March 19, 2009: Radford vs. Michigan State

Michigan State moves on to the Round of 32 as they put a beatdown on Radford, 88-68.

Radford was led by Senior SG Aaron Dupre who scored 14 points on 5 of 7 shooting and a perfect 2 for 2 from behind the 3 point arc in his final collegiate game. Redshirt Senior SF T.J. Gouard also had a solid final game in a Highlander uniform. Gouard scored 10 points on 3 of 6 shooting and he shot 3 of 4 from the free throw line. Junior PG Fredrick Garnett finished with 10 points on 3 of 7 shooting... All 3 of his made baskets were 3 pointers.

Michigan State was led by Junior SF Brett Davidson who finished the game with a double double by scoring 24 points and grabbing 10 boards. Sophomore SG Ilian Carroto had a very efficient game shooting the ball, as he scored 13 points on 4 of 5 shooting from the field, including 2 of 3 from behind the 3 point arc. Sophomore SG Majak Laurelin came off the bench and had a solid all around game. The Sophomore finished with 13 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals. Redshirt Senior PF Muhamed McFarlin chipped in 10 points on 5 of 6 shooting from the floor.

Michigan State will move on to play #5 Kansas State in the Round of 32.

For Radford, they had a great season in year 2 of the Danny Carmichael era. The Highlanders finished the season 21-10 overall and 11-3 in Conference Play. This is the Highlander's first 20 season since the 1998-1999 squad won exactly 20 games. Now Coach Carmichael's next task should be securing another good recruiting class... If he can do that, don't be surprised if the Highlanders possibly make some national noise next year.

Sophomore SG Ryan Ariza Leaves Team

Radford, VA -- Sophomore Shooting Guard Ryan Ariza has been granted a release from the basketball team. Ariza stated he wanted to leave due to personal reasons.

Ariza averaged 2.4 points this past season and averaged just 6.2 minutes of playing time per game. Ariza was going to have an increased role on the team due to the graduation of Senior Shooting Guards Aaron Dupre and Dave Torbert.

With the departure of Ariza, Radford Coach Danny Carmichael now has 4 scholarships to fill in the Spring Signing Period, instead of the original 3.

                        2009 Recruiting Class

                        The wait is finally over!!

Coach Danny Carmichael could become one of the hottest coaching commodities in next years Coaching Carousel. He has taken a Radford program that went 8-22 back in 06-07 to 21-10 in just 2 years on the job. He has built up what was an overall bad roster into one of the best, if not the best in the Big South. And now, he could be considered as one of the best recruiters in the country.

Coach Carmichael has absolutely killed it on the recruiting trail. This 2009 Recruiting Class ranks as the #32 Class in the entire country, the #4 Mid-Major Recruiting Class, and of course, the #1 Recruiting Class in the Big South. This class consists of a 3* player at each position: C, PF, SF, SG, and PG and it would not surprise me one bit if 4 maybe even 5 of them started next season.

Here is the 5 players who make up this 2009 Radford Recruiting Class

Brandon Ray (157)#32 PFHSVirginia Beach, VA6'8203
                        Kenny Andrews (173)#42 SGHSQueens, NY6'2182
                        Emmett Bonner (196)#38 SFHSLafayette, IN6'4219
                        Cedrick Covington (353)#104 PGHSLynchburg, VA6'0179

3* Center Marquis Peterson headlines this recruiting class. Peterson is from El Paso, TX and is the #8 C in the Country and the #154 overall player in the country. Peterson's biggest strengths are his rebounding, low post offense, and athleticism. Don't be surprised if Peterson starts next year. :P

3* Power Forward Brandon Ray chose to stay home in Virginia and sign with the Highlanders. Ray is from Virginia Beach, VA and is the #32 PF in the country and the #157 overall player in the country. Ray's biggest strengths are his Mid range shooting, rebounding, and he's very quick for a 6'8 PF. Ray will be a big contributer next year, if not the starter over Cordell Darden.

Kenny Andrews is a 3* Shooting Guard from Queens, NY. Andrews is the #42 SG and the #173 Overall player in the 2009 class. Andrews is now the highest rated player to ever sign with Radford. Andrews' strengths are definitely his 3 point shooting, speed, and on ball defense. Andrews will battle with Sammy Coleman for the starting SG spot next year.

Emmett Bonner is a 3* Small Forward from Lafayette, IN. Bonner is the #38 SF in the country and #198 overall player in the country. Bonner's biggest strengths are his outside shooting, on ball defense, and his ability to score at the basket. Bonner will battle with Landon Snow for the starting SF spot next year.

3* Point Guard Cedrick Covington also chose to stay home in Virginia. Covington hails from Lynchburg, VA and is the #104 PG in the country and the #353 overall player in the country. Covington's biggest strengths are his speed, on ball defense, and ability to get to the basket. Covington may battle Fredrick Garnett for the starting PG spot next year.

                              No, I "only" have 4 starting. :P

The starting PG, Fredrick Garnett, is a Senior this year.

You win 21 games and win the championship, yet you don't get named Big South COY?

Congrats by the way, losing to MSU who made the Championship game was pretty much expected.

Very nice recruiting class. If you do stay at Radford, I can really see you guy's making some noise in the NCAA a couple years from now.

I am sorta surprised you didn't cut Cron to free up his scholarship a year earlier. I personally like to just run a 10 man rotation.
