be back. The conference looks pretty good this year, but I think we can contend.

Yep, I bailed. Recruiting class coming in wasn't real great. Meyers was graduating, and when I saw i could go to sun belt i did it. I was sad to see Buzz Daley go though. He was good.
