2020 March Madness: Round of 64 Update
Upset Watch
- #15 Hartford 74 - #2 Indiana 72 – In a huge upset, the Hawks came from behind by scoring 40 points in the second half. This was a huge victory for the school of less than 5,000 students from West Hartford. Their 1-4 combined for 55 points to lead the way. 1st round prospect Darrall Gosley played well (23 points, 9 rebounds, 3 steals) but got no help from his teammates.
- #11 UAB 70 - #6 Ball State 56 – Led by first-round hopeful Rudy Givens and his 21 points, the Blazers locked down Ball State. Possible lottery pick Ervin Zamore played poorly for UAB, shooting 2-9.
- #11 Washington 68 - #6 LSU 64 – Despite strong play from LSU’s starting 5, Washington slowed them down in the 2nd half to come from behind and make it to round 2 to face off against Georgetown.
- #10 Gonzaga 86 - #7 Davidson 71 – Junior PF Winston Works scored 21 points to help lead Gonzaga to a victory over fellow mid-major darlings Davidson.
Key Performances
- Freshman center Stewart Mobley led the way for UCLA with 23 points (on 9-20 shooting) and 9 rebounds as UCLA beat Baylor.
- His team lost in an 8v9 matchup, but Seth Blankson shot 10-12 and scored 28 points off of the bench for Western Michigan.

- Xavier’s Donnie Conroy led the Muskateers to victory over Arkansas with 26 points and 13 rebounds.
- Will Frandsen scored 16 points in his final collegiate game for Robert Morris as the Colonials lost by just 6 points, 97-91 to UConn.
- Stanford destroyed Winthrop 91-48, and PF Shannon Gerlach was a big reason for that, scoring early and often to end up with 25 points (including 10-10 from the line).
- SF Gordon Cousinard had 21 and 15 for Syracuse in their victory over New Mexico.
- Willie Shelton (28 points), Herb Dowling (29 points), and Jarek Kickert (27 points) helped North Carolina to score an astounding 121 points in their win over Campbell.
NIT Update
- Dinko saw his alma mater Duquesne lose in round 1 to UCSB, 71-68.
- Virginia and Robby Laudato squeaked by Arkansas-Pine Bluff 68-55.
- It may only be the NIT, but this is Dana Bright’s chance to shine and the Senior PF put up 36 points and 15 rebounds as UNC Greensboro trounced Utah State 90-69.
- Northern Arizona lost to Dan Vignale (24 points, 0 assists) and Florida State.
- Sacred Heart beat Akron 86-82 behind Barney Leadbetter’s 27 points.
- In a matchup full of talent, Mississippi State PG Trevor Merchant (26 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists, 5 steals) managed to outduel Colorado’s Zachary Hunt (22 points, 7 rebounds) and Lou Cesar (14 points, 8 assists) in a 73-72 overtime victory.

2020 March Madness: Round of 32 Update
Upset Watch
- #9 Villanova 74 - #1 Oregon 64 – Cedrick Crawford and Kim Werner shot 5-21 as the Ducks fell to the scrappy Wildcats. Many fans felt vindicated by this game, as the decision to put Oregon #1 was widely criticized.
- #11 UAB 82 - #3 Marquette 71 – Marquette was unable to slow down the well-rounded attack of the Blazers, even though Rudy Givens and Ervin Zamore only combined for 20 points, the rest of the team filled the gap to beat the highly regarded Golden Eagles.
- #7 Providence 78 - #2 Washington State 59 – The Pac 10 may have gotten 8 teams into the tourney, but only 1 (Stanford) is left. LaForest Mance shot 1-10 while Providence had 4 players in double digits and got a 15 and 15 double-double from SF Cameron Soroye.
- #6 Butler 72 - #3 Arizona 67 – Arizona is super talented, but their youth (4 underclassman starters) caught up with them as the Bulldogs started 3 seniors who led them to victory.
- #5 Tennessee 75 - #4 Pittsburgh 61 – This game is only very loosely an upset, especially given Tennessee’s talent, but it gives at least 1 more game to the talent backcourt duo of Pettyjohn and Kowalczuk.
Key Performances
- The junior wing combo of Herb Drabyn and Floyd Paschel controlled the game and led Memphis to an easy victory by combining for 45 points.
- Vytas Kowalczuk went 0-7 from three, but still managed 23 points (and shot 50% overall) in the Tennessee victory over Pitt.
- Juan King didn’t get much help, but dropped another 25 and 10 to lead Georgetown to a victory over Washington.
- J Lamkin scored 21 points for Kentucky as they move to the sweet 16.
- Clemson is set up to match up against Duke once again (3rd time this season, Duke has won both) after beating Syracuse thanks to Fred Stallworth’s 25 points, 14 rebounds, and 4 assists.
- Duke dominated Gonzaga, 91-68, thanks to 45 bench points.
- Louisville barely snuck by Dayton, 74-73. Kalu Kowalczuk scored 28 points in 37 minutes in a loss for the fliers.

Re: The Bulgarian Brothers – A College Hoops 2K8 & NBA 2K20 Dynasty
Thanks! Frankly, if I don't do it, I feel less connected to the dynasty. Typing it up helps me feel connected to the players and my fictional world, so I am invested in these players and programs when they go pro, change coaches, etc. It helps me speak from a place of "knowing" instead of just listing facts.
And half the reason I do this is so I can go back and re-read someday, and I know this is the kind of thing I'd want to have tracked. Maybe one of these guys makes the NBA Hall of Fame someday and I can go back and see that he flamed out in round 1 of the tourney? The Bulgarian Brothers - a story of two brothers (Oggy and Dinko) as they coach in the NCAA and the NBA.

A part of that was bad seeding, and the other part is CHoops craziness...which was more realistic to this time period of college basketball? The Bulgarian Brothers - a story of two brothers (Oggy and Dinko) as they coach in the NCAA and the NBA.

Re: The Bulgarian Brothers – A College Hoops 2K8 & NBA 2K20 Dynasty
Hmm, tough to pick a winner here. I was hoping UAB would put a stop to Kansas ... I'm going to go for Providence. Let's seem them take out some blue bloods in the Tarheels.Comment

Around the NBA: March Update
- The Bulls are bad, and now they are worse. Wendell Carter Jr. is out 2 months with a torn MCL.
- The Lakers are on fire (winning 6 straight to end February), but they’ve lost Kyle Kuzma until the beginning of April due to a broken hand.
- Courtesy of a 2-11 month, the Phoenix Suns are way out of the playoff picture. Despite being as high as 4th near the midpoint of the season, the team has fallen apart and is 32-42.
- Joel Embiid won the East’s player of the month in March, his second time this season. The 76ers are 9-1 in their last 10 and in 2nd place in the East. He went over 30 points four times, and had at least 16 rebounds 9 times this month.
- Steph Curry won the West’s player of the month, though it wasn’t due to his team’s performance as the Warriors are 11 games below .500 and well out of the playoff picture. The 32 year old future Hall-of-Famer is 2nd in the league with 32.4 points per game, and also adding 6 rebounds and 7 assists while shooting 46% from deep.
- Rui Hachimura won the East’s rookie of the month award for the second time this season (the first was in December). He’s been one of the few bright spots for the Wizards, averaging 14 points and 5 rebounds per game.
- Ja Morant also won the West’s rookie of the month award for the second time. He and fellow rookie Brandon Clarke have the Grizzlies just two games back in the playoff race. Highlights this month include a career high 49 points against Portland and 36 points just 4 days later at San Antonio.
- Jimmy Butler missed most of March with an injury and Blake Griffin did not help the Heat as they went 3-11 in the month.
Projected playoff picture
6 teams in the East and 3 teams in the West have clinched spots, and if the playoffs started today we would see the following matchups:
#1 Milwaukee (53-22) vs #8 Indiana (33-41)
#2 Philadelphia (50-25) vs #7 Miami (34-41)
#3 Boston (48-27) vs #6 Orlando (44-31)
#4 Toronto (47-27) vs #5 Cleveland (46-29)
#1 Los Angeles Clippers (53-22) vs #8 Utah (39-37)
#2 Los Angeles Lakers (52-22) vs #7 Minnesota Timberwolves (39-36)
#3 Dallas (52-24) vs #6 Houston (40-34)
#4 Denver (43-32) vs #5 Portland (41-35)
