Matt Winer: So the murmurs out of Oklahoma City are getting louder and louder. A few weeks ago Marc Stein reported that Kevin Durant & Russell Westbrook were not able to see eye to eye. The arguments were so heated that they even got to the point where Durant told Westbrook that the ball should’ve been through him late in games and that is why the Thunder don’t have a ring now. Dennis; with free agency right around the corner and the speculation that Kevin Durant is at least interested in playing for the Washington Wizards; where does this put the Thunder.

Dennis Scott: Well I think it puts them in a really bad spot. Me & Brent were talking off air a bit about this & look… this has been one of the best teams in the NBA over the past few years. But with Durant missing time allowing Russ to take over & then Russ missing time a year back & Durant getting to lead; we forgot how there were issues with just WHO the leader of this team was.

Brent Barry: And to extend a bit on what 3D is saying; people are also forgetting that Westbrook is on an option as well this year. Albeit a team option; this team has some real decisions to make. They’re not a big market team and getting a star to come here to keep up the level of play that this team has achieved is gonna be hard to do without Durant on this team.

Matt Winer: Very true. Durant rumored to be courted by Washington, Chicago and Portland over recent weeks.

Brent Barry: And keep in mind that the Thunder don’t have much cap space. If these guys can’t hammer it out; they may have to over pay one of these guys just to get a commitment and keep at least one of them.

Dennis Scott: Over pay?! For 2 of the top 5 basketball players on the planet?!

Matt Winer: Hahaha… I don’t know what that amount...

Brent Barry: Relative. Relatively overpay. I’m just saying that there is a possibility that if they are forced to choose one of them. And that one is Durant. They COULD be in danger of losing them both.

Matt Winer: True JB. They may definitely have to clear some cap space to figure this thing out. Would hate to see such a great organization and top notch fans lose their two top guys.
Dennis Scott: Two of the NBA’s top guys!

    Brent Barry: Arguably the best.

Matt Winer: That’s another argument for another day. When we return… Can Che` King, a rookie coach and a team loaded with players under 25 take a step out of the cellar? We’ll talk former Sixer Tyrone Hill who will be training with the Sixer big men this summer.

One Team, One Goal: The Detroit Pistons Just Want To Win

There are more than a few engines revving in MoTown. The Pistons, for one. The same Pistons who notched the franchise's first 50-plus win season since 2008. The same Pistons who are led by a dominant center and a swift, fiery point guard. The same Pistons with steady shooting on the wings and a brash rookie coming off the bench at small forward. The same Pistons who are known as a defense-first team, and a team which logged the third-best points allowed margin in the league.

You see where I going. Ok, ok, the 1988-89 Pistons finished second in points allowed. But other than that, the parallels are quite intriguing. While this year's Pistons didn't win the title, they did play far better than the previous season and went deep into the playoffs—most of all, they looked like they belonged, rather than just being cannon fodder for a better team on the way to the conference finals. These Pistons reclaimed the home advantage that 1988's move to The Palace had secured the team; this iteration went 31-10 at home, tied for best in the Eastern Conference. The team is happy to use this conference semi-final as a learning experience; they know they're just getting started. The Pistons aren't yet firing on all cylinders.

"It's not fun to go out, obviously," said Reggie Jackson upon the Pistons elimination in Game 6 of round 2 at the hands of the second-seeded Toronto Raptors. "But we know we played tough all year and that's an achievement, so we're just gonna build from there on out." He's quite right. He's only 26. Andre Drummond, who led the league in rebounding and finished second in blocks per game, is 23 (happy birthday, big fella). Kentavious Caldwell-Pope? 23. Tobias Harris, by metrics the best LeBron stopper in the NBA, is just 24. Stanley Johnson, the aforementioned brash rookie, is primed for a breakout season. The Pistons have a young, cheap core; there's plenty of depth, too, as the Pistons nabbed two solid bench players in this past draft.

It's not an easy road in the Eastern Conference anymore. There are four championship-caliber teams: Cleveland, Toronto, and now Boston and Detroit. That competition adds to revenues for the league, and, hopefully, for the city of Detroit. The Pistons have suffered the largest loss of attendance of any team in the past ten years: attendance has declined 30%, lowering it to below 70% of stadium capacity. It can be argued that the decline in the Pistons' fortunes (peaking in 2004-05 with a title) mirrors the decline in the city's prosperity. While the Pistons home games are in Auburn Hills, a suburb of the city, the bulk of fans come from Detroit. And, as anyone can tell you, it's not easy to go to games while looking for work. While attendance has climbed since the nadir of 2011-2012, it's still far from the zenith of 2004-05.

"We try to do what we can, you know. Everyone does what they can," says Stan van Gundy. "It's not easy, but we do what we can." And what the Pistons can, and do, is win games. They started doing it last year—no one will scoff at a 52 win season. But there's more to do, more than can be done. The Pistons are a deep team, a focused team, a determined team. "We know what we're capable of, and we want to go out and do that," says Drummond. Are he, Caldwell-Pope, and Jackson, the new incarnation of Laimbeer, Dumars, and Thomas? To them, it doesn't matter: "While we respect this franchise's history... the only thing we care about is rings."

The Pistons might be visiting a jeweller sooner than you think.

Summer League Recap: Watch Me Work!

After a interesting 2016 NBA Draft it was time for the NBA Summer League to begin. All of your favorite NBA teams had their summer rosters ready to go consisting of a mix of rookies, second year players, and unsigned free agents. Mostly everyone's eyes was on Philadelphia 76ers' duo Che' King and Rayshaud Hill, Milwaukee Bucks' Laqua Palmer, and Washington Wizards' Jabbar Wilson, well of course these are the Top 5 selections in the Draft. The Summer League is split into 2 Leagues; Orlando and Las Vegas. Both leagues showcased some players with what looks to be good potential from rookies, second year players, and the surprise unsigned free agents.

Lets start with the Orlando Summer League where there were some surprises throughout the League. Like surprise appearances from Sim Bhullar (a favorite of mine), Tyrus Thomas, Greg Oden, and Nate Robinson. Where have they been all this time? However, only Bhullar and Lil' Nate really stuck out but is it enough to get back on an NBA team. There were a lot of notable games that stuck out like Miami vs Golden State which Miami won 96-92, Kings vs Grizzlies which Grizzlies won 101-99, and the Orlando Summer League Championship Game between the Toronto Raptors and the Indiana Pacers. The Raptors was crowned Orlando Summer League Champs after defeating Indiana 109-97 naming rookie Rashad Davdson Player of the Game stuffing the stat sheet with 28 points, 12 rebounds, and 2 blocks. Robinson was also crowned MVP of the Orlando Summer League averaging 17.3 PPG, 9 RPG, 2 BPG leading the Orlando Summer League in points and blocks per game. Congrats to the 13th overall pick. Other notables are Grizzlies' Trevor Booker (16.2 PPG, 8.2 RPG, 1.2 BPG), Kings' Kevin Seraphin (15.7 PPG, 6.5 RPG, 3.0 APG) and Pelicans' Myers Leonard (14.2 PPG, 8.4 RPG).

Now the Las Vegas Summer League where usually all the suspense and excitement happens. To no one's surprise it delivered. The biggest surprise is how Nick Donato led the Denver Nuggets to the Summer League Championship also claiming the Las Vegas Summer League MVP award. This 2nd rounder who was drafted by the Orlando Magic but wasn't signed averaged 21.3 PPG, 4.4 APG, and 1.3 SPG with the Nuggets' summer team. Possible mistake made by the Magic? Anywho, a one of the highlights of the Las Vegas Summer League was the surprise play from Anthony Bennett who averaged 16 PPG and 7.8 RPG with the Knicks. Someone better give this guy another chance at redeeming himself. Other highlights of the Las Vegas Summer League was surprise appearances from Michael Beasley, Hasheem Thabeet, and Sasha Vujacic. Also, games like 76ers vs Celtics where Che' King led Philly to a 102-101 with a 30 point outing, Nuggets vs Bucks which Nuggets won 112-95 with Donato putting up 23 points and 9 assists, and finally the Las Vegas Summer League Championship Game between the Nuggets and the Celtics which Nuggets won 62-61 in a hard fought defensive battle.

With that being said some players played as expected, some players surprisingly played well, and some players just did not make any noise. I have to say the way Rashad Davidson played is the biggest surprised for me and just for all those fans of the #1 overall selection Che' King he averaged 16 PPG, 2.6 RPG, and 2.4 APG which was a solid showing. Until next time thank you for reading The Private Vice Segment.

The Kobe-less Lakers made the biggest splash of the summer, signing a disgruntled Russell Westbrook from the Thunder to a 3-year $83.74 deal. The Lakers then traded D’Angelo Russell, Louis Williams & Brandon Bass to the new look Philadelphia for the 76ers’ #5 & #25 picks (Rayshaud Hill & JaDamion Deveaux) as well as T.J. McConnell. Then finalized the summer by exercising Julius Randle’s team option, inking O.J. Mayo & Ian Mahinmi while locking in Jordan Clarkson for another 4 years.

Dwight Howard declined his player option with Houston as expected & signed a 3-yr/$65 million contract with Atlanta despite a hard push from Cuban & the Mavs. Atlanta let Jeff Teague walk (NY 4-yr/$65 million) and Al Horford sign with Indiana (3-yr/$63 mil) to make room while accepting Dennis Schroder’s team option.

The NBA Champion Golden State Warriors keep their future intact by re-signing Draymond Green for 3 more years at $10 per year, re-signing Harrison Barnes for 4 years at $9 million a year, re-signing Festus Ezeli, Marreese Speights & Shaun Livingston to multi-year bargain contracts with none of them making more than $3.5 a year and adding Jamal Crawford on a veteran’s minimum.

The Sixers after moving their top picks from this year’s draft for D’Angelo Russell & Lou William, let Embiid walk and picked up Hollis Thompson & Robert Covington’s team options but their big move was moving Nick Young (LAC), Kendall Marshall (LAC) & multiple future 1st rd picks in a 3-team trade to acquire Rudy Gay & Devin Harris. Philly also picked up Nene’ for a mere $5 million for 2 years.

King James waited it out but ultimately signed another 1 year deal with Cleveland (the largest ever at $35 million), this time with a team option. The Cavs also signed Ilyasova to 1-yr deal after unsuccessfully courting Ryan Anderson.

Pau Gasol declined his player option with the Bulls and Chicago was unable to re-sign Noah who signed with the Miami Heat. Chicago did pick up Nikola Pekovic for 2 years at $12 mil a year, signed Kevin Martin to a multi-year deal & retained McDermott’s team option.

Oklahoma City used the cap space left from Westbrook’s departure by signing Pau Gasol to a 2-year contract worth $26 million and signing Victor Oladipo to a 4-year deal at $10 million a year. OKC also re-signed Dion Waiters to a 3-year deal.

Doc & the Clips managed to re-sign Blake Griffin to a 4-yr deal at $28 mil per even amidst the rumors that Blake wanted to go to New York. According to David Aldridge, New York did not have the cap space and LA could not put together a sign-and-trade scenario that New York could manage. LAC also watched Doc’s son (Austin Rivers) & Cole Aldrich exercise their player options.

Boston declined Amir Johnson’s $12 million team option as they had to make room for Kevin Love. But they did manage to re-sign Evan Turner for 3 years, Jae Crowder for 4 years as well as Marcus Smart for 2 years. Oh & let’s not fail to mention that they picked up Tyson Chandler for 3 years/$39 million.

Miami re-signed Dwayne Wade for 5 more years at $22 mil per along with extending Josh Richardson and adding Joakim Noah for only $5 million a year for 2 years. The Heat also added Andray Blatche on a year deal.

The Kings re-signed Rajon Rondo to a 4-yr/$74 million contract after an arduous promise to the city of Sacramento (from owner Vivek Ranadivé) that they would not be moving the team anytime in the near future. The Kings also inked Luol Deng & Patrick Patterson to multi-year contracts.

After Mark Cuban’s “youth-inspired” trades, the Mavericks re-signed Dirk Nowitzki for 4-yr/$89 million, saw Chandler Parsons accept his player option & added Joe Johnson on a 1-yr deal.

Brooklyn; deeply in need of a revamp, signed Brandon Jennings to a 3-yr deal worth $38 mil, Marvin Williams to a 3-yr deal worth $26 mil, Amir Johnson on a 3-yr/$13 million deal, Courtney Lee on a 3-yr/$14 million contract, Roy Hibbert on 1 year deal & brought back Marshon Brooks on a 2-yr deal for good measure.

Stan Van Gundy re-signs Andre Drummond to a 4-yr/$93 million contract, gets his man that he had been targeting all season, Ryan Anderson for 3 years/$33 mil and adds Deron Williams on a 1-yr deal not to mention exercising their team option on Caldwell-Pope

Detroit, Atlanta & Denver all made their interest in DeRozan known but DeMar Derozan re-signed with the Raptors for 4 years, $109 million.

The Griz re-signed Mike Conely for another bargain 3yr/$55 million deal and extended Jeff Green while signing Taj Gibson and Eric Gordon on bargain deals as well.

Milwaukee’s big moves consisted of picking up Antetokounmpo & Jabari Parkers team options, re-signing MCW & Middleton and taking a shot on Joel Embiid who was declined by the Sixers for 2 years/$11 million.

Rudy Gobert re-signs with Utah for $10 million a year for 3 years. Utah also exercised Rodney Hood & Dante Exum’s team options & signed Ty Lawson to a 1 year deal.

The Rockets outbid Miami to sign Hassan Whiteside to a 3-yr/$39 million deal and finally bring Sergio Llull from overseas on a 3-yr deal.

Enes Kanter signed a 4-yr deal with the Suns worth $47 million. The Suns also signed Michael Beasley to a 2-yr deal.

Charlotte re-signed Al Jefferson & Jeremy Lin to multi-year deals and re-signed MKG to a 4-yr deal.

The Pelicans brought back Tyreke Evans for 3 more years at $12 million per.

The T’Wolves re-signed Ricky Rubio for another 3 years at $9 mil per & exercised Andrew Wiggins, Zach Lavine & Gorgui Dieng’s team options.

Portland re-signed C.J. McCollum for $40 million over 3 years.

Washington missed out on Kevin Durant but did ink Bradley Beal for the next 4 years on a contract worth $93 million. They also added Wilson Chandler on a 2-year deal and brought Larry Sanders back to the NBA on a 1-year trial contract.

The Big Ticket called it a career after spending 22-years in the Big Leagues, carving a place for himself in the Naismith Basketball Hall-of-Fame with his tough, gritty play and big mouth that frustrated opponents into defeating themselves.

After spending the first twelve years of his career with the Minnesota Timberwolves, earning nomintations for ten NBA All-Star games, three time All-NBA First Teamer, six time All-Defensive First Teamer and 2004 MVP, Kevin Garnett was traded to the Boston Celtics in order for the Timberwolves to "start fresh". The Timberwolves were in a downward spiral after trading away stars years before and had not made the playoffs for three straight years.

The Celtics on the other hand had plans to finally make it back to the NBA Championship after years of obscurity, acquiring stars Garnett and Ray Allen to piece together with superstar Paul Pierce to make that run for a Championship that all three deserved. It paid off in year one, beating the Los Angeles Lakers in the Finals and giving those three their first championships. After years of success, age caught up with the group and Garnett once again found himself on the end of a "fresh start" trade that saw him traded to the Brooklyn Nets with teammate Pierce, while Allen took himself to South Beach to team up with LeBron James.

Garnett never really seemed happy in Brooklyn, and after three tumulous year, waived his no-trade clause to head back to Minnesota in an effort to mentor the young team and bring together players like Ricky Rubio and Andrew Wiggins, and this past year future star Karl Anthony-Towns.

Even had he not gone to Boston and won a championship, Garnett was "quietly" considered an all-time great and was a shoe-in to be a first-ballot Hall-of-Famer, championship or no championship. He finished his career with the following statistics:

One thing he will never forget, though.. and a person he will probably miss. His very own superfan, John Sweeney, AKA Jiggly Boy.
