        Nevada Hires Rob Royal

The Wolf Pack have found their new alpha male with the signing of former UC Riverside head coach Rob Royal, who becomes the 14th head coach in program history.

He replaces Mark Fox, who decided to retire following Nevada’s first round exit in the NCAA Tournament. Fox coached the Wolf Pack for seven seasons, accumulating a 182-72 record with 5 trips to the big dance.

With the unexpected retirements of Syracuse’s Jim Boeheim and Duke’s Coach K, Royal’s name came up in many rumors, but in the end it was the Wolf Pack that would land the 35-year old coach.

Royal takes over a Nevada team that is coming off an impressive 24-7 season which resulted in a WAC Regular season championship, and a 5 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

Nevada is losing their top two scorers to graduation but are reloading as they hauled in the #17 recruiting class in the country, featuring two top 100 prospects.

The Wolf Pack added 4* PG Vinnie Adeife (#53 OVR, #25 PG), 4* PG Christian Abdur-Rahim (#77 OVR, #33 PG), and 3* PG Cameron Roberts (#146 OVR, #54 PG) who will all make an immediate impact off the bench as true freshmen.

            GAME 1 - 11/9/12
IPFW MASTADONS @ NEVADA WOLF PACK

The Nevada Wolf Pack kicked off the 2012 season and the Rob Royal era with a convincing 69-45 win over the Mastadons of Purdue Fort Wayne on Friday night.

IPFW kept it close early on before crumbling in the second half, as Nevada would go on a 15-0 run to break the game wide open.

Leading the way for the Wolf Pack was sophomore point guard Lloyd Agbai who scored 10 of his game-high 15 points in the second period. Edward Fox scored 11 points while Dannorriss Scott added 10.

True Freshmen guards Christian Abdur-Rahim and Vinnie Adeife each scored 8 points off the bench in their collegiate debut.

“We went out there and executed our game plan to perfection,” said head coach Rob Royal. “It feels good to get that first win out of the way, and hopefully we can build off of this one.”

The Wolf Pack take on Montana State on a Saturday evening on the second half of a back-to-back.

              GAME 2 - 11/10/12
NEVADA WOLF PACK @ MONTANA STATE BOBCATS

The Wolf Pack improved to 2-0 on the season with another impressive showing, defeating the Montana State Bobcats 88-72 on Saturday night.

Nevada used a balanced attack to get the win, with four of their starters reaching double digits in points. Edward Fox, Dannorriss Scott, and Daron Williamson each added 10, while true freshman Christian Abdur-Rahim scores a career-high 11 off the bench.

Montana State came into the game feeling confident and used that to take an early 12-point lead. However, Nevada battled back and made it just a one point game heading into the half, then outscored the Bobcats 51-34 in the second period.

The Bobcats were mostly a one-man show, led by center Kendaris Fazekas. The 6’11” senior finished with 25 points on an efficient 9-of-13 shooting.

Nevada has the next week off before taking on Tennessee Tech.

                RECRUITING UPDATE

Nevada is in the hunt for two prospects to fill their two available scholarships, 4* Antwan Hart and 3* L.L. Meno.

Hart, out of Portland, Oregon would be a huge get for the Wolf Pack. Named Mr. Basketball for the state of Oregon, the 6’8” small forward (#39 overall, #2 SF) excels at attacking the rim and can score from anywhere on the court. Nevada is currently second on his list, behind hometown favorite Oregon and ahead of Stanford and Washington State.

Meno, of Oakland, California is the number 404 overall prospect and 59th best power forward. He stands at 6’7” and currently has Nevada second on his list behind Saint Mary’s.

                        GAME 6 - 12/1/12
NEVADA WOLF PACK @ PEPPERDINE WAVES

The Nevada Wolf Pack bounced back from their first loss of the season with a dominating 66-45 win over Pepperdine on Saturday afternoon.

They were led by junior guard Dannorriss Scott who finished with 19 points and 6 rebounds on 7-of-10 shooting. Lloyd Agbai scores 12 and Christian Abdur-Rahim added 8 off the bench.

The Wolf Pack used a 16-2 run in the second half to build on their 7-point halftime lead. They continued to dominate on the defensive end, holding the Waves to 25% shooting from the field and are now 4-0 when allowing 50 points or less.

                        RECRUITING UPDATE

With the early signing period opening up, the Wolf Pack received good and bad news. The bad news is that 3* power forward L.L. Meno has committed to Saint Mary’s.

The good news is that 4* Antwan Hart, the #2 SF of his class, has dropped Oregon from his top schools, making Nevada his clear favorite.

                          GAME 7 - 12/5/12
NEVADA WOLF PACK @ UNLV RUNNIN REBELS

The UNLV Runnin Rebels handed Nevada their second loss of the season, with a close 58-54 win at the Thomas and Mack Center. UNLV has now won 7 straight against their in state rivals, with Nevada’s last win over UNLV coming in the 2005-06 season.

The Rebels were carried by senior guards Renato Jennings and Ashley Kane. Jennings finished with 23 points, 6 steals, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists, while Ashley Kane added 19 points and 8 rebounds. They were the only two starters to score in the game, as their bench combined for their teams other 16 points.

The Wolf Pack kept it close for majority of the game and found themselves down by only two with a chance to tie the game with 10 seconds left. However, Daron Williamson’s shot attempt was blocked and Jennings came away with the rebound then nailed his two free throws to ice the win.

                            GAME 8 - 12/8/12
NEVADA WOLF PACK @ NJIT HIGHLANDERS

The Wolf Pack traveled to New Jersey to take on the New Jersey Institute of Technology and came away with an absolutely dominating 65-29 win to improve to 6-2 on the year.

Nevada put on a show on the defensive end, only allowing 8 total field goals made and a season low 29 points allowed. 10 of the Highlanders’ points came from the free throw line, on a night where they shot just 20% from the field.

It was a balanced effort for the Wolf Pack with center Leo Winter leading the way with 13 points. Dannorriss Scott scored 12, Edward Fox scored 11 and Daron Williamson added 10.

                              GAME 9 - 12/15/12
MISSISSIPPI VALLEY STATE DELTA DEVILS @ NEVADA WOLF PACK

The winless Delta Devils came to Reno hoping for their first win of the season, but they would be denied as Nevada came away with a 63-51 victory on Saturday afternoon. The win improves Nevada to 6-2 while MVSU falls to 0-7.

Nevada was led by the duo of Edward Fox and Daron Williamson, who each scored 13 points for the Wolf Pack.

Mississippi Valley State put up a bigger fight than expected, leading in the first half before Nevada would go on a run to take the lead into the half.

A 10-2 run in the second half sparked by back to back three pointers by Dannorriss Scott was enough to pull away.

The Wolf Pack opened the game on a 15-0 run and were never threatened. Their full court press forced Chicago State into 14 turnovers in the game.
