      2021 NBA All-Star Weekend – All-Star Game

James Harden had 35 points and Giannis added 20 points and 15 rebounds as Team Giannis easily handled team Steph, taking a 24 point lead into the 4th quarter.

February 28, 2021 St. Francis at Robert Morris [NEC]

It has been a relatively good year for Kostadin in his 2nd season as head coach at St. Francis. The Red Flash have won 4 of their last 5, are 16-13 overall and 10-7 in the conference, good enough for 3rd place. With luck and a tiebreaker, they may even finish 2nd in the NEC and help their tourney seeding.

Today, St. Francis heads to Pittsburgh to face off against Robert Morris. Even though the last meeting between these two teams was a dominant 89-58 win for the Red Flash, revenge was still on their mind after the gut-wrenching buzzer-beater loss in last year’s tournament. Even though this was Oggy’s alma mater, Dinko didn’t feel any compassion for them, he also wanted to destroy them and head into the conference tournament with maximum confidence.

The Robert Morris Colonials are 13-16 overall and 10-7 in the conference, meaning that if they won tonight they could jump in front of St. Francis in the tournament. They are led by PG Tommy Zwikker and SG Adam Norman, but are not the same team they were last year, and advanced stats rate them with a F in defensive efficiency

After a hot start for the Red Flash at the Sewall Center, Robert Morris went on a 10-2 run to take a 16-15 lead. The game was back and forth after that and went into halftime with St. Francis ahead 34-32. Robert Morris was shooting well (59%) but had tons of turnovers, keeping the Red Flash in the game. Dinko was not thrilled with the first half, but counted himself lucky to have Casey Tyler and Muhamed Payne leading his team. He reminded the team of their last blowout victory and how they were the better team. If they can better contest shots and get contributions from others, they’ll pull away in the 2nd half.

And that’s exactly what happened. Via some better defense and big plays from backup SG Jairus Cooley, the Red Flash built up a lead 55-48. It stayed relatively close for a bit after that, but as the game neared its end, the lead built to 13, and then finished at 22 as the Colonials fell apart. Another dominant scoreline for the Red Flash, 83-61.

Mo Payne had a great game, showing that the Junior is the season’s surprise MVP. His 26 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 assists stuffed the stat sheet, and half of those rebounds were on the offensive end.

        Around the NBA
        • The Phoenix Suns are 0-2 since the All-Star break and quickly falling out of the playoff picture. Monty Willams should be very concerned for his job.
        • The Warriors have had a great February. They are 8-2 in their last 10, have re-signed Steph Curry for 3 more years, and have climbed up to 6th in the west and are just a game back from 4th.
        • Oklahoma City is well set up for this year’s draft. With their pick and the Heat’s pick, they currently are on track for the 2nd and 7th picks.
        • Your February Players of the Month are Giannis Antetokounmpo and LeBron James.
        • Atlanta C Juan King and Dana Bright have won Rookie of the Month. This is Bright’s 3rd monthly award as the young OKC PF has fast-tracked his Draymond Green impression.

February 28, 2021 Northern Colorado vs Idaho State

The Northern Colorado Bears find themselves in the cellar of the Big Sky Conference. They’ve lost 6 straight games and have no chance of making the conference tourney, as only the top 6 teams in the conference make it. It’s been a miserable few weeks for Oggy, who just hopes that his team can play with pride and give a good final memory for Zygis Martinez and Randy Alvarez.

Oggy was hoping to get a chance to jump to a bigger school after this season, but a last-place finish combined with last season’s recruiting mishap is not a good look. Perhaps he needs to temper his expectations, but he’s never been good at reigning in his ambition. He’s always looking for the next great opportunity. That makes him different from Kostadin, who is happy to stay where he is and make the most of the situation. Sometimes he’s envious of his brother, but he knows he could never settle like that.

Speaking of Kostadin, Oggy saw that the Red Flash destroyed his alma mater, which left him with mixed emotions. He’s always happy for his brother, but wish it didn’t come at the expense of the Colonials.

Turning to the Idaho State Bengals, the Bears really just needed to worry about Wil Darag and shut him down. If UNC can keep him in check, Oggy felt good about the Bears’ chances tonight.

The game started out poorly with his team unable to make any shots. Halfway through the first half, the Bears only had 10 points and Alexander Dizdarevic was completely dominating the offensive boards. At halftime the 19-9 rebounding advantage for the Bengals provided them with a 37-25 lead. Wil Darag had almost zero impact on the game, but it didn’t matter. It seems Oggy’s focus on him (which served the team well last game) was misplaced here.

The Bears managed to crack into a single digit deficit once, but never really got close and lost the game 72-60.

Jonathen Lindsay led the way for the Bengals with 21 points. He controlled the game from the PG position, knowing exactly when to drive, when to shoot, and when to dish. He was complemented by Aleksandar Dizdarevic’s 18 points and 6 rebounds.

Top NBA Draft Prospects – 2021 NBA Draft

As we’ve passed the NBA All-Star break and trade deadline, some teams are clearly out of the playoff picture and are looking to the future. There’s still time left in the season, but we are starting to get an idea of who the likely lottery picks are and the top players at each position.

Right now, there’s a clear #1 pick in Jerry Sparks, followed by 3-7 solid players (depending on which scout you speak with). We have several teams in reach of the #1 pick and salivating at the thought of adding Jerry Sparks. Here are the top 5 lottery odds right now:
            1. Chicago Bulls
            2. Oklahoma City Thunder (via Miami)
            3. Portland Trail Blazers
            4. Charlotte Hornets
            5. New York Knicks

Things may change as we get to March and beyond, but here are the top 5 prospects at each position as it stands today.

The Inside Scoop – March 2020

The Inside Scoop is based on TheDominator273's

Andre Drummond adapts to the modern game
Realizing that he will have limited time in this league if he doesn’t start to adapt to the modern game, Andre Drummond has reportedly been spending hours watching film of great distributors. From Steve Nash and Magic Johnson to Larry Bird and Nikola Jokic, Drummond spent time studying how they set up teammates. He supplemented this with hours of work in the gym on pass placement and his ball skills. With Cleveland surrounding him with young talent, we’ll see if this can help them succeed in the future.

P.J. Washington out for 6 months after hip surgery
Washington had a nagging hip pain that had been slowly getting worse all season. After seeing a specialist it was determined he needed surgery on his left hip and wouldn’t be able to competitively play basketball for 6 months. He’s out for the season but should be back next year. It’s frustrating for the young big man, but not overly impactful for the moribund Hornets.

2020-2021 Regular Season Recap and Tourney Preview

The 2020-21 regular season has wrapped up for the NEC and Big Sky conferences, and their post-season tournaments are about to begin. While the big conference still have another week of the regular season left, this is a chance for the small schools to be in the spotlight and get some airtime on ESPN or maybe even broadcast TV on a Saturday morning.

The preview and pre-conference play recaps can be read if desired, but the two brothers had very different fortunes this year.

                Big Sky
It was a very disappointing year for Oggy. He knew it would be an uphill battle, but the way the Bears finished the season left a sour taste in his mouth and he was very frustrated to be watching the conference tournament from home. However, it was a very tightly contested conference this year, and the tournament will likely be a good one. Idaho State finished the season on top, but was just barely ahead of 5 other teams, who just barely made the tournament over teams 7 and 8. Idaho State greatly outperformed their pre-season projection, as they were slated to finish 7th.

                Northeast Conference
Wagner and Central Connecticut had great seasons, outperforming expectations, while Fairleigh Dickinson and Robert Morris were both relatively disappointing given their talent and experience. Dinko should be thrilled with the 3rd place finish and winning record both inside and outside of the conference.

In the conference tournament, we see a repeat of the budding rivalry between St. Francis and Robert Morris. In the first round of last year’s tournament, we saw RMU shock St. Francis on a last second basket. That loss will be remembered by all of the Red Flash players, who hope to add a 3rd blowout over the Colonials this season. Fairleigh Dickinson is a formidable 5 seed, and the top half of the bracket could be a place to look for surprises.

                Conference Statistic Leaders
As the regular season has wrapped up, let’s take a look at who is leading the way in the NEC and Big Sky conferences from a statistical point of view.

Kostadin has reason to be very proud of this season. With an extremely efficient defense and great team play, he’s managed to lead the conference in point differential and assists. In the Big Sky, Northern Arizona was statistically the best team, even though they finished second.

                St. Francis (PA) (13.7)
                Northern Arizona (15.5)

With the Portland State stars having graduated, Leon McDaniel led the conference and Sacramento State in scoring. Eastern Washington boasted the Big Sky’s best swiper and swatter, though they couldn’t turn that into a good record. Melvin Augustine had plenty of chances to rack up rebounds playing for a terrible St. Francis of New York team.

                    Power Conference Updates

As we head into the last week of play and have conference tournaments kicking off, let’s take a look at where the major conferences stand and who is likely to make it into the NCAA tournament.

                    Conference Standings
ACC: #4 North Carolina (20-7) has a 1.5 game lead over unranked Miami (16-10). They are followed by #18 Duke (19-9), #23 Clemson (21-7), and #24 Boston College (19-10).

Big East: #1 UConn (25-3) is in control of the conference, but there are a lot of good teams, as #6 Villanova (24-5), #9 Louisville (22-7) and #8 Providence (23-7) are all in a close fight for second with 12 conference wins apiece.

Big 10: In the Big 10, the highest ranked team (#3 Michigan State (24-5)) finds themselves 2 games out of first place, trailing both #12 Indiana (25-5) and #20 Wisconsin (23-6) who are in a tie for first place.

Big 12: Despite all their talent, both Kansas (16-12) and Kansas State (13-15) are struggling and the Big 12 only has 2 ranked teams: #5 Texas (24-5) is atop the conference, followed by #17 Baylor (22-6).

Pac 10: The Pac 10 is tightly contested. #14 Washington (20-6) has one more conference win than #13 UCLA (21-7), #19 Arizona (20-8), and #10 USC (22-8).

SEC: #7 Tennessee (23-4) and #11 Florida (22-5) are in a battle for first, with Arkansas (21-9) just a game behind them.

                    Top 25
Here’s the top 25 teams the week before the big conference tournaments kick off. Notre Dame, Syracuse, Kentucky, and Stanford have tumbled down the rankings the last month as they are all .500 or worse in their last 10 games. UConn and Memphis have stayed atop the rankings, while Wisconsin is the hottest team in the country and has risen to #20 in the country.

                    Projected Bracket and Bubble Watch
With over a week until selection Sunday, here’s the projected bracket.

Here are the teams on the bubble, with many wondering why middling Georgia Tech and Wake Forest are even being considered, but the advanced metrics point to them as some of the better teams in the country.

March 5, 2021 St. Francis vs Robert Morris [NEC Tournament]

For the second straight year, St. Francis is facing off against Robert Morris in the opening round of the NEC tournament. Last year’s game was a gut-punch last-second loss that left Dinko shocked. The Red Flash have played with anger against Robert Morris this year, beating them by 31 and 22 points and are aiming for more of the same in this game.

With Northern Colorado out of the Big Sky picture, Oggy flew back to Pittsburgh to support his brother. However, he wouldn’t be cheering for his brother this game as Robert Morris is his alma mater. He was torn and couldn’t really cheer against either team. That wasn’t true for his parents or his sister-in-law Stephanie, as they three of them were all decked out in Red Flash gear. Oggy smirked at his parents, Dragomir and Zhivka, as he never could have imagined them becoming the rabid basketball fans they have turned into. He picked up his young niece and talked to her as the Red Flash warmed up for the game.

For his part, Dinko was locked in. It was wonderful having his family here, but that wasn’t on his mind. He wanted to make the NCAA tournament. He had a lot of seniors, and they deserved to taste the tourney. 3 wins was all they needed, and it started with completely locking down the shooting of Robert Morris. If he could keep the backcourt rotation of Adam Norman, Tommy Zwikker, Cyrus Callans, and P.J. Boatner from getting easy shots, he knew that the frontcourt couldn’t score.

It was a very fast-paced start to the game, with the teams scoring on the first 4 possessions of the game. RMU hit a roadbump and stopped scoring, but the Red Flash kept scoring, taking an 11-7 lead and extending it to 16-9. It had been a perfect start. Mo Payne and Casey Tyler had all of their points so far (8 a piece), and they hadn’t missed a single shot as they were 6-6 from the field and 2-2 from the free throw line.

Mohamed Payne finally missed a minute later, but Zygis Keita grabbed the offensive rebound and kicked it out to Tobias Roberson for a corner three. Even with a miss, St. Francis was on fire. Their lead extended to 29-19 before Andrew Toole finally called a timeout to regroup his team.

It worked, and the Colonials took advantage of some lax defensive play and cut the game to 33-30, but a few turnovers and fast break points broke the game open and extended the lead to 40-30 and we went into half with a high-scoring 42-36 affair. The teams were shooting 80 and 72% from the field, which is absurd. Mohamed Payne had 19 points, Casey Tyler had 11.

St. Francis’ offense had been amazing so far, but the defense had been atrocious and Dinko knew his team had to do better. Tommy Zwikker had 13 points on 5-5 shooting for Robert Morris.

Zwikker picked up where he left off in the 2nd half, opening it up with a three pointer, cutting the lead to 42-39. Coach Kostadin immediately made a defensive change, putting Casey Tyler on Zwikker, hoping that his height would cause issues for the shooter.

It made an impact, and the Red Flash got hot and started hitting their threes, extending their lead to 13, then holding on to win 81-69 and advance to the next round of the NEC tournament.

Mo Payne finished with 29 points on 12-14 shooting, Casey Tyler had 23 points, as he, Noah Almond, and Tobias Roberson shot a combined 9-15 from deep. The Red Flash got zero points from their bench. Tommy Zwikker did his best, getting 26 points on 11-14 shooting, but it wasn’t enough.

That's really cool to hear, thanks for letting me know I had so much fun with that Hornets franchise, I wish 2K wouldn't have deleted my saves with their servers.

I'm very excited to see if either brother changes schools this offseason.

March 8, 2021 St. Francis vs Central Connecticut State [NEC Tournament]

The Central Connecticut State Blue Demons were 2nd in the NEC with a 12-6 conference record (18-10 overall). Led by PF Evan Admundson and C Dan Ravello, the Red Flash and Blue Demons split the season series, with each team winning at home courtesy of 2nd half comebacks.

Despite the scoring prowess of Admundson and Ravello, the Blue Demons are severely lacking in the height department, with their tallest starters being 6’6” Felipe Kinloch and Evan Admundson. Getting rebounds and second chances will be key for St. Francis, as Central Connecticut has the 3rd best defense in the conference and excels at getting stops.

With a win in this game, St. Francis will head to the NEC championship game, with a chance to go dancing. After seeing his brother make it to March Madness last year, Kostadin desperately wanted to get that this year, especially for his group of seniors. Tobias, Casey, Noah, and Zygis all deserved that chance. They had played together and served this school for years, and it would be so sweet to get a chance to play a few more games together.

Just like last game, this one tipped off and went right into high quality basketball, with a back and forth game. After a few minutes, St. Francis was up 12-11, but Darren Enzweiler hit back to back threes and the game was all knotted up at 17.

After being down 4, the bench, led by Von Felder, spurred a run to put the red flash up 25-23 with 3 minutes left in the half. It stayed close until the game took an unexpected turn with 45 seconds left in the half. The Red Flash managed a few steals and a 30-foot three pointer from Noah Almond to wrap up the half on an 8-0 run.

In the second half, St. Francis pulled ahead by 13 early, then got overconfident and sloppy, watching that lead dwindle to 5 points at 59-54. A few minutes Coach Dragomirov called a timeout, frustrated by the now 63-59 scoreline. He subbed in Von Felder again, and spurred on by the big man and his impact, the Red Flash went wild. The lead extended to 9 and was part of a 22-8 run to close out the game as Dinko and his team won 85-67 to advance to the conference championship game.

Mohamed Payne had 13 points and 11 rebounds. The team played great all around and Von Felder was huge off the bench, using his size better than starter Zygis Keita.
