On June 28th, 2005, Larry Brown would become the NBA's highest paid coach in NBA history as he signed a deal with the New York Knicks that was worth a reported $50 to $60 million.

Brown would follow up this monumental deal by leading the Knicks through one disastrous season, finishing with a 23-59 record. Coach Brown did not make it through one calendar year, as he was fired June 23rd, 2006.

      Blatt Back in the NBA

After what many thought was an unjust firing of David Blatt; he is back in the NBA just a few short months later. AT the time that Blatt was let go from The Cleveland Cavaliers he had his team with the second best record in the Eastern Conference & were fresh off of a Finals appearance. Blatt; best noted for his work overseas and ability to gameplan seemed a bit overwhelmed by the star power on the NBA level with LeBron & Cleveland. Well that should be a bit less of an issue now that long time confident Mikhail Prokhorov has brought Blatt in to coach the Brooklyn Nets. Blatt is set to begin basketball activities on July 1st and was inked to a 4-year deal for an undisclosed amount.

        Rest in peace, Len Bias

We're heading toward the start of the 2016-17 season. What that holds in store for us is yet to be seen; in fact, the only thing we know for the upcoming season is one of the greatest mysteries year-round, that of newly drafted players taking their first steps on an NBA hardwood. Draft analysis is often a crapshoot, unfortunately, but in retrospect, they're clear as day. With that being said, let's take a look back at previous drafts in years ending in 6 (starting in 1976).

1976: This draft, kicked off by John Lucas (II), saw 4 Hall of Famers emerge: Adrian Dantley, selected 6th by the Buffalo Braves; Robert Parish, selected 8th by the Golden State Warriors; Alex English, selected 23rd overall, in the second round, by Milwaukee; and Dennis Johnson, who went to the Seattle Supersonics at 29th overall. Parish is indubitably the best to come from this draft, having played the most games in NBA history (1,611), most notably for the Celtics. An interesting note, however, is that 1976 also saw a dispersal draft to move players from the ABA Spirits of St. Louis and Kentucky Colonels to the NBA. The 5th overall pick in that dispersal draft? Moses Malone, to the Portland Trail Blazers.

1986: A sad year for the NBA. Len Bias, drafted second overall by the Boston Celtics out of Maryland, died of a cardiac arrhythmia from a cocaine overdose the night after the draft. "During my years as an ACC coach, the two most dominant players we've faced were Michael Jordan and Len Bias," said Coach K—unfortunately, that is one of the greatest testaments to Bias' talent that remains. Drafted first overall in '86 was center Brad Daugherty, part of a very successful draft by the Cavaliers, who acquired 25th overall pick Mark Price on draft day. Another team with a great draft was the Portland Trail Blazers, who snagged internationals Arvydas Sabonis and the great Drazen Petrovic late in the draft. Dennis Rodman (Pistons) and Jeff Hornacek (Suns) were also picked this year.

1996: The 50th draft in NBA history, the 1996 draft is one of the best drafts in history. Starting with Allen Iverson, drafted first overall by the Philadelphia 76ers, the draft produced a horde of talented stars. The 1996 draft was so talented, in fact, that one of the greatest defensive players of all time, Ben Wallace, went undrafted. The draft included the Stephon MarburyRay Allen swap, Peja Stojakovic, Antoine Walker, and the great Steve Nash... who was picked outside of the lottery. Of course, no mention of this draft is complete without mentioning Kobe Bryant. I think we all know how that 13th pick turned out; the Lakers' renaissance and golden years coupled with the entombment of Charlotte basketball for the next 20 years.

2006: After discussing one of the greatest draft classes of all time, we now move to one of the worst classes ever. First pick? Andrea Bargnani; swing and a miss from the Raptors. Third pick? Adam Morrison; swing and a miss from Charlotte [that's two huge misses in two '6 drafts by Charlotte; they're relying on "third time's the charm"]. Only five successful players (i.e. not Rudy Gay) came out of this draft: LaMarcus Aldridge went second to Portland; Brandon Roy went 6th and was traded to Portland; Rajon Rondo was selected 21st and made his way to Boston; Kyle Lowry went 24th to Memphis; and Paul Millsap went 47th to Utah. Portland cleary used up all their luck in this draft, as next year's didn't go quite as well (see: Oden, Greg).

This is all just a trip down memory lane, of course. But it's interesting to look back through sports to see dynasties rise and fall, just as empires rise and fall; perhaps sports are just a cleaner, safer replay of history. What's more, history is always being written anew; let's see what this crop of '6 rookies will write in the history books.

          Bringing "D" To "The H"

On Novemebr 18th Rockets owner Leslie Alexander told ESPN.com's Calvin Watkins that assistant J.B. Bickerstaff would be the interim coach for the rest of the season and Daryl Morey suggested that if the Rockets didn't "win", changes would continue. Well today Houston announces Tom Thibodeaux as their new head coach. Thibodeaux was unceremoniously released from the Bulls in what seemed to be a perfect fit and remained unemployed for the entire 2015-2016 season. For the Rockets who struggled last season with defense and effort this seems to be a perfect. Never-the-less Thibs was signed to a 4-year 20 million dollar deal and is expected to deliver immediate results.

Tom Thibodeaux has already made a statement in Houston making remarks in a local interview stating that "ALL members of the team" will need to make defense their priority. "Even the stars".

Sources around the Chicago Bulls say that they will not be extending Pau Gasol an offer and they hope to re-sign Jokim Noah. The Bulls are also rumored to be interested in Blake Griffin & Dwyane Wade.

Lebron James has said that he will weigh the options to see what makes the best sense for his situation in Cleveland as well as the organization.

Celtics President Danny Ainge will match any offers for Kelly Olynyk & Evan Turner but are fully geared on clearing space and assets to make a major move.

The Atlanta Hawks are not expected to make an offer to Al Horford. Sources have said that they will look to acquire a true low-cost center and build around Schroder & Millsap while trying to acquire a "third piece".

Hassan Whiteside is expected to test free agency. The Rockets, Hawks & Mavericks have all been in talks with him over the past few days.

Mike Conely & Jeff Green are high priority for the Grizzlies this summer.

Charlotte hopes to keep it's nucleus together by retaining Jefferson, Lin & Marvin Williams.

The Utah Jazz plan on matching any offer for center Rudy Gobert. On the other hand they have said that they will see what the market asks for PG Trey Burke.

Could Lebron end up back in Miami? SimWorld's Blindside says it's a possibility. He also reports that LeBron is not happy with the teams' current makeup and more specifically, Kevin Love.

The Clippers have entered the fray in regard to teams that may take a shot at acquiring Kevin Durant. Doc Rivers says that they need to reposition themselves for a final run with Chris Paul.

Harrison Barnes will be a hot commodity in a few days. It has been said that the Warriors may be willing to deal if they feel that they might lose Barnes for nothing says Stephen A. Smith.

David Aldridge reports that Phil Jackson is close to chosing a new head coach and that returning to the sidelines is not an option for him. He also stated that if Blake Griffin were to become available, he would try to make a play for him to come to New York.

George Karl and the Kings have told Rajon Rondo that they see him as one of the centerpieces of their franchise going forward. Rondo is expected to be testing the market with free agency looming.

Sources in Cleveland are saying that the Cavs could be eying Al Horford if the bidding isn't too steep.

Utah wants to acquire Jeff Teague this offseason. They have said that they value his speed and attacking ability and state that this is the main area that they would like to improve. New York and Houston have also been rumored to be interested.

Ryan Anderson will be on a lot of people's radar but the Pelicans hope to keep him but are undecided on what his role would be on the team.

"Expect to see max contracts handed out to Andre Drummond, Kevin Durant, DeMar DeRozan & Bradley Beal in hopes of retention in small markets." - Brent Barry

Sekou Smith sees New Orleans as a real possibility for Victor Oladipo in free agency. Oladipo is not expected to be resigned by Orlando & the Pelicans are not expected to be retaining Eric Gordan.

"We will take care of Dirk and then we will figure out the rest." said Mark Cuban when asked obout this offseason's strategy after last year's distater.

"Indy has a lot of flexibility. Don't be surprised if you see major changes happen in a matter of days." - Bill Simmons.

Quality Minutes with Coach Tom Thibodeau
                by Mark Berman (twitter: @MarkBermanFox26)

Joining me today at the desk is the new head coach for your Houston Rockets, Tom Thibodeau! Thanks for taking a few minutes to speak with us, Coach.

Tom Thibodeau: Great to be here with you Mark. I think it's great to take a good first step with local media. *laughs*

MB: Alright, I see we're going to have a good time today. So let's get right to it. You're the new coach for the Rockets, what's the main thing we can all expect from the Thibodeau era?

TT: Well Mark, I think we all know that: I'm here to play defense. The Rockets have a phenomenal offensive team. This is a team that can hang with the Warriors offensively on a good night; but it seems where this team has lost games is when they are tasked with stopping a team's best weapons.

MB: That's very true. Some in town do take solace to the fact that we have been ousted from the playoffs by the eventual champion..

TT: Well trust me. I don't believe in consolation prizes in basketball, or in life. When we find ourselves against the champs next year, I assure you we will be in a defensive fight. ALL members of the team will make defense their number one priority. Even the stars. Better yet, especially the stars.

MB: That is quite a statement Coach. Do you feel you may get brushback from your players for changing the philosophy of the team?

TT: Well, I'll start by saying I believe in this team. James, Dwight, Capella, up and down the roster I see a team that can compete and WIN this league year after year. Like I said a second ago, we have such a great lineup that can score; both in this new style of shooting out the lights, but also the old fashioned way of passing and opening up the court for everyone to get involved.
Secondly, if a player is going to have a problem with playing defense, then I honestly have a bit of a problem with that player. This isn't the NFL where I can play my offense, and then the other team gets the ball and I'll put my defense out there. This game was conceived simply: I have the ball, I try to score. You have the ball, I try to stop you from scoring.

MB: So then, do you think JB Bickerstaff wasn't a good fit for this team to be able to keep the position permanently?

TT: Absolutely not. I am actually working very closely with JB right now as we transition, and if he wanted to, I'd love to keep him on this staff. I think JB did a great job of keeping this team together after the team fired Kevin McHale. A lesser coach would have taken the opportunity to let the team unravel, and accept they weren't going to succeed this year. This team STILL made the playoffs, and they did it because JB kept them together and putting them in situations where they could succeed.

MB: Hear, hear! To be fair though, some fans didn't want to make the playoffs to get a better draft out of this bungled season.

TT: And the team didn't even have a pick this year, so that shows where some fans' minds are. But seriously, I understand the fans' frustrations. This is a team that was basketball royalty throughout the early '90s, and got two titles to show for it during the Jordan era. They want to be completely relevant again, and not just perennial early playoff exits. This team, this city, they have a certain level of pride already built in. You know, I dealt with the same thing in Chicago obviously, and you would think the feeling would be less since we're talking about 2 vs 6 titles, but no, Houston is a proud basketball city. They are just as rabid for success as your Bulls, your Celtics, etc. These fans deserve to see their team be the best like they remember. But trust me when I say: worry about winning, and the rest will fall in place.

MB: Very wise, simple words Coach. Since you mentioned Chicago, I wanted to ask a very convoluted question before we get out here..

TT: Uh oh. Here we go.

MB: Haha no Coach, I wanted to ask: after your departure from Chicago, Jeff Van Gundy penned a terrific article basically shaming the Bulls for their decision. What was it like competing for this coaching position against your good friend?

TT: Oh wow, that was not what I was expecting. Thanks Mark. You know, you're right, me and Jeff are great friends, and while I didn't personally endorse his article, as a friend, it did make me feel good as a person. People always talk about the business of it all, and how you need to have zero emotions or ego to be able to succeed, etc. But the truth is, it does hurt and you do feel like you let everyone down. YOU did it. You aren't the contract the people see, you're the actual person behind it. And Jeff, you know, he's been there too, and he is in the media and is afforded the voice to say those words. So, when you get to have true friends in this business, or in any business, you stay true to them and keep being a good human being.
Now, having said that, it was very hard to compete for this position. Jeff told me he would be interested in coming back to coaching, then the word became he might return to Houston, and yes it was very nerve racking. He's a stellar coach and deserves the chance to coach any of these teams in the league. He's always going to be worth your time. All I'll really say is I'm glad they called me instead of him. *laughs*

MB: Alright Coach, well I'll let you go on that note. Thanks again for stopping in, and we are all looking forward to what our Houston Rockets will do in 2016-2017.

TT: Indeed. The work starts now. Thanks for having me Mark.

                  "Massachusett's Love"

Last night The Celtics, Cavs & Mavs pulled off a daring 3-team trade that was centered around Kevin Love. Boston who had 7 picks in this past draft, sent draftees Tavaris Leggett, DeAndre Hollis, Calvin Drayton in return for the Mavs 1st round pick. They also sent their 2018 1st round pick (from Brooklyn), a future 1st round pick (unprotected) & R.J. Hunter as well as Branden Dawson from Dallas to Cleveland in return for Kevin Love. The Celtics and Ainge had been rumored to be interested in Kevin Love since late last season. Ainge has already went on record saying "We plan to properly utilize Love's talents here in Boston & make him the centerpiece that he should be."

Social Media Wars: No Love over Cleveland

Thanks for tuning in, folks. We are going live to the battlefield that opened up on twitter in the last 24 hours. It all started so innocuously, as these things tend to, on July 20th when it was reported that Kevin Love would be headed to the Boston Celtics:

At first, things were going OK, with now former teammates exchanging pleasantries:

As well as new teammates welcoming the talented forward to Boston:

But then, just like Obi-Wan Kenobi sitting in the Millenium Falcon, we felt the disturbance in the Force. It was as if one single shot had shattered the entire NBA world:
                      Winter is coming…
                      No, please, just stop!

And THAT is when, as they say on the street, ish got real:

LeBron tried to get out of the way once he caught up with the rest of us with this conciliatory tweet:

But Kevin Love was not done and made sure to leave us all thirsty for the NBA season to start:

Scorched Earth. Fatality! Kevin Love wins this round. We cannot wait for the NBA schedules to come out.
