Wow, Lakers are done -- LeBron can't carry them all the way to the title without some help and there's no one else on that team that can step up really.

Surprised Cleveland put up the fight they did. I think Toronto has Philly's number, so I'm going with them in 6. Don't disagree with any other picks.
    Any comments are welcome.

Yeah, LeBron had an MVP season, but this will be tough without his sidekick. I'm looking at the records and performances across the league and I think that Cleveland's head coach may deserve an extension. The Cavs were really quite good all year long.

I've simmed this round (update on it tomorrow) but there was 1 real shocking result. I had to do a double-take when simming, but then saw there was a key injury 2 minutes into the first game that sort of made the series outcome a foregone conclusion

        Recruiting Update

We’re halfway through the offseason signing period, and all of the top prospects have committed their futures to a school, with these 8 players being the ones to sign in this period:
        • #2 Marcello Barber, PF, Houston, TX – Texas’ Mr. Basketball signed with Duke over Ohio State and in-state Texas.
        • #3 Roland Mayes, PG, San Diego, CA – The #2 PG chose Arizona after the top prospect chose UCLA.
        • #11 V.J. Andres, SF, Albuquerque, NM – He is coming in to fill the big shoes of Ernesto Parkinson at Kansas, who is projected to go first overall in the draft.
        • #13 Duane Parker, SG, St. Louis, MO – Parker chose Illinois over Marquette and KU.
        • #14 Reid Ziri, C, Vancouver, Canada – The coveted international big man chose Oregon over several other Pacific Northwest schools including Washington and Gonzaga.
        • #15 Britton Wainright, SG, McAllen, TX – McAllen left the shadow of the US-Mexico border to play college ball for the Florida Gators. Mississippi State and several Texas schools were left disappointed.
        • #18 Paul Clifton, SG, Huntington Beach, CA – Clifton heads up the coast to California, choosing them over several other Pac 10 schools.
        • #20 Dan Diaz, PG, Phoenix, AZ – Diaz stayed in-state to play for the Sun Devils of Arizona State.

        Northern Colorado Recruiting Update
Coming into the window, Oggy had 3 scholarships to hand out, and had offered them up.
        1. SG Edward Burke – The 3-star shooter from California was leaning to Pepperdine, but they haven’t offered him a scholarship yet, so Oggy had some hope.
        2. C Garrett Guerrero – The big man was rated at 3 stars and was from Longmont, just North of Denver. Unfortunately for Oggy, he was leaning toward Denver University and had a scholarship offer from them.
        3. SG Jim Flores – It’s a tight race for the 6’6” shooting guard, and the 2-star recruit was leaning toward staying at home and attending UTSA.

He was trailing in all three prospects, but he hoped that his recent good tournament run would sway opinions and assuage any concerns the players had about the quality of his coaching.

Unfortunately, Oggy lost all 3 players in the first week. Additionally, a few more players on his big board chose to sign elsewhere, including Owen Del Rosario (UW-Milwaukee), Jonathan Kennedy (UL-Calcutta), and Markus Outlaw (Western Illinois).

With 4 weeks left in the signing period, Oggy is going to need to scramble to get some players in. He immediately turned around and offered scholarships to 3 players:
        1. C Taron Guy – a 6’10”, 2-star center from Omaha.
        2. SG Jesse Taybron – JuCo sophomore from Indianapolis.
        3. C Aldrin Parkinson – A 3 star 6’11” recruit that seems to have been ignored so far

In the next 2 weeks, Oggy got a piece of good news and bad news. The bad news: Jesse Taybron chose to sign with Southern Illinois. The good news? He got Taron Guy.

With 2 weeks left in the recruiting period, Oggy needed to sign 2 players. He had an offer out to Parkinson and went hunting for a shooter. He found one in Dennis Galindo, a 6’2” shooting guard from Puerto Rico. Galindo’s only other shooter? Oggy’s brother, Dinko.

        St. Francis Recruiting Update
Dinko only had 1 recruit, and with his whole team coming back he wanted to get someone who could help them take the next step to conference champions. To him, that looked like size, and that size was Ruandy Mencio. He likes St. Francis, but the Red Flash were on the verge of losing him to Alcorn State or Florida A&M when the recruiting period started.

Unfortunately for Dinko, the beginning of the offseason recruiting period was painful. First, he lost Ruandy Mencio to Alcorn State, then he lost his next choice, Haron Hill, to Radford. In his list of options, Brett Halsell also signed with Winston-Salem State.

After that first week, Dinko turned to big man Andre Moreno, hoping the 7’2” center from Detroit would head to Western Pennsylvania for his college years. Unfortunately, Moreno decided he’d rather head to Wright State to play ball.

With 2 weeks left, Kostadin got desperate – he went overseas. 6’10” Lithuanian PF Donatas Ritter was available and had no offers from any American colleges, but there may be a reason nobody has recruited him so far.

2020 NBA Playoffs Round 2 Update

The 2nd round is complete, and we have 1 vs 2 matchups on each side and we’re probably looking at a real “changing of the guard” moment with our finals champion this year.

Dallas Mavericks (4) vs Los Angeles Clippers (0)
This was a masterful performance from the young Mavericks. Luka Doncic had 3 triple-doubles in 4 games, including a 45 point, 11 rebound, 12 assist, and 4 steal performance in the clinching game 4 victory. However, the fate of the series may have been decided just 2 minutes into game 1 as Paul George landed awkwardly and tore his left MCL.

Milwaukee Bucks (4) vs Boston Celtics (0)
The Bucks truly had a team performance as exactly three players scored 20+ points in each game, and it wasn’t just Giannis, Bledsoe, and Middleton, as George Hill, Clint Capela, and Wesley Matthews pitched in. Through 2 series, the Bucks haven’t lost and don’t seem to be missing DiVincenzo.

          Philadelphia 76ers (4) vs Toronto Raptors (2)
Young talent won out as Philly took a 3-0 series lead and never let Pascal Siakam score more than 13 points in the series. Toronto lacked creativity and often had to rely on Marc Gasol and Serge Ibaka for their points. Philly has to feel great about avenging this loss and is looking forward to their showdown with Giannis.

Los Angeles Lakers (4) vs Houston Rockets (2)
LeBron stepped up in a big way. He scored 41 points in an overtime game 1 victory, and after the Lakers found themselves down 2-1 he scored 30+ points in each of the final 3 games to close it out. James Harden had a bad series by his standards, fouling out with only 18 minutes of playing time in game 2 and scoring 20 or less points in three of the six games.

          Preview of Conference Finals
This series was very evenly matched in the regular season as both teams won 2 games. Philadelphia will have no problem matching up with Milwaukee’s length, though the Bucks look like the hotter team right now, as they are 8-0 in the playoffs. Prediction: Bucks in 6.

Just like the Bucks, the Mavericks are 8-0 in these playoffs. Luka Doncic and Kristaps Porzingis have been unstoppable inside-outside machines. In the regular season, these two teams went 2-2, and that was with Anthony Davis playing for the Lakers. Prediction: Mavericks in 6.

            Recruiting Results

The offseason recruiting period is over, and it was a weird one for the Dragomirov brothers. Despite their different situations and different approaches, both brothers ended up in a weird spot: most of their scholarships went unused.*

Both brothers spent the last two weeks calling any and every recruit they could get a lead on. After Taron Guy signed, Oggy went after big man Aldrin Parkinson and Puerto Rican shooting guard Dennis Galindo. Dinko was using his Eastern European connection to try to sweet-talk Lithuanian PF Donatas Ritter.

However, both brothers were left disappointed as signing day came and went and none of their players signed and they found themselves with 3 combined unsigned scholarships. How could this have happened? Galindo fell through at the list minute due to undiscovered academic concerns and is headed to a community college in Florida. Parkinson simply went AWOL at the last minute and seems to have been swallowed up by the streets of the North Bay. For Ritter, it was something outside of his control: he couldn’t get a visa.

Both brothers will have access to their scholarships next season, but that doesn’t help them this season, though it will teach them a valuable lesson about ensuring they use their scholarships on players they know will sign. It was a bitter disappointment for Oggy as he was looking to find the long-term replacements for Donovin Mascoll and Delvon Jahnke, and will now need heavily rely on Andres Swanson, Randy Alvarez, and Brandon North for this season as the team has very little depth.

*note: In all my years of playing CHoops 2K8, I have never experienced this. I always used my scholarships and it’s very strange that players that had no other offers just straight up didn’t accept any scholarships. I’m not too upset, it adds to the flavor of the story.

Here’s where the top 20 recruits ended up. Duke was the big winner, with 3 of the top 8 prospects.

              Season 1 Survey

The college offseason is wrapped up and we’re preparing for the next season. As readers of this dynasty, what do you think of each brother? Who do you think will be more successful?

I’ve created a relatively simple 7 question survey that I’d love for anyone who reads this to fill out. Your responses will inspire things that may happen in this story, or drive "media coverage" of the brothers.

2020 NBA Playoffs Conference Finals Update

The 2020 NBA Finals matchups are all set

                Milwaukee Bucks (4) vs Philadelphia 76ers (0)
The Milwaukee Bucks continue the best post-season run in years as they are 12-0 and easily dispatched the 76ers. The Bucks won games by 16, 13, 30, and 14 points and got contributions from players up and down the roster. Philadelphia could not slow down Milwaukee’s offense or get points of their own.

Dallas Mavericks (4) vs Los Angeles Lakers (2)
LeBron James scored 58 points in game 1 as the Lakers won 138-107 but Dallas took 4 of the next 5 and Luka and Kristaps took turns being the closer for their team. Luka Doncic scored 42 points and nabbed a triple-double in a 29 point game 5 victory and Kristaps Porzingis scored 41 points in the 16-point game 6 win.

                NBA Finals Preview
Adam Silver is getting a preview of what his next decade may look like as a trio of young stars feature in this year’s NBA finals. “Best living player” Giannis Antetokounmpo faces off against fellow unicorn Kristaps Porzingis and the “millennial Larry Bird” in Luka Doncic. These two teams were consistent all year long and went 1-1 in their matchups this season. Milwaukee seems to be a deeper team and the trio of Capela and the Lopez brothers will probably make life tough on Porzingis just like they have for all the other big men in the playoffs this year. Can Luka handle all the pressure that will probably fall on him? The rotation of great defenders in Matthews, Bledsoe, and Middleton he will have to face? Can Milwaukee go 16-0? Prediction: Bucks in 6.

                  2020 NBA Finals Recap

Coach Bud, Giannis, and his supporting cast got the monkey off their back and showed they belong in the conversation with he best teams this century. After a good regular season, they went 16-1 in the playoffs and dominated everyone they came up against, including rising stars Jayson Tatum, Joel Embiid, Ben Simmons, Kristaps Porzingis, and Luka Doncic.

The Bucks were up 3-0 after winning game 3 by 33 points and causing Kristaps Porzingis to foul out twice in the first three games. Dallas won a consolation game after 4 to avoid the sweep (and a 16-0 playoffs for Milwaukee), but Giannis scored 37 and Middleton scored 33 in game 5 to seal the championship in Milwaukee.

Kristaps Porzingis stuffed the stat sheet and Luka Doncic did OK (but struggled to score), but the Bucks’ team effort and defense is what won the series. If you compare the 2 All-Stars from each team, you can see that the Mavs’ stars did better on paper.

NBA Coaching Changes and Player Retirements

As we wrap up the finals, we’ve started to see some staff changes around the league.

There was only 1 retirement, but it was a big one: Gregg Popovich has retired after 31 years as a coach in the NBA. The Spurs missed the playoffs for the first time in decades and will struggle to fill his shoes.

                      Fired/Not Renewed
                      • Nate McMillian, Pacers – After a very disappointing season that saw the Pacers finish 10 games below .500 and get swept in round 1, Indiana decided to go a different direction, firing Nate McMillan.
                      • Ryan Saunders, Timberwolves – The young coach’s contract expired and was not renewed as ownership felt they could get someone more talented.

                      On the Hot Seat
                      • Erik Spoelstra, Heat – This is a bit of a weird one as Spoelstra is a great coach, but the Heat haven’t done much in a few years and really disappointed this year. He’ll be expected to do a lot more next season.
                      • Quin Snyder, Jazz – The Jazz rebounded after a rough start to the season but made little impact in the playoffs. He should be fine as long as the team can be more consistent and show improvements next year.
                      • Luke Walton, Kings – Sure, the Kings are garbage, but they need to get better. Walton needs to show he can groom this young roster.

                      Extended/Renewed
                      • Taylor Jenkins, Grizzlies – Ownership was happy with how Jenkins has been growing the young roster and re-signed him for 2 more years as his contact was set to expire.

                      New Coaches
                      • Michael Stauffer, Pacers – The Pacers grabbed the young and talented coach and hope his more wide-open system can help the young and athletic Pacers thrive more than McMillan’s grit and grind system.
                      • Jacob Underwood, Spurs – It’s not easy replacing a legend, but that’s what Underwood is going to attempt. He’s highly regarded as an offensive mind and hopes to make the Spurs relevant and exciting again.
                      • Nate McMillan, Timberwolves – The Timberwolves decided to avoid a fresh face and grabbed McMillan off the scrap heap to help turn Minnesota around.

                      Player Retirements
The NBA won’t be quite the same without Jamal Crawford’s heat checks, Pau Gasol’s intelligence, Kyle Korver’s pinpoint accuracy from deep, Udonis Haslem in a Miami uniform, or Zach Randolph’s antics.

                        2020 NBA Owners Meeting

The NBA owners met recently to discuss rule changes for the upcoming season. Some crazy ideas were brought to a vote and shut down (like abolishing the trade deadline or sudden death OT), while other ideas were interesting but not deemed worthwhile to change (like 13 all-stars or trading of 1st rounders in consecutive years). The league has 9 years left on its TV deal but will be experiencing new CBA negotiations over the next year as that is set to expire.

The 2nd most interesting topic to come up at the meetings was the idea of a single-elimination tournament that determines which team gets the #1 pick. This would dissuade tanking and provide more entertainment for fans and money for the league. However, this needed 23 votes to pass and only received 13. We’ll see if this continues to be brought up in future seasons.

                        Expansion, re-branding, and relocation
The most interesting topic was that of league expansion, team re-branding, and team relocation. None of the discussions seemed imminent (at least 3-5 years out), but several cities and teams seemed to have possible franchise changes. It also seems like there is a strong sentiment to cap the league at 32 teams and not go beyond that, just to ensure quality is not diluted and scheduling is easier.

                        • Seattle – This team was back in the news with Kevin Garnett’s recent statement about bringing the Sonics back. There are no plans yet, but a lot of the discussions pointed toward a team moving to the Pacific Northwest, not an expansion. Rumors flew around Minnesota, Sacramento, LA Clippers, Charlotte, and even Oklahoma City being the franchise to move back.
                        • Montreal – With the love of basketball in Canada and the NBA’s desire to add some international flavor, Quebec represented a plausible and low-risk expansion market for the NBA.
                        • Vancouver – If Seattle came back, it would bring a lot of energy to PNW fans if Vancouver was able to join as well, creating a natural rivalry that we’ve see thrive in soccer, as the Portland-Seattle-Vancouver fans have created the “Cascadia Cup” to celebrate the rivalry between those teams.
                        • Pittsburgh – The city has all of the other major sports and could easily support a basketball team and would have great natural rivals in Cleveland and Philadelphia.
                        • Cincinnati – Cincy has a rich basketball history at the professional and amateur level and the city would be excited to add a professional team back in.
                        • Las Vegas – With 2 professional teams and NBA summer league, they are a great candidate for another team and the NBA needs more franchises in the Western US.
                        • LA Clippers – This team already exists, but it hasn’t been embraced by the city. It seems that Ballmer is all-in on staying in LA, but maybe rebranding the Clippers would be a great way to generate more excitement from fans in the city and could be timed with a move to a new arena.
                        • Hawai’i – This may seem crazy: could Honolulu support a team? Would teams be willing to travel that far? It turns out that if you throw enough money the NBA’s way, they might be willing to. Rumor has it that an unnamed Filipino businessman thought that Hawai’i is his basketball-crazy country’s best chance at regularly consuming high-level basketball. Not only is he willing to throw loads of cash at the league but would also be negotiating TV deals in SE Asia and working out travel packages that get fans from around Oceania and the West Coast to an NBA game.
                        • Kansas City/St. Louis – Missouri has no basketball teams and while there haven’t been any open discussions here, both markets are reasonable possibilities for an NBA team.

*note: only 2 user-edited teams are allowed before the save goes online, so I can’t add the awesome Montreal Dragons AND Vancouver Lumberjacks AND Hawaii Hona AND Seattle SuperSonics teams/jerseys. I can add teams if they use the pre-canned uniforms, which is OK for some cities and not so great for others. So whatever happens, I only get 2 custom teams. I need to ensure I get bang for my buck.

                          NBA Mock Draft

We’re getting ready for the NBA combine, so let’s look at the projected first round from Draft Express.

It’s no surprise that Ernesto Parkinson is going #1 to the Bulls, and the only question here is around what the Bulls will do with Zach Lavine, who hasn’t shown an ability to play well with other wing scorers. Maybe Lavine is finally ready to start winning, or maybe the Bulls will move on from him.

A bigger surprise is the Kings taking Jarek Kickert over Juan King, as Kickert would play in a similar place on the floor as Marvin Bagley.

It’s viewed as a 4 player draft and the Hawks, Wolves, and Suns fall just outside of that. It’s hard to know what will happen after the 1st 4 picks for anyone, but we could see moves being made if teams fall in love with any of the international prospects like Yunlong Chan, Christophe Perben, or Ulf Enqvist.

The most intriguing prospect is probably the hyper-motivated, high-motor, under-sized PF from UNC Greensboro: Dana Bright. If everything aligned well, he could be Charles Barkley or Draymond Green. If it all goes South, he’s Robert Traylor. Right now he’s slated to go 12th to the Thunder, which seems like a bargain, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see a team trade up to acquire him on draft day.

The Inside Scoop – Pre-draft edition

Context: TheDominator273 put together an awesome spreadsheet to add random events to your MyLeague. I’ve used this to generate some events that will take place over the next NBA season. I have generated the following events and will be revealing them via this “Inside Scoop” post over the course of the season.
                            3 combine events
                            1 draft event
                            3 free agency events
                            2 summer league events
                            3 preseason events
                            2 pre-trade deadline events
                            2 post-trade deadline events
                            ------

Coming out of the NBA combine, there were a few discoveries that agents have been trying to keep quiet, though some teams have seen fit to share the information as they believe it can help them land the player they want in this draft.

                            Shaddean Christopher Can’t Shoot
Christopher is an athletic power forward from Fordham who finishes well at the rim, but has some defensive deficiencies. Draft Express ranks him as the 4th best prospect in the draft, but that may change after a miserable shooting display during the combine. He was not regarded as a sharpshooter before, but those in attendance described his mid-range and 3-point display as “quite disappointing” and “it’s like all the noise coming from his camp about working on his shot were lies.”

Zachary Hunt Needs a Knee Scope
If Hunt is going to succeed in the NBA, it’s going to be because the 6’5” SG from Colorado can shoot well. To shoot well, you need your knees to work. Hunt worked hard at the combine, but it was clear something was off, and news came out later: Hunt needed a small surgery to get some scar tissue cleaned up in his knee. He’ll be ready by the time the season starts, but we’ll see how this impacts his draft stock.

Rudy Givens May Not Get Drafted
UAB’s 23 year-old Rudy Givens helped his team overperform this season, but may not even get a chance in the NBA. Currently on the bubble of being a 2nd round draft pick, the shoot-first point guard tore his MCL during combine workouts and needed to have surgery to repair his knee.

                              2020 NBA Draft Lottery Preview

Ernesto Parkinson is the prize of this class, though there are 2-4 other players that teams are excited about, and the Chicago Bulls have the inside track to landing the shooter from Kansas. The rest of the top 3 are also made up of what seem like perpetually cursed franchises with the Knicks and Kings.

Picks five through eight are intriguing as they are held by teams that talent and aspirations to build something big on that talent: Atlanta, Minnesota, Phoenix, and Golden State. Will any of these teams get lucky and vault into the top three? Will they stay put and get a player that can help them take the next step, or perhaps trade out for some more win now?

Here are the current lottery odds:

                                2020 NBA Draft Lottery Results

Things went pretty much “by the book” from the 14th pick until pick #6…where Sacramento fell to. They were one of the three teams with top odds for the 1st pick, and fell several spots. Another bad break for a franchise that has a history of them.

That was followed by another shocker: the Chicago Bulls fell to pick 5 and are officially out of the Ernesto Parkinson sweepstakes. This was a huge kick in the pants for a franchise that was looking to capitalize on their league-worst record and turn it into something positive. There were rumors they had planned to take one of the top 2-3 players, then trade back into the top 10 by dealing Zach Lavine. Their front office will need to re-think things now.

The Hawks got the 4th pick, the Knicks grabbed the 3rd, and the Nets and Pistons found themselves overjoyed to be picking in the top 2.

Minnesota has to be deeply disappointed as Brooklyn retained the top pick due to protections (and now Minnesota gets the Nets’ 2021 pick, which is not going to be nearly as good with Durant returning). For Brooklyn’s part, they can grab a young guard to pair with KD and Kyrie, or even shop the pick or Kyrie to see what kind of team they can build around Durant.
